live from the kgo broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. it is saturday, december 19th. thanks for waking up with us, i'm chris wynn. some parts of the bay area are seeing slick roads this morning. let's send it over to lisa argen. >> good morning to you. showers in the east bay, south bay and peninsula. and these will continue to press to the south and east and move out of the area, and bring us a drier afternoon. but on 280 right now, around san mateo, san carlos, it's wet and this will continue to slide to the south and east. in the south bay, just south of san jose, around eden veil, and also down through hamilton, wet weather for you, and over around

dublin, pleasanton, 580 towards livermore it's wet. the fog is really causing a problem. less an a quarter mile visibility from santa rosa. just better than two miles in livermore and at the coast. later on today the ceilings will lift slowly. it's going to take the next several hours and partly to mostly cloudy conditions. cool in the mid 50s. straightly stronger system heads our way midday tomorrow. >> the rain has certainly been enough to keep some people inside. but during yesterday's afternoon commute, pouring rain pelted the bay bridge, which made for dangerous driving conditions. abc 7 news reporter allen wong shows us how the storm impacted some last minute holiday shoppers and retailers. >> retailers in the north bay say everything was going well on the friday before christmas, until the storm rolled in. >> it's pretty much starts dying when the rain came. i think it's like around 4:00. >> reporter: the christmas shopping spirit took an immediate dive as rush hour traffic seemingly ignored the

retailers. open-air shops at the village at quarter madeira and the town center were deserted. >> we think today busy, but did not light up. >> reporter: retailers needed more hard-core shoppers like jen. >> you gotta do what you gotta do. >> reporter: so it was important for you to get out? >> got to get out. doesn't matter what the weather is. >> reporter: but she was one of the few. last-minute christmas tree shopping also came to a halt at the bon air shopping center. but john harden saw the rain as an opportunity. >> we thought it would be a good time to sneak out and get something done. you know, so that's it. and it's worked out great. >> reporter: last-minute christmas shoppers are expected to come out this weekend. but there's more rain in the forecast and retailers are hoping they'll get their christmas spirit on, and brave the elements. in the north bay, alan wong, abc 7 news. >> heavy rain spoiled labs for the first-ever outdoor hockey game in west sacramento last night. nearly two inches of water

accumulated on the ice, turning parts of it into slush. the game has been postponed until 4:30 this afternoon. the game featuring the two ahl teams as part of a six-week event dubbed the biggest show on snow. when you get unusual weather where you live take a photo or video and share with us using #abc7now. that will help us find your content so we can usely use it on-air or online at abc7news.com. a magnitude 3.1 earthquake hit the east bay last night. residents in san ramon felt the shaking just after 12-30. this is the same area where a string of earthquakes hit in october to early november. the largest one registered at 3.6. a silver alert has been canceled in the south bay. the chp says a 76-year-old of san jose had been missing since noon yesterday but was found safe this morning.

8:03 is our time. san francisco's district attorney met face-to-face with protesters demanding justice for mario woods. the man who was fatally shot by police. yesterday, district attorney told the crowd that he hears their frustrations and demands. protesters want the mayor to fire police chief greg is your. they blame him for the death of woods who was shot at least 15 times by officers in the bay view district earlier this month. >> we are conducting a fully independent investigation. it will be transparent. the conclusion of the investigation and whatever rationale we come up with will be made public. >> the demonstrators want police to undergo sensitivity training. the police department is now asking the city to allow officers to also be armed with tasers. oakland police are on the lookout for a man who kidnapped a woman, robbed her and tried to sexually assault her. they released surveillance photos showing the attacker. it happened early thursday just after midnight on piedmont avenue.

