>> leave from the k.g. o tv broadcast center. this is abc7 news. >> it's saturday, december th. thanks for waking up with us, i'm chris ngyen. we are off to a cool start across the bay area. let's check in with meteorologist lisa argen. she has the first look at live doppler hd. >> hi, chris. up in the north bay a little wind-chill factor. santa rosa feels like it's freezing. partly cloudy skies out there, some clear spots in the protected valleys and it is certainly cold. the clouds on the increase today in anticipation of the next system which we will call storm 2 on our impact scale. it's 41 hayward. good morning fremont 45 for you. 48 in san mateo and about 50 on the coast. so with the cooler start this morning, we will have another day with temperatures in the upper 50s for most locations. a little more sunshine for you in the south bay with numbers in and around 60.

also east bay about 60 today with upper 50s elsewhere. the clouds will continue to push into the bay and we will talk about the winds and the snow, which all will arrive for kind of a wet and windy wild sunday on the way. chris. >> lisa, thank you. breaking news out of fremont. a man died after a collision on northbound 880 this morning, shutting down all lanes. chp tells us a car was stalled in the far left lane when another star slammed into the back of it of officers do not know if the man was inside the stalled car or outside of it prior to the accident. all northbound 880 lanes between auto mall parkway and south fremont are closed follow further notice. more breaking news for out of san francisco. one person is dead after a car hit a pedestrian on interstate 280 earlier this morning. it happened just before 2:00 in the northbound lanes at the ocean avenue on-ramp. chp has reopened all lanes after being closed for nearly two hours. stick with abc7 news nor updates on our breaking news. and be sure to follow us on

twitter at abc7 news bay area. 6:01 is our time. hundreds of babies have been exposed to tuberculosis in the south bay putting them at risk of the severe illness. a nurse tested positive. doctors say there's a low chance the nurse passed it on to anyone else. but nobody is taking any chances. >> if this were to happen to any one baby, that would one baby too many. >> at santa clara valley medical center officials are trying to head off a health emergency. they say a nurse had contact with babies and active tuberculosis while working with newborns and she didn't know it. >> she did not have cough, so was not coughing up tuberculosis during the period of time that she was working. >> while that may have delayed her diagnosis, it also means she wasn't as contagious as she could have been. >> while the individual did have active or infectious t.b. disease, she was probably not

able to spread it that well simply because the individual didn't have any symptoms at all. >> still, the hospital says 350 babies may have been exposed, along with hundreds of moms and staff members. the adults will be screened and treated, if necessary. the chair of pediatrics is recommending all of the babies be treated with a daily antibiotic for six to nine months. >> when a baby gets tuberculosis, it can get into the bloodstream and travel throughout the body to other areas, including the brain, which is the most feared complication. the public health department said santa clara county has the fourth highest rate of t.b. in california. in san jose, katie marzullo, abc news. >> we learned that a san francisco police officers is named as one of the officers shot and killing mario woods previously faced a lawsuit for

excessive force back in charles 13. he's charles august. he shot him him along with these officers you see on the screen. all of the officers are on administrative leave, which is routine in cases like these. police tell us there are three different investigations into this shooting. his family has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against the san francisco police department. their attorneys say video footage disputes police accounts that woods threatened officers with a knife. >> he did not raise his hands in any kind of threatening manner before the barrage of shots were against him. >> he was the best of me. and he redeemed himself. >> police say they are unable to comment on pending lawsuits. sky 7hd was there when a group of high school students blocked traffic in union square. they left classes yesterday and marched across the city, calling for justice for woods and other

people killed by police. the fbi pulled several items from a san bernardino lake as they search for evidence connected to last week's shooting rampage. they have not said what they removed from the lake yesterday. they are looking for a computer hard drive belonging to the attackers. police believe they threw it in the lake after killing 14 people and just before being killed in a shootout with officers. a bay area muslim community will hold a prayer vigil today for the victims of the san bernardino shooting. the muslim community will hold that vigil in bay point. the community said it's condemns the shootings and sends condolences to the victims' families and friends. it starts at 6:00 tonight at the bay point mosque. investigators believe a fire at a mosque in riverside county was intentionally set. a person of interest was located and detained. members of the mosque said someone fire-bombed the building around noon yesterday. nobody was hurt, but flames did damage the front lobby of the

