killed by gilroy police has been identified. police say alvarez fought with the woman. when police arrived to break it up, they say alvarez charged at an officer. a four-year veteran of the force. police haven't said whether he was armed with a weapon. abc 7 news reporter chris wynn will have a live report coming up. a police chase ended tragically. this morning's chase began in oakley when drivers tried to pull someone over for a stop sign. >> investigators began a search

for the driver, made an arrest. the person had some minor injuries that appear to be the result of being in a collision. >> a fire broke out. the district attorney is investigating the case and the crash. >> more animal cruelty charges against a man who went on a three-month cat-killing spree. >> the prosecutor says that robert farmer began snatching cats through october. he was supposed to enter a plea here at the san jose courthouse. but the prosecutors surprised everyone by telling the judge that she had added more charges. that she had found more cats victimized. the bail was upped to 125, $000.

>> public health officials are giving the all-clear. abc 7 news reporter is live in martinez. >> alma, level two means that there's an incident with smoke blowing in the nearby community. the public health department warning was lifted after about two hours, but that was two too many according to a local man. >> i thought it was a fire or something. >> saw the smoke as he was driving between his home and business. both in martinez. he wasn't surprised. and he wasn't happy. >> we're looking to move away from here. to be right next to these things, if we don't have to, we'd rather not. >> a refinery spokeswoman says it lost its primary regeneration unit which basically means it lost power.

the threat that caused closure of every universe is believed to be a hoax. receiving an e-mail threat from orr seas warning of an attack with assault woeps and explosives. >> i, as superintendent am not going to take the chance with the life of a student. >> new york city schools received the same threat but decided not to cancel classes.

congressman adams shift the ranking democrat only the house intelligence committee labeled the threat a hoax to disrupt schools in large cities. coming up, when to close and when to stay open. the clues that led to different decisions on the east and west coast. leigh anne is live with the reaction and the response. >> well, this is what happened very early this morning. police departments here locally started to reach out to their school districts. for example, the office of emergency services reached out to all the schools in san mateo. all of these districts decided that this threat was not credible. now, all of these school districts trying to justify l.a.'s decision.

>> we increased presence in and around our schools in san francisco. >> most schools have a school resource officer. with the threat in los angeles, those officers in san francisco were given priority status. >> if anybody does call the police from a school or any type of campus, we would have a top priority response. >> there was never a threat of violence to schools in san francisco. still, it was a chance to review their safety plans. >> all of our principals were reminded of procedures. >> you take every threat seriously. >> oakland unified has its own police force. the dheef is a veteran of the san francisco and la police departments. he believes the san bernardino's shootings helped the decision to close.

crisp and 1u7bny tomorrow. tomorrow morning you can expect similar readings to this morning. 31 in santa rosa, 33 concord, fairfield. don't be surprised if you see some patchy frostz there. 43 oakland, 40 in half-moon bay. make sure you bundle up before you get going. it is going to be cold enough south of the bay area for a three-point tomorrow. overnight lows, low to upper 20s: all right. it's not going to be as cold thursday morning. here's why. a lot more cloud cover coming in and the possibility of a few showers up in the north bay or sprinkles ahead of the next storm system that comes in, really, on friday.

where does that storm stand? it's a one. wettest spots could see up to half an inch of rain. we're missing the wind with that system. by friday afternoon, it starts to move in. evening commute does look messy. by evening, we will see snoe out of it with the snow levels starting out pretty high initially and then dropping down on saturday. here in the bay area, rainfall will range from a third to half an inch. tomorrow afternoon, high clouds to the north, they'll stream the sun. everywhere else, sunny skies. it is going to be a cool one. 56 san jose, concord, san mateo, san francisco and half-moon bay.