police said the man put a metal object into her back and walked her into a secluded area. however, she fought back, kicking and screaming. the attacker ran off with her stolen items. a former youth pastor is accused of molesting children. 34-year-old gabriel lopez is accused of molesting two girls who were a part of his bible study class at the valley bible church student ministry. lopez was arrested this week at his home. he also volunteered as a football coach. detectives believe there may be other victims. authorities are trying to identify the driver of a pickup that was killed in a fiery crash on the railroad tracks in south san francisco. it happened at around 3:00 yesterday afternoon near the south city cal tran station. witnesses say the truck was seen speeding and driving erratically along near bihighway 101 moments before the accident. investigators say they will need dna or dental records to identify the remains. there's a new controversy between the two leading democrats running for president.

a software glitch allowed four members of the bernie sanders campaign to download confidential files about hillary clinton's voter base. sanders responded by firing one of those staffers. but it did not end there. the democratic national committee shut the sanders campaign out of its database. that prompted sanders to file a lawsuit accusing the dnc of siding with clinton. but late last night party officials and the sadrers campaign reached an agreement to restore access to that database. tonight, christine pelosi, daughter of congresswoman nancy pelosi will host a democratic debate watch party in san francisco. she supports hillary clinton. fellow clinton supporters will be on hand to show others how they can volunteer to help her clinch the nomination. doors open at 5:00 p.m. at crossroads cafe and delancey street off the embarcadero. you can watch the debate live in new hampshire right here on abc 7 starting at 5:00 p.m. abc news anchor david muir and martha raddatz are moderating. star wars fans not only

packed theaters yesterday but got a taste of the force. thousands battled with light sabers in several cities, includes los angeles and san francisco. abc 7 news reporter sergio quintana has more on this galactic free for all. ♪ >> reporter: not very long ago, in a galaxy not far away at all, hundreds of jedi braved the rain to experience the force and try to set a record. >> you try to break the record for the biggest lightsaber battle. >> reporter: this san francisco battle is one of several across the country. and of course, a "star wars" event would not be complete without costumes. however, he donned his jedi master robe for the second day in a row. >> me and my friends like decided to dress up like for the movie yesterday. >> reporter: some here were a little worried about the night. it was the first time in battle. have you been practicing with the lightcybers? >> absolutely, no. and i'm kind of scared. >> reporter: as if on cue the clouds parted over the park on

the embarcadero and at 8:00 the forces of good and evil lit their sabers and went at it. >> even in all this rain, everybody is just here. one big "star wars" family. >> reporter: it was a free for all with duels unfolding everywhere. the colors of the sabers painted the night sky red, blue and green. children even battled adults. there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of rules and anyone can be a target. there were probably only two rules that everyone seemed to follow. have fun, and if you saw the movie already, no sharing spoilers. in san francisco, sergio quintona, abc 7 news. >> "star wars: the force awakens" could set a new opening weekend record for ticket sales. abc 7's parent company disney which owns the "star wars" series is estimating ticket sales of at least $215 million. the film earned $57 million thursday night alone. tickets are still available. bay area theaters have added

good morning, everyone. happening today it's supersaturday. the saturday before christmas is expected to be the second busiest shopping day of the year for brick and mortar stores. last year super saturday trumped black friday with more than $9 billion sold. kohl's is opening for 170 straight hours until 6:00 p.m. on christmas eve to squeeze every last dollar before christmas. online sales are booming. what about the brick and mortar stores and shopping malls. here's laura anthony with more.

>> reporter: more americans are doing their holiday shopping online. but does that mean brick and mortar is dead? not necessarily according to sun valley mall where sales are up despite foot traffic that's a tad down. >> traffic is steady. it's been a holiday season we're up in volume. everything is going very well. people are still coming to the mall. >> reporter: according to the latest survey, store sales are up this year by about 2%. but online sales have surged more than 4.5%. >> i did 80% to 90% online. >> reporter: this couple told us they're only in the mall for a couple of reasons. >> i think some things you just need to buy in person. >> and you can't see santa online. >> you cannot. >> christmas is getting a little dressed up, and going out, and seeing friends and shopping, and seeing what's new and what's new for the holidays. >> reporter: and there are those who will bypass the more impersonal online experience for the one a shopper gets in a

