police searching for clues right now. ♪ and paying tribute to paris. u2 returning to the city of lights just weeks after that terror attack singing out against terror helping that city and the world heal. ♪ and good morning, america. a lot to get to this monday morning including that rare oval office address from president obama, his first in five years. the president wanted to calm nerves, convince the public he has a strategy in place to defeat isis and stop more acts of terror like we saw in california last week. but we want to begin with those big new details overnight in the investigation into that attack. the first picture of syed farook returning to the u.s. with his new wife. and new details of what really

happened inside the conference room during the deadly attack. we have full team coverage. abc's brian ross starts us off with the latest. good morning, brian. >> reporter: good morning, robin. a collective sigh of relief this morning for counterterrorism officials in los angeles who had braced for a terror attack all day sunday based on an intelligence report from iraq, clearly now wrong that isis had planned an unspecified follow-on attack there but it helps to explain the urgency. today, u.s. agents around the world are urgently trying to track the backgrounds and contacts of the killers. this photo, obtained by abc news, was taken in chicago when the newly married couple arrived in the u.s. for the first time in july 2014. as the fbi discovered in a raid of the couple's home, the two tried to hide their tracks by destroying computers and phones. although syed farook did leave behind his voice on a phone answering system. >> syed farook. >> is not available. >> reporter: the voice of a killer. >> syed farook. >> reporter: but authorities

believe he was radicalized by his 29-year-old wife tashfeen malik who he met on a matrimonial website. she was born in pakistan, moved to saudi arabia and then returned to pakistan for college to become a pharmacist. >> she was among the talented students of her class, hard working. >> reporter: the mystery of her evolution from brilliant student and mother of a baby girl to cold-blooded terrorist firing at police out of the back of this suv declaring allegiance to isis remains a key to this investigation. >> maybe she sought out a spouse that shared some of her same ideology that she knew she could possibly groom to do what she was interested in doing. >> reporter: now the race is on to see if there are others. it was 2:00 in the morning saturday when an fbi s.w.a.t. team broke down the doors of the home of the man who provided the high-powered rifles used in the attack. he has been identified as enrique marquez, a one-time licensed security guard who

lived next door to farook as they grew up. >> they were very close friends. very close. of anybody in this neighborhood, enrique was the closest to syed. >> reporter: marquez bought the two assault weapons that somehow ended up in the hands of farook in november 2011 and february 2012. farook bought the two pistols at about the same time in san diego, november 2011 and january 2012. farook also bought more than 6,000 bullets online, a purchase not routinely passed on to the fbi. there is no indication this morning that the friend was involved in the attack, but agents are pursuing anyone with any connection to farook, including his father, syed sr. who authorities tell abc news now has been put on the terror watch list as a precaution to prevent him from leaving the country. >> on the list now. >> yes, exactly. >> thanks, brian. we're going to turn to president obama. in only the third oval office address of his presidency, he called the massacre a terrorist

attack for the first time and vowed to win the war against isis and warned against turning that conflict into a war against muslims here at home and around the world. abc's jon karl is at the white house with more on the president's strategy. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, george. the president said the terrorist threat has, quote, evolved into a new phase, and for the first time, he called the san bernardino massacre a terrorist act that was likely inspired by isis. >> we have no evidence that the killers were directed by a terrorist organization overseas or that they were part of a broader conspiracy here at home. but it is clear that the two of them had gone down the dark path of radicalization. so, this was an act of terrorism, designed to kill innocent people. >> reporter: addressing the nation from the oval office, the president defended his administration's efforts to protect the u.s. homeland and his strategy to combat isis abroad. >> here's what i want you to know, the threat from terrorism is real, but we will overcome it. we will destroy isil and any

other organization that tries to harm us. >> reporter: the president called for a review of the visa program that one of the san bernardino attackers used to come to the u.s., and he once again called for tighter gun laws. >> our intelligence and law enforcement agencies, no matter how effective they are, cannot identify every would-be mass shooter, whether that individual is motivated by isil or some other hateful ideology. what we can do and must do is make it harder for them to kill. >> reporter: the president also answered his critics who called for a war against radical islam. he instead labeled isis a cult of death that does not represent muslims. >> we cannot turn against one another by letting this fight be defined as a war between america and islam. that does not mean denying that an extremist ideology has spread within some muslim communities. it's a real problem. muslims must confront it without

