>> 140 people on board a southwest flight. the plane had to make an emergency landing. good afternoon. thank you for joining us. >> you can see the flight pattern on this map as the plane circled over the center valley for nearly four hours. laura anthony joining us live now at oakland international airport with the very latest. laura? >> hi, larry. most of these passengers were booked onto other flights after they returned here to oakland international airport. that is to continue their trip to chicago.

but some of those folks told us after their ordeal this morning, they are going to leave the airport and the flying for another day. >> reporter: not quite the holiday memory ashley was hoping for. it was clear something was wrong almost as soon as they left the ground. >> the plane was thumping and thumping and then it was going very slow because they were trying to get the landing gear up and it wouldn't go up. >> flight 2547 went around in circles burning fuel. a good u long time for the passengers to contemplate what could happen next. >> when the pilot kept coming out of the cockpit, that's what was really alarming. i heard oxygen mask. i heard we're going to have to fly low. >> with fuel tanks empty, the plane returned to oakland and

first made a pass by the patrol tower so air traffic controllers could get a good look at the plane's landing gear. >> we didn't know if the landing gear was going to work. that was the point of flying low making sure that the gear was out and visible to everybody. >> the second time around, it was time to land. >> it was intense, very intense. >> among those who decided they had enough flying for the day. they'll board another plane to chicago tomorrow. at oakland international, abc 7 news. >> federal transportation investigators have been at the scene of a fatal plane crash all day trying to figure out what happened. sky 7 hd was over the wooded crash site today. it's hard to make out what's going on beneath all of those trees. crews are trying to recover the body of the pilot. john sakko was on his way to

oakland yesterday morning when he lost contact tw air traffic control. >> document the wreckage as it came to rest. i'll be taking some photos, getting getting longitude and latitude photos and things like that. >> officials say preliminary report on the crash will be available after the holidays. >> we have some developing news where fire crews are on the scene of a three-alarm fire. this is a video of that fire burning of a self storage facility. several storage units are burning, but firefighters are getting the upper hand. >> two firefighters in the bayview district when they were stopped. there's no word right now on the condition of the firefighters, but we know at least one went to the hospital to get checked out. >> turning now to our weather. a live look outside. this is from our camera atop. we've got another wet and cold

storm headed our way. >> spencer christian is here with our accuweather update. >> a little chill already ahead of this winter storm. it eelgt goi it's going to bring us even more of a chill. at the moment, we are clear and dry in the bay area. there's the storm coming our way producing rain and snow up in the western corner of the state. including a long stretch of highway 101 and winter weather advisory in effect with that area of middletown. that could affect from 10:00 tonight until 10:00 tomorrow night. that extends far north. and we feel a winter storm warning in effect until 4:00 a.m. friday. all around, winter weather is expected. this stormt approaching is a two on our storm impact scale of 1-5.

heaviest will fall in the south bay where it's much needed. snow levels will come down to 2,000 to 3,000 feet. here's our forecast or at least a portion of it beginning at 7:00 tonight, we'll see showers develop tonight in the north bay first, sweeping south to the orr night hours about 5:00 a.m. hour, we'll see waves of rain sweeping through the way abay a. it's going to be a wet start to christmas eve tomorrow. >> all right, thank you so much. >> in the sierra, the snow pack is now higher than average for this time of year. >> it's been a while since we could say that, but our drought is far from over. >> abc 7 news was at the ski resort today as people were enjieing all of this new snow. recent storms have given california snow levels that we have not seen in several years with the electronic readings today showing the snow pack at

black lives matters national day of protest. organizers have dubbed it black christmas with the hopes to flood with goods. and then they moved on to the airport a few miles away blocking the highway. >> chp officers arrested eight women blocking the off ramp from southbound 101 just after noon today. the black lives malter protesters caused a traffic back-up nearly 7 miles. they were holding a sign that read justice for mario wood. san francisco police shot and killed earlier this month. >> we're learning more about what caused an accident involving a veteran san francisco police officer that occurred this morning. police tell us the driver of a van ran a red light while several officers in training were riding on molt cycles in that area. sky 7 hd was over the scene shortly afterwards. so this appears to be the video

