broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. >> you just stop right now. >> cell phone video shows a b.a.r.t. police officer takes a man into custody. police say that man shot and injured another b.a.r.t. officer in heyward. good evening and merry christmas. abc 7 news reporter is live at the heyward b.a.r.t. station with the story tonight. >> well, dan, you can machblg these witnesses were really shaken up. they hear these gunshots on the holiday. just less than an hour ago, we heard from b.a.r.t. police including the suspect in all of this had used a stolen gun to shoot the police officer. also, that he was in a u-haul with plates that had been swapped. and, finally, we learned that the suspect has a prior record including burglary and drug charges. >> it's excitement. but too much excitement when you have gunshots in the neighborhood. >> the 15-year-old was enjoying

christmas when they say they heard gun shots. >> if gary were a kid my age. >> outside, they discovered a b.a.r.t. police officer shot. palmer took this video. >> you just be quiet. you just stop right now. >> he's just trying to get up. >> according to b.a.r.t. police, officers saw a suspicious person in a u-haul with a broken window. he told police his name was charles getting, a man police say is on searchable probation. >> when the officer asked him to put his arms on his head, he reached to his waistband and pulled a weapon. >> reporter: he and his dad focused on the officer shot. witnesses estimate they heard as many as six gunshots. it is unclear how many bullets hit the officer or the suspected. >> what appeared to be the

suspect's shoes, clothing and backpack remained on the scene after the shooting. >> i was just in shock just to see it. >> alex mart nez was driving past b.a.r.t. at the time. >> i was, like, 25 feet away. definitely, they're aiming towards the b.a.r.t. garage. >> helping an officer was instink which you. >> it's something you have to do, you know. >> according to officials, that b.a.r.t. officer has been treated at the hospital and released. as for the suspect, officials say that he was in surgery and he's now in stable condition. the officer thachs shot, according to officials, has just under five years experience and the other b.a.r.t. police officer that shot the suspect has about ten years experience. we've learned that both officers were wearing body cameras. >> all right, melanie, thanks very much. in pacifica, this is all that's left of two cars.

two people sadly died in this accident when the driver going the wrong way on highway one plowed head on into an uber car. investigators say the wrong-way driver and the uber passenger, a man in his mid 20s were killed. miraculously, the uber drooicher suffered only minor injuries. the passenger in the ubber car was not wearing a seat belt. >> i couldn't imagine myself or other family members. but, yes, we had a very tragic incident this morning. >> very, very sad, obviously, on christmas. drugs and alcohol have not been ruled out. the victim's identity have not been released. a motorcycle rider who left sheriff's deputies on a peninsula was arrested after crashing his bike. there you see it. it happened this afternoon in redwood city. deputies say the rider was wanted for a felony warntd. the rider led officers on a

high-speed chase through several residential neighborhoods. the rider was not hurt. >> power crews had a very busy day today. cleaning up a mess left behind by powerful winds yesterday. >> locals suspect it was a tornado across the neighborhood. the national wealther service says they are still investigating. >> we haven't been able to see any visual confirmation of the tornado. there's a couple people in the apartment complex. the winds were real strong, but they didn't see any evidence. >> another tornado came down yesterday near fulsome lake. it traveled across about 8 miles in eldorado and amador counties. >> a good time for skiers and snow borders to be sure. this is video from our heavenly camera. the ski resort reports 24 inches of new snow in just the past 24 hours. back here in the bay area,

temperatures as low as the 20s. let's go to abc 7 news weather anchor. >> this morning's lows dropped to, check them out, 28, 27 at napa, 31 at livermore. many other locations within the freezing mark. we are in the grips of a three-day cold snap. overnight will be very cold, as well. in effect, midnight tonight. 9:00 tomorrow morning for virtually all of the bay area. lows in the mid 20s to low 30s. with conditions on this, damage to plants is a possibility as well as the risk of hypothermia. i'll shoi shw you how low the l will go. >> some families in san carlos certainly did not envision

spending their christmas morning without power and cleaning up damage after a big tree came crashing down on their homes yesterday. the tree came down on winding way near windsor drive late last night. it crushed two cars into the house, power lines were brought down as well, knocking out electricity. the family lives nearby and they are just refusing to let the downed trees spoil their christmas. >> why not, man, it's christmas? just because there's no power and it's not warm. we had a fireplace, you know, and we have a gas stove so we could have breakfast and a little hot chocolate. >> pg&e restored power this afternoon, but recent weather may be to blame for that tree coming down. as you well know, basketball is a christmas tra kigs. the warriors are now 28-1 after winning the nba finals rematch against lebron james and the cavaliers.