excuse. >> reporter: the president urged americans not to demonize muslims in the united states. saying they are our friends, our neighbors and our co-workers. as for the president's republican critics, robin, they said the president offered no new strategy on how to defeat isis. >> we're going to talk about that, jon. thank you. terrorism is now the top issue in the race for the white house. the candidates were quick to react to the president's speech. republican front-runner donald trump even live-tweeting throughout it. abc's tom llamas has that story for us. >> reporter: this morning democratic presidential front-runner hillary clinton echoing republicans, saying the u.s. needs to do more in taking on isis. >> well, we're not winning. but it's too soon to say that we are doing everything we need to do. >> reporter: the former secretary of state calling on facebook, youtube, and twitter, to help the government fight isis by limiting the terror network's outreach online. and clinton explaining to george why she's refusing to use the phrase radical islam when discussing the topic.

>> well, the problem is that that sounds like we are declaring war against a religion. >> reporter: donald trump not mincind his words saying we need to profile and monitor some mosques. >> people are dead. a lot of people are dead. so, everybody wants to be politically correct, and that's part of the problem we have with our country. >> reporter: trump saying the recent terror attacks shows we need to arm more americans, and he knows what he would have done if he was in that room in san bernardino. >> i can tell you one thing. if i'm in there and i have a gun, we're going down shooting. we're going to knock 'em out. okay? one way or the other. >> reporter: senator ted cruz, surging in iowa, may be trying to outtrump trump. he's out with this ad full of tough talk. >> and every islamic militant will know, if you wage jihad against us, you're signing your death warrant. >> reporter: as for those tweets, trump was live-tweeting during the president's address. these tweets caught our eye. here's one, well, obama refused to say, he just can't say it,

that we're at war with radical islamic terrorists. and also this one, obama said in his speech that muslims are our sports heroes. what sport is he talking about and who is obama profiling? trump seems to have for gotten about several muslim athletes including kareem abdul-jabbar and muhammad ali. george. >> thank you, tom. we're joined now by republican presidential candidate dr. ben carson. thank you for joining us again. in your statement after the president's speech, you said we need real solutions, not empty rhetoric. so, how specifically would your war strategy be different from president obama's? >> so, first of all, i would not be spending a lot of time talking about what we're not going to do, and i would not be talking about how the american people are afraid. i think what's going on is that the american people are frustrated and the reason that they're frustrated is because, you know, we won't even use the words islamic terrorists. >> but what would you do that president obama is not doing? >> so, that's what i'm getting

to. so, my point is that the attitude has to be different. we have to have a commander in chief who is willing to come out forcefully against this so that the american people have confidence that something is being done. that means i would be talking about using the banking systems and all the monetary mechanisms available. >> but isn't that what president obama is doing? >> well, hold on. one of the ways that they're able to take care of those people is through monetary mechanisms. if we frustrate them so they can't get money to people -- >> your rival, senator ted cruz, has said we should go further, we should carpet bomb them into oblivion. do you agree with that? >> i probably am not going to want to just blanketly carpet bomb people. i really want to be much more specific in targeting people

because obviously we don't want to just kill people in general. >> and finally, sir, you have taken a hit in the polls recently. donald trump now leading by more than 20 points nationally. ted cruz rivaling you both nationally and in iowa right now. what's gone wrong, and how do you fix it? >> basically people feel that i don't have foreign policy experience. but the fact of the matter is, if you look at all the people who are running, how many of them have had a lot of foreign policy experience? the answer is no, none, not many, you know, maybe hillary. but here's the question, who has many 2:00 a.m. calls where they have to make life and death decisions? who has established new things that have powerful effects on people's lives? that's the kind of commander in chief i would be looking for. >> dr. carson, thank you for your time this morning. >> thank you so much, george. >> waiting for more answers from dr. carson. >> we are. we're going to turn now, though, to the victims of the terror attacks. they were remembered at special

sunday services all around san bernardino and around the country. and this morning, we're learning those new details about the attack, what happened inside that conference room as more stories from the tragedy emerge. abc's cecilia vega has been in san bernardino all weekend. and she joins us now with the latest. good morning, cecilia. >> reporter: robin, good morning to you. it is still a crime scene here but we now know what happened inside this building behind me was a work training and an annual holiday party that turned into four minutes of sheer terror. >> we have several down in a conference room. several down. >> reporter: this morning, new details from inside that conference room. one witness telling abc news, the room was a large space packed with tables, a movie screen and a podium on one side for presentations, a christmas tree on the other. syed farook and tashfeen malik wearing tactical gear and carrying extra ammo burst in through this door at the center of the conference room opening

