live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. at least 27 people are dead after terrorists attacked a hotel in the african nation of mali. one american is among the victims. two of the gunmen were killed. it's the second attack by islamist extremists in a week targeting french interests. mali is a former french colony. good afternoon and thank you for joining us. >> i'm larry beil, the terrorists stormed the hotel overnight in bamako. started a siege lasted for at least six hours. new word in that some u.s. military personnel were in the hotel. they were able to hide to avoid being captured by the gunmen. abc news reporter megan use with the latest.

>> reporter: the guests ushered to safety at a nearby sports center after a deadly standoff with terrorists. this eyewitness said they were shouting allahu akbar. they were shooting everywhere. the terrorists armed with guns and grenades stormed the hotel at 7:00 this morning. they shot at guards and took 170 people hostage. >> al qaeda affiliated group has claimed responsibility. i'm not in a position to confirm the veracity of that claim. and so i think it's too soon to tell right now. >> reporter: located in mali's capital of bamako, the u.n. hosting a delegation and at least five u.s. department of defense personnel. the state department today had this update. >> about a dozen americans including chief of mission personnel in that dozen were rescued. i have no u.s. injuries or deaths to report at this time. we're working to verify the safety and security of u.s. citizens there in bamako. >> reporter: this incident follows the paris attack, twin suicide bombings in beirut and a

downing of a russian airliner, all happening within a month. mali is no stranger to islamic extremist activity. this is the second attack on a hotel this year. in 2012 france was first to send in troops after islamist fighters linked to al qaeda gained ground. the u.s. embassy is asking any u.s. citizens in that city to stay vigilant of their surroundings. meg began hughes, abc news, washington. it's been one week since the paris terror attacks. today authorities raised the death toll to 130 after a woman who was wounded in the attack died in the hospital. today police released the name of the female suicide bomber who died in wednesday's raid. they previously confirmed she was the cousin of the mastermind of the attacks. this video shows the flames and debris just bursting from the building. you saw it right there, as she detonated her suicide vest. [ gunfire ] >> the fact that isis now has the first woman suicide bomber in europe's history, tells us that isis is willing to break

any norm of war, any threshold of war, in order to kill. >> this comes as the french senate voted to extend the state of emergency for three months. >> a new abc/"the washington post" poll shows americans are now backing a more aggressive policy against isis. 73% support increased u.s. air strikes. and 60% back more ground forces double the level of support from a year ago. >> do stay with abc 7 news for the latest on the paris attacks and to stay on top of breaking news any time download our abc7 news app and enable push notification. a suspicious passenger delayed governor chris christie's flight today from san francisco to boston for nearly six hours. our abc 7 now community took this photo of the republican presidential candidate waiting in the airport's food court. sky 7 hd shows the plane taking off around 2:15. it was supposed to leave at 8:30 this morning. san francisco police say a man onboard took photos of the

flight crew and was asked to delete them. another passenger thought they saw a picture of a phone with wires on the man's screen. so as a precaution all passengers were rescreened and then tested for bomb residue. the man with the phone was cleared and put on a separate flight. the mother of a 16-year-old in critical condition says her son is the victim of bullying. >> he was beaten unconscious and left in the street. abc 7 news reporter allen wan live at the berkeley police department with a story you'll see only on abc 7 news. alan. >> reporter: larry and ama, the boy's mother tells us he's no longer on life support, but he's still in critical condition with two serious skull fractures. this happened on a busy street in broad daylight. the victim knows the young adults who were arrested, but today they're out of jail and no charges have been filed. >> they had to go through and make an incision into his brain. and to monitor the bleeding -- >> reporter: afraid to identify her 16-year-old son after he was

beaten and left lying on ashby avenue while going into convulsions. the atmosphere was already primed with violence. police say there was a fight here at san pablo park shortly before the tension escalated two blocks away at ashby and may believe. robinson says her son was at a friend's house and witnessed the fight. some of the young men there followed him as he walked away. >> he was asked to choose a side to be on. and he was like i'm not choosing a side because i'm not in this. i don't know, you know, what you want me to do. but i'm friends with everybody. >> reporter: robinson says that's when her son was attacked at the corner of ashby and may believe. berkeley police chased and arrested six young men for attempted murder. but after three days and no charges, the four adults ages 18 and 19 were released. police would not discuss what happened with the 15 and 17-year-old because they're minors. your son knows these guy who is beat him up. >> he doesn't remember. >> the difficulty in cases like this is when you have multiple

