at chicago international airport. it's before 6:00 a.m. right there, already so crowded. we're going to begin with the weather here and rob is out in times square. tough weather for so much of the country, not here. 70 degrees on christmas eve? >> can you believe this? the incredible warm december continues. it will only increase over the next several days. another set of problems, dense fog, flooding and the threat for springlike severe weather. fog, so thick in arkansas that it triggered these two frightening chain reactions on interstate 49 close to the texas/louisiana border. three trucks colliding in the northbound lane, one spilling glue all over the road. directly across the highway, a ten-car pileup leaving at least three dead. seven hospitalized. in california, wind gusts up to 80 miles per hour picking up and tossing at least seven tractor trailers.

many drivers pulling off the roads and waiting out the winds. >> it's crazy, man. it's like 80-mile-an-hour winds. >> reporter: the fierce winds also responsible for toppling over this gas station in the mojave desert. overnight, in colorado, drivers pulling over the road to put on chains as they cautiously creep across the loveland pass. in utah, whiteout conditions dropping visibility. people opting to stay off the roads. parts of the state getting 24 inches of snow in the past 24 hours. wow, two feet in two day. three feet if you're traveling over i-5, some problems, bring along the chains if you're driving. the heat across the east is going to trigger severe weather. this is serious business. memphis could see some

tornadoes. flood watches now posted from the florida panhandle across parts of georgia into the carolinas. here comes the record heat. if you like snow, lara, head out west. >> that's for sure. rob, thank you. lots of concern about the weather if you're heading out this morning. here's a look at the roads in some major cities across the country as you've heard, today is expected to be the busiest on highways across the country with more people driving than ever thanks to low gas prices. abc's linsey davis is at a new york state traffic command center in hawhtorne, new york. good morning, linsey. >> reporter: good morning. yes, we are in the central nervous system with a massive look at the roads in several new york counties, an estimated 100 million people expected to hit the roads this holiday weekend so if you want to miss the worst traffic you may want to pack up the car and kids now. as you said today is expected to be the busiest travel day the worst hours between 3:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. the best day to drive is said to be on christmas day if you might be able to manage to swing that.

the second worst day for travel is expected to be sunday, so do yourself a favor and stay in place until monday if that's possible. also some good news for drivers, aaa is saying that the national gas price now below $2 for the first time in more than six years. that also explains why there may be more drivers on the road. >> right. all right, linsey, thank you so much. stay off those roads, 3:00 to 6:00 p.m., great tips there. long lines forming at the airports this morning. abc's alex perez is at o'hare with that and good morning to you, alex. >> reporter: hey, good morning, lara. long doesn't begin to describe it. take a look behind me here. we are at terminal 3, the american terminal, and the line seems to be going and going and going snaking around the security checkpoint here. now, of course, this is expected to be a very busy one. 38 million people will be getting on planes, 3.5 million

right here at chicago o'hare, all that due to part to lower airfare prices, down 4% this year because of lower jet fuel prices. and there is some more good news for the chicago area. usually this time of year we're dealing with snow, with ice, with cold, but right now temperatures here are extremely mild. so everyone here is hoping that is going to help keep things moving along. lara. >> all right, alex, thank you somp. george. we're going to move on now to the race for president and hillary clinton hitting back at donald trump, her campaign calls his words disgusting, sexist slurs as a brand-new poll shows trump holding on to one of the biggest leads yet in the republican race. jon karl in washington with all the latest. good morning, jon. >> reporter: good morning, george. that new poll from cnn has trump with a 21-point lead over his closest republican rival. but it is his war of words with hillary clinton that is now getting ugly. after donald trump's crude comments monday aimed at hillary clinton. >> she was going to beat obama. she was favored to win and she got [ bleep ]. she lost. i mean, she lost. >> reporter: overnight clinton responded to trump's comment in

an interview with "the des moines register" saying he's shown a "penchant for sexism." >> i don't know that he has any boundaries at all and his bigotry, his bluster, his bullying have become his campaign. >> reporter: the clinton campaign is blasting trump calling him out for, quote, degrading language and disgusting sexist slurs. even clinton's democratic rival bernie sanders hit back at trump at a rally in iowa. >> this is a guy who wants to be president of the united states. he must have a very unusual relationship with women. >> reporter: and clinton doubled down on her claim that isis is using trump as a recruiting tool saying reports on arabic television like these are fueling isis. [ speaking a foreign language ] >> if you go on arabic television as we have and you look at what is being blasted out with video of mr. trump

