listen to that. four cameras show us the swift destruction of part of the old bay bridge. caltrans imemployed the pier just after 7:00 this morning and the blast was so powerful you may have felt it around the city. abc 7 news reporter cornell barnard was there. it took 20,000 pounds of dynamite to make a splash this big on the bay. the charges imploded a pier five stories tall. part of the old bay bridge. this was the view from sky 7 hd at the moment of the blast that lasted only six seconds. caltrans says the detonation created a small earthquake, registering 2.2 on the richter scale. >> from what you saw and heard, did everything go according to

plan? >> yes, it did. >> reporter: bay bridge spokesperson says the implosion, which cost $20 million to pull off, appeared to be successful. before the last, chp halted traffic on the bridge and marine units kept boaters 1500 feet away from the blast site. wildlife monitors made sure no seals or protected birds were in harm's way. >> we had a significant monitoring system in place. that allowed for us to know it was clear to do the implosion. >> reporter: the blast copied this caltrans animation. the top 50 feet imploded. the debris buried at the base of the pier. while an air bubble shield protects nearby fish. >> glad to be part of this historical event. >> reporter: jerry lee got up to watch the blast from treasure island but not everyone was impressed. >> we stayed up all night and we came out and expected a lot more and got a little dud. >> reporter: many were hoping for a vegas-style implosion.

this one probably not the last. one down, 20 more to go. that's how many support piers are still standing on the old span of the bay bridge. caltrans says it is working on a plan to remove them. they say more implosions could be in the future. in oakland, cornell barnard, abc 7 news. in our immediate future, rain. we will talk about it in a second. and while we are talking about heavier rain and flooding, free sandbags can come in handy. abc 7 news was in san francisco today at one of the city's five sandbag distribution spots. residents can pick up as many as ten of these. there will be another on saturday happening next week. . >> pick them up before el nino. >> looks like pre-el nino rain coming in. >> just a little bit. >> pretty heavy downpours overnight. >> it could wake you up overnight. this is from the northwest. colder source. that's going to help many the sierra, nevada and we will be looking at moisture coming in

coast. wind advisory for the coast and warmer days will arrive next week. here's a look at the wind advisory for the coastal areas from 10:00 tomorrow until 10:00 at night with the northwest winds. potential is there for downed trees and power lines. good news is the soil is not so saturated yet but always a good idea to of course clear the drains and the gutters out there, getting prepaired for the heavier rain. overnight lows this is about sunrise. temperatures will be dropping to the 40s. there you can see the line of heavy rain from the east bay to oakland through half moon bay. timing it out for you hour by hour at 2:00, here comes the heavy rain. not yet in to san francisco. that will be about 3:00. then down to the peninsula, south city, san mateo, 4:00 in the morning over to the east bay, on the door of livermore, concord, san jose and finally by 6:00, still pressing to the south and east. by 8:00, it should be over.

the president vows a merciless war on isis. they are claiming responsibility for the attacks. police arrested the family of one of the suicide bombers and made three more arrests in belgium. the fbi is sending a team to paris to help with the investigation. people lit candles to remember the 129 people killed. cal state long beach will hollywood vigil tomorrow afternoon for a 23-year-old who died in the attack in one of the restaurants. she was in paris studying abroad. news of the attack spread on social media. people across the bay area have been anxiously trying to reach their loved ones in paris. the first flight out of paris landed this afternoon. >> chaos on the streets of paris as people tried to make it to safety. >> so many conflicting reports in the early hours that we really huddled inside and waited to find out what was really
