belgian troops are standing by as they go on their highest terror alert level. >> first terrorists strike africa. >> i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ama daetz. >> at least 27 people are dead in mali including an american mom with family in san francisco. >> a chinese state-owned p company says three senior executives are among those killed. >> and they say a 10-day state of emergency has been declared. >> the attack happened in the capitol. a car with diplomatic tags pulled up to the radisson blue hotel and heavily armed men stormed into the hotel and took hostages. it set up a seven-hour stand off and freed the hostages. tonight an extremist group is claiming responsibility for the attack. >> here is a picture of the american killed in the attack. she is identified as anita detar. the "washington post" says she

leaves behind an elementary school-age edison. >> reggie, the american mom has ties to the bay area. >> she does. from her social media it uh -- appears she spent time here. mali is one of the poorest countries with great need for better health care. that's what she was trying to address. 40-year-old anita was in mali to do good when people bent on hurting the innocent took her life. >> we are devastated by the loss of our wonderful daughter who was doing the work she loves. >> a former peace corp member she was the mother of a young boy and had family in the bay area. they declined to comment tonight. she was working in washington, d.c., the founding board member of a nonprofit whose aim is to help women around the world get health care. she is now among the dozens dead after an attack on the hotel in the capitol city. >> i opened the door a little

citizens are told to take drastic action avoiding concerts and airports. >> the new alert was announced as police continue to search for one of the paris attackers who is now on the run. he was last seen driving toward the belgian border. that explosive blast happened outside paris. it is believed a woman dead nateed a suicide vest in the apartment of the terror attacks suspects. authorities say it was a man who set off the device and they say they found a third body where the raid took place. >> one week after the attacks memorials cover the sidewalks where gunmen opened fire on diners. you can see flowers notes and drawings. >> stay with us for the latest on the paris attacks and you can get breaking news updates by downloading the abc7 news

app and enabling push notifications. >> the big game weekend is here and it comes as campus police and uc berkeley put out a frightening alert about an incident that happened overnight. laura anthony is live at uc berkeley with the story. laura? >> hi, dan. this is the time of year it gets dark early. police say it was just after dusk last night when a student reported she was walking alone on campus not far from here. she was kidnapped and driven off campus and sexually assaulted. >> i do carry pepper spray with me. >> women say they are being extra careful after a report a female student was kidnapped from campus and sexually assaulted. >> she was driven to an unknown location and sexually assaulted. >> police were given few details and no suspect or car description except to say it

was abducted on thursday. the report was made to the uc berkeley police nearly seven hours later at 2:45 on friday morning. >> she says she carries pepper spray and walks alone sometimes, but only in certain areas. >> i stick to mainstream places where i know there will be a lot of traffic in terms of people. >> i call bear walk when i walk alone because i feel unsafe. >> this is the seventh sexual assault this year, up a bit from last year. in berkeley, laura anthony, abc7 news. . >> tonight a man is accused of ripping a boy away from his mother. they say it happened near washington street on tuesday morning. the frantic mother ran after the man and managed to pull her crying son back to safety. investigators say it is rare to see such a bold act. >> mostly it dealt more with family disputes like a

relative or a husband and wife incident, but not a complete stranger who randomly wants to take a 2-year-old child at that age in front of his mother. police arrested him this morning after recognizing his image captured on the bus' video camera. >> new tonight facebook founder and future father mark zuckerburg made an announcement that will affect his personal and professional life. >> he will take two months paternity leave when his daughter is born. >> everything is new. it it is the most important time to influence your child. >> they are waiting to find out how long he can stay home. >> i am hoping i can maximize the most time i can get. >> they have a 2-year-old and max stayed home for the first two months. >> it was great. it was the best choice. those two months are the hardest. there are a lot of really late

200 parts per million can cause disorientation, unconsciousness and death. it takes about three hours to fill an average sized garage with the deadly gas. >> as the garage fills up with carbon monoxide it will eventually make its way into the hallways and through the walls. >> at this public garage in downtown san francisco we are told a parked car is found running at least once a month. he left his running twice. most recently just weeks ago. >> i realized that my lights were on so i went back to find out the engine was still running. >> firefighters in san francisco evacuated this apartment complex two years ago when someone left a car running. he lives above the garage and knows what could have happened if the fire department hadn't come. >> they would probably be dead. >> consumer groups called for an automated shutoff system. in 2011 the national traffic

safety administration proposed an audible warning whenever the driver left the vehicle running. >> since that rule was proposed in 201111 more people have died. >> he represented mary in the case against toyota. the parent company of lexus. the company settled out of court without admitting wrongdoing and they said audio and visual warnings were activated when they exit without shutting off the engine. they think more needs to be done. >> no one else has to suffer this. >> the trade group tells us that auto safety is the top priority. and the current keyless ignition system will toes the recommended practices of the automotive engineers. >> thank you, michael. a football tradition in the bay area was put on hold this year because of the drought. >> abc7 news had the big game

the fog is dense. a quarter mile petaluma. less than a quarter mile in half moon bay. even oakland is reporting fog. when you get going you will encounter poor visibility for the start of the weekend. temperatures are mid40s to the mid50s and even a few upper 50s. as you look at a live picture this says holiday, doesn't it? it is already starting to look like it. the embarcadero shops are all lit up. dense morning fog. a mild afternoon. you kunduz plaw indicate -- you can duplicate this. next week a chance of showers on tuesday. i do want to show you really what's in store in the overnight hours and into tomorrow morning areas of heavy fog and you will have to be careful if your kids have games early in the morning and you are out and about. temperatures low 40s to low 50s. comfortable weather for your saturday. and then for the afternoon you'll notice not much is

changing. the spring-like warmth and you will have plenty of sun to do outdoor activities. big changes in store. we have a cold system that is going to cause the temperatures to really plunge. not only that you will see showers on tuesday. the best chance is on tuesday. can't rule it out as we head into early wednesday. trust me you'll feel it. when you look at the temperature trend from sunday morning in napa and that's this upcoming sunday with the mid40s, notice the numbers going downhill for thanksgiving and for black friday. we are looking at numbers for freezing or below freezing in some cases. perhaps a freeze warning issued for parts of the bay area on thanksgiving morning. snow level in the sierra is dropping down to 2000 feet. if you have travel plans through the mountains expect a couple inches of snow. here in the bay area, a side note, the snow level is
