4:00 pm
good evening again, everyone. for those of you continuing with us with our special one-hour edition of "world news tonight." at this hour, at least 14 dead, 17 injured in southern california. and you are looking live at this hour at the scene unfolding as we're on the air tonight. as we all know, this all began to unfold today around 11:00 a.m. california time. a deadly rampage at a community center. we know that that center often helps those with developmental disabilities in that community. though, we don't know which group had reserved that building, had rented that building, perhaps, for a gathering today. what we do know is that witnesses described a gunman coming into the building, opening fire on a group inside that building, swiftly. authorities saying a short time
4:01 pm
ago that it was clear that these gunmen had some sort of a plan, that they were armed with long guns, they did not specify which type of weapons. many of the witnesses described seeing them dressed in armor, as well. some said they had masks, as they came in, and then left within a matter of minutes, inflicting incredible harm while they were in there, though. 14 killed. and the number of injured increasing as we've been on the air late today. we know they're at area hospitals, being treated. some of threat critically wounded. and the picture of that suv, that really, the entire country is lasered in on tonight, because inside that suv, perhaps, could be one of the suspects they were in pursuit of today. just beyond that vehicle, another suspect, it's believed, dead after an encounter with authorities that had been chasing them. a gun fight ensuing. there is another location, a pickup truck with one person, perhaps a suspect being questioned. let's join a press conference, where we are expecting to learn more about what they have come upon today. we'll listen now.
4:02 pm
as you can hear them, they are preparing reporters at the scene. which they do in cases like these. she's asking if we're ready. >> again, my name is vicki cervantes with the san bernadino police department. as an update, officers that are working this active shooter case were doing followup work when they located what appeared to be the suspect's vehicle. somehow during that contact, shots were exchanged between the suspects and the officers. one officer was injured, however he was transported to a local hospital and it does not appear to be a life threatening injury. i believe he is a san bernadino police officer. additionally, some suspects, or, a suspect has been hit, i believe there is still possibly a suspect outstanding, so, it's still, again, a very active, fluid situation.
4:03 pm
we don't have a lot of answers yet. they're still trying to short through what they've encountered on the other end, at the other scene. chief is going to be coming here at 4:45 with sheriff mcmahon and, again, do a press conference, so that you can speak to him directly and he can update you with any information. >> what about the possibility of a third suspect? >> how many suspects are there? >> what's the suspect count? >> i don't know. i believe that there are two at this time being dealt with. >> and is one on the run? >> if there were originally three suspects, there's still possibly one outstanding, but again, i don't know. >> is the suspect who was hit dead? >> i don't have that information. >> is there a suspect not hit and in custody? >> i don't have that information, either. >> how did they come to following this vehicle? >> i don't know.
4:04 pm
their investigation just took them in that path. >> you have cleared the building entirely at this point in this location or are they still in the process of doing that? >> i don't know. >> did one of the suspects leave the meeting this morning and then return with two others? >> i don't know. that's information i've not been given. >> the scene sergeant over here that is active, can you please go over, once again, who -- how many suspects are in custody and how many -- >> i don't have any of those details. the chief will provide those at 4:45. he's being briefed on that as we speak. we're just speaking here because we committed to talking to you on the hour and i apologize, we don't have all of the information. >> is the building cleared yet? >> i don't know. >> vicki, the officer that was struck, can you tell us what kind of a wound we're talking about? >> i don't have that information, either, i just know it's not life threatening.
4:05 pm
>> suspect is dead? >> i don't know if the suspect has died. we have not been given that. >> how many have been hit? how many suspects have been hit? >> i couldn't tell you that. but if you are back here at 4:45, the chief and sheriff will be here and they will probably have many more answers for you. >> as you can hear, briefing reporters there at the scene at the top of the hour, saying that the chief there will come before the cameras in about 40 minutes or so. obviously here in the east, 7:05, 4: 05 there in the west. authorities again taking questions at about 4:45 their time, but you did hear her say that one officer was injured in pursuit of this suburban or suv, whatever the vehicle might be. that officer, she said, was injured, but the injuries are not believed to be life threatening. it's believed that that officer was with san bernadino force there. she said a suspect has been hit, a possible suspect outstanding, now, that perhaps could be the suspect at the other location being questioned.