suspects, you have to say who did what. >> reporter: apparently no one's talking. police say they're still under investigation. robinson says it shouldn't be this hard to get to the bottom of ilt. in berkeley, alan wong, abc 7 news. two walnut creek women in critical condition after being struck by a car this morning. police say the women, both in their 60s, were crossing oak grove drive near walnut avenue around 8:30 a.m. when they were hit. they were in the crosswalk. the driver, a woman in her 20s, is cooperating with police. abc 7 news was at san francisco city hall as mayor ed lee addressed last week's tour bus crash that injured 20 people near union square. as abc 7 news first reported that bus was not registered with the state. mayor lee today demanded changes requiring every tour bus that goes through the city get an inspection. >> i don't care if it's 10% of one company, should be 100%. and we're immediately demanding that as part of our follow-up to this investigation. >> the mayor also said that all

24 vision zero campaign projects have been finished three months ahead of schedule. the projects may changes to san francisco streets with the goal of eliminating all pedestrian and bike fatalities by the year 2024. two men suspected of forcing people from spain to work for almost nothing appeared in court for the first time today. they were charged with three felony counts of human trafficking and one count of wage theft. prosecutors said they and another woman would bring people into jobs at a salon and restaurant they own in saratoga and force them to work against their will. there may be up to 20 victims since 2011. all three suspects had bail set at $900,000. the woman will appear in court monday. we have developing news out of mendecino county. police are searching for a 5-year-old girl named rayna. disappeared from her front yard after 11:00 this morning. wearing a gray and orange sweater and sweat pants. turning now to our weather on this friday.

it is a nice day outside. i mean, this is a live look. it looks pretty clear for the most part. >> absolutely. let's see what's in store for the weekend. spencer christian right here with our accuweather update. >> it's been not only mostly clear but also mild around the bay area as well with temperatures in the upper 70s in some locations inland. live doppler 7 hd, little cloud forming at parts of the coastline. you can see on the visibility map visibility down to three-quarters of a mile at half moon bay where there's obviously fog. around the bay and inland visibility at the normal ten miles because it's mainly clear in those locations. here's a view from mt. tam, looking over the bay see how clear it is. there's that finger fog moving through the golden gate right now. it's currently 55 degrees in san francisco. 63 in oakland and mountain view 68. 70 at san jose, morgan hill 70, 54 at half moon bay. check out this it's foggy at the golden gate bridge. we have current temperature readings of 74. up at santa rosa 70 and napa and novato, 71. give a look at what's coming our

way this weekend and next week in a few minutes. larry and ama. >> spencer, thank you. stanford's president sat down with student protesters who have been blockading his office. >> a group has been urging the university to divest holdings in fossil fuel companies. abc 7 news reporter david louie live. >> reporter: larry and ama, the sit-in is now over. the university warned the students they might be cited today. stanford president as you indicated did sit down with the students briefly. the students say they left rather frustrated yet hopeful after he said he would communicate their views to the university's trustees. it has been five days of camping out and sitting in front of the office of stanford president john hennessy. their demand after three years of negotiations the university needs to divest its holdings in fossil fuel companies. but stanford came up with its own demand, disperburse or face consequences for trespassing.

the 100 or so students decided to wind down their week-long sit-in by making one lap around the main quad as part of a rally where they received word that president hennessy would meet with a contingent of them at mid afternoon. >> we're not necessarily proud of our university. we're not proud of the administrati administration's response, but we're proud of the faculty and alumni that have come out. the 100-plus students who have sat around this building for five days. >> reporter: about 50 students did meet with hennessy. only the stanford daily newspaper was allowed to stay. union members who work as custodians and grounds keepers on campus turned out to show their support. the university's trustees previously dropped its investments in coal companies, but it's been evaluating other fossil fuel companies on a company by company basis, a slow process that made students impatient. 30 students including yari grainy will now head to paris for the climate summit. >> it's really important that we go as scholars and as researchers. and by on looking by asking

questions we can move these conversations forward and hold people accountable to the people that they're representing. >> reporter: at stanford, david louie, abc 7 news. the controversial investor who hiked the cost of drugs for aids patients by more than 40% -- named ceo and chairman of calo bios, several cancer drugs in development but recently announced lay offs of more than half its employees. still ahead at 4:00, a major recall just out from tesla. the problem behind the recall as more than 90,000 cars. and the holiday travel rush has begun. airports busier than ever. so what can you expect this coming week? and new at 4:30, heading for a record. excited fans

