kgotv broadcast center this is abc 7 news. it is saturday, december 26th. good morning and thanks for waking up with us, i'm chris nguyen. let's start with the forecast, here is meteorologist lisa argen she's tracking live doppler 7 hd. >> it is clear and you know that by looking outside and you are probably feeling the chill. that's why we have another hour for our freeze warning where temperatures have dropped into the low 30s and hopefully you brought in those plants and pets because, boy, it was really cold, in fact, temperatures just beginning to recover right now, from our camera it's beautiful here in san francisco, going to be a gorgeous day with temperatures in the 50s, already the warmer locations at 45, but still 30s in mountain view and this is a frosty sierra nevada where it is 14 at the tahoe valley airport. a little snow in your future, we will talk about it and;kj when these temperatures are going to recover coming up. breaking news out of southern california this

morning, a stretch of the pa sefk coast highway in ventura is closed after a fast moving brush fire broke out last night. we are taking a live look out of ventura county, the fire has burned 1,100 acres along highway 101 and is threatening at least 35 homes. mandatory evacuations are in place for the solimar beach community, these images from a couple hours ago, the cause of the fire is unknown at this time. stick with abc 7 news for updates on this story and be sure to follow us on twitter @abc7newsbayarea. now to breaking news out of the north bay, a health center in guerneville is gajd after a fire ripped through the building. the fire started at the russian river health center. firefighters arrived to see flames gusting flew the front of the center and coming out the elevator shaft. there is extensive damage that will cost at least half a million dollars to fix. fortunately they were able to save some computers and medicine supplies, however, no word on any injury.

developing news out of palo alto this morning. police are investigating an officer-involved shooting. it happened just before 9:30 last night near forest and middlefield. police say they received a call of a disturbance at a home on forest avenue where a person wanted to hurt someone. when officers arrived, the suspect charged at them, armed with a knife. the officers then opened fire. paramedics rushed the suspect to the hospital where they later tied. no officers were hurt in the incident. police are investigating how a suspect who opened fire on a bart police officer may be connected to a body found inside a u-haul at an east bay bart station. officials retrieved the bodies at the hayward bart station, that's the same place where police say a man opened fire on a bart police officer who was injured. abc 7 plus reporter sergio quintana has more. >> reporter: we watched as officers pulled several tarps

from this u-haul truck and the county coroner collected the body of a did man. >> one officer saw there was a u-haul with a smashed out broken window and the suls spect was walking away as he approached. >> reporter: the suspect is 28-year-old charles goetting who is on probation. police were go about to search him when he pulled a gun and started firing, hitting one of the officers. >> my officer produced his weapon and shot mr. bet goetting several times and he was taken into custody. >> this is the photo shot by a witness of emergency crews helping goetting. mauricio palmer and his father saw what happened. >> we were taking off his jacket to see what happened, my dad got the gloves maybe like to take off his shirt and see if -- like where the bullet landed. >> reporter: the policeman was hit in the arm and treated and released from eden valley medical center, the same hospital where suspect goetting was taken, he's facing several

charges including attempted murder of a police officer and it's not clear how he may be connected to the dead body found in the u-haul truck he died walking away from. sergio quintana. in san jose police are looking for the driver of a car who hit and injured a woman who was walking along north first street, it happened near son ra avenue just before 6:30. police say the victim was taken to the hospital for treatment. at this time her condition is unknown. a motorcycle required who led police on a chase on the peninsula was arrested after crashing his bike. it happened yesterday afternoon in redwood city. police say the biker was wanted for a felony warrant. he held officer on a high speed chase before crashing. police tell us he was not injured. in pacifica this is all that was left of two cars, two people dried in this accident when a driver driving the wrong way

plowed head on into an uber car. investigators say the wrong-way driver as well as the uber passenger, a man in his mid 20s were both killed. the uber driver suffered only minor injuries. 9 chp believes the passenger in the uber car was knots wearing a seat belt. take a close look at this surveillance video captured at 3:00 yesterday morning at a san francisco optometry office. police say the man in the santa hut was trying to break into the business with a set of keys he stole hours earlier from a hillsborough home he burglarized. police said he went into a car parked in san raymundo and used the garage door opener to break into the home. >> it's unfortunate this grinch came along today and performed this act, but the one thing you can remove is remove any valuable items from your vehicle, any items at all. >> the burglar was able to enter the office. hillsborougher police say they are compiling more surveillance