4:06 pm
our team and our west coast bureau reporting that in the area shots, you could see police pulling a body out of the vehicle, plus a second body on the street. and if that's true, you have two people at this scene right here, and then the third person being questioned at the other scene, brian, and you mentioned in the last half hour something very significant, for as slowly as this right here unfolds, because they're doing it with great care, not knowing what's inside that truck there, they will know very quickly who they're dealing with. >> reporter: if the fingerprints of either suspect, as you said, two are accounted for, but she went to say, if there are three, then one is outstanding. so, it's not clear exactly if all three, in fact, have been accounted for, but nevertheless, if they have two suspects, they will take the prints and they have a special machine, a very portable machine they have used again and again in cases like this and they send the prints, digitally, to a center in west virginia, the fbi mans it, it's a 24-hour operation and if there
4:07 pm
is a match in the criminal database or for any reason that person had fingerprints taken, they will know within five to ten seconds who that person is. >> the immediate questions, pierre thomas with us, as well, late today, were whether or not the suspects might be isis sympathizers and whether or not we were witnessing, you know, some sort of planned terror here in our country. that, we simply do not know. they haven't touched motive but there were many things that were different about this case, at least, when we began covering it this afternoon. that is how quickly they went in. they got out. there was more than one person, this was not a lone gunman that we were deal with. >> reporter: exactly. two gunmen going in with a mission, with a plan. unlike anything we've seen recently. and law enforcement officials responded in kind and, david, the active shooter scenario has been one that law enforcement has been training for over and over. that's why you saw this overwhelming response and that clearly played a role in perhaps taking these two men at least off the street very quickly. >> and you heard steve gomez say
4:08 pm
before, he's with us at abc news, but a former fbi agent, because this played out so quickly, them finding perhaps the suspects here, they had little time to get away. they were, what, 1.8 miles away from the original scene. morning time, late morning in california this afternoon here in the east, they didn't seem to get very far. >> exactly. one of the reasons why they flood the zone with so many law enforcement, a, is to try to keep additional killing from happening at the prime location, but also, to put pressure on anyone trying to leave the scene. and that may be exactly what we saw take place here today. >> pierre, the fbi saying today, we simply do not know if this is a terrorist incident. a lot of people simply think about the terror inflected on the people inside, at all of these locations when we report on these mass shootings, how do you determine what is terror and what is not and certainly this is, right after the paris attacks, which is why so many people were asking about possible motives. >> reporter: or the riffic. and the country in the last six months have been dealing with a
4:09 pm
spate of active shooter scenarios. tennessee, those people killed in that church. and charleston, south carolina, the military officials killed, as i said, in chattanooga. we had people being shot in a movie theater earlier this year. just last week, at planned parenthood. so, the country is seeing this carnage over and over again. and that's why the motive here will be very important, because law enforcement officials want to sort this out. they are doing study after study to look at what kind of people are engaged in the type of activity, but terror, because of what took place in france, has been in the forefront. that's why they're going to want to know as much as they can about these two men as quickly as possible. >> pierre, stay with us. viewers have likely noticed we are looking at new aerials here, at another scene with activity unfolding. let's listen into our coverage from kabc, our team in the west. >> a lot of people are calling it, a facility that helps developme developmentally disabled people. there was some sort of event taking place in the banquet center, and that is where the
4:10 pm
three armed people, we're told three armed suspects stormed the building, went straight in there, guns firing, witnesses say they thought it sounded like a shooting range, was right there. they just heard one fire after the next fire after the next fire. then, we see a rush of ambulance, we see all law enforcement swarming this area. they find out that there's a black suv or a dark-colored suv possibly with three suspects inside. then, within the last hour, david, about an hour and ten minutes, we have seen a pursuit take place. we have now seen the end of it and we thought we saw the end of it, now we see there is another serious manhunt taking place, about a mile away from the scene where we saw that suv with, riddled with bullets. >> right. we're going to revisit the scene with the suv and try to get to the bottom of what's going on over there, but this is the latest of what's happening right now and that is another manhunt. and, a frightening day in san bernadino. a deadly day with bullets flying
4:11 pm
not only this morning but this afternoon and tragedy, at that. a lot of people will be scarred for what has happened in their neighborhood, in their facility. as we've been pointing out, we don't know the motive. we don't know why gunmen would storm in and start shooting innocent people. we don't know if there's an association with some sort of international terrorism ring or perhaps it's domestic terrorism. perhaps it is just somebody with a vendetta on what was going on. those are questions we really do need to find, with the suspects, if we could find one that's still alive. >> one safety measure taken earlier on, and we are hearing about the school super intendant was notified and that san bernadino unified schools were -- you see them moving in right here. definitely active. a lot of children are still in their schools because they were put on lockdown, so, it's a very tense situation for this entire community about what is taking place. the tragedy and now the intense manhunt going on. >> right. and this could be protocol.
