chipotle restaurant chain. this morning health officials saying five more people became sick after eating at two of the mexican style restaurants. it's not known if these e. coli cases in north dakota, kansas and oklahoma are linked to a larger outbreak in october. in all almost 500 people have been sickened after eating at a chipotle in recent months. well, alarming news for anyone at work right now. a new study is underscoring the dangers of driving drowsy. harvard researchers found driving after working a nightshift can make you up to six times more likely to crash your car. in fact, researchers had to halt testing because nearly half the shift workers almost crashed even though they knew they were being watched. research shows a driver awake for 24 hours compares to a drunken drive with a .10 blood alcohol level. .10. that's pretty high level.

good morning, i'm reena ninan. >> i'm kendis gibson. here are some of the top headlines we're following this morning on "world news now." winter's opening act set to disrupt travel plans for millions of americans days before christmas. at least a dozen states are under winter weather alerts as heavy snows slammed the western states. full details straight ahead. army sergeant bowe bergdahl held captive by the taliban for five years after he walked away from his post will be arraigned today. he's charged with desertion and endangering troops. a conviction could land him in prison for life. bill cosby sued former super model beverly johnson over her claims he tried to drug and sexually assault her. johnson responded to the suit by saying that abusers often try to sbim state and weaken their victims.

>> at least a dozen states on winter weather alerts. western states getting slammed with feet of snow and severe storms are hitting the south. we'll get started with our abc's gio benitez. >> reporter: strong winter storms slamming the west. 55-mile-per-hour winds ripping this free from the its roots and snow blanketing these streets in southern california, all just in time for holiday travel. this, as more than 100 million people hit the road this week, the most ever. that's nearly 1 in every 3 americans. 38.1 million people are flying over the holidays. an estimated 2.2 million people expected to fly each day. atlanta, los angeles and chicago among the busiest airports. but the overwhelming majority of travelers will be using their cars. the good news? the average price of gas is at a new low, $2 a gallon. that's less than a gallon of milk. gas down 32 cents from this time last year.

we'll have to deal with episodes of rain but even with this exceptional warm there we'll at least get a chance to enjoy a dry christmas. not necessarily a snowy one, but dry. if you want snow, you have to go to the west where you have snow potential. >> temperatures in the 70s in d.c. and new york on christmas eve. amazing this year. paul, thank you. over in the west coast now, the danger of an avalanche has halted the search for a missing skier in washington state. 43-year-old monty busby disappeared near snoqualmie. dozens of volunteers and four teams of dogs have been combing the area. busbee is described as an experienced back country skier. rescuers are optimistic he might be hunkered inside a snow cave or under a tarp somewhere. a suspect in sunday night's deadly crash along the las vegas strip is on suicide watch at a las vegas jail right now. 24-year-old lakeisha holloway has told authorities she was stressed about finding a place to sleep for her and her daughter before allegedly running down groups of people on

the strip sidewalk. one person was killed which is why holloway is being charged with murder. she could face additional charges, as well. donald trump and hillary clinton are locked in a heavyweight political showdown and neither seems ready to tone down the rhetoric. last night in michigan, trump got a little personal using what some might consider a vulgar reference. he called clinton's bathroom break during saturday's debate quote, disgusting. current round of nattiness stems from that debate as abc's jonathan karl reports. >> reporter: hillary clinton's campaign is saying, quote, hell no, she won't apologize for this shot she took at donald trump in the abc news democratic debate. >> he is becoming isis' best recruiter. they are going to people, showing videos of donald trump insulting islam and muslims in order to recruit more radical jihadists. >> reporter: after the debate, clinton's campaign could provide no direct evidence that happened.

using that, "we're fooling ourselves." jonathan karl, abc news, grand rapids, michigan. >> what if we're wrong about donald trump? i mean the polling out there that it's not as close. what if he has a much more significant landslide? you know, when it was the elections in britain back in may, they said that the conservatives and labor were 34, 33%. 1% difference. >> israeli elections, as well. >> in the end in britain it ended up being 38% to 31%. it was a much greater landslide. we're seeing that. what if the right is far underrepresented in polling? can we count these numbers? is it a reflective representation? could he have more support than we're actually seeing? >> that sounds like what everybody in the bush campaign is hoping. > that trump has more support. >> that hopefully the polling is completely wrong. >> my point is what if the right, the people who really follow trump, what if they are underrepresented in polling and

actually have a much greater majority. >> a lot of people said that is exactly the case. a lot of people admittedly when you do the polling and face to face would not admit to you face to face they are in support of trump but will do so online. >> more fearful or hesitant. on to prosecutors in baltimore say they'll retry the police officer whose first trial ended in a hung jury. a new trial set to start in the june for william porter in connection with the death of freddie gray while in police custody. officer caesar goodson's trial begins january 6th. he was driving the van in which gray was riding. another high profile case in which a prisoner died in police custody. a grand jury in houston says there will be no indictments in the death of sandra bland. she was stopped by a trooper