store. where there's so much to see and touch. >> you can touch it and feel it, see it. ask about it. and get it gift wrapped. >> reporter: according to the national retail foundation, 90% of shoppers still have at least one more gift to buy. and chances are, they'll do it in a store. in concord, laura anthony, abc 7 news. cleanup is halfway done after the valley fire ripped through three north bay counties. the last flames of the valley fire were extinguished nearly two months ago. cal recycle says crews have cleared 680 of the more than 1200 homes they have access to. they average 20 to 25 property cleanups per day. but officials say the recent rainy weather does not help because when the unpaved roads are wet it's difficult to move the heavy equipment where it's needed. it's not unusual for the russian river to flood. it usually causes little damage. however this is an el nino

season when the weather can suddenly move to the extreme. abc 7 news reporter wayne freedman looks back to 1986 when a blast of rain caused gurnville's biggest flood ever. >> reporter: this is the russian river on its best behavior. just what people in gurnville love about it. but the old timers know better. >> there's a lot of people who moved into this town since 1986 and they don't have a clue. >> it was like you were almost like breathing water. it was so incredibly dense the water just never stopped coming from the sky. and it was so loud, it was deafening. >> reporter: believe it. >> over sunday night into monday morning it came up ten feet in about eight hours. >> reporter: this was gurnville after two feet of rain fell in ten days. swelling the russian river to grotesque proportions. 48.8 feet. that is still a record here in gurnville. how high is 48.8 feet? you see the old bridge over there? the water came all the way to the walkway. locals still call this the great

valentine's flood but there is no romance here. not when water consumed this community and caused $40 million damage. river roads lived up to its name. cars looked more like boats. the local delicatessen like a wade thru restaurant. and here's the center of town. water flowed so fast that to cross residents clung to a rope. >> nobody told us nothing. they just said, it wasn't going to flood bad and my house is like now under water and everything i known, you know. >> there was no way out for more than 1,000 people except by national guard helicopters. for those who did remain behind the red cross shelters moved to higher ground, three different times. >> don't be so gullible, get prepared for things next time. >> reporter: to a degree, they have. now when gurnville floods waters rarely reach the built-up homes. lesson learned.

wayne freedman, abc 7 news. dealing with some fog earlier this morning. has it lifted yet? >> no. still pretty foggy and we have rain on the peninsula. right around sand hill road a pretty good downpour between redwood city and further south, just west of palo alto. so, yeah, be careful if you're headed in this direction. because these showers are quick moving, we've got some damp pavement, and also showers winding down in the south bay right now. so hamilton, it's soggy, it's foggy, and we do have showers north of morgan hill, and santa cruz, so you could still see some pockets of light rain throughout the next couple of hours. lighter showers towards livermore, and danville, 580 for you, and you can see just a little piece of moisture here, south of oakland, perhaps hayward looking at some mist and drizzle. but we do have a winter weather advisory until noontime with the heaviest snow right now on the west slopes. the south lake winter weather advisory and winter storm warning throughout the day.

that's in pink where we're looking at anyfrom accumulations of 5 to 10 inches, two to five inches around south lake. it's been snowing since yesterday and we're going to see more snow tomorrow. it's going to be a warmer system, though, so higher snow levels, and then the one for christmas eve looks to be colder. less than a quarter of a mile for santa rosa. just two miles half moon bay and livermore. if you're not experiencing the light rain, mist or drizzle it is certainly foggy out there and we will be looking at slowly improving conditions. just to get you in the holiday spirit this is a look at lake tahoe this is the bay area forecast for where today we're looking at increasing sunshine by noontime throughout the afternoon, low to mid 50s, so great to get out and do some shopping. you won't need the umbrella after about 10:00. and then we'll be clear and cold tonight, with our next system slated to move in in the late morning hours in the north bay. explore for yum camera, still the great sky with 50 half moon bay and from emeryville, showers earlier, still maybe a few areas