some of dub nation supporters came from far away to catch the nba chant. jonathan bloom is there live. >> fans came to see an awesome game and that's what they god. it's a good thing they got their money's worth because they came from all over the globe for the nba finals rematch. on the court, it was 32 lucky kids who got christmas presents from the team. but for thousands of fans, the best of all. >> this is your christmas celebration. >> you brought me tickets to the game? >> they drove all night from sabsan diego to get here.

3,000 meals to those in need. the team has been practicing, but nebraska's coach says they've been really blasting them. >> this might be the most special thing they do outside of the box, where they get a chance to help somebody else. that's always the most rewarding things that anybody can do. >> ucla players were helping out. the team helped prepare food trays. the kickoff between nebraska and ucla is tomorrow. and some very special helpers worked this christmas day to make sure people got their holiday mail delivered. the u.s. post office works hard every season making sure that all of those christmas cards and presents are delivered on time. today was no exception, at least for priority express mail. abc 7 news was at the willow

this flooding is not from recent rain. it's a water main break that sent thousands of gallons of water gushing down towards steiner and union street. one took advantage of the rushing waterer to clean the street. the area is just washing some of the dirt away. >> it took a water company more than an hour to shut off the water. that's because they had to turn off several valves. the stores may be closed

today, but some san francisco kids still did some school shopping. abc 7 news and the western edition as hundreds of kids got to pick out the toys. they left the o'doules holiday drive. the restaurant dropped off 4,000 items for today's give away. >> and i got something for like signs. >> each collide was able to pick out three toys. isn't that nice. they were dribted to several bay area organizations. a south bay ministry brought the christmas spirit to the san jose homeless today. as it served up hot meals under the highway 87 underpass, the group has been working with the

homeless for 25 years now. they also distributed sleeping bags, blankets and clothes. well, moving on, anyone can dial a wrong number, right? but it's not often done from space. british astronaut tweeted out an apology today. i'd like to apologize to the lady i just called by mistake by saying hello, is this planet earth. not a prank call, just a wrong number. he arrived at the international space station on december 15th. he's spending six months there conducting science experiments. >> we want to thank our abc 7 now community for sharing our holiday pictures. adrian shared this picture on instagram snuggling by the fire. and a real event today, merry christmas, full moon this morning. it's the first full moon on christmas since 1977.

rain mainly in the north bay sunday evening. it looks like it's going to swing on through. here's a look at our rainfall chances here in san francisco. for the next seven days, about a 60% chance. 10% chance on monday and near zero for the remainder of the week. it's goirng to be a dry pattern next week. highs tomorrow on the seasonably cool side. up to 54 at oakland, 54 at napa and santa rosa. there's that free still again. early tomorrow morning and cold sunday morning. temperatures will moderate the next few morning. there's a sliegt chance of rain sunday night into early monday morning. sunny and dry next week. milder toward the end of the week just in time for new year's day.

this was the final game for the silver and black. tried to make it a story, but finished with a chance to win the contest and got the ball on the double reverse. he was stoched for a three-yard loss. >> that would have been an amazing way to end it. i said man, just throw it up, i've got your back. but i think he did the right thing. >> i wanted to, but they played it as well as you would played it. and what would i have looked like if i had thrown an interception. >> that's right. when it doubt, don't throe it. only 5-7. meanwhile, the bruins have a chance to finish the year 9-4. >> it would give us a chance to win 38 games in four years. but more than anything, it's just an opportunity to play the game toegt as a team and test

news at 11:00. a nativity scene is drawing interest for a nativity detail. it's 15 scenes including life on the nile all the way until jesus was 12 years old. some 230 figures were reported from spain but the scenery was all hand-made by church goers. >> you see them by a group of volunteers, who started back in july. a basic styrofoam, masking tape and wire. >> more than 5,000 people have visited this nativity scene. you can check it out until january 3rd at our lady of peace church which is in santa clara. that is our report. we appreciate your time here on this christmas night. hope you have a wonderful day with the family. happy holidays. we'll be back at 11:00.
