>> good morning, everyone, i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, december 20th. we are looking at the first of two storms over the next two days moving into the bay area. this is a live look from our san rafael camera. you can see there dry right now, but lisa argen is going to take a quick look at the weather to tell us when all of this is coming in. good morning, lisa. let's start with you. >> hi, carolyn. good morning to you. this is the last day of few. tomorrow begins winter. it will feel like it. a stronger, wetter system tomorrow and wetter today. this is the -- this is a 1 on the to storm impact scale. the rain has sown started in the north bay. it's been very, very light. so as we go in closer you will notice all the green.

doesn't mean it's raining everywhere. it's been very, very light but it's been raining from mount skate helena to santa rosa. this morning very, very cold because we had clear skies all night long. in the sierra nevada the system will be cold and allow for the winter weather advisory to be extended through tuesday. but the one tomorrow is going to be warm and yet. san francisco throughout the day today getting rainy by about 112:00. look what happens, it increases in intensity and it lasts through the 5:00 hour. if you have plans in the city, the south bay, anywhere into the east bay, the raiders game, it will be wet. temperatures still in the upper 30s in morgan hill. that's what i mean with the cold, cold start. cold rain is on the way. i'll tell you how much and talk about tomorrow's system and also one perhaps on christmas eve. carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. when you get unusual weather where you live, take a foe stow or video and share it with us using the #abc7now. that will help us find your content and use it on the error

at abc7news.com. breaking news out of the east bay. the bartley bart station is closed due to a medical emergency. delays are affecting passengers headed toward fremont, richmond and daly city. stay with abc7 news for updates on this story and follow us on twitter at abc7 news bay area >> developing news out of kern county this morning. the faa and the ntsb will be on site of a single engine plane crash that happened last night. officials don't know if the plane is the same one reported missing from read hill airport yesterday afternoon. that plane was headed to the henderson executive airport near las vegas. a neighbor describes what he heard when the plane went down near bakersfield. >> an extremely faint thump, nothing else. i was actually expecting something loud.

since i heard a very faint thump, i thought nothing happened. for some reason in my mind, i'm thinking fate. it was just really weird. >> the kern county sheriff's office said they don't know how many were on board but there's no indication of any survivors. more news out of kenya where the officials say the suspicious device was a false alarm. the item was found in the plane as bathroom and it appeared to be made of cardboard, papers and what looks like a kitchen timer. the air france flight made an emergency landing ago a passenger alerted the crew of the device. bomb experts retrieved it and examined it. all of the passengers and crewmembers were safely evacuated and taken to a hotel. officials say six passengers have been questioned about that device. if you watched the presidential debate, you saw

hillary clinton and her closest rival, bernie sanders, duke it out in new hampshire. following the opening statements, the candidates got to the issues on many americans' minds, including the economy, gun control and terrorism. >> i think it's absolutely the wrong policy for us to be even be imagining that we are going to end up putting tens of thousands of americans troops into syria and iraq to fight isis. >> and the candidates shared a united message saying last night's debate is the kind they need to take to the republicans. the democrats will share the stage again for the next debate january 17th in south carolina. bernie sanders apologized to hillary clinton for his campaign's data breach of her voter information, but clinton had an apology of her own last night. [applause] >> sorry. >> it was one of the top talked-about moments on social media last night.

after a commercial break clinton was missing from the stage. then returned late in the middle of a question. another moment came during clinton's closing speech. >> thank you. good night, and may the force be with you. >> the former secretary of state's reference to the new movie "star wars - the force awakens" was the top moment on twitter during the debate. abc7 news sergio quintano has reaction from a watch party in san francisco. the evening started with the potlines explosive situation pitting the clinton campaign against the sanders camp over the data breach. >> we want to address the controversy. >> abc news anchor quickly asked about the breach. sanders apologized to secretary hillary clinton. and to his supporters. >> this is not the type of campaign that we run. and if i find anybody else involved in this, they will also be fired. >> sanders suspended two more staffers.