of mist and drizzle. 45 in santa rosa the rain has stopped for you, 48 in livermore and the clearing here from the golden gate bridge with the scattered showers ending in the feex few hours. more rain tomorrow and another storm system christmas eve. here's the picture today. partly to mostly cloudy skies. fast forwarding through 10:0011:00 with the rain stays in the north bay. right through that noontime. then 1:00, 2:00, slips into the east bay, the peninsula, the afternoon, the raider game and looks like in santa clara it will be increasingly wet from 4:00, 5:00, 6:00 towards 8:00, 9:00 hour. so with this slower moving system, weological get most of the activity in the north bay. so rainfall anywhere from a half inch to three quarters of an inch, santa rose and the coast while south bay and east bay don't share as well, 0.1 to maybe 0.2. 55 in fallow alta the accu weather seven-day forecast our warmer system tomorrow and then we're looking at some rain

a power outage that lasted more than half a day left a san jose woman with a refrigerator filled with spoiled food. here's michael finney with why she was determined to do more than just cry over spilled milk. >> corie opened her refrigerator. that's how much food was in there on september 11th, when an outage left her without power for 14 hours. >> the cheese was all melted together because it got so warm. cottage cheese that got gross. milk, some bad lettuce. everything smelt bad. everything was warm, and moldy. >> reporter: under pg&e rules, customers can file claims for food spoilage caused for any outage of more than two hours. the utility denied the claim. in its rejection letter pg&e wrote the cause of the electrical problem was due to

the cable company digging in our lines and damaging our facility. that company is cablecom, which doesn't provide cable service but lays down the underground lines needed for telecommunications. it, too, denied the claim. saying pg&e didn't label its lines properly. it wrote -- pg&e has failed to accurately provide markings for their system that has resulted in the system incurring damage. >> it felt kind of childish. it was really back and forth. i couldn't believe that a major company was operating in such a childish way. >> reporter: pga&e eventually sent corie a check for half the claim, $80. on the condition she end the whole matter with the utility. but corie refused to accept the settlement. instead she turned to 7 on your side and we contacted pg&e. it agreed to pay the entire claim. it told us, when we learned of this dissatisfaction we provided a full reimbursement. we apologize. >> we finally made progress.

brightest recruits are now proud graduates and the training was rough. k-9 cadets made their debut in sacramento yesterday after 11 weeks of training officers say their new partners can multitask and definitely take a bite out of crime. >> see the dual purpose k-9, meaning narcotics and patrol. so the patrol side she can help us apprehend suspects, and from the narcotics side she can sniff different narcotics. >> k-9 teams are required to complete eight hours of training each week. we have much more ahead on the abc 7 saturday morning news. president obama meets with the families of the san bernardino shooting victims. how the president says they inspire him. the democrats will be battling it out tonight right here in the saint anthem campus. i'll have that story coming up.

live from the kgo tv broadcast center this is abc 7 news. >> it's great to have you with us. i'm chris nguyen. we're starting with a quick look at the forecast. lisa, good morning. >> chris, good morning to you. we're starting on the peninsula from palo alto up in the hills. and down through 280. looking pretty soggy there. also through the north, over the dunn barton bridge, it is wet. hayward you have early morning showers.

livermore and 580 it's been particularly wet for you around mount diablo and mount hamilton. showers ending here in the south bay. so we are still looking at some more showers in to santa cruz, and also mon to ray. but with the fog, boy, it's going to take you some time to get around and notice in the sierra nevada, still snow. a winter storm warning and a winter weather advisory throughout the day looking at a half mile to a mile and a half from santa rosa to fairfield. two miles petaluma. so leaving you with this picture here where temperatures are in the 50s, the skies will begin to break up later on today. and we'll look for the 40s to translate into mid 50s by midday. chris? >> lisa, thank you. happening today, presidential hopefuls will take center stage in the abc news democratic debate. abc news reports joins us live from new hampshire. what can we expect tonight? >> chris, we can expect this room is going to be filled to capacity with campaigners, analyst, journalists, and we can also expect a lot of drama. even though hillary clinton has

