>> now at 11:00, an east bay teenager killed in a freak accident involving a tree. i'm dan ashley. >> i'm ama daetz. it happened next to children's ferry land in oakland along the shores of lake merritt. >> abc news' alan wang is there to explain what happened. >> this is the long portion of the tree that snapped killing the boy around 6:00 that evening. it appears the tree had been weakened because the top of it either broke off or died some time in the past. it is something an arborist has to determine now that somebody has been killed here. it happened off the trail around lake merritt next to the ferry land sign. a witness says three teens were siting on this long branch when another 16-year-old boy jumped up and grabbed on to the end of it. the witness tells me he gave the boy cpr, but he realized that there is no hope because it looked like the boy's neck

was badly broken. the victim's parents and other adults were there celebrating a birthday. all gathered around and went as the cor neither took the body. >> it was like, wow. i feel bad for the family and during the holidays. my prayers go out to them. >> oakland police say it appears this was all an unfortunate accident as the boy's body was taken away his parents were given a chance to have a moment with their son. they thanked the police and went home in tears. at lake merritt in oakland, alan wang, abc7 news. now to the shooting rampage in southern california. from housewife to killer, tonight we have our first look at the woman who police say pledged allegiance to isis just hours before opening fire during an office holiday party. >> malik pledged the -- pledged it on facebook while carrying out the shooting. >> the shooting rampage is

being investigated as an act of terrorism. the fbi is taking over the investigation from the san bernadino police department. >> new tonight the heightened alert lead to a suspension of all operations at a ups building in san better than earn. someone sent a suspicious package addressed to farook. the facility was evacuated as a precaution, but in the last 20 minutes police reveal that package is safe. >> and now a look at the redlands apartment the couple called home. reggie shows us what was left behind after the fbi wrapped up their investigation. >> she was a college graduate and known as a brilliant student turned wife and mother and accused killer. the disconnect wasn't easier to understand when you stepped inside her house. anyone looking for a reason why the suspected it shooters may have killed didn't get their answer while walking in the redlands home the couple rented since may. >> why did you decide to allow people to go in this morning?

>> i opened it up because i had to -- i needed to take pictures of the damage and stuff for myself, for insurance purposes. >> what the landlord found, signs of a police raid, but otherwise kids' items and evidence of the life of a family looking like it intended to come back. >> it seemed like they were regular human beings, but that's why it is amazing. >> after about an hour of letting anyone come in the front door, they are now telling us to leave. before you leave you can see a table where there is a koran and there are forms and there is a receipt with a home depot with the name of the male shooter in this case. >> of course what we didn't see the massive amounts of ammunition and a dozen bombs. >> making bombs in the backyard particularly. that's crazy. >> they weren't being tracked by the fbi. we now know they met on an on-line dating site. falook brought malik on a spousal visa. so tar no proof anyone was directing them from abroad. what about in the home?

who was calling the shots? >> i don't know the answer whether she influenced him or not. being a husband myself, we are all influenced to an extent, but i don't know the answer. >> many wondered what happened to the six-month-old baby girl left behind by the couple. we are told by a family attorney she is with child protective services and could be turned over to another family member as early as next week. reporting in san bernadino county, abc7 news. >> and farook's sister and brother-in-law tonight are talking about their shock about all of this to abc news. they say farook's young wife never mentioned anything political, and they can't believe she pledged her allegiance to the leader of isis. and they say the couple kept to themselves, but appeared to be happy. >> they kept to themselves a lot. they were a good couple. we thought they went together well. >> they were private. there are a lot of people that are private, so it was none of our business. but they were private and they were together.

outburst -- an angry outburst as they demand answers after the shooting death of a 26-year-old man. the shooting was caught on camera. >> they say it approves the use of force by officers was unjustified. >> cornell bernard was live at police headquarters with the story. cornell, it sounded intense. >> it really was, dan and ama. lots of anger and raw emotion. a community demanding answers about the police shooting of mario woods. >> there were cheers from the crowd when someone demanded the police chief be fired. emotions filled over at this town hall meeting at the bay view district called by the chief after the shooting death of mario woods this week by his officers. the chief tried to explain to the crowd the chain of events leading up to the shooting, but he was vatted -- but he was shouted down.

he said he would go by him and he fired in defense of himself. this is what i have. >> plar yow woods was a suspect in a stabbing on wednesday. officers found him holding a six-inch knife. they told him several times to drop the weapon. nonlethal beanbags were fired. then they fired a barrage of bullets all captured on cell phone video. some called it an execution. >> there is no reason to shoot somebody 16 times when he ain't got nothing but a knife. shoot him in the leg. >> they understand why the community is angry. >> maybe we need other tools in our toolbox. maybe they can be short of deadly force. we need to look at all of it. i don't ever want this to happen again. >> she said her son suffered from mental health issues and was trying to overcome them.

cornell bernard, abc7 news. >> five firefighters and two officers responding to fremont had to be taken to the hospital. they responded to the scientific research lab where smoke was pouring from a truck. investigators said acid had a chemical reaction and started spewing out gas. the firefighters and the officers were checked out and should be okay. here is some advice from the weather department, don't wander to far from the umbrella. >> sandhya patel has more. >> with good reason you want to hang on to the um -- umbrella. we will be seeing some rain and i'll let you know when coming up. >> thanks, sandhya. caught on camera.