even with this issue, debate watchers described the candidates as congenial. >> especially with what happened the last 48 to 72 hours. the database debacle. >> this party was organized by clinton supporters but included sanders fans. >> i think all three candidates are very strong, but i don't think bernie sanders. >> and mike o'malley also got props. >> all these things are more connected to the people than they are, i would say, the republican candidates. >> this debate veered from questions about syria to helping grow the united states economy to defeating isis, but the debate took a sharp turn when candidates were asked about heroin addiction. >> i have laid out a five-point plan about what we can do together. >> the event host said that was especially meaningful for this venue. >> to hear presidential candidates address drug

addiction at a rehab centeter fr recovering drug addicts was special. >> this was the last debate of the year for both parties. the first primary of the year is february 9th in new hampshire. in the newsroom, i'm sergio quintano, abc7 news. with the republican presidential candidates were out campaigning yesterday all over the nation. donald trump in cedar rapids, iowa, ted cruz in mobile, alabama, and marco rubio campaigned in anderson, south carolina. >> in vallejo church leaders say today's church service where toys are given out to the community will still tapes, and that was after two people were injured when their car crashed into the church on sacramento street last night. witnesses say the car was speeding when it slammed into the building. >> i see a car halfway into our

children's department and that's heartbreaking because it's in our children's department. it hit both classrooms. >> church leaders say they hope to rebuild quickly. a 22-year-old man is dead after a car hit him last night in the south it happened around 6:40 on south king road and waverly avenue in east san jose. police say he got off a bus and ran behind it on to the street when a black bmw hit him. paramedics rushed hip to the hospital where he died a few hours later. police are now asking any witnesses to contact them immediately. an elderly san jose woman is dead after getting lost on her way home from the store friday afternoon. she died after being hit by not one, but two cars early yesterday morning. police are looking for one of those drivers this morning. abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian has more from san jose. this is one of her favorite

photos with her mother. it was taken last christmas. she gave san jose police the same photo to make this missing person's flyer when her 76-year-old mother disappeared. her mother walked to the walgreens to pick up a prescription and never returned home. her daughter spoke with me through a translator. >> drive around, tried looking for her. they couldn't find her. >> they would never have thought to look nearly 4 miles away on center road. that's where she was at around 3:00 a.m. a driver crashed into her. when he stopped to help, another driver slammed into her too. >> sorry about that, we are looking now or just recently at the storms that are making for some great skiing in tahoe. we have video from northstar california resort. skiers enjoyed four inches of

she will be along shortly with her accuweather forecast. >> now to the east bay where police in berkeley are calling a plan's death inside a fraternity house suspicious. officers found the man unresponsive in the fraternity house around 7:30 yesterday morning. they tried to resuscitate him but were not successful. >> we've been talking with witnesses and we've been talking to members of the fraternity, examining evidence at the scene to figure out exactly what happened. >> police say the man was in his early 20s. autopsy results are pending. >> in palo alto, this man, anthony ray price, is in the santa clara county jail for attempted auto burglary and several misdemeanor charges. police say a private security officer detained him as he was trying to break into a car earlier last week. investigators say price was under the influence of drugs at the time.

>> one person was found dead after an s.u.v. plunged into the waters of the oakland estuary yesterday morning. rescuers searched for more possible victims. they did not locate anyone. the initial call reported maybe three people trapped in the vehicle. the s.u.v. sunk about feet. divers pulled out the body of a man believed to be the driver. shortly after that crash, a man working nearby ran over. he dove in to help, but did not have any luck. >> i jumped into the water. tried to get down in there, but the moment i go under water, it becomes completely black. i can't even see my hands. i looked a little bit. i couldn't even find the car. well, egg made it out of the water just fine as almeda fire arrived on scene. some of your christmas cards may be slightly delayed after a

car flipped on its side in san francisco. that driver of the big rig crashed yesterday morning and the truck overturned on to the cesar chavez street off-ramp to 101. thousands of letters spilled out on to the road. the chp said the driver was speeding. >> the driver was fine. he did say he believed he might have fallen asleep, doesn't remember overturning, so he was transported to the hospital for precautionary reasons. no boxes or packages were on the truck. dozens of postal workers raced to pick up the dumped mail and load it into other trucks to be delivered. this weekend bay area retailers have expanded their hours. abc7 news was in san francisco's union square where shoppers came out for yesterday's super saturday. it's expected to be the second busiest shopping day this holiday season. >> it's busy. ladies are inside and men are wandering outside so hopefully they aren't spending too much money. >> i have been shopping mostly