clips from the area to help identify the suspect. this morning there is mass destruction on the streets of birmingham, alabama, after a tornado swept through the city. houses were blown into the street, a church was also heavily damaged by the twister. rescue workers working to free residents trapped under debris. parts of the south have been hit hard by severe weather in the last 24 hours. and that's not flooding from the recent rain, a water main break turned these streets in san francisco into a river yesterday. the break happened on green and fill more streets, that spent thousands of gallons of washing gushing. one resident took advantage of the wurk water to clean the street. >> we have had such a drought, the area hasn't been terribly clean like it used to, i was washing some of the dirt away. >> it took the water company more than an hour to shut it off. that's because they had to turn off several valves to avoid more

rupture. 8:06. you saw it right here on abc 7, the nba finals rematch between the warriors and cavaliers and once again the dubs came out on top at jonathan bloom explains, fans came from far and wide, even from the other side of the world to catch the game on this christmas game. >> reporter: on the court it was 32 lucky kids who got christmas presents from the team but for thousands of fans the game was the best present of all. >> this is your christmas celebration. >> yes, my baby bought me tickets to the game, she totally bamboozled me. >> reporter: they drove all night from san diego to get here, but fans came from much farther than that. >> about 1400 kilometers. >> reporter: where is that? >> australia. >> came all the way from new zealand. >> they even came from the north pole. >> it was a very long way but i was in the neighborhood last night so i got a room and just hung out out. >> all for an epic grudge match.

time right now is 8:13 on your saturday morning. we continue to follow breaking news out of ventura county. a massive brush fire has shut down part of the pacific coast highway, moments ago we saw a tractor carving out a fire line, pretty close to the fire. the latest numbers, 1,100 acres have burned around at least 35 homes are threatened. parts of the area also currently being evacuated. we will bring you any new developments online at abc7news.com. meanwhile, develop news, a brush fire near melbourne,

australia has destroyed more than 100 homes, 1,600 residents and tourists have been evacuated, firefighters are struggling to keep the fire under control. the fire started last saturday, but strong winds and high temperatures in recent days have intensified the fire which has burned nearly 5,500 acres so far. again, out of melbourne, australia, organizers of the falls music and arts festival may cancel the event because of the fire, more than 15,000 people were expected to attend that event. a two-alarm fire at a mosque in houston, texas, has caused major damage. the fire started yesterday afternoon at the islamic society of greater houston. a pharmacy next door also had smoke damage. the cause of the fire has not been determined, but officials believe there are multiple origins of the fire and because of that they are investigating it as suspicious. some who pray at the mosque fear it was an act of hate. no injuries have been reported. police in hope, arkansas, are treating a fire at the boyhood home of president bill

clinton as an arson. the fire caused minor damage to the home. firefighters smelled gasoline when they arrived and investigators say someone sprawled graft tee on to the building. the national park service operates and maintains the site which was originally owned by clinton's grandparents. he lived in the home for parts of his childhood. some fed ex employees had to skip their christmas celebrations at home to deliver late packages yesterday. drivers and handlers worked extra hours to help the company manage late shipments that did not arrive in time for christmas morning. bad weather at the company's memphis air hub kept a number of flights grounded this week. fed ex also delgt with a surge in deliveries from online shopping orders. santa had some very special helpers in the south bay yesterday morning, abc 7 news was at the willow glen post office in san jose as dozens of letter carriers volunteered to sort and deliver the mail. the post office told us the plan was to deliver every piece of house in san jose yesterday. if you thought you were done

>> we dwots a lot of stuff, presents for the kids and a bag of food. >> and i got something for like science, like in case you guys want to build anything. >> each child was able to pick out three toys, o'doul's collected more than 12,000 toys this holiday season, they were distributed to several bay area organizations. abc 7 news was at st. anthony's dining room as nebraska football players helped to hand out 3,000 meals to noise in need. the players are in town for tonight's foster bowl. nebraska's coach said yesterday's event will leave lasting memories. >> this might be the most special thing that they do outside of the box where they get a chance to help somebody else. that's always the most rewarding thing that anybody can do. while nebraska's players were at saipt anthony's ucla players were helping out at glides. they helped prepare the food trays and handed out the christmas meals.