4:12 pm
this could be just going house to house in a neighborhood that's on lockdown and making sure everything is clear and there's nothing that looks suspiciu suspicio suspicious. they have to do this when it comes to manhunts. doesn't necessarily mean they think somebody is inside of this house. if you look at the posturing, i would almost tell you that they probably don't believe somebody might be in here. but you never know. they have a canine with them and they are prepared for anything. and if they clear this house, then they're going to move onto the next house. as bill thomas pointed out, this neighborhood is locked down. nobody's getting in, nobody's getting out. if there's a suspect in this neighborhood, they're going to find him. and we're going to continue to watch this situation, as they make progress from house to house. >> i do know that bill thomas was saying that someone said in the neighborhood, they saw someone, they were running, jumping the fences. he didn't say exactly if they were armed, but if this person is linked to that shooting at irc, there's a very good possibility they have a long gun as opposed to a handgun. and now they are leaving this residence, moving onto the next one, david. and you can see this law
4:13 pm
enforcement official right there with his gun drawn, facing forward, i don't know exactly what's beyond that, they are just going in through each gate. >> they cleared one house. they are moving to the house next door. they are going to clear this house, as well. this is just a random search going on throughout the neighborhood. doesn't necessarily mean they think the suspect is here. there's a line of officers going from one side of the house, the other side of the house. they are looking for anything suspicious. a broken window, an open door, something that would show a suspect on the run and might have left a trail or some evidence of him hiding out. there may be nobody home here. these people might be at work. they may have no idea that law enforcement is even on their property. but these guys are going to look for anything that could point out -- >> you're looking live at the exhaustive effort from authorities in california at this hour, going home to home and when you heard one of the reporters there say that witnesses saw someone jumping a fence, that is always going to be a trigger for something to play out in a neighborhood. going from each home to the next
4:14 pm
after they have cleared the home. you see they have already moved onto the property nearby. we see how carefully they are doing this and it is very similar to the other scene we've been carrying live, involving the truck. i want to bring in matt olsen, who is with us here at abc news, and matt, as you watch this unfold today, you know that this is considerably different from what we've been reporting on, when just within the last week at the plannedpare parenthood, have a lone wolf, someone going in and inflicting harm. this appeared to be several people and we will learn more about that. you heard the authorities say a moment ago, one american migper still be unaccounted for. they had a plan here and the weaponry to get things done. >> i think that's what's really concerning here, that this appears to be very well planned. it appears to be obviously more than one person, not the lone wolf scenario that we've seen in the past. and that's what's going to concern counterterrorism
4:15 pm
officials in particular right now. >> and the precise amount of time or lackthereof that it took them to inflict harm. also, was quite a bit different from what we typically see, unfortunately, when we cover these mass shootings. they stay on the scene, inflicting harm for as long as they can. >> that's right. and the fact that they had a plan to get away is also a significant concern and a significant factor. as you pointed out, we still don't know the motive, but you can rest assured that terrorism officials, analysts are combing over data bases looking for any sign, any indication if a threat was in this area. >> when you look at this, you know a lot of people are asking, simply because of coverage in recent days of the terror attacks that unfolded throughout paris, you know, the fear here on the home front, was that, do we have isis sympathizers who
4:16 pm
might be, you know, watching what unfolded overseas and sympathizing, perhaps, with isis and might be willing to do something here at home. but simply is no evidence that that is the case unfolding today. >> that's right. so, every possible alternative or option has to be on the table from a foreign terrorist organization like isis, to domestic terrorism, anti- government terrorism or simply, for some reason, more than one person who has some kind of vendetta. all of that needs to be on the table and that's what makes this really complicated right now. >> describe what you are looking at right now, we are watching armored vehicles traveling through this neighborhood in san bernadino. this is not far, this is about a mile away from that community center. we do know that the san bernadino county department of public health was renting that space today for a banquet. that's new reporting. it had been unclear who was, in fact, inside that building.
