to arrive; that right? >> that is right. imagine serving thanksgiving to 5,000 people. this is what it looks like. 800 turkeys and hams sit on the table. they have been cooking since the beginning of the month. staff say it is now thawing and volunteers will start trickling in and the biggest undertaking this morning is carving all of the meat on the table. here is a carving station set up. all of the meat, of course, will go with the traditional fixings line the stuffing and mash potatoes and gravy and a salad table is set up. a lost good eats this morning. i am joined here by the holiday coordinator for glide memorial church. usually the homeless folks come in but recently not so much? >> the climate is changing so we seeing a lot more families and working poor in san francisco. we hear about the housing crunch and how the prices for rents are

going up and that is affecting every day people. at the end of the month they cannot make end's meet and they come to glide for a meal. >> you have been doing this for a long time. what is the best part of holding a huge community outpouring of support and having this big holiday meal for everyone who needs it? >> ploy favorite part, it is like family, it is my 1th year to do this, it is the same volunteers that come each year, the clints are the same, the church members come in and we meet together once a area and have a really good time. it is a great feeling. it is good to go home and feel like you did something. >> thank you, jean, so great to see so many community organizations helping the community. glide memorial serves 2,500 meal as day, double the amount, the system largest meal. they will open the doors at 10:00 a.m. and the meals are going on until about 1:00 o'clock people and the mayor will be here later this morning

to help with the carving. kristen? >> preparations are in full swing for the thanksgiving feast at st. anthony's in san francisco. hundreds of volunteers and city officials work to prepare meals for homeless. they had to carve, dice, and cook nearly 4,000 pounds of turkey, 3,000 pies and 1,200 pounds of vegetables. >> if people who are concerned they do not have place to go for thanksgiving, no family to celebrate with, st. anthony's is their family and they are included. >> they have enough food to feed 3,000 people fed. >> also happening today a thanksgiving day run will go on in san francisco despite a big set back. police are still look for the criminals who stole a truck full of supplies and gear for the annual turkey trot which benefits track and field programs at lowell and washington high schools. organizer say the rental truck was parked in san francisco's richmond district and it was stolen yesterday morning. here is what was inside: 2,000

they're cozy and sleeping. don't seem bothered by the cold at all. we were out here earlier this week and one woman told us she got here on monday. as a best buy, they were bragging they were there for nine days. they were worried about the cold and were talking about the different blankets they were going to have to try to get them through this. they appear to be sleeping soundly and we don't see generators or heaters brought in. they were pushing through. gutting it out. they're doing it for some good deals. we took at look at what best buy is offering. the ipad air is going to be $100 off here today. samsung tv will be $799, originally over $1,000. we also found a playstation that will be about $50 off. it will be for about $299. but also saw that amazon is

the glad memorial church. feeding 5,000 people is certainly not easy. check out all this turkey and ham on this table. it's all cooked and now the carving station is set up so this is the biggest undertaking this morning carving all of that juicy meat off the bone to go with all the traditional fixings of stuffing, the mashed potatoes. also a salad bar set up. the volunteers will be helped in a bit. i'm joined by two volunteers who came here from fremont. this is your second time out here. what's it like being part of this big holiday event and volunteering your time? >> it's a great experience to give back to the community. my co-workers started this tradition. the co-worker is no longer with us but my supervisor keeps up the tradition. every year we try to make it to glad memorial to give to the community. >> you brought your 14-year-old daughter with you. how is that? >> it's really fun. any opportunity i get to help

anyone, the volunteers, it's really great. >> i'm sure it's great to see all the people thankful for the food they're getting. >> it's really great. i love seeing the people really happy getting all the food. seeing happy faces. >> thanks, guys, so much for being out here. they are two of the many, many volunteers. i think i heard about 500 volunteers coming through the church today to help with the meals and get all the food ready. the meals start at 10:00 a.m. this morning and will be served until 1:00 p.m. the mayor ed lee will be here as well to help carve all the turkey you saw on the table. glad memorial church has been doing this for several, several years. typically this is double the number of meals that they serve on a typical day. that's about, again, 5,000 meals. a lot of mouths to feed, a lot of homeless people and working class people who come out for a warm meal. i'm reporting live in san francisco, janet oh.