fire, blowing out windows and striking many of the people at this table, the very table farook had been sitting at earlier playing trivia games with his co-workers. he left his jacket behind, saying he'd be right back. the only other escape, a door at the opposite end of the room. the couple unloading at least 65 rounds. people taking cover anywhere they could. at least one survivor jumping through the shattered windows. amanda gaspard hid under a table, closed her eyes, and didn't move. her family revealing one of the shooters fired right at her, but hit her only in the arm and the leg. her injuries not life-threatening. shannon johnson was there sitting next to his friend denise peraza. denise survived now writing they huddled next to each other. shannon didn't make it out alive. 1 of 14 killed. denise saying, i will always remember his left arm wrapped around me holding me as close as possible next to him behind that

chair, and amidst all the chaos i'll always remember him saying these three words, i got you. those who knew farook said they noticed changes about a year ago. >> i think after he got married he kind of kept to himself a little bit more. >> reporter: but they say there were never any warning signs. do you feel like you didn't know your brother? >> no, at this time, i feel like he had a double life. i feel like he was very good at concealing everything from all of us. >> reporter: yeah, they say he was living a double life. there are still five people recovering in the hospital this morning. and their stories are just now emerging. one of them we told you about, amanda gaspard. she somehow mustered up the strength to pray for her co-workers right there with her, robin and george, we know so many of them did not make it out of here alive. >> cecilia, thank you. to hear those words, i got you. >> people looking out for each other. >> it says a lot.

overseas now to a terror scare in london. a man who attacked people with a knife at a subway station has been charged with attempted murder. police are calling it an act of terrorism. abc's terry moran has the latest. >> taser him, taser him. >> reporter: it's been dreaded here and in so many cities around the world. >> he stabbed someone. >> reporter: cell phone video captures a terrifying scene at a london subway station on saturday. a man armed with a knife, repeatedly lunging at police, after allegedly stabbing two people. eyewitnesses say he was slashing and hacking at the neck of one victim and slashed the neck of another. >> drop it! >> reporter: police taser him and then again, another 50,000 volts, and he finally drops his knife, and they overpower him. both victims survive, but scotland yard is calling the attack a terrorist incident. media reports say the man shouted "this is for syria" before launching his frenzied attack. but see here how muslims on the scene angrily rebuke him. >> you're no muslim, bruv. you ain't no muslim.

>> reporter: the suspect, 29 years old. he's been charged with attempted murder. police searched the home in london. this incident coming after those multiple highly planned and coordinated attacks in paris marks a different kind of terror. smaller scale. harder to stop. meyer was in court today to face those charges. eyewitnesses said he was tearful at that appearance, and there is no evidence so far that he was involved in any wider terror network, but the attack that happened here just like the far worse attack in san bernardino, it's the nightmare scenario, homegrown, secretive, self-starting terror. george. >> terry, thanks very much. >> that hashtag, you ain't no muslim, bruv gone all over the world. >> it has. the justice department is now launching a civil rights investigation to look into whether the practices of the chicago police department violate federal law. it is the latest fallout from the shooting of laquan mcdonald.

the head of the police review board has also resigned. well, thousands of people have been forced from their h e homes during record floods in northern england. the army is rescuing people after more than a foot of rain fell in just one day. and for the first time beijing has declared a red alert because of pollution. the smog there is so thick, schools are closed. side-by-side images show clear skies just last week compared to the city today. and in southern california, a deadly plane crash at a desert airport. two people, including stunt pilot mike mangold were killed when that plane erupted in flames during takeoff. and a powerful message from bono as u2 performed in paris. the concert was rescheduled after last month's attacks. bono shouted "vive la france" before paying tribute to the victims there assuring the crowd, we are all parisians. the eagles of death metal sat right there in the front row. they were, of course, the band playing at the bataclan theatre when the attacks rang out there.