4:17 pm
we did note that center was used to help the disabled in the community. though still unclear who was in there at the time that the shooting broke out, around 11:00 a.m. california time. but as we look at this unfold, describe for us from your vantage point, how this works, why they have to so carefully file through this neighborhood. >> well, you know, they have to be very careful, because these individuals are obviously armed and dangerous. it's a little bit reminiscent of the manhunt for the tsarnaev brothers, following the boston marathon bombing, where there are going to be a number of different leads coming into the local police department. many of them will turn out to be false leads but the police don't know, so, they get a report of someone seen jumping a fence, for example, as we just heard, they need to take every one of those seriously. this is an all-out manhunt with multiple departments and agencies involved. >> matt, stay with us here. i want your reaction, because we heard from the authorities
4:18 pm
today, at minimum, we have a domestic terrorist type situation. help folks understand, when we talk about the terror attacks in paris, horror unfolding here in these mass shootings, why they describe it as domestic terrorism. >> well, i think what they're saying right now, at least, is, you know, obviously domestic in so far is that it occurred inside the united states. what we don't know is if it's a -- if it's connected to a foreign terrorist organization, in which case it would be international terrorism. but i think as we said, everything is on the table right now, and -- >> not ruling anything out. >> be very careful. >> being extraordinary careful. let's go to kabc. >> they are prepared for anything. you just saw a person jump into the back of the bear cat. he had a canine with him and that was a blood hound. so, those, obviously, blood hounds do exactly that. they are expert at finding a person's scent and tracking that person down. as opposed to the other canine
4:19 pm
we saw at the end of the pursuit where they send in that dog to basically aggressively take down the suspect. this dog, in this unit, is a blood hound that is trained to try to track a person's scent. >> and david, we were hearing earlier that there are so many different agencies involved in this investigation. we saw the fbi, they said atf. we know that san bernadino city police department, we know that san bernadino county sheriff's department was also called out moments after the shooting took place. they launched their helicopter and their s.w.a.t. team. this has been a multiagency response from all of the neighboring cities. so, this really, there has been so much police work, good police work happening right now, and, you know, what's taking place right here, where their doors are open on these cars, they are standing behind them for a shield, as well, but again, fanning this neighborhood, coming through every house and you see a dog in front of this house, you know, it's a very
4:20 pm
sen tense situation for the officers trying to find the suspect and deal with the family dog who is trying to protect their property. >> and so many questions as to why this even occurred to begin with and i know terrorism is the first thing that everybody thinks about. we think about what happened in paris three weeks ago and innocent people being shot in the streets of that city, hoping that nothing like that would happen here. not to say that is what happened here. we just don't know. we heard president obama talk earlier, he made a statement, basically, about how these occurrences happen way too often here in the united states. and something needs to be done about the way people are able to buy guns. his comment, obviously, very controversial. he will get some heat from it, but there will be an examination, once this is all said and done, who are the suspects, what are the weapons they used. >> our team at kabc, with live coverage, as this scene continues to unfold and our live coverage right here on abc's "world news tonight" will continue right after this short
4:22 pm
we're back with abc news live coverage of what's been unfolding in southern california, really for several hours now. we want to take you back to live pictures coming in right now from kabc. there are several scenes unfolding in san bernadino, california. that's about 60 miles east of los angeles, but each of these scenes not far from where that shooting rampage unfolded around 11:00 a.m. california time this morning. a tweet just sent out by the san bernadino county sheriff, gun fire exchanged with suspects during followup investigation, one suspect is possibly outstanding. and in capital letters, they are urging everybody there, avoid the area of san bernadino avenue to california street as they inspect the neighborhood. carefully going from home to home as we have been watching here and certainly, carefully approaching that one particular truck where it is believed our