donald trump way at the top. one more time, ted cruz in second place. now, both cruz and trump are saying it's now a two-person race on the republican side. >> well, i think it's actually going to be a three-person race. it's two people dominant. really one person dominant at this point, george, but i think it's going to come down to a three-person race based on what happens in new hampshire but one thing that i wanted to say, the last time a republican was this dominant in a primary was in 1999, 2000, that's the last time a republican has been this dominant right before christmas. >> and that was george w. bush who you worked for who went on to get the nomination, become president of the united states. so you believe now that donald trump has a legitimate chance to be the nominee? >> i think he has more than a legitimate chance to be the nominee. i think right now the odds favor him in the course of this. he has a 20, 21-point lead. everybody else is way down the list. he's probably right now going to win new hampshire. i mean i think he is -- the problem he has, there's one electorate that the republicans

like him and the general electorate has a real problem with him, that's his achilles' heel. is the general election. which he's very vulnerable in. >> okay, matthew dowd, thanks very much. turning now to a major scare at one of the biggest malls in the country, a gun going off during a robbery sending shoppers running for cover during one of the busiest shopping days of the year. abc's linzie janis is at the mall in garden city, new york. good morning, linzie. >> reporter: good morning, lara. everything is back to normal at this mall. it's opened bright and early for holiday shopping but it was a scary afternoon. hundreds of shoppers trying to get up last-minute gifts ended up fearing for their lives. terrified shoppers sent scrambling. some racing for the exit. >> it was like pure pandemonium. everybody was running. >> reporter: all of a sudden i just heard a loud gunshot. >> the first thing we thought was terrorism. >> reporter: others hiding wherever they could. >> i'm pretty sure something just happened. >> we locked the doors and ran to the bathroom at the back of

my store and we just waited. >> reporter: area schools locked down as dozens of police swarm the packed roosevelt field mall in long island. one of the largest indoor malls in the country after authorities say a suspect tried to hold up the rolex section of this jewelry store. >> this was a robbery. the motive was clearly a robbery. this was not an active shooter. >> reporter: the store's security guard struggling with him. when the suspect's gun fired a single shot out into the mall hitting a 67-year-old mall employee. an off-duty nypd officer shopping in the mall helping hold the gunman down until police arrived hauling him away. >> we have a significant and very robust detail. after paris we heightened our response to these soft targets and heightened a number of patrols and we maintain that at this time. >> reporter: within 90 minutes police giving shoppers and mall staff the all clear. this morning, the man who was shot in serious but stable condition.

shoppers we spoke to say they heard that shot and reacted immediately instinctively running and hiding fearing another mass shooting. lara. >> i bet. thank you, linzie. that must have been terrifying. move on now to the nfl. they are speaking out about the new film "concussion" which tells the story of the doctor who sounded alarm bells about the brain injuries in pro football. the league wants people to know they're doing everything they can and abc's ryan smith has this exclusive report. >> you're going to war with a corporation that owns the day of the week. >> reporter: this morning, the national football league speaking out exclusively to abc news just days before the premiere of "concussion." do you want fans to see this movie? >> i think that there's a benefit to this movie that we'll elevate the conversation around health and safety of our game. >> reporter: the film's trailer suggesting back then that the league didn't want to face issues concerning head trauma. >> the nfl does not want to talk

to you. >> when a movie like this comes out and fans or maybe others say, this is a sign that the nfl tried to cover things up before. how do we know that they're not giving us all the information now? >> i say take a look at what we've done. >> reporter: the league saying a lot has changed since 2005. updates to 39 rules related to health and safety in the last decade. implementing new concussion protocols and investing millions to improve equipment. like special straps that aim to regulate head movement in the helmet. but is this enough? dr. omalu telling robin roberts no matter how protective the helmet it won't stop head injuries. >> look what happens to your brain when you have an impact, the brain bounces around the skull, so assuming you take a padding, the padding will simulate the helmet. no matter how thick it is, look at what happens. >> what difference does it make when a head-to-head impact or some sort of very hard impact could traumatize the brain no matter how thick the outer protection layers are? >> you can improve the rules and

you can improve the safety of the equipment. >> reporter: do you think we can ever stop head injuries in football? >> probably not but i think we can minimize them to make them as safe as possible. >> reporter: for "good morning america," ryan smith, abc news, new york. >> this is becoming such a major issue and we just learned the nih announced a major new study of the whole issue of concussions and brain injuries, as well. we want to get to the other top stories. >> cecilia is here this morning. and there are some new developments in the bowe bergdahl case. >> good to see you. happy almost merry christmas. the army sergeant who walked off his base in afghanistan and spent five years as a taliban hostage has some decisions to make before his next military court appearance in three weeks. bergdahl right there in his dress uniform for a hearing faces charges of desertion and misbehavior before the enemy. he did not enter a plea and still must decide whether he wants to face a court-martial with a jury of soldiers or just with one judge. and busted here in new york, a so-called hacker to the stars accused of stealing the personal information of as many as 130 celebrities.