online burks then i have to go touch and feel. >> i haven't even started. >> oh. >> we will do it all today, i think. >> i hope so. the national retail federation said 90% of people are still shopping for the perfect presents at the best prices. >> thank you so much. >> don't worry. >> it's not often police officers see tiers of joy from people they pull over, but it's happening every day now in napa. this is video provided to abc7 news by our napa valley. an anonymous donor gave the police department $5,000 to hand out to people in need. 50 people will get an envelope with $100 in cash until all the money is gone. the donor wants to give back to the community and give police the opportunity to spread some positive holiday cheer. >> they were watching the news and told me they really wanted to do something that put law enforcement in a positive light, as well as gave the officers an

opportunity to have really positive interaction with community members. police say the generous gift has sparked interest from other people in the community who also want to donate and give back. good deal! happening today, nearly 200 bikes will be given to children in need this christmas as part of the san francisco's firefighters annual toy drive. the toy headquarters in the city will be decked-out in a winter wonderland theme as kids receive their new bikes. every year the firefighters union distributes more than 200,000 toys to more than 40,000 children. this is the union's 66th year for this toy drive. wow, that is a lot of gifts. way to go firefighters. >> lisa, i must say it's starting to feel like christmas because it's colder today than yesterday, at least at this time >> yeah, morgan hill still in the 30s.

absolutely right. we were hovering around freezing in livermore, the north bay and even the peninsula and san jose got into the 30s. the cloud cover increased and live doppler hd showing you we have rain from santa rosa to vacaville and fairfield. not all of this is reaching the ground but the darker shading right in here, some very light rain. and it's been raining for the past hour or so in santa rosa. we go in closer and you can see the returns are painting much of the east bay green. but it's going to take time until we see the rain there. but it will pick up from the 11:00, 12:00 hour, and everyone gets wet today. in the here they have it's a snowmaker with the winter weather advisory through tuesday. but the thing is we have another system on the heels of this, and that one is much, much warmer. it's going to be raining in the sear tuesday with the first system. we have the winter weather advisory from 10:00 today to

10:00 tuesday. good news is few feet about 7,000 feet but below that 4 to 8 inches with primarily the snow happening with this system. but higher elevations will do well. 39 in morgan hill, 50 half moon bay, 47 in oakland. it's cold out there. sfo no delays yet but probably. look be at temperatures staying in a narrow range for a little while until the south winds get going. so it's cool. 43 novato, 47 concord and a little rainy here from mt. tam. morning bike ride, the dog walk. yeah, it's going to be wet and chilly out there. rain increases today, more rain tomorrow. and the impact scale today is a 1, tomorrow a 2. heavy rain, stronger winds and more in terms of a total accumulation through your tuesday. another system looks to head our way on christmas eve. that one is looking weak. right now we've got the rain in the north bay. by 11:00 the east bay and perhaps san francisco looking at some rain. but certainly by 1:00, 2:00, it's pretty much everywhere.

thousands of cases of chocolates are being pulled from walmart shelves because of allergy fears. mars is recalling dove chocolate assortments snowflakes because the items may contain other candies. the company sudden concerned about people with peanut, wheat and egg allergies, which are ingredients in the other candies. customers should return them for a refund. in florida a woman's car was purring like a kitten. the driver said she heard meows but didn't think much of it because there's a lot of stray cats live in her area. then someone left a note saying they thought a cat was stuck under her hood. her boyfriend found a kitten by the back of the engine. the cat had been there for at

>> welcome back, everyone. we are starting this half-hour with a look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi carolyn, good morning to you. hi, everyone. i have looped the past couple of hours. it's raining in san francisco just a few drops. it is raining in the north bay and it will continue to sink to the south and east today, providing more wet weather. you see the shaded of green here indicating light rain.

as it further south into the peninsula a little sooner than we thought, you, too, will be looking at rain. also 580 looking damp. in the mountains it's been guy bet you a wintry weather advisory through tuesday for more light snow head your way. here's a look at san francisco for the rest of the day. the rain has started pretty much on cue with this forecast model. it picks up at 1:00. it continues to pick up not only through 3:00, but through the dinner hour and then beyond. looks like 8:00, 9:00, still some showers out there. about it's cold. it will be a chilly rain today with temperatures staying in the 50s. we will talk about tomorrow's stronger system coming up. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa >> breaking news out of the east bay. firefighters have now rescued a person who was caught under a bart train this morning at the downtown berkeley station. it happened about an hour ago around 8:30. bart officials say paramedics are now bringing that person to

