pr southern california. this is a live picture where a heavy police presence now spans two cities in southern california tonight exactly 12 hours after a shooting rampage killed more than a dozen people. >> i know one of the big questions that will cold come up repeatedly is is this terrorism? i am not willing to say we know that for sure. >> good evening. i'm dan ashley. >> and i'm ama daetz. here is the latest from southern california. 14 people are confirmed dead tonight. 17 are wounded and two suspects are dead. >> new in the last hour both have been identified. one is 28-year-old sayid-farook and the other is mali. they were a couple. police are still not ruling out the possibility that the shooting may be related to terrorism. >> it all started around 11:00 this morning when the male and female shooters entered the inland reg that will center in -- regional center in san bernadino and opened fire. >> police officers chased down an suv. the chase ended in a crash and a shootout right there.

faruk and -- farook and malik were killed. >> now they #r* looking at a home in the nearby city of redlands. that's where they were said to have gathered before the masacre. >> that's where we continue our news coverage. reggie is live with more information. reggie? >> it is an eerie situation here dan and ama. people aren't exactly sure if they are in the clear yet. they are having some sense of relief because they know from police that the two suspects they are looking for, the two alleged shooters are dead. they are thought sure if this is all over and some are able to go home. it is a block from where i am is the scene where police searched the home of these people gathering at some point. this is what lead to a police chase that would eventually lead to the death of two suspects. people watched tonight and they were militarized police. they were afraid of their own neighborhoods. the apartment police raided

redlands and they are connected tofarook who worked as an environmental specialist. he was attending the event that would later become the scene of a masacre. >> he was at the party. he did leave the party early under some circumstances that was described as angry or something of that nature. that is the information we were following up on when we encountered him back near this residence in redlands that lead to the pursuit and the officer involved shooting and as we confirmed he is one of the deceased. >> family members of the man accused of the shooting say they don't know a motive. >> that's exactly why i'm here. to tell all of you on behalf of my family how sad we are, how sad we are that people lost -- somebody lost husband and wife. probably kid. i don't know. i don't have words to express how sad and how devastated i am. >> that was the brother-in-law

of the man accused of this shooting. that family, they say they don't know a motive either. police aren't releasing a motive tonight either. we talked to a brother and sister who lived across the street from the home that was raided by police tonight. they saw all of the police officers go toward that door with a battering ram. they heard the explosion. tonight they are out of their home, and they don't know the suspects and they don't know why this happened here. all they know is they want to get back home and they want their neighborhood back to where it was 24 hours ago. dan and ama, it may take some time to get there. >> thank you, reggie. >> well, we are hearing from people who survived the shooting inside that busy center. >> abc7 news reporter is in the newsroom with what lead up to the shooting. >> police are not elaborating on why farook got so upset during the holiday party or why they believe he came back with an assault rifle. >> we have at least 20 victims. >> we are on the second floor. >> hundreds of people scrambled in the inland regional center and at the mercy of two shooters.

one believed to be a co-worker. 28-year-old farook. >> and they didn't say a word. it was just gunfire, a pause, more gunfire and silence. >> police say farook was with the san bernadino county department of health for five years. she recounts how she survived the barrage of gunfire in a conference area where the department was holding the party. >> she was trying to shield herself with a chair with the man next to her and then all of a sudden she felt it go this through her back. >> they serve 30,000 people with disabilities and some 550 people work there. >> they are coming here. >> they yelled down the hall and said there's a shooting downstairs, there's a shooting downstairs. >> family anxiously waited outside for people to evacuate. >> shooting at my work, people shot, in the office waiting for cops?

i'm lost. >> some of farook's co-workers say he was quiet, polite and well liked and recently married with a new baby. abc7 news. >> katie, thank you. governor brown canceled the state's christmas tree lighting ceremony set for tonight at the capitol out of respect for those uh teched it by the shooting. they went ahead with the lighting of the tree about half an hour later, but quietly and without fanfare. coming up at 11:14 we will check back in with abc7 news anchor reggie who is live in redlands and the shooting again is sparking a debate on gun control. alan wang will bring you that story at 11:15. >> and our live coverage of the san bernadino shooting continues right now on the abc7 news app. you can enable push alerts to get the latest updates. >> and right now we are on storm watch. rain is on the way to the area as we take a look from the live abc7 roof camera.

>> let's touch base with sandhya patel for the timing of this approaching storm. >> let's show you live doppler 7hd. our radar will be tracking the storm. rightow cloud cover in the bay area. a look at the time line. 5:00 a.m., and a few showers are not out of the question. approaching cloverdale and ukiah. 10:00 a.m., moderate to heavy rain moves into the north bay. by 11:00 a.m. we may even see isolated thunder as the storm system starts to cross the central part of the bay. noontime it is moderate in the east bay and in the south bay and the peninsula and 1:00 p.m. it is shifting southward. scattered showers will continue into the evening commute. here is a look at the 12-hour planner. you will need to make sure your umbrellas are by the door. wet and windy and 1:00 p.m. we are looking at scattered showers. i will let you know about multiple chances of rain in the accu-weather seven-day forecast coming up when i return. >> thank you, sandhya.