authorities say 23-year-old alonzo knowles hacked into e-mails to steal the scripts of upcoming tv shows and movies and then he tried to sell them, also, he is accused of trying to sell sex tapes. the victims' names have not been released. and a high-profile murder trial is now set for next summer in los angeles. real estate heir robert durst is accused of killing one of his friends to keep her from cooperating with an investigation into the disappearance of his wife. durst is currently jailed in new orleans on a weapons charge. he's agreed to be extradited to l.a. after that case is resolved. and take a look at this in china. terrifying moments as a firefighter escapes a burning apartment building. his body right there covered in flames as he jumps from a window. somehow he suffered only minor injuries. hard to watch. and, finally, one bad guy left hanging. watch what happened when a man tried to break into this store by climbing from the roof through the ceiling. he only made it halfway.

he is a reigning four-time world cup skiing champion. >> unbelievable! >> reporter: marcel hirscher's used to battling dangerous terrains, racing down mountains at death-defying speeds but tuesday night the real danger -- [ speaking a foreign language ] >> reporter: just ten seconds into his slalom run in italy, a drone comes out of nowhere crashing into the run with such force it broke into parts missing the skier by inches. the champion skier continues on his run as if nothing happened ultimately losing the race but saying this is horrible. this can never happen again. this can be a serious injury. but situations like this could possibly get a lot more common with some ski resorts adding areas called drone zones where for a fee of around 200 bucks professionally operated drones will film skiers at every angle producing the ultimate skiing selfie. and this isn't the first time a drone has caused serious drama at a sporting event. >> we have a moment here where

we're not entirely certain what it is that landed in the stands. >> reporter: look at the top left of the screen. in september during a heated tennis match at the u.s. open a drone was caught on tape flying into new york's armstrong stadium crashing down in the grandstands but, as for hirscher, he's not letting the dance with the drone get to him making light of it posting, heavy air traffic in italy, #luckyme. we are already seeing the fallout. they are now banning these drone cameras from world cup skiing competitions. now, of course, they get these money shots and they have these cameras on them and it's great but it's not worth it. we look at this and it worked out and he's making light. but if he had been hit going 23 miles an hour by a drone that could have been nasty. >> what a testament to his prowess that he didn't even flinch. that was very close. >> thank you, t.j. we're going to move on now to a missouri college student charged with murdering her fiance. police believe she did it and

staged the scene to look like a suicide. abc's mara schiavocampo here with the story. good morning, mara. >> reporter: george, good morning, the victim also a student and on the cusp of a new life having just graduated with a new job and new apartment but officials say that the woman who was to be his future wife ended it all. this morning a college student charged with murder, after police say she tried to make her fiance's death look like a suicide. >> it's a tragic situation, just the whole thing. >> reporter: authorities say early this month they found 22-year-old meghan werner staggering down a missouri street at 5:45 a.m. when stopped officers say she told them her fiance had committed suicide. according to police documents officers arriving at the couple's home found the body of 22-year-old curt marzolf on the floor inside a bedroom with an assault-style rifle nearby. the engineering student dead just one week before his graduation ceremony. >> which is a shame, he already had himself a full-time job as an engineer in kansas city. >> reporter: but the report also

notes a spent rifle shell casing was found on the floor of the living room adding that there were signs of a physical altercation in the apartment and blood on werner's pants that they believe belonged to the victim leading them to arrest her. >> she's never been in any trouble. this is tragic for both families. >> reporter: marzolf and werner both students at this university had been dating for three years and were newly engaged. the couple was reportedly part of a local hunting club and had guns in their home. now, marzolf's loved ones are mourning their loss. >> missouri university of science and technology will present a bachelor of science in mining engineering to curt marzolf. >> reporter: his brother walking in his place at graduation. >> we confer this degree and offer with our sincere sympathy. >> reporter: the family telling abc news in a statement, curt was truly an amazing young man who was always thinking of others first. he was so excited for the future. a future now gone.

