. >> it's saturday, december 19th. thanks so much for waking up with us. i'm chris ngyen. some parts of the bay area are seeing slick roads. let's send it to meteorologist lisa argen with a first look at live doppler hd. hi, lisa. >> you are right. in particular, the east bay this morning. leftover showers in the north bay. another line of showers hitting the peninsula. but we've had some light to moderate rain over into oakland and berkeley through piedmont and that's exactly where we are looking at highway 13 and 24. out toward the east bay valleys. take it easy there. you are into the wet weather. fog through almeda, san leandro, just about to move westward.

the san mateo bridge and 280, wood side, montero. look at this line of showers just offshore. it will be pushing into santa cruz. it will be a cool day today. the skies will become pick. notice in the south bay not a lot happening here. we will look for the temperatures to be just in the 50s with the northwest wind. if you are headed out to do some shopping, it should be fine throughout the afternoon. but early morning showers, 40s and 50s by noontime. just a stray shower. mid-50s throughout the day a stronger system tomorrow and higher rainfall totals. i'll have that coming up. chris. >> lisa; is that, thank you. yesterday pouring rain pelt the the bay bridge which made for dangerous driving conditions. abc7 news reporter alan wang showed us how the storm impacted some last minute holiday shoppers and retailers. >> retailers in the north bay say everything was going well

until the storm moved in. >> it started dying when the rain came. if started around 4:00, i think. >> the christmas shopping spirit took an immediate dive as rush shower traffic seemingly ignored the retailers. open-air shops at the village at cord madera and the town center deserted. >> we will not get the customers. >> retailers needed more hard-core shoppers like jen. >> got to get out. have to do what you have to do. doesn't matter what the weather is. >> but she was one of the few. last minute christmas tree shopping also came to a halt at the shopping center. but john saw the rain as an opportunity. >> we thought it would be a good time to sneak out and get something done, you know. so that's it. and it's worked out great. >> last minute christmas shoppers are expected to come out this weekend but there's more rain in the forecast. and retailers are hoping they will get their christmas spirit on and brave the elements. in the north bay, alan wang.

to undergo sensitivity training. the police department is now asking the city to allow officers to also be armed with tasers. oakland police are on the lookout for a man who kidnapped a woman, robbed her and then tried to sexually assault her. they released sur are availablens video showing the attacker. this happened early thursday just after midnight on piedmont avenue. the man put a metal object into her back and walked her into a secluded area. she fought back kicking and screaming. the attacker ran off with her stolen items. >> a former youth pastor at hercules church is accused of molesting children. he's accused of molesting two girls who were part of his bible study class. lopez was arrested this week at his home. he also vol tired as a football coach at a high school. detectives believe there may be other victims. authorities are trying to identify the driver of a pickup that was killed in a fiery crash on the railroad tracks in south san francisco. it happened just around 3:00

yesterday afternoon near the south city caltrain station. witnesses say the truck was seen speeding and driving erratically along nearby highway 101 moments before the accident. investigators say they will need dna or dental records identify the remains. new controversy between the two leading drats running for president. a software glitch allowed four members of the bernie sanders campaign to download confidential files about hillary clinton's voter base. sanders respond by firing one of those staffers, but it did not end there. the democratic national committee shut the sanders campaign out of its database. that prompted sanders to file a lawsuit accusing the dnc of siding with clinton. late last night party officials and the sanders campaign reached an agreement to restore access to that database. tonight christine pelosi, daughter of congresswoman nancy pelosi will host a democratic

forecast. cleanup is halfway done after the valley fire ripped through three counties. the last flames were extinguished nearly three months ago. according to the press, crews have cleared more than 1200 homes they have access to. they average 20 to 25 property cleanups per day, but officials say the recent rainy weather does not help because when the unpaved roads are wet it's difficult to move the heavy equipment where it's needed. new numbers show california's unemployment rate is slightly dropping. in november the new jobless rate went down to 5.7%. it's lower in almeda county where it's currently 4.4%. in san francisco the jobless rate is 3.4% and santa clara county just added the highest number of jobs in 25 years. janet has more. >> your eyes are not deceiving you. yes, there is more traffics congestion in the south bay because the economy is the best it's been since the dot-com boom. an explosive number of jobs were

added just last month. >> it's the highest on record going back to 1990 so that's pretty exciting. >> labor market specialist janet shriver. >> it points to a full recovery. she said the tech industries prosperity is the driving force for growth in all other industries. from october to november, 5200 jobs were added and san jose metro area now leads the state in job growth. job seekers notice the difference. >> it's definitely better. >> lisa was recently laid off but she's bouncing back much more quickly than when she lost her job during the recession. >> several people contacted me recently regarding opportunities. >> she was one of the few people at the employment development department responding to recruiters and feeling optimistic. in san jose, abc7 news.