mosque. the fbi plans to assist local police in investigating what happened. gun sales in california have reached a record high this year. sales spiked on black friday and the days following the san bernardino attack. there have been more than 1.5 million federal background checks because of firearm purchases this year. that broke the previous record of 1.47 million set last year. and this month usually draws more gun sales for holiday gifts and getting ahead of any new gun restrictions the new year may bring. happening today, the san francisco community group is using thousands of dollars they raised for a gun buy-back. united players is hosting the event today at the south of market clubhouse. people will get $100 for a handgun and $200 for an assault weapon. more than 900 guns have been turned in in buy-backs since

in san francisco since 2011. the buy-back starts at 8:00 this morning at 1038 howard street. also happening, join news reporter lyanne melendez as she mc's a san francisco rally for gun prevention violence. ing jackie speier and senator mark leno will speak at the rally. the event starts at noon and ends at 2:00 at the united nations plaza in san francisco. 6:07, the time. today the streets of san francisco will be filled with jolly old elves. santacon is in 200 cities now but it actually started here 21 years ago. a great party for some people but a nightmare for others. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana has more on the city-wide party. >> reporter: at sip and sew near poke street, special edition santa hat will be on sale for revelers. >> it's a great way to start the holiday season. >> she's well aware of the crowd descending on the city. >> you will not be able to cross the street without being inundated with 3,000 to 5,000 santas. >> poke street is already decorated for the season and it

>> new details on historic action to help slow down climate change. representatives from 195 nations have reached an ambitious agreement in paris. scientists warn of dire consequences without the deal, which aims to limit global warming to below 2 degrees celsius or 3.6 degrees fahrenheit. the final draft is about 20 pages long. seven pages shorter than a previous draft, suggesting that competing options had been deleted. this morning a martinez man is in jail after agents of the california department of alcoholic beverage control seized more than 40 illegal and unregistered firearms from his home. yesterday a state agent seized the guns and rocket launchers, along with two stills from a

concord business where he is accused of brewing illegal rum and whiskey. it's been several months in the making. >> the agents sealed more than 60 illegal and unregistered firearms from this home. >> this is out of the norm. >> abc agents conducted an undercover investigation beginning in concord after receiving a complaint the 53-year-old man was making and selling rum and whiskey illegally. neighbors of the concord business say they saw agents move in. >> a lot of commotion. >> they seized 2 illegal stills along with more than 200 gallons of illegally still spirits and inlegally produced wine. agents arrested albert. abc said illegal stills are potentially explosive. >> they shouldn't be very atheable neighbors. >> at his home they recovered illegal firearms. along with gun silencers and

launchers. the officials now have the peps. >> our agents are just trying to answer the questions why were all these weapons there? >> unbelievable. i just can't fathom that. >> carol is his neighborhood. >> i'm very surprised. he's been a good neighbor. there are young people that live there. >> albert is facing felony charges for possessing a still along with illegal, unregistered firearms and he's facing misdemeanor charges for selling alcohol without a license. abc says he did have that license for a different winery in concord. in concord, melanie woodrow, abc7 news. >> campbell police wanted to find out if the same sexual predator targeted two girls and woman. all three crimes took place near eden avenue and west rosemary lane.

a woman also reported a man exposing a man while he sat inside his truck. one crime took place last month and the other two were this month. >> a driver survived this huge piece of metal that flew through his bmw's windshield. this picture was tweeted from the seen along saratoga avenue. the driver escaped with just a scratch. he was alone inside the s.u.v. it appears the piece of metal threw off a truck at around 2:00 yesterday afternoon. christmas came early for hundreds of stanford university hopefuls. the school sent acceptance letters to more than 700 high school students who applied under the early admission program. nearly 8,000 applied in the first rounds, which is the most in stanford's history. the students come from 48 states and 34 countries. more than 80% hold a 4.0 or higher gpa. more than 35,000 additional high schoolers are expected to apply by january 3rd. happening today, drivers in the east bay should expect road closers and track delays because

