good thursday morning to you. thank you for joining us. the city of baltimore is on edge following a mistrial in the first freddie gray case. >> the two protesters were arrested overnight. people taking to the streets after the announcement, the jury deadlocked unable to find officer william porter guilty or innocent. >> porter is one of the officers charged following gray's death while in police custody. we get the details now from abc's bazi kanani. >> no justice. >> no peace. >> reporter: a new round of protests in baltimore, deputies forming a line around the courthouse after a judge declares a mistrial in the case of the first police officer tried in the death of freddie gray. >> i'll just leave the legal process. this is about saving black lives. >> reporter: jurors told the judge they were deadlocked but he ordered them to continue

deliberations yesterday. they still could make no progress toward a verdict on any of the four charges against officer william porter for the death of 25-year-old gray. gray died after suffering a severe spinal injury in police custody back in april. his death sparking weeks of violent protests. prosecutors say porter refused to put his seat belt on gray when he was transported in the back of this police van and ignored gray's repeated requests for medical help. >> i hope that we do get a conviction somewhere because freddie is dead, and someone needs to be convicted. >> reporter: whether prosecutors will force porter to take the stand again in a retrial is not yet known. some legal analysts speculate porter might be given immunity for his testimony against the five other officers who are also facing charges and whose cases could be affected by the prosecution's failure in this first attempt. in the meantime, baltimore leaders and gray's family are urging a peaceful response. >> we ask the public to remain calm, patient because we are

confident there will be another trial with a different jury. >> reporter: bazi kanani, abc news, washington. another explosive police shooting case is moving forward in chicago. officer jason van dyke has now been formally indicted on six counts of first degree murder and one count of official misconduct in the fatal shooting of black teenager laquan mcdonald. van dyke is free on bail and scheduled to return to court friday where he's expected to plead not guilty. well, now the race for president, donald trump making some frank comments overnight on abc's "jimmy kimmel live." >> yeah, trump admitted that by attacking his rivals on the campaign trail he's been and i'm quoting him, a little bit divisive. >> he also says he hopes the republican party can come together. donald trump back on the late night circuit with jimmy kimmel and wasting no time criticizing u.s. policy in the middle east saying $5 trillion could have been better spent. >> and we could have spent $5 trillion on rebuilding our roads, our schools, our

hospitals, our infrastructure, our airports. >> kimmel's sidekick guillermo rodriguez came to the u.s. illegally from mexico but went through the legalization process. kimmel used his case to question trump about his immigration policy. >> what i'm saying is they have to come in through a legal process and they're going to come in and we want to have that door. you know, we talk about the wall. going to build a wall but we're going to have a big, beautiful door. we want people to come in. we want people to come in legally. >> reporter: later kimmel read from the recently released note from trump's doctor. it claims he's in excellent health and said if he wins the white house, trump will be the healthiest individual ever elected to the presidency. >> how do you get a doctor to write -- >> i said, doc, i'll be the healthiest president ever. he agreed and probably took my words and put them down. he's a great deer. >> this is a picture of your doctor. what kind of a doctor is this? wow?

>> earlier trump made a campaign stop in arizona waving to the crowd from the cockpit of his private jet. in an exclusive interview with abc news, trump once again pledged his allegiance to the gop. >> i'm sorry. who gets to interview him on the plane for abc? i want that gig. another e-mail embarrassment for the obama administration. the pentagon confirms that defense secretary ash carter used a personal e-mail account for government business. carter says he realizes it was a mistake. it happened during his first months in office earlier this year, and "the new york times" reports it ended after the white house intervened. well, there are new details about the san bernardino couple who killed 14 people two weeks ago. fbi director james comey says that before syed farook and tashfeen malik met in person, they communicated online using private messages, not social media, to discuss their shared interest in violent jihad. >> those communications are direct private messages. so far in this investigation we have found no evidence of posting on social media by

either of them at that period of time and thereafter reflecting their commitment to jihad or to martyrdom. >> investigators have also found no evidence that the couple was part of a larger terror cell or was being directed by terrorists overseas. in the meantime, president obama is planning to visit san bernardino on friday. he'll hold a private meeting with shooting victims and the families of those killed before continuing on to hawaii for his family holiday vacation. that snowstorm that's dumped more than two feet of snow in the higher elevations of the rockies has now moved to the upper midwest. the snowplows were out in force in parts of minnesota yesterday as the snow piled up on the roads making driving in some areas treacherous. and as you can see, the latest radar shows that storm system marching eastward blanketing nearly the entire eastern third of the u.s. bringing more snow today to the upper midwest and rain in the southeast. more than an inch of rain fell yesterday in less than an hour over parts of georgia.

>> wow, that's quite a mark there, huh? well, the federal reserve is raising interest rates for the first time in almost ten years. wall street cheered and most overseas markets this morning are moving up too, but that's not all that changed. abc's rebecca jarvis will look at the impact. >> reporter: the federal reserve is hiking interest rates from 0% to 0.25%. so, what exactly does this mean for you? everything from your credit cards to new car loans or mortgages will be a little more expensive. the increase should be gradual. still, for new mortgages small changes can actually have a big impact. on a $200,000 house, a fixed rate mortgage at 4% will cost you $955 a month. but if the rate rises just 0.25%, that payment rises to $984 costing you $11,000 more over the life of the 30-year loan. car loans also getting pricier, but the very first thing you'll

beer pong, they worry being a son of millionaires he could have fled to anywhere in the world. elsewhere in texas a passenger dispute forced the cancellation of a flight inbound from amsterdam out of houston. an elderly passenger alerted a flight attendant of suspicious behavior by two men who appeared to be middle eastern. all the passengers were ordered off the plane. the two men and two people they were traveling with were released when police determined they were not a threat. a christian college has suspended a political science professor for the way that she expressed solidarity with muslims. larycia hawkins, a christian, wore a head scarf on campus and declared her solidarity with muslims. administrators took issue with her posting saying there are fundamental differences between islam and christianity. some dramatic dash cam video is surfacing out of nebraska this morning. watch as a sheriff's deputy zooms ahead of this tractor trailer, pulls over in the left-hand lane and dashes across two lanes of traffic into that moving truck. because the driver was suffering

a seizure, paramedics arrived a short time later. police say thankfully the driver is okay. >> it's got a sort of action movie quality to it. researchers at stony brook university have smacked down a celebrated johns hopkins university paper released earlier this year that attributed most cancers and to genetics and bad luck. the new study in the journal "nature" says up to 90% of cancers, 90% of cancers are most likely the fault of a patient's own lifestyle. i didn't know it would be that high and poor environment including smoking, drinking and, of course, eating bad food. 90%. >> that's pretty significant. >> fascinating. so i want to get on to my favorite athlete. >> oh, you love her. >> i love her so much. we're talking about american soccer legend abby wambach. after last night's match against china in new orleans wambach hung up her cleats for good. the 35-year-old left the field to thunderous applause.
