passengers filming from inside. good morning, everyone. i'm reena ninan. >> i'm richard bacon. we begin with reassurance from the president, vowing to overcome the evolving terror threat facing the nation. >> the president addressed the nation last night. declaring the san bernardino attack as an act of terrorism. >> he said the husband and wife shooters had gone down the dark path of radicalization. he laid out a strategy to defeat isis. our coverage begins with lana zak in washington. good morning, lana. >> reporter: good morning, reena and richard. there were not big surprises in the president's speech. he had discussed many of these proposals previously. aides say these remarks and their tone were important to president, who worked on the speech throughout the weekend. >> the threat from terrorism is real. but we will overcome it. we'll destroy isil and any other organization that tries to harm us.

our success won't depend on tough talk or abandoning our values. or giving in to fear. >> reporter: in a rare primetime oval office address, president obama spoke directly to the american public. >> as commander in chief, i have no greater responsibility than the security of the american people. >> reporter: the president outlined his approach to fight terrorism's new face. calling on congress to vote to authorize the continued use of military force against isis. >> i think it's time for congress to vote to demonstrate that the american people are united and committed to this fight. >> reporter: he urged legislation that would prevent anyone on the terror watch list from easily buying a gun. and ordered a review of the visa program that allowed the female killer in the san bernardino shooting to enter the united states. republican presidential candidates wasted no time responding to the president's speech. on fox, marco rubio said this was more of the same. >> nothing that happened in the speech tonight is going to assuage people's fears. >> reporter: and immediately after the speech, donald trump tweeted, is that all there is?

we need a new president fast. in his remarks, the president seemed to anticipate that response. >> even in this political season, let's not forget that freedom is more powerful than fear. >> reporter: and the president addressed muslims directly, enlisting their support in trying to help fight back against radicalization. and called on all americans to reject discrimination. reena? richard? >> lana, the president relayed three things he wants from lawmakers. congress to make sure no one on the no-fly list is able to buy a gun. he wants congress to have stronger screening for travelers without visas. and he wants continued use of military force against isis. do you think he can expect cooperation from congress? >> reporter: if the initial response by republicans is any indication, he'll face an uphill battle when it comes to dealing with congress. that very legislation about trying to stop terrorists from

allowing anybody on the terrorist watch list to purchase a gun actually failed in the senate just a few days ago. of those three things, the one most likely to get bipartisan support is probably tougher screenings for anyone wanting to come to the united states. reena? richard? >> okay, lana zak, live in washington. thank you so much, lana. >> thank you. san bernardino public health employees are returning to work this morning for the first time since their colleagues were killed in the shooting rampage. >> several who made it out alive are theiring the horror that they witnessed. one person saying, the shooters burst into the room from the left. blowing out windows. at least one survivor escaped by jumping through the shattered glass. in this morning's "usa today" the widow of nicholas thalasinos says her husband and farook were arguing about the holocaust right before the shooting. >> fbi agents around the globe are scrambling to find out just how the terror plot originated. >> over the weekend, investigators made two trips to the home of farook's former

neighbor and friend, accused of purchasing two of the murder weapons. here's more from cecilia vega. >> reporter: the investigation into that deadly shooting turning to a raid of the family home of enrique marquez. law enforcement saying he's farook's one-time friend and neighbor, suspected of supplying him with those two high-powered rifles used in the massacre. the fbi raiding the home. >> did he provide the guns to farook? >> reporter: authorities say there is no information that marquez played any role in the shooting that left 14 people dead. marquez now reportedly checked himself into a mental health facility. this neighbor says she noticed a change in farook about a year ago. before he started to change, what was he like? what's the biggest differences? >> the biggest difference was his dress. his beard. he was more withdrawn. he started growing more a beard. he started wearing his white things. you know, the long drape outfit, whatever it is. >> reporter: this new photo of farook as a baby, with his

family. his sister and brother-in-law now saying they, too, are angry. angry for not knowing farook and his wife were living a double life. do you feel like you didn't know your brother? >> no, at this time, i feel like he had a double life. i feel like he was very good at concealing everything from all of us. >> reporter: but his father telling an italian newspaper his son was fascinated by isis, hated israel. and shared ideology of isis leader al baghdadi. cecilia vega, abc news, san bernardino, california. a robbery at a mall 20 minutes from san bernardino brought out massive police response last night. video captured three masked thieves using a sledge hammer to smash jewelry store cases at the mall in riverside. sending people running in fear. witnesses say the noise sounded like gunshots. the army of police officers arrived on the scene, putting the mall on lockdown while they searched for the robbers. but they managed to slip away. in london, an apparent lone

wolf terror attack on the subway. the suspect stabbed two people. witnesses say he shouted this is for syria. cell phone video, you can see there, captured it all. police brought him down with a taser. he's charged with attempted murder. british authorities are investigating the attack as a terrorist incident. there are several major developments in the chicago police shooting of laquan mcdonald. video of that shooting sparked national outrage after it showed the teen being hit by 16 bullets. the justice department is launching an investigation into the patterns and practices of the police department. and mayor rahm emanuel said late last night that the head of the independent police review authority has resigned. a somber anniversary today. 74 years since the japanese attack on pearl harbor drew the united states into world war ii. flags across the country are being flown at half staff in honor of the 2400 people killed back in 1941.

presents. it will arrive at the space station on wednesday morning. >> talk about a special delivery. a well-known pilot has been killed in a crash in california. mike mangold was among two people killed when the high-performance jet they were on crashed. at the airport in apple valley. he was a famous acrobatics pilot and a commercial pilot for american airlines. in business news, u.s. investors are hoping that a year-end rally starts today. one expert is saying stocks will finish flat for the year. and a rate hike is more likely next week following friday's positive job report and sharp gains on wall street. overnight, stock futures were down slightly and overseas markets are mixed. and it's now three straight box office wins for "the hunger games: mockingjay part two." the film brought in $18.6 million. pushing the domestic total to $227 million. "krampus" was in second.

yet another storm moving into the northwest today. the radar shows the heavy rain that will pound coastal areas and lower elevations. there will be snow further inland as well. as today wears on, winds will become stronger. some areas could feel gusts over 70 miles an hour by tomorrow. checking the morning road conditions. no surprise, wet and slippery across the northwest. clear for most other areas except for the mid-atlantic and parts of florida. if you're flying, weather-related airport delays are possible in miami. unexpected news from former president jimmy carter. he is cancer free. >> yeah, back in august, doctors found stage 4 skin cancer had spread to his liver and brain. he's since undergone radiation. and drug therapy. carter made the announcement to the sunday school class he teaches in his hometown of plains, georgia. >> they didn't find any cancer at all. so -- so i have good news.

[ applause ] >> thank god. >> so a lot of people prayed for me. and i appreciate that. >> oh, lovely. doctors say it's too early to say that mr. carter is cured of cancer. but he continues to remain optimistic. an anxious wait for reality star kristin cavallari, wife of chicago bears quarterback jay cutler. her brother, michael, has been missing since the day after thanksgiving. his abandoned car was found in a remote road off of utah. the engine running. the air bag deployed. his cell phone and laptop inside. michael was traveling from colorado to illinois, where his sister lives. a little too much excitement for a group of thrillseekers in new jersey. the men were about to skydive from a small plane when the engine failed. someone's helmet cam was rolling, as you can see. the plane hit the mud and flipped over nose-first. fortunately, they all walked away with only minor injuries.