>> and i had the opportunity to speak with senator sanders this morning. he was in high spirits. felt good about his debate appearance last night. and if twitter is any indication, he actually picked up the most followers. lawna zak, abc7 news. back to you. >> during the democratic debate all three took jabs at gop frontrunner donald trump. trump took to social media and said hillary clinton lied. trump said the democratic candidates are all talk and no objection and claims all the statements he makes are true. >> many of the things i have said, and i think just about all of them, they may have been controversial at one point, george, bug they are not controversial in the end because people start to say, you know, trump is actually right. >> trump also called democratic candidate bernie sanders a liar for his statement in the debate that trump suggested immigrants

coming to america are criminals. sanders fired back at trump. >> i will say this straightforward, i think you have a pathological liar there. >> pathological? >> i really do. much of what he says are lies or gross distortions of reality. >> sanders also called trump a liar for saying he saw thousands of people celebrating after the september 11th attacks but no evidence of that actually happening. a plan is dead after police shot him inside a busy los angeles area emergency room. the man was at the harbor ucla medical center in torrance for injuries from an earlier fight with police who were trying to arrest him for vandalism. as officers were escorting him on a gurney to take him to jail, they took off the man's handcuffs to reposition him and police said he tried to start another fight. >> the suspect picked up a metal stool within the emergency room and it was about that time that the officer tried to use the taser.

that didn't work. then a witness stated that the suspect reached for one of the officer's guns. >> that's when an officer fired one shot at him. doctors and nurses rushed the man into surgery, but he later died. he was the 20th person killed by on-duty lapd officers this year. memorial services ended for three of the 14 people killed in the san bernardino terrorist attack. during services yesterday relatives recalled sierra claiborne's smile and her sweet demeanor. nicholas was remembered for his devotion to his wife and his faith. and michael wetzel's family spoke about his love for his six children. the relatives of all 14 victims met privately with president obama friday night in san bernardino, and they shared stories about their loved ones. >> starting tomorrow the faa will require all drones to be

registered to make it easier to identify owners. according to the faa, drones cannot weigh more than 55 pounds that includes if a camera is attached. the unmanned aircraft must also be marked with the owner's unique registration number that would allow officers to track down owners in they violate any rules. registration will cost five dollars and it must be renewed every three years. california state university has received a record number of applications for the upcoming 2016 fall term. more than 830,000 prospective students are vying for a spot at the nation's largest public university system. that's a nearly 5% increase over this year. officials say the increase reflects the growth in the demand for higher education. but capacity issues persist because of state funding limitations. csu enrolls about 460,000 students across 23 campuses.

>> if you are planning to eat crab this holiday season, you are out of luck. according to the press democrat, state health officials say chances are low that californians will be able to eat dungeness crab before next year. they say crabs are coming back with concentrations above the allowable limit of the toxic acid, even though overall levels have died down. test crabs have to come back completely clean for two weeks in a row before they can lift the ban. so, well. >> have to wait a little longer. good morning, everyone. raindrops here in san francisco. they are spreading over the bay area slowly. from our exploratorium camera you can see for yourself, it's 48 degrees and probably airport delays stacking up. temperatures will stay cool. it will be a rainy, soggy sunday and it continues the next 24 hours with a break throughout the middle of the week. we will talk about christmas. it may be on the wet side christmas eve. we will talk about it next.

where a plane crashed near bakersfield said there may have been kids on board. he also said the family is from gilroy. the faa and the ntsb are now at the scene. officials don't know if the plane is the same one the faa reported missing yesterday afternoon from san jose's reed hill view airport. let's check out sports now. a scheduling rarity in the bay area this afternoon with both the raiders and the 49ers playing at home at the same time. the green bay packers will face the silver and black. kickoff 1:05 this afternoon. and across the bay the cincinnati bengals take on the niners at levi stadium. kickoff in santa clara at 1:25 p.m. meanwhile, the college football bowl season is now underway. yesterday san jose state tried to win the team's fourth straight bowl game against georgia state. here's mike shumann with the highlights in this morning's sports.