werner has pleaded not guilty. she's out of jail right now. $1 million bail. we did reach out to her for comment but did not get a response. but there is a preliminary hearing set for the end of january so certainly we will learn a little more about the circumstances. >> let's talk about this. thank you very much. with our fbi special agent brad garrett, former fbi agent, now an abc news consultant. a sign of a struggle inside the house. what other kind of clues will they be looking for to tell the difference between murder and suicide? >> location of the shots on the body, george, the distance of the shot and if there were more than one shot. >> and, you know, is this a common kind of crime? >> well, it's not totally uncommon for people to get into an argument, guns appear, people are shot and then the person who is still alive panics and they start rearranging the scene, making it look more like an attempted suicide or a real suicide. they typically do a poor job and they do it in such haste, most

merry christmas in the guidice house this year. best known for her lavish lifestyle and over-the-top temper tantrums, guidice has spent these last months doing time at the women's prison made famous by "orange is the new black." >> what's going on? >> reporter: while rumors swirled about her and her family on the outside. >> this experience has brought joe and teresa closer. she's realized how important their marriage is and how important family is. >> reporter: before going behind bars, guidice told "gma's" own amy robach that she was doing her best to be brave for her four daughters. >> i can't just be upset and curl up in a ball and just go in a room and lock the door. i can't. i'm a mom. i have four daughters. >> when the door is shut and they are in bed, do you get to do that? >> yes. i would be lying to say that's not happening. >> reporter: originally sentenced to 15 months, she was released after less than 12 months for good behavior spending the last part of the prison time getting ready for the holidays. >> she's been keeping busy by

out and they've definitely probably decorated the house and things like that and she was like we said orchestrating from prison, making sure that the gifts that she wanted for certain people were purchased and things like that, and it's going to just be the immediate family right now. >> and she's out of prison but not necessarily free, if you will. >> she's got some rules she has to follow. >> exactly. she's technically still a prisoner. she is on home confinement until february 5th, and that means all of her comings and goings will be controlled. she has to check in with someone. >> does she wear that bracelet or no? >> so, not clear yet if she does have to, you know, check in with an officer. >> something tells me we'll find out. we'll hear about it. >> yeah, so they have a happy time together, a good holiday season, but not too long because joe is actually -- has to go into prison in march, i believe it is, so they don't have that long, and he has a longer sentence, 41 months, so, yeah. >> wow. reality show still to come?

who know, huh? >> it's not necessarily clear but she is still under contract so you might see her. >> first things first, christmas. thanks for coming. >> thank you for having me. all right, guys, we're going to switch gears now. some encouraging news for one in eight couples who struggles with infertility. a new report in "the journal of the american medical association" says in vitro fertilization or ivf may be better at helping you get pregnant than was previously believed which is why i'm joined now by dr. jennifer ashton and this is great news. explain the finding, please. >> so, this is the actual study and this may be the first time that a study looked at what the estimates are for a successful live birth after sequential ivf topics. and if you look at this graph it's a very busy curve. there's a lot going on here but what i want you to pay attention to is the shape of the curve and what you see here, bottom line is as a woman or a couple does more ivt cycles, the overall success rate goes up, so the

likelihood of having a live birth goes up, perseverance pays off. >> i know we don't have a ton of time but why? can you tell me a little bit? >> i think a lot of couples will drop out of ivf after three or four cycles because they think that they are not going to succeed and we know now that's actually not true. now, we have to remember there's a lot that goes into this on the couple's level. this is an individual decision. there's costs involved. >> it's expensive. >> it's expensive. there's emotional and physical tolls but if you want to keep trying, the odds are actually in your favor. >> it's sort of the tried and true, you know, you keep trying and you don't give up, you don't give up, and this is really good news and so i ask you as an ob/gyn what advice are you giving to couples trying to have a child? >> this will vary based on where they live in the country and how old she is, but for the average recommendation, number one, if you feel you need to see an infertility specialist go to a board-certified reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist. if you get any work done there, get copies of all tests and

even though they don't recognize it and they try to compete. they equate having likes on facebook and instagram as popularity and feel their worth is tied up in being able to emulate these people. >> you wonder what is behind these kids putting all this out and where their parents are. what about tips for parents who are dealing with kids who are feeling this kind of fear? >> i like to call it the fomo fix. there are three things you can do. number one, help your kid find their bliss, whether it's art, music, dance, get them involved in an activity they love and can become more obsessed with their own success than someone else. another thing, make sure they know that looks can be deceiving. we see that picture of one moment in those kids' lives. we don't know the back story. everyone has issues and problems and lastly, tell your kids to reach for the stars but have a plan in place. you know, there is one example from other rich kids of instagram, a kid making apps since he was 12, a self-made millionaire. that's something other people can do but if you want that, if you want what those kids have, you have to work for it. >> it's a little different where you're spending somebody else's money.