los altos, antioch, petaluma and all the bay area, this is abc 7 news. tesla is recalling its entire fleet of model s sedans because of a seat belt issue. tesla wants to check those belts after reports that a front passenger seat belt became unlatched on its own. the company blames it on a manufacturing error and hasn't heard of any other reports. the recall is the company's largest ever involving 90,000 cars worldwide. tesla owners are being asked to visit a tesla service center for inspection. well, you know it's almost thanksgiving when the cars come to san francisco. the 58th annual international auto show kicks off tomorrow in san francisco. it offers local car enthusiasts a first chance to see the new 2016 models from car

manufacturers. speaking of which abc 7 was at the center this morning as some of those cars, trucks and suvs were offloaded. the auto show runs through next sunday and that includes thanksgiving day. >> the holiday travel season off to a flying start at bay area airports. or maybe it's really more off to a waiting start. >> that may be more appropriate. it's projected to be one of the busiest getaway seasons in more than a decade. abc 7 news reporter matt geler has the story. >> reporter: there's so much to be grateful for this time of year. but this morning at maneta san jose airport, one thing stood out. every flight on the board was on time, however the lines were longer. >> to be honest i thought it would not be this crowded. i'm surprised san jose isn't this crowded. >> reporter: tsa predicting to be the busiest travel season in its history and warning people about the long security lines at every airport in the nation. families with small kids know the drill. >> just arrive early to allow time for little people to get everything taken care of ahead of time.

>> reporter: all bay area airports will be more crowded than usual. airlines for america predicts sfo will be the seventh most busy airport in the nation for the next week and a half. it is projected to see 1.47 million passengers from today through the monday after thanksgiving. oakland international airport is projecting a 9% increase compared to last year with 388,000 passengers during the holiday stretch. san jose's expecting a 5% increase from last year at 370,000. just remember even though it's crowded and you're a little grumpy navigating the lines, the goal is to make it to your loved ones. that's true for little tyler heading to colorado. he would also like some snow. who are you visiting? >> our grandma and grand dad. >> reporter: are you excited about spending thanksgiving there? >> yeah. >> reporter: the tsa says the sunday after thanksgiving will be the busiest travel day this holiday season. at the airports across the nation. in san jose, matt keller, abc 7 news. the chp started beefing up its enforcement today ahead of

the thanksgiving holiday. all available officers will be on duty through november 29th for what the chp is calling its maximum enforcement period. last year california saw a 36% increase in deadly accidents over the holiday. well, as you know thanksgiving is still a few days away, but the holiday festivities are already getting underway right now at san francisco's embarcadero center. this is a live picture from our roof cam. here's how the buildings are going to look once the lights are switched on in just a few hours. and for people who spend time downtown this is one of the first signs that the holiday season is here. of course when they put the ice rink in that's another sign. the buildings stay lit through the first of the year. >> all right. well, our spencer christian is back in the bay area this afternoon. spencer, we have missed you. >> thank you. thank you. >> it had to be so much fun. spencer was celebrating the 40 on 40 years of "good morning america," that had to be unbelievable. >> i can't even tell you how exciting it was. i had such a great time. at one point yesterday during the broadcast robyn roberts invited me to do the weather. and i expected to see maps and graphics. so here's that moment.

during the broadcast yesterday was so fast paced we didn't have that kind of time to interact. so wednesday was a lot of fun, but all of it was fun. i guess i should do the weather now. >> maybe. where is it? >> we don't want to hear anymore, where is thewet sner. >> oh, it's over here. here's a look at live doppler 7 hd. we've got mainly clear skies right now. but we have some patches of fog forming near the coastline as you can see on this live view at sfo. there's your fog off in the background there. building at the coast. so the forecast features are these. patches of fog overnight, sunny and mild this weekend. much colder weather is coming in around the middle of next week. we'll see temperatures dropping below freezing in some inland valleys. right now we're looking at this mild pattern and dry pattern continuing through the weekend. it's going to be almost spring like the next couple days, but this cold air mass will drop down from our north early next week. and by wednesday, thursday we'll be looking at the coldest air we've seen so far this season. meanwhile, chances of rain are not looking so great. maybe about a 40% chance next tuesday, but it's looking like generally a dry week next week. we go with our forecast