>> now the scene in san francisco after police officers shot and killed a man in the bay view district. part of the shooting was captured on cell phone video. abc7 news reporter katie mar swru llo is live at police headquarters. >> ama, the police chief says the man who officers shot and killed was wanted in a stabbing that happened nearby less than an hour before. a witness posted this video on instagram. in it you can see the man walking toward an officer. the police chief said that man had a six to eight-inch knife in his hand. officers fired their weapons killing him. the chief explains what happened leading up to the shooting. >> they deployed the standard beanbag gun several times and striking the suspect. he did not drop the weapon. they called for a higher powered , leslie that will. that was deployed -- less lethal and it knocked the suspect to the ground. he did not drop the knife. he got up again. >> the shooting happened around 4:30. this was the scene from sky 7hd. it was just before 4:00 that

police say a man who had been stabbed in the shoulder walked into the police station. he described his attacker to police and officers tracked down that man. >> he is still armed with what appears to be a kitchen knife that they assumed the knife was used in the stabbing. >> the stabbing victim will survive. one neighbor says it is too soon to take sides. >> hopefully it is justified and more information comes out then that's where i will place it. >> the 14-second video shows one part of the story. police are asking anyone else with video to come forward. in san francisco, abc7 news. >> now abc7 news at 11:00 continues here. we will take you back to redlands where police surrounded a home connected to the suspect. reggie will bring you an update from the scene. >> and another mass shooting brings another call for gun control. >> and a live look outside.

county where we witnessed the deadliest masacre in the u.s. since the sandy hook shootings three years ago. san bernadino county 14 people died as a result of a shooting. police say two people were involved. i will show uh picture of one of the people police say was involved. this was a photo obtained by abc news. 28 years old and american born u.s. citizen who worked for the county. police say he worked for the county department he was attending an event for earlier today in san bernadino where he would then leave according to police and come back and shoot up so many people. the other person involved is a woman named malik. they can't confirm their relationship, but they did say they had a relationship. they are boyfriend-girlfriend or husband and wife. the motive we don't know. we know police served a search warrant about a block away from where i am where people are still not allowed to come

home. they are waiting for the all clear from police. dan and ama? >> thanks, reggie. >> many staff members at the sister facility in the east bay went home early today because they were scared and upset. there are four centers in the bay area including this one in san leandro. the nonprofit contracts with the state to help people with developmental disabilities. >> we are here to help people with the developmental disabilities. we can't imagine why anyone would go after the social service agencies. >> earlier this year the center installed safety glass and some agitated clients, but never anyone with a weapon. >> in the wake of the san bernadino shootings, the gun stores are expecting to see an up tick in gun sales. >> and they are seeing people with -- who want to see a concealed weapon permit. here is alan wang. >> with the growing number of

mass shootings in america they are seeing a rise in the demand for handgun instruction. >> over the last couple months the concealed weapons classes have been picked up and they are half full. they are three quarters to full now. >> and many believe a concealed weapon permit will give them a fighting chance during an active shooter situation. >> but here they say fewer people actually pursue that permit after they realize there are fees, safety courses, a psychological evaluation and in some counties like alameda, you have to have up to a million dollars in personal liability insurance. the east bay congressman spoke to us from washington, d.c. via face time. he says the answer is not more guns. he wants universal background checks and a ban on assault weapons. >> we have had 352 mass shootings in america in 2015 and no one can recall a mass shooting this year where somebody was harmed in the

it goes from category 1 to 5 basically. we want to make sure you are ready. take a look at the chart. each storm that comes through, giving it a thub from one to -- giving it a number one to five. it is not lasting long. a category two and moderate rain. category three we are looking at one to two inches of rain and minor flooding and power outages. category four is a major storm. two to three inches of rain with moderate flooding and mudslides and power outages and as we head toward category five it is a severe storm. three inches of rain with extreme flooding. the roads could be impassable. power outages for several days. tomorrow's storm we are expecting it to be a two, a moderate storm up to one inch of rain with gusts up to 40 miles an hour at the coast. live doppler 7hd we will be tracking the storm and looking at cloud cover. the rain has been up to the north. we've even seen some light sprinkles all the way down toward ukiah and cloverdale.

the rain will start to move down toward the bay area as we head toward the midmorning and early afternoon time period on thursday. right now 40s and 50s, quite comfortable. a live look from the exploratorium camera. looking at the financial district in san francisco. winter storm arrives tomorrow. expect the heavy rains and then a few showers lingering early on friday morning. 5:00 a.m. you get going for the commute. there will not be any rain. it will be breezy, but make sure you have your em brel law and raincoats -- umbrella and raincoats. the winds will increase about 8:00 a.m. by the time you get your kids off to school notice the 30 and 40 mile an hour wind gusts. not just san jose, but .reyes. we are talking 45 mile-an-hour winds. at 11:00 a.m. 48 half moon bay and 55pointreyes. don't be surprised if you see branches off trees coming down. be aware of the fact that the wind will make it difficult driving. hang on to the steering

wheel. the winds will start to taper and dropping off considerably once the system passes through. let's talk about the time line. 7:00 a.m. tomorrow. could see a few sprinkles. that's when the moderate and heavy rain moves in. 11:00 a.m. it is across the central bay. noontime it is shifting to the south bay. by 1:00 p.m. we are looking at the steady rain shifting eastward with scattered showers. 3:00 still scattered showers, but this may be your window to get out and about and run errands. 5:00 for the evening rush. and as we head toward 8:00 p.m. the showers wind down and there is a little more coming for friday morning. rain totals for most of you will be in the quarter to half an inch. but there will be spots up in santa rosa, three quarters of an inch and further north we are looking at an inch of rain and down south, san jose, mountain view, you may say what rain? we are looking at a 10th of an inch. it is going to come in at a