>> as a way to ease the cost of housing, facebook is offering their employees $10,000 to move closer to the office. to get the one-time bonus, they have to buy or rent a play -- a place within ten miles of the head converts. for families with kids the bonus can be as much as $15,000. many live in san francisco and take shuttles down to the office. it's not unusual for the russian river to flood, pushing water into the streets of guerneville. it usually causes little damage. however, this is an el nino season when the weather can suddenly move to the extreme. we look back to 1986 when a blast of rain caused guerneville's biggest flood ever. >> reporter: this is the russian river on its best behavior, so calm and serene, just what the people in guerneville love about it. but the old-timers know better. >> there's a lot of people of that moved into this town since 1986 and they don't have a clue. >> it was like you were almost like breathing water. it was so incredibly dense. the water just never stopped coming from the sky and it was so loud it was deafening.

>> believe it. >> over sunday night into monday morning it came up 10 feet in about 8 hours. >> this was guerneville after two feet of rain fell in ten days, swelling the russian river to grotesque proportions. 48.8 feet. how high is that? see the old bridge? the water came all the way up to the walkway. locals still call this the great valentine's flood but there was no romance, not when water consumed the community and caused $40 million damage. river road lived up to its name. cars looked more like boats. the local deli, like ad wade-three restaurant. and water flowed so fast, residents clung to a rope. >> they said it wasn't going to flood and my house is now under water and everything i own.

>> there was no way out for more than 1,000 people except by national guard helicopter. for those who did remain behind, the red cross shelters moved to higher ground three different times. >> don't be so gullible, get prepared for things next time. >> to a degree, they have. now when guerneville floods, water rarely reaches the built-up homes. lesson learned. abc7 news >> 6:17 is our time. lisa, drivers not only dealing with the rain out there, but also fog. >> yeah. the good thing about this rainy event we have had breaks and they haven't been strong systems. rainfall is nearly where it should be this time of year but we've had the breaks and the rain light. tomorrow's system stronger. you see the yellows to san leandro, and light rain pushing back westward toward pescadero. and heavy downpour around the

airport. watch out danville, you can see wet weather as well as san ramon, and highway 24. further south you talk about hayward. union city about to get yet. south of the dumbarton bridge, redwood city and 280 and you will see menlo mark getting wet. westward the showers are sitting offshore. and then this band of rain showers will get the santa cruz mountains wet and perhaps a few light showers into santa cruz. back into the north bay looking at 580, very light rain. sierra nevada it's snowing with a winter weather advisory through noontime. a winter weather advisory for the west saleps into the evening hours. it extends throughout yosemite for 10:00 in the evening hours. the advisory in purple and warning in pink. a couple of inches. up to 14 inches on the west slopes. if you are shopping today, we

stormtroopers joined the press secretary for a little fun before the press conference. the characters were there as part of a special screening of the star words-the force awakens for military families who lost loved ones. and holiday clear in martinez yesterday. abc news was at the contra costa animal shelter as they gave bags of treats and toys. they raised $200,000 at their stores to help out rescues and animal groups to the bay area. some of the chp's best and brightest recruits are now proud graduates. the training was rough. k9 cadets made their debut in sacramento yesterday. after 11 weeks of training they say their new partners can multi-task and definitely take a bite out of crime. >> she's a duel purpose k9. duel purpose narcotics and patrol. she can help us apprehend

