about the death of a bay view man last week. they're asking to review the city's use of force policies. mario woods was carrying a knife when police shot and killed him. vic lee is live at the third baptist church in the city tonight with more. vic? >> reporter: that have meeting is about to start soon here at the church. now, mayor lee says he's seen the videos that raise a lot of questions and he wants questions answered now. mayor ed lee said the videos were deeply upsetting. videos showing the 26-year-old mario woods' final moments wednesday afternoon. woods was shot with bean bags and pepper spray and maintained he moved threateningly at them with a knife. many others say he did not.

number of close encounters with drones and this is quite possibly the closest yet, coming within just feet of that california patrol helicopter on saturday. pilots tell me they're worried because there is going to be more drones in the skies. this weekend's call between a chp helicopter and a drone was a surprise for the crew aboard. >> there is a drone here at a thousand feet. >> reporter: that is a portion of the radio conversation between the pilot and control tower, pilots say drones are the newest flight hazards. >> there was a drone around 800 feet, within 200 feet of that plane there, flying around me. that is very close. >> jay is a pilot and instructor and said his close encounter happened just months ago. the faa expects nearly half a million drones will be lost this holiday season as they get

amateur operators so they're working with airports to roll out new public service announcements. >> fly below 400 feet and avoid flying near airports, stadiums and people. >> the chp was able to track the drone operator to his home. police didn't arrest or issue a citation because this falls under the faa jurisdiction. but it's not a federal police agency, insteading issuing fines. penalties aside, pilots just want drone operators to fly safely. >> it doesn't have to damage the helicopter. if you incapacitate the pilot, it's catastrophic. >> any time it flies over 400 feet, pilots say it's entering into their air space. >> and from drones to this problem. we have been reporting incidents where people pointed lasers.

him. here is what we know so far about this case. investigators in cities across the bay area notice an up tick in car break ins too similar to be coincidence. these shattered windows and... >> this gang seems to have a route they'd run around the bay. and would hit multiple cars. >> the common connection? >> multiple ghost town members working together when conducting these operations. >> electronics were taken from the mccarthy ranch in milpitas and stanford shopping center in palo alto. there are 72 break ins, complicating the case. >> you have to figure out how these are connected. it doesn't take 21 people to break into a car when 21 people are charged. >> he's concerned about the alleged connections to the ghost

and there are 30, 40 miles per hour wind gusts make it difficult driving. rainfall totals across the bay area, most of you will see a half inch up to three quarters of an inch. up north, we're looking at up to an inch of rain with the first storm. winter storm watch wednesday night to thursday evening. make sure you have chains. expect long delays if you're going to brave the storm. 18-24 inches expected over the passes and up to three feet at the highest elevations. so this is probably not a good time to be traveling. fog will be a problem in the morning so it will be dense in the morning. upper 40s to low 50s to get you going.

basic income would replace other payments. right now, analysts are not sure where the country would come up with the money to make the payments, however. thanksgiving week proved to be disappointing for some school districts. students supposed to attend before the holiday but some parents chose to take them out early, costing districts a lot of money. abc7 news reporter lyanne explains. >> when only 87% of the children showed up, the school district had a problem, some families decided to take the week off. >> it's a problem, over two and a half days we lose about $10,000. >> the district only has two elementary schools and an elementary school. the average daily attendance is a funding formula used by the state f a student doesn't show up for school, then, the district loses out on the

funding. another district also experienced a drop in the number of students during that week. >> they'll be traveling. >> other districts learned from experience it doesn't pay to stay open the entire week. the novato school district is one example. >> students weren't in class so they're losing instructional time, and we're losing money because they were absent. so we decided to close the week. >> they makeup the days by starting earlier. the school district is considering doing away with classes on wednesday before thanksgiving, the board votes this month. >> of course, you know we're going to want to wait and see how numbers look next year before making a step to give them possibly monday and tuesday off. >> more to bring you, recruiting