a commanding lead in national polls, we know that the election can be won or lost right here. heading into tonight's debate hillary clinton is 31 points ahead of rival bernie sanders in the latest abc news/"washington post" poll. clinton tops the national poll at 59%, sanders at 28%, and martin o'malley with just over 5% voter support. it's worth remembering at this point in 2007 clinton had a similar lead over then-senator barack obama. and here in new hampshire, sanders actually has a slight advantage, 48% to 46%. >> if bernie sanders is going to beat hillary clinton it has to start right here in new hampshire. >> look look for these issues to be front and center. first, guns. >> it's time for us to say, we're going to get comprehensive background checks. >> sanders supporting additional background checks but he's also had a record that limits gun control measures. second the campaign data breach.

a standard campaign staffers of age to access clinton's confidential voter database after a firewall lapse. the now fired staffer said he did nothing inappropriate. >> if i thought i was doing it wrong i would have tried to hide it. >> and finally look for sanders to play up his role as an outsid outsider. in this election, outsiders are king. >> bernie sanders may be one of the most unique outsiders of all time. he's been in congress for a quarter of a century but he's never been associated with either of the parties. again, the democratic debate is tonight in new hampshire. abc news anchor david muir and martha raddatz are moderating. you can watch it live right here on abc 7 starting at 5:00 p.m. new this morning, president obama and the first lady met the families of the 14 shooting victims in san bernardino. the two stopped in southern california before heading to hawaii for the holidays. inside a high school library sat 14 families at separate tables.

the obamas went to each table and talked with each family. he says they could not have been more insistent that something good comes out of this tragedy. >> we have to remind ourselves of the overwhelming good that exists out there. and if you met some of these folks, despite the pain and the heartache that they're feeling, they could not have been more inspired. >> the obamas boarded air force one just after 11:00 last night. the meetings lasted nearly three hours. more than an hour and 20 minutes longer than scheduled. new numbers show california's unemployment rate is dropping slightly. in november, the state's jobless rate went down to 5.7%. it's even lower in alameda county where it's currently 4.4%. in san francisco, the jobless rate is 3.4%. and santa clara county just added the highest number of jobs in 25 years. abc's janet o has more. >> reporter: your eyes are not deceiving you. yes, there is more traffic

congestion in the south bay, because the economy is the best it's been since the dotcom boom. an explosive number of jobs were added just last month. >> the highest on record going back to 1990. so that's pretty exciting. >> reporter: labor market specialist janice schreiber. >> it points to a full recovery from even the dot bomb in 2003 when we sank lower than anybody else in terms of our jobs. >> reporter: she says the tech industry's prosperity is the driving force for growth in all other industry for manufacturing, to professional and business services. from october to november, 5200 jobs were added. and san jose metro area now leads the state in job growth. job seekers notice a difference. >> it's definitely better. >> reporter: lisa was recently laid off, but she's bounding back much more quickly than when she lost her job during the recession. >> several people have contacted me recently regarding opportunities. >> reporter: she was one of a few people at the employment development department

responding to recruiters, and feeling optimistic. in san jose, janet o, abc 7 news. as a way to ease the cost of housing, facebook is offering its employees $10,000 to move closer to the office. to get the one-time bonus workers have to buy or rent a place within ten miles of the menlo park headquarters. for families with kids the bonus can be as much as $15,000. many employees at facebook and other silicon valley companies live in san francisco and shuttles down to the office. the glide memorial church will give away thousands of toys for the holiday season. this is the 31st year. families can start lining up at 9:00 this morning. and in san francisco, the police station in the mission district will host its annual toy drive. this year officers collected hundreds of toys and games to distribute to children. santa will be at the station to greet the kids, this event starts at 9:00 this morning at the mission station in valencia. at least 300 families in berkeley will receive toys today

from the police department. but the toys for tots program almost didn't happen this year. the police chief reached out to the communities through a go fund me campaign. the bay area came through. nor than $11,000 was raised in two days smashing the goal of $5,000. starting today, the sacred heart community service in san jose will begin its annual holiday food distribution. more than 3,000 low income families will receive food boxes today through monday. and next week more than 6,000 children will get toys, books and bikes all thanks to a generous community. still ahead on the abc 7 saturday morning news, how warriors forward harrison barnes plans to make the holidays much her remember for 20 bay area kids. but first a live look outside from our explore for yum camera. weather wise a cool start to our saturday. lisa argen will have the full forecast in just a few minutes.