>> this is abc7 news. >> it's 6:30 on your saturday morning. thanks for joining us. the roads are wet throughout much of the bay area. let's check in with meteorologist lisa argen. she's tracking the conditions where you live. >> we have fog and a narrow band of showers from the east bay back to about the bridge and the coastal area. heading through danville, between 680 and 580 you have showers. they blasted through the oakland airport earlier and down through newark looking at wet weather. back through palo alto. wood side and the valley and menlo park light shower activity. this area through the santa cruz mountains getting wet and looking at more shower activity just in and around the salinas

new this morning, president obama and the first lady met the families of the 14 san bernardino shooting victims. the two stopped in southern california before heading to hawaii for the holidays. inside a high school library sat 14 families at separate tables. the obama's went to each table and talked to each family. they could not have been more insistent that something good comes out of this tragedy. >> we have to remind ourselves of the to overwhelming good that exists out there. >> and if you met some of these folks, despite the pain and heart aches they are feeling, they could not have been more inspiring. >> the obamas boarded air force 1 just after 11:00 last night. the meetings lasted nearly three hours, more than an hour and twenty minutes longer that than scheduled. >> today is super saturday. the saturday before christmas is expected to be the second busiest shopping day of the year for brick and mortgager stores. last year it trumped black

in the mission will host their annual toy drive. this year officers collected hundreds of toys and games to distribute to children. santa will be at the station to greet the kids. this event starts at 9:00 this morning at the mission station on valencia. >> yesterday low-income families got the unique opportunity to pick out donated toys for their children. this process creates excitement for families in need. >> and i know what my daughter likes. i just don't have to be given stuff that's maybe not in her interest so it's nice to come and pick things out for her. >> nearly 1300 families were able to pick out toys at the salvation army warehouse. 120 families also received bigger gifts like washers and dryers and even car repairs. >> at least 300 families in berkeley will receive toys today from the police department but the toys for tots program almost didn't happen this year. the police chief reached out to the community through a gofundme campaign and the bay area came through big. more than $11,000 was raised in just two days, smashing the goal of $5,000. starting today, the sacred heart community service in san jose will hold it's an

have a great day, everyone. >> is fog a still issue? >> yes. heading to fremont and along the peninsula. what you see now is this system will exit throughout the next couple of hours. a little bit of shower activity in the north bay, but mainly we will see it here between 580 and 680 from san ramon and southward through danville and dublin. this is the lighter activity north through concord and walnut creek. you see berkeley and miranda a little mist and drizzle. for our friends in fremont and north of union city a shower pushing through. it will be quickly out of your way but southwest ward back through palo alto and los altos hills looking at wet whether into mountain view. and from pescadero through santa cruz in the next 15 to 20 minutes looking at the wet weather. you will see some of that in the south bay throughout the next hour or so. but in the mountains we have a winter storm warning throughout

the next couple hours and a wintry mixer weather advisory with the temperatures right around freezing. until noontime with the winter weather advisory and through the southern sierra all day long. you will need the chains. it's going to be extra slow in the mountains today and another stronger system. it's a warmer one that heads our way tomorrow. so if you are planning on heading out today to do some holiday shopping, numbers will be in the 50s. the rain should be over about 9:00. noontime a little more sunshine but still cool. and clear and chilly by 9:00. today would be a good day to get out and good things done. about by midday tomorrow we will be wet again. 48 mountain view and los altos. looking at half-mile visibility from fairfield. and the rain with you and a mile up in petaluma. as you look outside in san francisco, we are looking at the clouds here. and more rain is to come tomorrow. so the bulk of the day today will be be dry after the few

showers pass by. then by christmas eve into christmas day looks like a wetter, windier and stronger system. so later on today partly cloudy. fast forwarding through 10:00 tomorrow morning where cloverdale, clear lake and santa rosa will be wet. it will take until the early afternoon hours until we see it push southward. 2:00 still some heavier rain. santa rosa, cloverdale a few light showers. vallejo into the east bay and the raiders game and the niners game will likely get wet throughout the day. 4:00 you are still dry for the most part around pleasanton and fremont. castro valley looking at showers and by 8:00 we are soggy all across the bay area. takes us right on through your saturday night. rainfall totals anywhere about a tenth to .2 from the delta to hayward. .5 novato. half moon bay maybe a half-inch of rain. so for today look for drying conditions, some sunshine. cool, just 50s. the rain exiting the east bay