they served about 5,000 lunches yesterday. kickoff for the foster forms bowl is at 6:15 tonight. the king tide should last through today in the north bay at nearly 7 feet this isn't the highest we have ever seen but this spot along shoreline highway in mill valley was almost completely under water this week. some gardeners are concerned about their plants but experts say all this water and wet soil actually ins lates plants and protects them from bitter cold weather. speaking of which, it sure is chilly out there in some parts of the bay area. >> yeah, i had to pull over a couple times this morning and really get out there and scrape my windshield. i was in one of those lucky spots where it was just so cold, some of you have already experienced typical morning in the 40s, live doppler 7 hd shows you how clear it is, there are no clouds out there and it is zero in truckee, that gives you an idea of how cold and temperatures running a little below average in spots, particularly in san jose and

parts of the east bay this afternoon. we should see about 60 for a high in san jose and we are looking at numbers in the 50s, a little wind until the upper elevations allowing for some mixing and warming things up just a bit. 45 downtown, 41 oakland, 46 mountain view, san jose 41 for you. not too bad but you get into morgan hill, parts of the peninsula, wood sighed and it's cold, 45 half-moon bay, but we are still looking at these numbers in the north bay and parts of our east bay valleys, concord and livermore which are very cold, how about that 32 in novato and 33 in concord, livermore you are coming up a few days, in santa rosa 34, fairfield you have had a little bit of wind that's why you are at 42 now, it's going to be a cool afternoon but we will have tons of sun and if you've got a flight out on the peninsula it's going to look like this all day long. mountain view should see highs in the upper 50s, you will be shy of that today but it will be dry. tomorrow a different story with

a chance of showers coming into play and after that it's a dry bat pattern not only for the week ahead that takes us through the end of 2015 and hoping for more rain obviously into january. so for oakland today you're cool and tomorrow dropping another couple degrees as well as monday, but look at the rest of the upcoming workweek. upper 50s and not only will we have mild conditions, the old chance of rain for oakland and san francisco comes in tomorrow and there's about 60% chance it's going to take all day to get here so everyone will pretty much enjoy some sunshine for the bulk of the day, but by 1:00, 2:00, we've got the clouds and rain in cloverdale, santa rosa by later afternoon it's all around the bay area, very light, scattered in the south bay, but through the evening hours and the later overnight hours we still have rain. the chance of rain anyway. and that will bring anywhere from about a tenth to two tenths of most spots, but some areas where you have a heavier cell or more continuous rainfall you could see about maybe a third in

janet jackson is postponing her upcoming tour, the five-time grammy winner says her unbreakable tour will be on hold

so that she can have an unspecified surgical procedure done. she's posted on had her facebook page that she needs to have the surgery soon so the tour will resume in the spring. the 2016 leg was supposed to start back up again in denver on january 9th and continue until the end of june, however, all performance dates will be rescheduled. jackson promises that current ticket holders will be honored in a special way when the new dates are announced. the second time is the charm for a "star wars" fan after her mother accidentally misplaced a gift for him three decades ago. this x wing pilot luke skywalker action figure went missing 30 years ago but a mom found it still in the box with the original price tag. instead of a cheap stocking did you ever it's a highly sought after "star wars" collectible that could be worth hundreds of dollars, however, the son says he would never sell it because no amount of money is worth its value to him as a gift from her mom. steph curry's wife shared this photo on her instagram page yesterday saying, merry

saturday morning. thanks for waking up with us. we're off to a chilly start across the bay, here is meteorologist lisa argen tracking the conditions where you live. >> with the sunshine and the bay you folks are a little bit warmer from san francisco to san jose this morning and numbers in the 40s for you. mountain view still stuck at 36, 38 morgan hill and at the coast 45. frosty temperatures in lake tahoe, 0 in truckee right now, a slight chance of snow showers into monday. on this panel we have the freezing cold temperatures from 33 in concord, windchill factor into play in novato, santa rosa, the central coast, watsonville, monterey all chilly now. it's going to warm up to the low