of the walnut creek half-marathon. it starts on civic way and north broadway. thousands of runners are expected to hit the streets, and the race is in its fifth year. it will affect traffic in the area and the neighborhoods that feed directly to the area. as we have the weather check, thank goodness the rain is holding off for the runners today. >> that's right. it's been known to happen. and probably for events tomorrow as well. people have to deal with the wet weather, the slick roadways and the gusty winds and mountain snow as well. it's all coming. but this morning it's cold out there. 12 truckee. 17 at the airport and 30s around the bay, up in the north bay and by the delta. a look at live doppler 7hd. we will stay dry for the bulk of the day. except if you live in the far north bay you could be looking

at some scattered showers as early as tonight. from san francisco we are in the 40s. one of the warmer locations. 43 in san jose. it's 42 in morgan hill. half moon bay, hi there, 352 degrees for you. and those surf conditions are treacherous out there still. we still have a high surf warning. so 4:00 this morning. it's 41 in novato and 37 in river -- in livermore. we will continue to do that until we get to the 8:00 hour. napa chilling out at 38 degrees. the sun coming up after 7:00. already looking a little light out there. partly cloudy to clear this morning. clouds on the increase today. but you will see some of that sunshine. we will still stay rather seasonal. looking at a stormy day tomorrow. rainy and windy in the morning. here are the waves right now. they were more intense yesterday. they slowly will subside. but from monterey up through

sonoma, still very dangerous westerly swell. storm impact scale tomorrow, a moderate one on the way with wet and windy conditions for sunday. wind gusts potentially from 35 do 40 miles an hour. so 1:00 to the we have filtered sunshine. some rain from ukiah to cloverdale. then by 5:00 maybe some scattered showers for you up to the far north bay. but by 9:00, 10:00, you still can see them and they become more likely throughout the overnight hours. 4:00 in the morning monday, not much going on. but as we go through the 5:00, 6:00 hour, it's light rain. 7:00, 8:00 it's in the north bail, and 1:00 in the east bay and south bay with the heaviest rain and exits by the early afternoon. so rainfall will be anywhere from a half-inch or better up to an inch in the north bay, with about a half ininch from san carlos to san francisco. and on the coast with one-third in and around san jose. the winds, check it out.

more than 130,000 women are registered to vote, compared to more than 1 million men. 5,000 men and nearly 1 through -- nearly 1 million are runs as candidates for council seats. because of saudi arabia's jenner regulargation rules, men and women are casting ballots at separate polling stations. republican candidate donald trump is telling his rivals he's going to win. this was the scene last night as he addressed a crowd in des moines, iowa. members of the party are wrestling with the idea as trump with their nominee. the washington posts reports that party leaders held a strategy session on how they might stop trump. here's his response to that. >> honestly, it's not going to matter. they can't do anything. i don't care about the establishment. >> a new national poll shows the majority of americans oppose trump's proposed ban on muslims coming into the united states but among republican voters 42% support it. abc news reporter jonathan carle explains what it means for the republican party. >> donald trump has a warning for republican leaders who want to stop the trump juggernaut. >> they say, folks, i'm sorry i did this to you, but you have to get used to it. it's one of those little problems in life. >> trump rises in the poll. there are signs of chaos in the

republican party and now a new battle brewing between senator ted cruz and the front runner. until now cruz has avoided attacking trump but he was caught on a tape obtained by the new york times in a closed-door meeting questioning whether trump and ben carson have the judgment to be commander in chief. cruz said he's avoided attacking them because he wants their voters and doesn't want to be attacked by trump. >> my approach, much to the frustration of the media, has been to bear hug both of them and smother them with love. >> trump responded tweeting looks like ted cruz is getting ready to attack. i'm leading by so much he must. i hope so. he will fall like the others. cruz tried to walk it back tweeting the establishment's only hope, trump and me in a cage match. sorry to disappoint. donald trump is terrific. #dealwithit. the washington post reported