>> reporter: set in late 19th century german it is a vibrant rock musical about teens struggling with morality, sexuality and the perils of miscommunication. wasn't the theme about it being a lack of communication that inspired you? >> yes, it was. this is a story about people literally dying to be heard. people who have been marginalized and denied a voice. >> reporter: incorporating eight deaf actors required quite a bit of theatrical innovation. is this one of them here? >> we'll turn them on to warn actors before they have to do something. >> reporter: some happen in plain sight right on center stage. >> every time somebody is lighting a candle or opening a letter or pointing off to stage, it might be cueing a deaf person to start signing. >> you follow me? >> yes, momma. >> reporter: signing comes natural already for cameron mann i'm known for "the practice" but before her acting career took off she worked as an interpreter.

so we're back with last-minute christmas wrapping challenge and put rob and mara to the challenge. we'll look at how well they did wrapping oddly shaped items and one of my favorites maxwell ryan is here to show us how it's really done. the first challenge for our teams was the soccer ball. i have actually given a soccer ball and it is a unique

challenge so, rob, why don't you show us first how did you fare? >> i didn't have much of a strategy. i felt bad. what boos? >> it's an art piece. >> and mara, your soccer ball. >> oh, yeah. >> sorry, rob. maxwell. >> here's the thing, clearly this is a better job. >> yeah. >> clearly. >> but she had to work really hard. there is a trick. the trick is, you take a ball and put it in a bowel and wrap it and tie it up. >> why in a bowl. >> it holds it and then the paper -- >> and then the paper is here. >> okay, there's no cut. it's just one sheet of paper. >> just one sheet of paper. >> tomorrow you're up. the next challenge was utensils. you want to give someone a house

warming gift. new kitchen, new home. how do you do it? i'll let mara start first. >> a similar idea. you have a candy theme. >> i'm hormonally primed for this and nesting like crazy. this is right up my wheelhouse. >> let me tell you, this segment got my hormones cranking too and -- look at that advance -- that spatula. >> he shredded the paper itself. >> you wanted the paper shr shredded? >> yeah. that's advanced. that's artwork. >> i'll let maxwell break the news to you. >> i think he put it in a blender as well. >> so -- >> people -- >> people. >> use the apron. >> use the apron, this is call ed a japanese wrapping technique which you use fabric which you had -- >> what a great thing because kitchen items and an apron. we tricked you. you thought you needed to be wearing the apron. >> don't reveal the final. the final was candles.

add the eggs one at a time. >> how do you add eggs one at a time when they're all in here? goo luck. >> just pour slowly. >> whoa, yeah. >> see, you can do it. >> all right, once that's in there, how long do we blend it? >> until it's all combined together and then we'll add the water, add it warm to start activating the yeeft and at the end we have a little bit of melted butter. >> okay. >> there you go, you'll mix this for about a few minutes and once it's done, you're going to end up with something like this. >> this is what it looks like when you're done. >> okay. >> ah. >> this was left outside with just plastic wrap on top for 30 minutes so we start the fermentation then we take a little bit of this dough, we can take just with a spoon and we'll mix up what we call powder sugar. small pieces of sugar. we'll just go into sprinkle on top right here.

place it right here. >> just that simple. and once you're done you have something small like this. very like vash de crispy, caramelized on the outside then if you open it, actually you see the maple syrup. this one is special. this is the recipe we do at the kitchen. we have the maple syrup inside so if you do it at home you can do a simple one like this. >> you brought other treats. what do we have here. >> the cinnamon spun roll which is made of -- it's really delicious. christmas, this is one of our best-seller, christmas morning cereal. cut it with chocolate with cinnamon and caramelized hazelnut and this is our wreath for the holidays which is made of bread with some marshmallows on top. >> you never cease to amaze me. we'll enjoy this the second i get off air. thank you, dom. >> thank you. >> all right, guys. we actually got some of the
