broadcast center, this is abc7 news. >> a gruesome discovery at an east bay bart station. authorities find a body in a u haul connected to the man who opened fire at a police officer. good evening. i'm dan ashley. ama daetz has the night off. authorities retrieved the body in the u haul about 8:00 p.m. at the hayward bart station. that's the same place where earlier today police say a man opened fire on a bart police officer wounding him. abc7 news reporter is live with the details. sergio? >> the discovery of the body in the rear of that rental u haul truck is the latest twist in what you mentioned was an already disturbing story on this christmas day. we watched as police officers pull a shovel, gas canisters,

sandbags from this rental truck and the county coroner collected the body of a dead man. this is a story that started this morning when two bart police officers spotted something that didn't look right. >> one officer noticed they were in a u haul with a smashed out broken window and the suspect was walking away when he approached. >> the suspect is 28-year-old charles getting who is on probation. police were about to search him when he pulled a gun who started to fire hitting one of the officer. >> the officer produced a weapon and fired several times. the two officers took mr. getting into custody. >> this is a photo shot by a witness. they saw what happened and began helping the officer who was hit in the exchange of gunfire. >> we were taking off his jacket to see what happened. my dad got the gloves like to take off his shirt and see where the bullet landed. >> the policeman was hit in

the arm and treated and released from the medical center. it is the same hospital where the suspect was taken. tonight he is facing several charges including attempted murder of a police officer and it is not clear how he may be connected to the dead body found in the u hule -- u -- u haul. breaking news in palo alto where police have a huge area blocked off after a shooting involving an officer. this is a live picture from the area. we are told the officer was not injured. it is unclear where it was struck. we whim -- we will update you on abc7 news. a woman walking along north street was injured by a hit-and-run driver. it happened before 6:30. the victim was taken to the hospital to be treated. her condition is unknown. the driver of the car has not

been located. a motorcycle rider who lead police on the peninsula on a chase was arrested after crashing his bike. it happened in redwood city. police say the rider was wanted for a felony warrant. they lead officers on a high speed chase before crashing. he was not hurt. a different story in pacifica. 24 is all that is left of two cars. two people sadly died in this accident when a driver going the wrong way on highway 1 plowed head on into an uber car. the collision happened about 2:30 this morning near paw loma avenue. investigators say the wrong way driver and the uber passenger, a man in his mid20s, were killed. thankfully the uber driver suffered only minor injury. the passenger in the uber car was not wearing a seatbelt. now look carefully at this surveillance video captured at 3:00 this morning. a san francisco optometry office, police say the man in the santa hat is trying to break into the business with a

set of keys that he stole hours earlier from a hillsboro home he burglarized. police say the thief went into an unlocked car parked on san remondo road and he used the garage door opener in the car to get into the house where he stole several itemses including the keys to the family business. >> it is unfortunate this grinch came along today. again the one thing you can do is remove available items from your vehicle, any items at all. >> it is not clear whether he took anything. they are compiling more surveillance video clips to identify who this man is. there is mass destruction after a tornado swept across the city. houses were blown into the street. a church was heavily damaged by the twister. rescue workers are working to free them trapped under the debris on this night. several people were injured. parts of the south were hit hard by severe weather in the

last 24 hours. it has been unseasonably warm in many parts of the country. let's turn to the weather here now. what a beautiful christmas day. here is a live look. we are finally drying out tonight after a fair amount of rain. the temperatures are plummeting. it is chilly out there. here is abc7 news weather anchor. >> the cold snap has us in its grips. here is a look at live doppler 7hd. we have a freeze warning from midnight to 9:00 a.m. for the entire bay area with exception to the coast and san francisco. overnight lows will drop in the midto upper 20s in some locations. of course with the temperatures this low there is the danger with freeze damage to sensitive plants. already the temperatures are headed downward. right now 34 degrees in napa and 2 degrees away from freezing and numerous other locations have temperature reading near the bay . i'll show you just how cold it will be overnight and how long

bay and all the bay area, this is abc7 news. police in hope, arkansas are treating a fire at the boyhood home of president bill clip -- bill clinton as an arson. the fire caused minor damage to the house. firefighters smelled gasoline when they first arrived. they say someone scrolled graffiti on the building. the national park service operates the site which was originally owned by clinton's grandparents. clinton lived in the home for parts of his childhood. some fed ex employees had to skip celebrations at home to deliver late packages today. drivers and handlers worked extra shifts to help the company manage late shi.es that did not arrive in time for christmas morning. bad weather at the memphis air hub ept kept packages grounded and they dealt with a surge in on-line shopping orders as well. santa had special helpers

in the south bay this morning. abc7 news was at the willow glen post office as dozens of letter carriers delivered and sorted the mail the plan was to deliver every piece of express priority mail to san jose this christmas day. all-around the bay area and all-around the world millions of people of course celebrated this christmas day. abc7 news has more on the christmas tradition and messages from leaders across the continent. >> from santa's singing in south korea to surfing in australia and even swimming in germany, christmas traditions came in many forms. the common theme was spreading smiles. this volunteers feeding the needy in italy. 33 years and counting. christmas cheers also took over country rocked by violence with parades in syria and prayers in bethlehem.

embassies and even china issuing a warning about a terror threat. abc news, new york. abc7 news was at the ellis hill hutch community center as hundred of kid got to pick their christmas presents today as part of the center's holiday toy give away. the restaurant dropped off more than 4,000 items for today's distribution. abc7 news was in st. anthony's dining hall this morning as nebraska football players helped hand out 3,000 meals to those in need. the players are in town for the foster farms bowl at levi stadium. the team has been practicing and sight seeing. but the coach said today ease dsh dash today's event will leave lasting memories. ucla players were helping out at glide memorial. they prepared the food trays. glide served 5,000 today. the kickoff for the foster farms bowl is tomorrow at 6:15

p.m. and a south bay ministry brought them to the homeless pop pop -- population. they caught up with the mercy mobile as they served up hot meals near coleman avenue. they have been working with the homeless for over 25 years now. they distributed sleeping bags, blankets and clothes. one of the best things in the bay area is that so many are volunteering and helping those less fortunate. the weather cooperated as well. it was beautiful in fact. spencer christian is here with a look ahead to the weekend. >> dan, more beautiful days ahead, but very cold overnights and early mornings coming our way. this night is one of them. here is a look at live doppler 7hd. clear skies and the temperatures are dropping. here is a live view from the tower camera looking out over san francisco it is 45 in the city and 41 across the bay. in oakland 40 in mountain view
