friends were gathered for a birthday party. abc 7 news reporter is live in oakland. you spoke with the friends, cornell? >> reporter: hi, natasha, i did. they talked about a young man who was kind, full of life. things certainly not the same at lake meter today. flowers have been left in the spot where jack lewis lost his life when a tree limb gave away. >> he was really great guy. >> reporter: clare brooke is dealing with the unbelievable loss of her good friend jack lewis. >> it doesn't feel real that the point. >> clare said she and jack came to celebrate a friend's birthday. the group was hanging out by the lake. some were climbing trees. >> there was three people sitting on the branch and jack jumped up to hang on it. it fell. >> reporter: police say the 16-year-old was crushed by the enormous weight of the tree limb which broke off killing lewis.

flowers and condolence cards have been left at the site. the tree and broken limbs removed by the city crews overnight. >> he was full of life and joy. he never had anything bad to say about anybody. >> reporter: in a statement mayor libby said yesterday's tragic accident was a heartbreaking loss for our city. i join with oaklanders across our city in expressing my deepest sympathy. jack lewis was a junior at oakland tech. a guidance told me that the school staff was notified about the tragedy today. she said that lewis was thinking about going to college. >> a super handsome dude. like, he was super nice to me every time i saw him he was super happy to see me and everyone. >> i feel sorry for his family. >> some parents say many trees have been impacted by the drought. >> i go to diamond park and i see a lot of trees there that are kind of dying. i get more concerned about it. >> reporter: the city said public works crews will examine the tree to find a possible

someone called police after spotting a suitcase inside one of the tunnels. officers determined the suitcase pose nod harm. the tunnel was closed for about an hour. a new detail on a hazmat incident in fremont that sent five firefighters and two police officers to the hospital. all seven have been released at this point. they were responded to the scientific research lab yesterday afternoon. investigators said four kinds of acid inside a drum had a chemical reaction and spewed out gas. 11 buildings had to be evacuated. the ceo said they carried out the same procedure for five years now and there hasn't been any problems. results of tests on the waste container are expected on tuesday. we have new details on a crash in hayward that killed a man on interstate 808 overnight. around 1:30 this morning the man's car rear ended a van in the northbound lane here 238. he got out and ran to the southbound lanes. several vehicles hit him as he

was running across the freeway. investigators are trying to find out why he ran. >> we don't know. we have to contact any witnesses that may have seen the collision. we don't know his intentions. >> within 20 minutes of the first crash, chp said there were three more accidents in that area that forced them to shut down most of the highway for a couple of hours. today san francisco's police chief said he understands community frustration after the deadly police shooting of a man in the bay view neighborhood. at a town hall meeting hosted by police last night there were calls for chief greg suhr to be fired. police shot and killed 26-year-old mario woods thursday afternoon. police say he had knife and refused several commands to drop it and moved toward an officer. they say another cop fired at him in self-defense. >> people have a right to be upset. even people in the meeting said there's so many great cops out

these may be the clearest close up images of pluto's surface we've seen in decades. nasa's new horizon spacecraft snapped these in july during the closest fly by of pluto. it shows craters, mountains, and glacial terrain along a strip for 50 miles wide. even though it passed it in the summer, it will take about a year to transfer all the photos and data from the fly by. a lot of you tweeting about the happy and record-breaking reunion. you're taking at stephen and nancy payne along with their cat ginger. this picture provided by the marin humane society. she was microchipped. the paynes got a phone call they

location like the bay in san francisco overnight dropping into the low 50s. that rain will arrive shortly after the midnight hour. on the storm impact scale we're giving this one a number one. it's a light and has minimal impacts on the bay area. future weather as we go into motion we'll show you saturday night into early sunday morning. by 4:00 in the morning you notice the moisture confined to the north bay. as we get into the 6:00 or 7:00 hour on sunday morning, you notice the light showers working to the heart of the bay area. but watch what happens as the system dives to the south. it encounters a lot of dry air. by 10:00 sunday morning as it approaches the south bay it falls apart and loses a lot of moisture. by midday in the early afternoon we're drying out our skies. in terms of total rainfall this is going to be light in terms of amounts. north bay around a quarter of an inch. maybe a little bit above that. most locations outside the north