a winter weather advisory through 2:00 -- or 10:00 on tuesday. two storm systems on the way. storm impact scale rates this one as a number 1, tomorrow number 2. and that's because we will see more rain and gustier winds for your monday. inters of the mountains, up to two feet above 7,000 feet through tuesday. 4 to 8 inches above 4,000 feet. unfortunately the second system coming in request rain in the mountains. question will have to deal with that. but the upper elevations where a lot of the bases are, certainly we will see the snow. 48 san francisco, 45 san jose. in the 30s morgan hill. 50s half moon bay. from the sutro tower cap raw, sunshine this morning and pretty pictures. sun faded quickly. the clouds filled in and 47 in concord. you are in the 30s, livermore, too. a cold start. the clouds moved in and they are warm up a little bit. with the rain today it's going to be a raw afternoon.

and tomorrow it's going to mess up the afternoon commute. and the second system, taupe's system, is going to last through tuesday. the bulk of tuesday will be dry and then the last system looks weaker with christmas eve painted wet. it should be out of here by christmas day. today by noontime, we are wet pretty much everywhere. then by the afternoon it just fills in and picks up a little bit. 2:00, the north bay, santa rosa heavier rain. by 4:00 san francisco has some pretty good downpours over into san leandro, half moon bay, and in can't clara. it's going to be soggy. should be light rain for most of the day for you of the but it doesn't end by the evening hours. in fact, leaving the game, and if you have dinner plans, it's still soggy out there and showers through the late evening hours. oakland a cool, raw day. bring the rain gear, just in the 50s all afternoon. rainfall amounts anywhere from a tenth or so from mountain view in san jose, but three quarters inch up in the north bay, even the coast with oakland and

san francisco not doing too bad. quarter of an inch by the delta. and the second system could bring an additional inch to the north bay. so this is some good news here with the afternoon really being sloppy on monday. but we've got the rain works he will take it any way or time we can get it the by tuesday morning it's still soggy. it will take until midday when that system clears on out. if you are headed down to the south bay, you are spending time in the santa clara area, chilly, rainy day there and the highs today just in the 50s with a wet day for everyone. the accuweather seven-day forecast, two systems in the next two days. the stronger one tomorrow. lingering showers on tuesday. we are dry on wednesday. the next system on thursday, maybe a quarter ininch that san francisco. christmas day looks dry and we talked about boxing day. that looks dry, as well. >> all right. that british holiday. thank you, lisa. has broken records in the opening weekend. it's in the $125 million range. and disney, which owns "star wars," now says it made $238 million over the weekend. that crushed the old record held by jurassic world this summer at nearly $209 million. a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, "star wars" opened the minds and manning nations of a generation and generations that followed. today the influence on art stretches beyond the stars and into art studios and galleries right here in the bay area. abc news anchor ama daetz has the details. >> san francisco artist robert thinks big when he paints. his inspiration? toys. >> this body of work came about about ten years ago when i was going through a box of my old toys that i had played with as a kid and i hadn't seen in a long

time. as a kid they were like sacred and magical and they were larger than life and i wanted to try to recapture that. the reflection in r2d2 in the far left is the doorway to my studio. >> this massive painting of "star wars" action figure tells the story of the movies. the price taking for this one is $200,000. smaller pieces can be had for a grand. >> nice landing! >> "star wars" toys were so important to a generation of the world. men between the ages of 30 and 55 seem to have a really fond memory of these things, and i'm no different. >> robert merges historical traditions to illustrate his art creating tapestry or stain glassed type images. >> this depicts about 200 different "star wars" toys. this took about 2,000 of studio time spread over about a year and a half. >> this time-lapse video shows

how much work goes into one of his masterpieces. he makes his paintings pop by first painting each character in blue and then carefully layering colors to create the life-like images. >> when i look at his work i don't just see nostalgia, i see an exploration of the things that shaped him as an artist. matt is chair of the comeics program at the college of the arts in san francisco. he said "star wars" had a huge impact on art. >> the pre"star wars," pop art featured a lot of commercialism, and it was a reflection of the modern world. post "star wars" you saw science fiction as a legitimate form of art. >> it's difficult to get anyone to stare at a painting for northern 20 seconds. part of the goal is to make a painting someone can stare at for a few minutes. >> ama daetz, abc7 news. >> and you can see some of robert's work next month on display beginning january 17th in the bedford gallery at the center for the arts in walnut creek.