animation for tonight starting at 11:00, we'll see fog sweeping down along the coastline and developing over the central valley as well. but most locations around the bay and inland willing mostly clear overnight. speaking of overnight low temperatures will be generally in the mid to upper 40s although some spots will be even milder with a low of only 51 at oakland overnight and 54 here in san francisco. tomorrow look for a sunny and mild conditions all across the bay area even at the coast we'll see some high temperatures climbing into the mid to upper 60s right around the bay generally upper 60s to low 70s and inland we'll see highs in the low to mid-70s up to about 75 in santa rosa. 76 at clover dale. here's the accuweather seven-day forecast. notice through the weekend we'll see mid-70s inland up to about 70 around the bay. temperatures drop off a little bit on monday. then we get some extra clouds on tuesday with a slight chance of some light rain. and then we get into wednesday and thursday. and we're going to have some frigid mornings wednesday, thursday and friday. especially thursday and friday with low temperatures dropping below freezing in some of the inland valleys.

live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. here are your headlines at 4:30. a state department official says one american has been killed in the terror attack in mali. gunmen took people hostage at a radisson hotel. about a dozen americans escaped. world news tweeted this here,

u.s. embassy lifts shelter in place warning in mali but urges americans to be vigilant. an affiliate of al qaeda claimed responsibility for the attack. with several recent attacks, airline security is being extra cautious. reporter vick lee tweeted a picture of presidential candidate chris christie at sfo. his flight on united was grounded for hours because of a suspicious passenger. the attack in mali comes one week after the islamic state killed 130 people in paris. france has teamed up with the government in mali to help fight islamic militants. despite the danger, some americans are compelled to help the impoverished nation's most vulnerable people. that includes a bay area doctor. abc 7 news reporter alyssa harington talked to him today. >> reporter: mali has declared a ten-day state of emergency following this deadly attack. meanwhile the rest of the world is being urged to increase efforts in the fight against terrorism. malian security forces escort

frightened guests out of the radisson blu in mali's capital. gunmen stormed the building taking hostages, including several americans. according to the united nations at least 27 people were killed. in that same african city of bamako, san francisco doctor ari johnson runs a nonprofit. he's there now. i spoke with him on the phone. >> we're heartbroken today. >> reporter: johnson says they were told by the u.s. embassy to shelter in place. his entire team is safe. and they're continuing to deliver health care. >> this work is an affirm mags of what the terrorists are appearing to try to destroy. we're standing together across nationalities, across religions, across different backgrounds. >> reporter: extremist violence is not new to africa. nigeria's boko haram militants have been behind many kidnappings and killed more than 6,000 people last year. they've been deemed the world's

deadliest terror group. in june isis claimed responsibility when a gunman attacked vacationers on a tunisian beach. the latest incident in mali follows the deadly attacks in paris, bombings in beirut and the downing of a russian plane. the u.n. has approved action for the world to redouble the fight against islamic terrorists. in san francisco, alyssa harington, abc 7 news. turning now to the attacks on paris. the manhunt is still going on for suspects one week after the deadly terror attacks there. abc news reporter marcy gonzalez is there with the latest developments. >> reporter: candles illuminate the scenes of one of paris' darkest days. one week after the chaos and carnage, a peaceful, somber remembrance of the victims. a reflection tonight too from the deputy who read the -- that took down the attack's so-called mastermind officers raided terror cell's hideout in the

suburb of paris. >> one of them was shooting. and then there's one with something grenades through the windows or the door. >> reporter: one of the suspects detonating a suicide bomb. but the battle in this building on the verge of collapse continues. >> i went downstairs, see pieces of someone. and we knew that they could do it again against us. >> reporter: the officers all survived. and now investigators say three suspects were killed, a man who still hasn't been identified, this woman hasna aitboulahcen and her cousin abdelhamid abaaoud. the accused isis ringleader behind the terror attacks. the raid taking down at least part of a terror cell investigators believe was ready to strike again. and police still looking for at least two other suspects carried out nearly 190 searches overnight and took 17 people into custody. marcy gonzalez, abc news, paris.