thanksgiving after a passerby spotted it about 100 feet from the road in a remote area of grand county, utah. his laptop and cell phone abandoned inside. the car was still running and the driver's side air bag was deployed. >> the temperatures on the night of the incident were in the mid to low 20s. very, very hostile conditions for somebody that was not properly equipped to be here. could be fatal. >> reporter: credit card receipts led authorities to this convenience store in monticello, about 100 miles from where his car was found. cavallari last seen on the security cameras wearing a green sweatshirt and blue baseball cap as he pumped gas. >> there's been ground teams in this area probably covering a 15-square-mile area. >> reporter: cavallari's husband, jay cutler, the quarterback for the chicago bares, was asked about his brother-in-law's disappearance following his team's tough loss sunday. >> yeah, has it been a tough

investigating this disturbing cell phone video showing the moment cops opened fire, killing an attempted bank robber wielding a razor. [ gunshots ] watch here as 51-year-old david wineset who is shirtless raises his hand, holding the weapon. pointing it at police, who take aim and fire their weapons. as another camera angle captures the filament from an officer's stun gun flying toward the suspect. >> he was challenged by the officers in the street. and at some point during that confrontation, he did raise his hand with a straight-edge razor in it, and he was shot. >> reporter: investigators say saturday's bizarre spree began when wineset, who has a long criminal history, including extortion and bank robbery walked into a bank and handed the teller this handwritten note reading, give me all of your 50s, 100s, and 20s. please, i have a bomb.

[ applause ] >> reporter: this morning, startling good news by former president jimmy carter. his cancer, undetected by brain scans. >> so, a lot of people prayed for me, and i appreciate that. >> reporter: just four months ago, the outlook somber for

the 91-year-old when announcing he had stage four skin cancer that spread to his liver and brain. >> they did an mri and found there were four spots of melanoma on my brain. >> reporter: while doctors removed about 10% of his liver, carter received radiation to treat the lesions on his brain and regular doses of the recently approved drug keytruda, a type of therapy that helps the patient's own immune system target cancer cells. the 39th president has remained active during treatment. attending church and volunteering last month with his wife, rosalynn, for habitat for humanity. while it's far too soon to say if carter is cured, he remains optimistic about his diagnosis stating "i will continue to receive regular three-week immunotherapy treatments." >> and dr. besser is here. we're very happy for jimmy carter. >> yes. >> what is his prognosis now? >> well, you know, this is just terrific news. but it is too early to say anything about prognosis. most doctors would want to wait

three to five years because you can have microscopic amounts of tumors somewhere in the body. so, he's going to remain on the drug as long as he can tolerate it. >> but, you know, people tuning in, especially nose who are facing cancer and their families, and they're saying okay, especially when it comes to invasive melanoma, what does this mean possibly? >> well, i mean it can give some hope, but it's important to put some reality in that. in the trial that was done to approve that drug, only 1 in 14 one in four patients responded to the drug at all. those who responded didn't respond as dramatically as he did. there's hope there's some progress but most patients aren't seeing the dramatic turnaround that president carter seems to be seeing. >> what about, though, with this drug with other cancers. >> yeah, well, this drug was approved as well for lung cancer but it gives us the sense of -- we always used to talk about the cure for cancer and now we're talking more about specific cures for specific types of tumor.

discovery ever made. colombia's president says his government found the famed spanish ship "san jose" often referred to as the holy grail of shipwrecks. one of the biggest findings and identification of underwater heritage in the history of humanity, he claims. the answer to a 300-year-old mystery. the loot, estimated between $3 billion and $17 billion. the "san jose" went down during battle in 1708 off the coast of colombia with millions of pieces of gold, silver and jewels on board. the government says the ship, found laying on its side, identified by its unique bronze cannons with engraved dolphins. a court might have to determine exactly who owns the rights to the treasure. a u.s.-based salvage company claims it discovered the resting place of the "san jose" 30 years ago, but that the colombian government reneged on an agreement to split the treasure. all right. this fight's been going on for 30 years already, so generally

the thing for many to shed the pounds. for many when the new year's eve ball drops, the battle of the bulge begins. in a world of fitbits and apps, the company that helps millions shed pounds is waging an updated war with obesity. with its new logo and jazzy fitness app, this is not your grandmother's weight watcher. if you had to sum it up, what is different now? >> people with this new program are really shifting their mind hiv set a lot. >> reporter: shifting by focusing more on good health and less on counting calories as a way to squeeze in that extra treat. >> people would really spend a lot of time trying to figure out how do i get my doritos in? i can do it if i adjust this or adjust that. now it's not as important to make sure how they're getting it in. it's much more important to say, what am i putting in my body? how is that going to make me feel? >> reporter: the new campaign, beyond the scale, comes at an important time for the 53-year-old weight watchers. ♪ pizza with pepperoni, mozzarella no baloney ♪ ♪ weight watchers this is living ♪

