live from the kgo-tv broadcast center. this is abc 7 news. no nation, not even one as powerful as ours, can solve this challenge alone. >> a global commitment. nearly every country agrees to lower greenhouse gas emissions in the first-ever climate deal of this magnitude. hello there, we begin with that major developing story out of paris. governments today adopted a global agreement that for the first time asks all countries to reduce or rein in their greenhouse gas emissions. it includes a commitment to keep the rise in global temperatures "well below 3.6 degrees." it calls on developed nations to

give $100 billion annually to developing countries to help foster their greener economies. abc 7 news reporter cornell bernard is live in san francisco with reaction to all of this. >> reporter: many say there is no denying this is the turning point for the bay area and the planet. yes, there are some skeptics out there. but at least one east bay mayor says what happened today, pretty historic. >> together we've shown what's possible when the world stands as one. >> reporter: praise from president obama about a turning point for the world's climate. a historic commitment from nearly every country to lower greenhouse gas emissions and help stave off the drastic effects of climate change. >> the world has come together around an agreement that will empower us to chart a new path for our planet, a smart and responsible path. >> reporter: delegates from 195 nations agreeing to shift away from carbon-based fuels in the future. >> you could just feel the momentum. the unified belief of every

leader. >> reporter: oakland mayor libby schaaf attended the summit in paris, representing a city that's already ahead of the curve when it comes to green innovation. >> paris just shows that the rest of the world has recognized this is an urgent problem. we need to act now. >> skeptics said these actions would kill jobs. >> reporter: instead the president predicts a new frontier of job growth. >> this agreement sends a powerful signal that the world is firmly committed to a low-carbon future. and that has the potential to unleash investment and innovation in clean energy at a scale we have never seen before. >> reporter: but some folk wet found aren't convinced. >>. >> i am skeptical of how much action is going to take place. just because there's so much money wrapped up in everything and so much big business. >> reporter: but a step forward in acknowledging that climate change isn't the stuff of science fiction anymore. in san francisco, cornell bernard, abc 7 news.

a western diplomat tells the associated press the u.s. actually held up paris climate talks for nearly two hours over one word in the draft agreement. the diplomat says the u.s. wanted the word "shall" changed to "should" in a clause on emission targets. why? over fears the word "shall" would force the administration to seek approval from the republican-controlled senate. we'll switch to weather in our area. we are ready for another round of rain here. we're seeing dangerous rip currents that are pounding the coast. abc 7 news at four point in san francisco where big waves slammed the shoreline. we're seeing waves up to 17 feet from sonoma county to monterey. >> this is incredible. you've got waves, you've got -- the only thing that's missing are the body surfers. >> our high-surf warning runs through 10:00 tonight. north and southbound lanes of highway 1 blocked because of

flooding. rising water in the russian river else due water from the last days of rain and high surf with waves as high as 25 feet, it's flooded the low-lying areas of jenner. >> we'll go out with an excavator and open the river mouths to prevent flooding of jenner. at this time with the heavy surf we attempted to breach on tuesday. we weren't able to do it because of the high surf conditions. and we've been monitoring this site ever since. >> the agency hopes to get the heavy equipment out and open the russian river mouth as soon as it can. live look at conditions for you now outside from our emeryville camera. the next wave of rain is heading into the bay area. abc 7 meteorologist tracking live doppler 7 hd. looking at something that's going to happen tomorrow morning? >> yes. so tonight we really have the clouds overhead. a live look showing you overcast skies. saturday night planner, the next six hours we'll have a lot of clouds upstairs. overcast skies by 9:00.