of a database saying it came from a reporter. the republican presidential front runner is coming under heavy fire for that suggestion including from his own gop rivals. jeb bush condemned the idea calling it abhorrent. trump kraesz addresses the refugee issue with abc's barbara walters. you can see that interview on abc's "20/20" right here on abc 7. officials in mississippi settled a deadlocked race for the state legislature in an unusual way. they drew straws. democratic incumbent beau eaton finished in a tie. each received exactly 4,589 votes. eaton agreed to abide by the results no matter what. tulla said he'd accept only if he won. well, he lost. now he plans to challenge the result. 24 states that say a tied election can be decided by drawing straws or flipping a coin. >> welcome to democracy in mississippi. president obama is used to taking heat, but when a young student in kuala lumpur talked

about his age, the president called the kid out. >> since yourself is aging to a very senior life -- [ laughter ] >> that's pretty low. all the bay area, this is abc 7 news. a salmonella outbreak that was linked to imported cucumbers that killed four people is still making people sick including here in california. the outbreak was first reported back in september. the centers for disease control says more than 800 cases have been reported from people who ate tainted cucumbers produced in baja, california, as well as mexico. the cucumbers were sold under the fat boy label. is cheaper better when it comes to running shoes? >> and fitness fanatics are not left out of those black friday deals. jane king with the report. >> gnc suspended all sales of -- usp labs for unlawful sale of nutritional supplements. gnc says the move is in the best interest of customers while products are under review. black friday is one week away and biggest retailers are preparing for the needs of

fitness gadget owners. while you would normally have to pay $99 for a fitbit flex, walmart is offering the device for $59 as well as a fitbit charge for $119 down from $149. target is offering the same deals. and expensive running shoes are no better and often worse than cheaper ones. a danish website called run repeat has crunched numbers from nearly 135,000 consumers gathered from a year along with the suggested retail price along with the most popular brands. the biggest surprise, the higher the price, the lower the rating in many cases. from the nasdaq, i'm jane king. here's to your health. well, it turns out money can buy you happiness. that's according to a new study out of harvard business school. researchers there say it's about the experiences that money can buy, like a dream vacation or a dinner date that can bring that happiness. money spent on material goods like a new car or gadgets, that often brings stress and anxiety rather than happiness. i'll risk it.

>> yep. >> i'll take it, yeah, thank you. ask finney, michael finney answering questions via e-mail. i purchased gas for $42 with my visa and then a pending charge of $101 appeared on my account from the same gas station. why? >> that's a really good question. it happens almost every single time you buy gas. most cards do it. here's the deal. they know it's a gas station that you're sliding your card in, and they don't know how big your gas tank is. so they want to make sure they're going to get your money. they want to make sure you're not charging anything else at the same time. most of them put a hold, they don't charge you, but they put a hold for $100, in your case $101, so you fill up gas and say it's $40. they don't release the rest of that money for at least 24 hours. a lot of times way after that. 72 hours. >> really? >> completely legal for them to

do it and it shouldn't be. once they know what you've paid then be done with it. >> release it. >> computers can do that. >> well, david, i e-mailed i bought a new suv and it rides like a truck. i've had it for two days. can i legally return it? >> yeah, you can legally return it, but they don't have to legally take it back. that's the problem. there's one loophole here. if it's a brand new car, you're going to have a tough time. and why? because they can't sell it as new. it's been registered to you so now it has to be sold as a used vehicle. call them quickly. and if it hasn't been registered yet, you might have some kind of leeway there. second thing, if it's a used car they had to offer you the chance, tough buy it, but they have to offer you a chance to return your car within three days. they didn't offer you that then maybe you have a small class action, something like that. >> david i ask via facebook, in san francisco if the red paint on a curb is so faded you cannot see it's a red zone, can you still get a parking ticket? >> you still can. the city's really harsh on this. if there's a little chip of red

nevertheless, this whole thing was unnerving especially now. it was a long six hours today for new jersey governor chris christie seen here waiting for his plane to leave sfo. christie flew to the bay area to attend a fundraiser last night hosted by hp ceo meg whitman. united flight 1108 was supposed to depart at 8:30 this morning, but it was delayed because of a suspicious passenger. >> a male passenger who was taking photographs of the flight attendants triggered a level of discomfort. >> reporter: that passenger reportedly began deleting the images after a flight attendant complained to him. police tell us another passenger then told the cabin crew he thought he saw pictures on the man's smartphone showing wires along with arabic captions. at that point the pilot stopped the flight. the man was taken off while the rest of the passengers were rescreened, tested for bomb