of that plane crash that we saw earlier. so a non-related story there. but the police officer suffered non-life threatening injuries. drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor in that accident. >> a man accused of a d.u.i. crash that killed a driver in san jose went to court this afternoon for the first time. candles and flowers mark the road where carlos ran a red light and slammed into a car and killed the driver monday night. he hit other cars before and after that crash. he's charged with felony drunk driving and hit and run and was also booked on two outstanding warrant. >> heyward's 9/11 memorial received two new benches today. the memorial is dedicated to the victims of the 9/11 terror attacks, as well as three heyward police officers. that includes sergeant scott

lunger who was shot during a rup teen traffic stop over the summer. >> a family is filing a federal lawsuit to have the teen ruled legally alive. he was ruled brain dead two years ago. she's now on a ventlator at a new jersey hospital. the suit requests the federal court order the restoration of fundamental constitutional rights and declare she is not brain dead, according to criteria established under california law. her mother says they want to come back to california to be near loved one-on-ones. >> a north bay babysitter is under arrest, accused of killing an 18-month-old baby that she was caring for. shook the baby boy and then dropped him on the floor. an autopsy showed the baby suffered severe brain injury. >> police are asking for your help tracking down a man caught on camera stealing packages from a home.

the they felt happened in broad day light. surveillance footage showed the man taking up two packages. he was captured on another home surveillance system just a few blocks away. >> did you happen to see that fire ball in the sky last night? aparentally, it was russian space debris. people saw it all across california, arizona and nevada. we're told it was a russian sl 4 rocket booster. the rocket was launched on monday. we have some images posted by witnesses on social media with some speculating that it was a meteor. russia's federal space agency has not yet commented on what happened. >> still ahead here on abc 7 news at 4:00, the holiday travel rush from the airports to the roads. what you can expect over the next few days. >> plus, there are more problems for those hover boards. new places you won't be allowed to take these pop you lar gadgets. >> and a very special popular

. traffic was light in some parts of the bay area today. not right now and not in the skyway, downtown san francisco is basically gridlock in both directions. i'm not sure what was worse, getting into that area or getting out.

but where ever you're going right now, it is really, really slow. >> yeah, it was madness today. this is a look at 101 southbound. and, ablg which youly, it's moving nicely in both directions. it's just southbound that, you know, is usually slow around this time. now, lots of people will be hitting the road over the next few days. 100 million people across the u.s. are traveling this holiday season. that's the most ever according to triple a. >> they all appear to be on the sky way right now. a look at some of what you can expected out there. >> it can be a dog-eat-dog world out there. especially if you're traveling two days before christmas. but the boston terrier and their human companion, it was smooth sailing. >> two-legged travelers saw nothing but on time flight.

more than 91 million people across the u.s. will travel by car. traffic will, of course, be a major issue. so will snow. the lake tahoe area got three feet of the white stuff in just 24 hours. >> one big perk is the lowest gas prices in about 7 years. nationwide u it's $2 a gallon. at this safe way station, the sign says $2.49 a gallon. but with your grocery store discount, some filled up for as little as $2.09 a gallon.