with the clouds upstairs it's going to keep temperatures on the mild side for december numbers in the 50s. live doppler 7 hd tracking this cold front, pushing into parts of oregon, northern california, and it will march to the south and east overnight tonight and bring us our next storm. so when too expect this front where you live in the north bay between 5:00 and 8:00 tomorrow morning between 8:00 and 10:00 in san francisco, oakland, concord, fremont, san jose in the south bay after 10:00 tomorrow morning. we'll talk about what to expect when this front moves through with the accuweather forecast in a few minutes. one person died after a driver slammed into a stalled car in fremont. it happened around 2:00 a.m. on northbound 880 near the auto mall parkway exit. chp says the car was stalled in the far left lane when another car slammed into the back of it. investigators still don't know if the man who died was inside the stalled vehicle or outside of it prior to the accident. a suspicious package left on the sidewalk brought out the bomb squad in san francisco this

afternoon. abc 7 news was at the embarcadero and harrison as police closed down three blocks to all traffic for about an hour. the bomb squad checked it out. police say they didn't find anything harmful. new details tonight on that incredible story of a huge metal beam that fell off a truck. it pierced through this bmw's wind shield and the driver's seat. remarkably the driver survived with barely a scratch. it happened yesterday on i-280 near saratoga avenue in san jose. firefighters tweeted that photo from the scene. >> our first impressions were it wasn't going to be pretty. he pretty much pulled up his sleeve and showed a very, very, very minor abrasion on his right arm and we couldn't believe what we saw. we thought it was going to be a lot worse. and sometimes you get lucky and today this guy was very lucky. >> the captain guessed the driver's reaction time had to be less than two seconds and adds,

maybe he should buy that lotto ticket. a hospital in san jose is staffing questions due to possible exposure to tuberculos tuberculosis. yesterday a nurse tested positive for tuberculosis. 350 infants and their mothers may have been exposed. although doctors are saying there is a low chance the nurse passed it on to anyone else. the nurse works in the mother and infant care center. the hospital's now reaching out to those in the newborn nursery who had contact with the infected nurse between mid-august and mid-november. new details in a pistol-whip attack on a nanny in aren detuesday. the contra costa county sheriff's office says the district attorney filed charges against 18-year-old armani miller. those charges include robbery, carjacking, kidnapping. the oakland man is accused of kicking in the front door of a home, taking cash and electronics, hitting the nanny with his gun before driving away in the family's porsche. miller's bail set at $1.3 million.

give up the guns for cash. no questions asked. abc 7 news was in san francisco today for the community group gun buyback event. the group united players has a mission to silence the violence. it's hosted that event since 1994 with help from sfpd and other community groups offering $100 for handguns, $200 for assault rifles, through donations. >> it's important to have events like this to get guns off the street. most of the guns that are used in crimes is guns that were stolen. we want people to get them out of their house so guns can't be stolen from their homes and used in crimes. >> united players collected 260 guns today, 12 of which were assault rifles. you may spot a sea of red and white tonight in san francisco. santa-con is back. this annual tradition in the city some say has gotten a little out of control. i'll show you how some bars are keeping these saint nicks out. also on abc 7 news at 5:00,

uber has a new request of its drivers. don't join class action suits against the ride sharing company. uber is requiring drivers to seen a new legal agreement. the company issued it two days after a judge expanded a california class action suit against uber. the lawsuit is a push for the company to define its drivers as employees instead of as contractors.

uber says the new agreement will only apply to drivers who began drive for it after friday. an airbnb battle, a landlord said tenants chopped up the apartment into too many pieces. he rented a three-bedroom apartment to tenants for $2,500 a month. they decided to renovate the apartment into 10 bedrooms and rent them out on airbnb for $35 a night. >> this is the worst thing happened to me in my life. >> eddie shoe, the landlord who tore down the renovations, changed the locks, and kicked out the tenants. only the tenants sued. a judge ordered the landlord to let them back into the apartment. the two are still renting out the rooms to tourists, now using curtains as room dividers. a spokesperson for airbnb says that the company says situations like these are rare and it strongly opposes illegal hotels. right now a santa invasion is taking over san francisco. the 21st annual santa-con well