and later died in her cell. the grand jury will decide if the trooper should face charges. it's back to class day. schools in new hampshire's second biggest city are reopening. they were closed yesterday after an e-mail threatened to harm students but administrators found no evidence supporting the very specific threats. there will be extra security today. some parents plan to keep their kids home, as well. more troubles for the embattled executive facing securities fraud charges. martin shkreli was fired as the ceo of a pharmaceutical company, a job he held for about a month. he sparked outrage over the summer for raising the cost of a life saving drug 4,000%. last week one day after his arrest he resigned as ceo of another company touring pharmaceuticals. a out couple miles from the hospital when a baby onboard couldn't wait. kristen alred delivered her baby in the family truck on the

just kept mowing everyone down. >> it looked like she wasn't even trying to stop the car. she had both of her hands on the wheel and was looking wheel and was looking straight forward and there were men running after her, trying to stop the vehicle and they couldn't get to her. >> we're going to need somebody to shut down traffic. >> reporter: the famed las vegas strip shut down. police believe she was previously living in oregon. in 2012, she was featured in a video that helps at risk youth there. >> boy, have i come a long ways. >> police believe she drove from oregon to las vegas where she had been living in her car for days. police say there was no sign of alcohol but they do believe that she was under the influence of a stimulant at the time. it all finally came to an end here at a casino a few blocks away where police say she pulled up to the valet operator and asked him to call 911 that she had just hit people on las vegas boulevard. she's now facing charges of murder with a deadly weapon and more charges are pending. kayna whitworth, abc news, las vegas. enrique marquez friend of syed farook has been denied

bail. a federal judge ruled marquez was a danger to the community and should remain behind bars. he has been charged in connection with two abandoned terror plots that he planned with farook and for illegally buying two assault rifles used in the massacre. and now to another high-profile court appearance. sergeant bowe bergdahl goes before a military judge today arraigned on charges of desertion and endangering troops. bergdahl was held captive by the taliban for five years. if convicted of the more serious charge, he could spend the rest of his life in prison. six american service members are dead and two wounded in the deadliest attack on u.s. forces in afghanistan in three years. among them was new york city police detective joseph lemm, a member of the air national guard. with more here's abc's terry moran. >> reporter: the attack happened not far from the huge bagram air base, the largest american

and what really happened? >> reporter: investigators don't believe alcohol was involved but they're testing whether holloway was under the influence of drugs. she's facing at least one count of murder and possibly several counts of attempted murder. reena and kendis. >> thank you so much, brandi. an avalanche danger suspended the search for a missing skier in washington state. 43-year-old monty busbee disappeared over the weekend over the area there. police have located his truck with his cell phone inside. dozens of volunteers and four teams of dogs have been combing the area. despite this setback, rescuers are optimistic. >> he could be in a snow cave, he could be under a tarp just waiting for us. maybe you know, who knows? maybe a broken ankle or something waiting for us to get there. >> and in that area, snoqualmie, busbee is described as an experienced back country skier known to carry a backpack with gear and an avalanche beacon. as winter officially arrives, there's proof in the pacific northwest. >> another storm is hitting washington and oregon with heavy snowfall making travel dangerous in higher elevations. accuweather's paul williams has our holiday forecast.

morning to you, paul. >> good morning, paul. >> thanks, kendis, reena. like the story line of a bad movie you wish was over, storms continue to slam into the northwest part of the country. frequent storms continue to pound the northwest and pacific coast with heavy showers and flooding potential along i-5 and believe it or not, now we have feet of snow. yes, significant snow that's going to form in the northwest part of the country. now towards the east, southerly flow will set up for warm conditions with lots of rain. the good news is the rain will clear by christmas. but it's still going to be warm, not feeling like christmas but it still is. reena, kendis. >> that is a bad movie. we have a good movie in florida. good weather though for a bit of space travel history to be made at cape canaveral. spacex launched the falcon 9 rocket since the last one exploded in june. this launch successfully deployed 11 small communication satellites. in a major first, the first stage rocket flew back to the launch site and landed upright marking the first crucial step in being able to recycle these rockets.

congratulations to the folks there. big step. and two american astronauts made quick work of a repair job during an unplanned space walk outside the space station. scott kelly and timothy kopra took about a half hour to release the brake handles on a rail car and help guide it back into place. the car needed to be moved so a ship full of supplies could land at the space station tomorrow. >> nice work, guys. and if you thought "star wars" has permeated every aspect of civilization, you may be right, especially given this next story. here's a turtle hospital in north carolina caring for 20 new turtles some of which they named after "star wars" characters. >> there's one you see there inside that is darth vader. another one is yoda. both of them and the others just arrived from new england. >> they were found struggling in the cold water and sent south to warm up and continued growing. the hospital's hope is to send darth vader and yoda and the other turtles back into the ocean eventually.

more trouble for the chipotle restaurant chain. this morning health officials saying five more people became sick after eating at two of the mexican style restaurants. it's not known if these e. coli cases in north dakota, kansas and oklahoma are linked to a larger outbreak in october. in all almost 500 people have been sickened after eating at a chipotle in recent months. well, alarming news for anyone at work right now. a new study is underscoring the dangers of driving drowsy. harvard researchers found driving after working a nightshift can make you up to six times more likely to crash your car. in fact, researchers had to halt testing because nearly half the shift workers almost crashed even though they knew they were being watched. research shows a driver awake for 24 hours compares to a drunken drive with a .10 blood alcohol level. .10.