>> reporter: will you stick with it? >> yes. >> absolutely. >> reporter: weight watchers said 38 of the 40 trial participants lost weight on the plan. >> i'm down 50 pounds. >> i'm down 30 pounds. >> i'm down 18 in the last six months. >> reporter: but not everything has changed. still going to do the weigh-ins? >> we are going to do the weigh-ins because it's an important metric. but not the only metric. >> reporter: no doubt, people come to weight watchers because they do want to lose weight. but the company says now the focus is on the kind of food you're eating. how much activity you're getting into your life. they think that is going to be the success, guys to permanent weight loss. it's kind of what we all know. but in weight watchers, it's sort of been a new mantra to sort of think about the whole body, not just the scale and pounds. >> real success story there is. >> makes a lot of sense. just in time for the new year. >> yeah, absolutely. >> after christmas. >> let's go over to robin. >> i'm with you, george. totally with you on that. now to toxic workers. more likely than not we have all had to deal with one. now, a new study from the

harvard business school finds they truly are bad for business. tory johnson is here to tell us what you can do if you have to work with one of these types of people. and, tory, you talk about there are different types of toxic workers. tell us about the first one. >> the first one is the screamer. no matter what, this person is always yelling because they can. that's their way of exerting authority. that's their way of sort of getting their point across. there's no need for it. but they get away with it and nobody stops them. sometimes it's simply for attention that they're doing it. if you're faced with this kind of person, there are a couple of specific things that you can do. the first is you have to stand up for yourself. so for a lot of people, it's very difficult to sort of speak back and say, don't scream at me. don't talk to me that way. but by sitting there and taking it, you're giving the person permission to continue. and so one of the easiest things to do is walk away. walk away. go to the restroom. get a cup of coffee. a drink of water. take a walk. whatever it is because it helps

you to avoid from getting emoti emotional. walk away. >> we have the screamer. this is one that bothers me. the demeanor. >> that's difficult. this is the person that insults you. my 3-year-old could do that better than you. why are you so slow? i can't believe they hired you here. you're so dumb. they use humiliating gestures. eye rolls. constantly rolling their eyes. or waving off a hand. very dismissive. just very dismissively. and that crushes your confidence and it's very difficult to deliver your best when you feel worthless, so this is something that you want to combat. you want to do something about this. i think one of the best things is to calmly confront this person. instead of saying, why are you such a bully? what are you demeaning me all the time? which is only going to, sort of, fuel the flame. that's not necessarily going to work. you want to be ready with very specific examples. when you compare me to your 3-year-old kids, it doesn't do a lot in terms of allowing me to deliver my best.

when you call me dumb, it makes me feel worthless and i can't deliver for you what you need. and so you want to be able to point to specific examples and firmly ask the person to stop. please don't use that language to me. please don't speak to me that way. i think when you're firm as opposed to accusatory, it helps in that situation. >> be very direct like that. >> yes. >> the third one you said, is the schemer. >> this is the person who withholds information, deliberately keeps you out of the loop. and this could be the kind of thing i keep you off e-mail chains. i don't invite you to specific meetings. things that are obvious. you don't get a lot of credit. in those cases, document the details. you can specifically say, i wasn't included on that e-mail, and, therefore, i wasn't able to do this. please make sure that i'm included in those things. please make sure that, you know, when you can give a specific suggestion as opposed to making an accusation. by giving a suggestion, you often help to avoid

you're working with him again. you brought him the screenplay. you said this was the kind of role that you have always wanted to play. that you could be the actor you wanted to be. what did you mean by that? >> i love the script. in many ways. it's the true events that inspired herman melville to write "moby dick." i love the detail this shows. the character is full of life and adventure. it's a drama in amongst the action sequences. >> what do you think the public has such a fascination with this story line? why do you think that is? >> it's a timeless thing. i think we love to be swept up in epic adventures. ones that are full of heart and soul and what these men endured for 90 days in the ocean and survived. the horrific circumstances. the strength of the human spirit. what allows you to continue to fight, not give up. a number of themes i think is something anyone can relate to. >> and it's a wonderful cast