under way. abc 7 news was at san francisco's union square as santa-con participants kicked off the event by donating today to the san francisco firefighters toy drive. from here large groups of santas venture out on mostly random bar stops. when we last tracked santa-con about 300 of these people were stopped along polk street. a few restaurants including original joe's here in san francisco have hired security to keep them out. they say the whole thing has become just too unruly. ahead, a different sort of santa surprise in the south bay. st. nick goes tie heck ditching the sled. what makes this visit so special. calm conditions right now. before our next winter storm. our meteorologist will let us know how long it's going to take around. take a live look at the gold

benicia. san ramon. san mateo. all the bay area. this is abc 7 news. a little girl in new york who lost her entire family to fire is now getting her simple christmas wish granted. her name is sapphire terry. she received 18,000 holiday cards and letters and 400 packages. she made a wish on facebook to fill her spiral card tree with christmas cards. sapphire suffered serious injuries in a house fire two years ago that killed her whole family. the postal carrier says they're likely going to need a tractor-trailer to deliver sapphire's mail next week. if you want to add to that collection, we have the address on our website. abc7.com. it is an early christmas for bay area children fighting cancer. abc 7 news was in san jose where the police department turned its air hangar into the north pole for the cops care cancer foundation's annual christmas fantasy flight event. st. nick opted for a chopper

instead of a sleigh to bring gifts to 45 bay area kids battling the disease. bay area officers and firefighters help hand out gifts to those kids' siblings and donated items to their families who are in need this holiday. talk now about a major change in the weather that's going to be happening overnight into tomorrow morning. we're going to get rain again. >> we are. the weekend started out on a quiet note. now we're watching rain beginning to move in after midnight. right now live doppler 7 hd shows clouds. the wider picture tracking downpours and even snow working into oregon and northern california. and this front moves in after midnight tonight. but we've had a rather active pattern recently and it's churning up ocean waters. we still have a high surf warning in effect until 10:00 tonight. you can see current wave heights as high as 17 feet. they could get as high as 20 feet. that means dangerous rip currents along the coast. current temperature-wise, overcast skies and a south wind that is keeping us on the mind side in the 50s right now.

55 in oakland. 56 in san jose. the same in san francisco. napa right now sitting at 53 degrees. so numbers not going to fall too far from the current readings rye now. so overnight tonight ahead of that front we'll drop into the mid 40s and lower 50s across the bay area. in our storm impact scale for sunday, a 2. moderate storm, wet and windy the first half of sunday. downpours, possible lightning. the bigger threat is the wind. gusts near 50 miles per hour. so future weather shows you 6:00 on your sunday. we're dealing with light rain showers ahead of the front. the front gets its act together first in the north bay by 8:00. heavy downpours, possible lightning. it moves over san francisco, oakland, vallejo, berkeley, half moon bay, san leandro by 9:00. by 11:00 a quick-moving front. much of the activity is south bay by 11:00. into the afternoon behind that front we taper to isolated showers. in terms of rainfall, we're expecting widespread .5 inches.

downpour setup, it's not out of the question a few locations could get close to 1 inch of rainfall. with the downpours we have some very active winds. future tracker wind gust shows you by 9:00 that front is moving through in the morning. winds close to 50 miles per hour in many spots. behind that front the winds stay breezy between 30 and 35 miles per hour. we have a wind advisory in effect starting in the north bay now at 6:00. it does include the bay shoreline, the east bay hills, the peninsula and santa cruz mountains starting at 8:00 a.m. these winds have the potential to bring down trees and also power lines on sunday. along with the rain we have snow. winter storm warning 4:00 a.m. into the sierra, up to 2 feet of new snow. overnight tonight we have those lows in the upper 40s to low 50s. tomorrow afternoon it is wet and it's windy, upper 50s for much of the bay area. accuweather seven-day forecast shows you tomorrow, a 2 on our storm impact scale. windy, wet. afternoon sunshine on monday. behind this front it is cold on