anthony foundation is starting its annual curbside drive. the drive runs through christmas eve. volunteers are still collecting food and clothes as well as hats and scarves to give to people who stop by this holiday season. the drive starts at 9:00 this morning. golden state warrior harrison barnes is hosting a holiday shopping spree today for 20 kydds from the oakland boys and girls club. barnes will take them to the adidas store at the westfield shopping sent on market street. they'll shop for new clothes and shoes courtesy of adidas. this is the fourth year barnes will host holidays with harrison for underserved youth in the bay area. should be pretty nice out there in terms of no rain later today. >> that's right. you've been paying attention. >> i try to do my best. >> check it out. this is pretty fog left over, even some mist. sunshine will break through those clouds today. we have a brief respite before we get more rain tomorrow. i'll detail that for you coming up. >> thanks, lisa. also ahead the warriors try to

area, of the east bay the further north east bay we're looking at livermore and highway 24 has been pretty wet. things are drying out around the bay while the winter weather advisory lasts until noontime and the winter storm warning through 4:00. you head down the sign of the sierra and we still have snow in yosemite, four to eight inches through 10:00 tonight. so the advisory until noontime. any way you look at it, chains are going to be required. the warning throughout the 4:00 hour and we picked up a half a foot with more to come. so, that's the good news. small increments and we'll continue to see a small system tomorrow, a stronger system by christmas eve. fog an issue from petaluma to santa rosa. livermore's been a little bit better. the delta be very careful out there. mountain view and san jose not bad. if you're headed out to do some saturday shopping, we will have a mixture of clouds and sun, it will be a cool day in the 50s, with a northwest wind, but the rain will be ending within the

next hour or two. it will be clear and cool tonight, and another vantage point for you from our exploratorium camera, where things are pretty quiet. we've had temperatures from the upper 40s to near 50. not a whole lot of rain out there. and another system headed our way tomorrow it will be a weak one but it's going to take some time in getting here. really focusing on the coast and the north bay. 46 by the delta, as well as novato, 45 in santa rosa, 49 in livermore, sunshine from the golden gate bridge your rain has ended. partly cloudy. the next system should be a one on a storm impact scale tomorrow and then the next system looking like a number two for christmas eve, perhaps into christmas day. so the rest of the day here we are, 10:00 this hour, wind down through the south bay, and the east bay, they exit the area. and we'll be left with partly cloudy skies, picking this up 9:00, 10:00 tomorrow. the rain stays in the north bay from clover dale to santa rosa. but by noontime some of it slipping into the east bay, the peninsula, and the rest of the afternoon is wet from 3:00 to

4:00 through san francisco, and oakland, down through redwood city. san jose, the niners, it will be a wet second half of the game, most likely. and right into the 10:00, time frame notice we're still looking at the wet weather around hayward and free month. so rain fall amounts from the north bay to the peninsula, and hayward could get about a half inch. but lesser amounts through mountain view san jose. this is just a gauge, some areas could see more or less and then as for today we're breaking out into more sunshine, a cool day today, mainly in the mid 50s. throughout the day, and then that system tomorrow, it will be a pretty weak one but yet this is all adding up to about average rain fall for december. and then even more rain it's weak, it's scattered showery type on monday, tuesday, wednesday could be the only dry day but then the stronger colder system, impacting christmas eve and perhaps christmas day. so we haven't had anything huge, which is good. but it's all adding up and helping us out, of course.