>> a popular holiday gift item raising safety concerns nationwide is now hitting another roadblock. it's now banned at several universities after ten hover boards in nine states caught fire, airlines decided to ban them. now, santa clara university as well as george washington university in d.c. are banning hover boards from campuses. there's a new law that you should also know about that applies to scooters and skate boards, as well. starting january 1, you have to be 16 years old or older to ride one in public. you have to wear a helmet. you can only ride them on specified bikeways and highways and you cannot ride them on sidewalks, roadways or trails. >> the international ski federation is banning camera drones from its world cup races.

look at that. it missed the 18-year-old skier by inches. he did manage to continue his run. >> it is official, signs were put up today around the golden gate bridge warning visitors that drones are a security risk and also could cause an accident. >> tonight, there's a community meeting about the proposed whole foods in san francisco. a 19,000 square foot store. it would be the first 365 markt in the bay area. it's a smaller, more affordable version of the regular whole foods. this is the third idea proposed for the site. neighbors shot down plans to put a housing complex.

froszty mornings continuing right on into the weekend. all kinds of wintry travel conditions to our north and to our east. let's focus on the zirks erra. we expected 1 to 2 feet of nud snow. levels will be down to 2500 feet. and as we look ahead to about 4 clk friday morning, its's going to be a bright christmas with about 17 inches of snow expected. this proeching storm is a number two on our storm impact scale. here in the bay area, in the south bay, gusts to 45 miles per hour. snow levels here will be down to 2,000 feet. we'll see showers becoming waves

of rain by tomorrow morning. sweeping north to south and east by early tomorrow morning. 6:00 a.m., we'll see rain reaching down the south bay and east bay. and snow is possible over the mt. hamilton area. tomorrow evening, cold air will be accompanies this storm. rain fall totals we project will range from about a quart every of an inch to a third of an inch. we have king tidings still through the end of the week. tides will reach near 7 feet in height which could complicate things with a little localized flooding. low temperatures will range from low to mid 40s. tomorrow's high, generally low to mid 50s under rainy, windy conditions. here's the seven day forecast. sunny skies, chilly conditions.

here are the headlines now at 4:30. tense moments for passengers on a southwest airline. sky 7 hd shows the plane returning to oakland for an emergency landing after the pilot was alerted to a problem with the landing gear. the plane did land safely and the airline is rerouting all passengers who were on that flight. a glitch caused by a computer used by 9-1-1 operators for two hours yesterday. we first heard this problem yesterday. tweeting operators had to use a pencil and paper to take down the information. and at 5:00, she'll show you how that impact emergency response. a stand against gun violence along with his daughter, riley.

abc 7 news reportered david louis lookings at how the nba is getting both praise and criticism. >> also, severe weather is having a big impact on holiday travel. in the south, strong winds killed one person when a tree fell on a hougs in arkansas. authorities are warning people to stay off the roads in some areas. abc news reporter reports the weather problems that made getting home to family a nightmare for some. >> with the holiday travel rush begin. >> it is very crowded today. airports are packed across the country. >> i'm standing in a line about a mile long. >> to do is the busiest travel day on the roads and skies this holiday season. abds it's not off to a great start. with one to three hour flight delays in new york, detroit, new jersey and philadelphia. >> delayed.

southbound on 680, not too bad. your northbound traffic is a little more jammed up right now. >> a woman charged with intentionally ramming a car on the vegas strip. she did not enter a plea today. her three-year-old daughter was in the car at the time of the crash. one person died, more than 30 others were injured in sunday night's crash. >> the man who admitted to killing three people at a colorado planned parenthood wants to represent himself in court. he told the judge he wants to defend hoichls. he was charged with 179 counts including first-degree murder, atempted murder and assault. >> the new york city police department sentenced to help with security. the first-time ever that uniformed new york police officers have been on duty in a foreign country. more visitors are expected to visit st. peter's square than usual.

it's about a duck and senior center that battled and won. looifr outside the senior resident. wayne? >> the story began and ended at bellow gardens. it's about juanita, a mallard who got stuck between good intentions and federal laws. >> we begin this story with a mad paparazzi style dash. a rush to catch pictures of a duck that got caught one too many times already. remember juanita? she began when a little hatchling rescued from the street by senior citizens. they came to love her. but when juaniat arksz flew away, the complications kicked in. that nonprofit could not send juanita home because federal law does not allow wild birds to become pets. >> this is very challenging.