4:23 pm
team and the west coast bureau saying you could see in the area images one person dead, beside the truck and another body, it would appear, to have been pulled out of the truck. we do know at a second location where there was a collision with a pickup truck that one person was being questioned. it is unclear if that person is a suspect. when you hear the county sheriff tweeting there could be one suspect postfully outstaing thad be one suspect outstanding, it explains why they are being so ca careful. you cannot forget there has been extraordinary loss today. we know that 14 people were killed inside that center, that the gunmen moved in very quickly. a matter of minutes, opening fire on a group gathered there. we know that group was the county public health department. we also know that a number of people with disabilities often go to that center, though it is unclear if any of them were inside at the time. the number of injured
4:24 pm
increasing, as we've been on the air tonight. we know of at least 17 people, they've been rushed to area hospitals. we were watching the images come in. there's a nearby golf course where medevac helicopters were literally landing just across the street from that convention center to rush people to the hospital. abc's kayna whitworth is standing by at one of the hospitals tonight, and what can you tell us, kayna? >> reporter: david, so, i'm at loma linda hospital right now. i'm about four miles away from the first shooting scene. now, this is the only level one trauma center in the area and if you look behind me, you can see a heavy police presence. a new ambulance just arriving. we've seen at least three here in the last hour. now, what we know is that here at loma linda, they accepted four patients and were expecting at least three more. we've also seen a helicopter take off from overhead. now, these things, of course, are in flux. they're changing. police are really urging people to use caution when we say these
4:25 pm
numbers because the number of people killed and the number of people wounded could change. now, we do know that ten people are hospitalized at least here and at one other area hospital, and they are listed on critical condition. the total people wounded upped to 17 just about an hour ago. i thought it was so poignant when you said, there is extraordinary loss today, there are people inside this hospital right now, family members, that are hoping that their loved ones make it out alive. >> and certainly family members, kayna, waiting to hear word on loved ones inside that center. 14 people who did not get out of that center today and we saw that father receiving the text message earlier this afternoon, which was really a difficult site to see. reading the text, someone trapped inside the building, hiding, saying, please say a prayer for us. familiar descriptions, all too familiar, of people hiding behind doors, locking themselves
4:26 pm
in rooms. there had been reports that they had closed themselves off until they got the all clear and many were in there for well more than an hour, as this unfolded, even though now we've learned that the gunmen were really in and out in a matter of minutes. you can see a helicopter flying over the scene there. all of this happening not far from where the horror unfolded late this morning there in california. this scene here is a neighborhood where they are going home to home. another scene, that truck where they are carefully moving in, it's believed two bodies at that scene. and, again, just moments ago, the san bernadino sheriff's department sending out a tweet, urging people to stay indoors, that there could possibly be one more person on the run and brian, that explains why tensions are extraordinarily high, even after hours after the initial call came in here. >> reporter: absolutely. they start with a baseline based on witness descriptions, there are three suspects, if that is true, one is outstanding.
4:27 pm
one is unaccounted for. >> we are expecting a news conference in 20 minutes from now, where perhaps we will learn more about these unfolding scenes in san bernadino. a couple of scenes they are flying over at this hour. extraordinary caution that they are taking. there had been reports of a possible pipe bomb recovered at some point in the investigation that followed these shootings today and of course as they moved in on that vehicle involved in that shootout, the windshield riddled with bullet. they certainly want to know if there was anymore weaponry and a bomb perhaps inside that car. we'll come ba with these aerials and new