abc7 news reporter alyssa harrington found out this is not the first time something like this has happened there before. >> pictures kind of came off the wall. it felt kind of like a small rolling earthquake. >> new dad tony wagner said his family is lucky to be alive. a huge eucalyptus tree toppled would over into their apartment in the middle of the night. it came inches from his bedroom window where he was asleep with his wife and new baby girl. this shows part of the roof crushed. this is the second tree to fall on the building in the past few months. >> with el nino coming, we've let the property management, as well as the city of oakland know that this is a hazard. >> but wagner and his neighbors say the city has been slow to respond. >> there was supposed to be an arborist out here to do something and nothing has happened. >> just last week a teenager was killed when a tree branch snapped near lake merritt. two years ago a windstorm

that's why. 47 san francisco, 42 oakland. good morning mountain view. 41 here and 52 half moon bay. be careful if you are headed to the coast. still the high surf warning is in effect until 4:00 this afternoon. 38 napa. 39 in novato. look at fairfield, 34 degrees. even livermore has dipped into the 30s while concord sitting at 40 degrees. we will look for a dry day today for most of you. but as the clouds increase we could see a shower in the north bay. but primarily tomorrow is whether we are going to get the stormy condition was the rain and wind on the way for the morning in the north bay. so these waves continue to decrease but, boy, were they huge yesterday and they continue to be very, very dangerous today. so if you are headed towards the coast, maybe think twice, don't go or keep a save distance. really dangerous out there. we talked about a moderate storm on the way with some downpours possibly with some wind gusts to 40 miles an hour.

this all begins this time tomorrow. but today you are looking at the cloudy skies. you can kind of see a shower by 1:00. by 5:00 a few showers slipping into santa rosa. if you are headed out tonight you may get your head wet if you are in the north bay of marin county. but through the overnight hours the rain becomes light and continues to overspread the entire bay area. by about 7:00 tomorrow heavy rain north of santa rosa. by about 9:00 it's in marin county. out toward vallejo and looks like san francisco getting in on the act, as well as oakland. by 10:00 tomorrow morning into emeryville and fremont. san mateo and san carlos. by 11:00 it's the south bay, cupertino and sunnyvale and still raining by 12:00 in the south bay. how much rain? about three quarter inch in the north bay to about a half-inch in napa and maybe half-inch in hayward and a third for mountain view or a little better than that in santa clara. wind gusts 31 miles an hour 7:00 tomorrow, and it doesn't stop there. in fact the winds continue to

increase with the passage of the cold front and behind it. it's going to be very cool and breezy with that cold air settling in. winter storm warning for the west slopes of the sierra. winter weather advisory through 10:00. this is just getting going tomorrow because we can see 25 inches in kirkwood by 4:00 monday morning. 57 san francisco, 60 oakland, at san jose. and the accuweather seven-day forecast shows the rainy and windy day tomorrow, partly cloudy, maybe a leftover sprinkle on monday. dry but chilly tuesday, wednesday and thursday. >> if you have plans to head to the syria, probably today is the better day to go up there. >> i suspect. >> and not deal with the snow on the roads. >> absolutely. it's going to be busy. >> lisa, thank you. second graders at one oakland school aren't allowing el nino rains to wreak havoc at their nearby canyon. they have been involved in a habitat restoration project, and that's one reason they received a good sum of money from a prominent environmental agency. lyanne melendez explains.

>> take a beautiful canyon like beacon's field in oakland, add some second graders from joaquin miller elementary, and you have the makings of a great restoration project. >> we pulled eight bags of invasive plants. this will help keep the creek healthy. >> improving and maintaining the creek is also one of their duties. all through this canyon there are habitat restoration projects like this one. what the kids have done is something that could actually help protect the area during el nino. >> we've been taking out invasive species and playing games to learn more about them. >> they replaced the invasive plant with native ones. >> being at the top of the watershed you need the plants to kind of stabilize the areas because with the rains that are coming with el nino, a lot of the areas will be washing through and you need the plants. >> the national oceanic and atmospheric administration was so impressed that the agency awarded them more than $6,000 to be shared with three other east