to mid 50s, a little shy of average. we will talk about when we warm up to near average temperatures and the rest of 2015 coming up. now to the extreme weather hitting the southern part of the debates. a christmas tornado touched down in alabama creating new damage and flooding prompting the governor to declare a state of emergency. phillip menna has the latest. >> reporter: overnight a christmas day tornado tears through birmingham, alabama. this field of debris and shattered wood all of that remains of these homes. along the two mile stretch of destruction. raging floodwaters forcing others from their homes. the outbreak of severe weather follows three days of havoc across tennessee, alabama and mississippi, which claimed 15 lives and injured dozens more as spring like storms marched through the south. holly springs, mississippi, spending christmas day digging

two big battles. abc news reporter devin dwyer has the details. >> reporter: on a busy christmas weekend not a candidate was stirring except for donald trump, arriving with the secret service detail to this florida episcopal church. >> trump is a member, we see him occasionally, but he is there today. >> reporter: the candidates took a break to spend time with their families. some tweeting these holiday portraits, five weeks from the first ballots of the 2016 election it's still a packed republican field. 13 candidates still in the race. in iowa that critical first caucus state trump and ted cruz are neck and neck in the most recent polls. in new hampshire the second to vote it's not even close among republicans, trump out front by double digits. many voters say they're still making up their minds, 58% of republicans nationwide said they have not decided which candidate to support, 41% say they have.

and they explore options for a new home. according tour media partner the bay area news group a city report submitted last month con fives five responsible sites with the warriors likely moving to san francisco and the raiders potentially moving to l.a. sports fans want the a's to stay put. city leaders have not ebt kmed on their preference for a new sight, but the five sites identified in the report include two on the campus of laney college, the u.s. postal service facility in west oakland, the howard terminal near jack london square and the brooklyn basin off interstate 880. families are range ri after a north bay little league baseball field is set to close. paul's field was built in 1958, owe fibls say a group bought the property to build an aquatic complex and spare the baseball field but now the group wants to rip the field out to build a housing kpl ex that would help finance the pool. families are fighting to save the field. president obama and the first lady spent christmas day with service members and their

families at the marine corps case in hawaii. the president thanked them for their hard work and said their efforts to help keep americans free and strong is never taken for granted. he also called the six u.s. troops killed in a suicide bombing in afghanistan brave and outstanding. spending the holidays in hawaii has been an annual tradition for the first family. happening today, an east bay group will hold a unit in the community peace rally after a woman was charged for allegedly throwing coffee on a muslim man at lake chabot park, the eden area interfaith council says it hopes to bring freedom of vel onto light. the organization wants to demonstrate that people of different faiths can learn and live together in peace. the rally starts at noon at the castro valley bart station on north bridge avenue. still ahead, it's been a stormy week but not all parts of the obamacare do the the same level of spoke soaking. we look at south bay reservoirs and find out why the recent rant

19,000 acre feet of water yet only it's 13% of capacity. the rainfall is getting absorbed by the drought parched soil. the chair of the valley water district board says rainfall across the state is crucial since only a fraction of the supply is captured and stored here. >> it's stored in san lewis 1$ reservoir, a lot of its stored in1svñ shasta dam and oroville . so our george locally is small and don't forget because of the seismic issue with anderson we can't store as much water there as we'd like. >> reporter: when you look at mefls of percolation ponds, water is moved around to recharge underground storage. >> this water comes of lexington. they started refilling it mid summer to recharge the groundwater aquifer. >> reporter: the prospect of rain and run that you have has steve ol ms optimistic that they will see salmon and steel heads

spursz seven game win streak 88-84, san antonio still 25-6 overall. the college football bowl season resumes today with six games on tap, including the foster farms bowl at levi stadium. ucla is a 6 1/2 point favorite to beat nebraska. the cornhuskers openly went 7-5 but lost four games in the final seconds of regulation or overtime. the bruins have a chance to finish the season 9-4. >> it would give us a chance to win 38 games in four years which would be a ucla record but more than anything it's just an opportunity to play another game together as a team and test ourselves against one of the great teams in college football. don't forget you can watch the college football semi-finals on espn new year's eve, oklahoma and clemson in the orange bowl followed by michigan state and alabama in the cotton bowl. it all leads up to the national championship game january 11th on espn. that is sports for saturday

mother nature may be bringing a couple inches 6 snow late sunday into monday but it's been awfully cold and the snow pack is building, it's better than what it was last year, but we are still looking for some more wet weather ahead our way tomorrow, but nothing too exciting. 34 novato as well as santa rosa with 33 concord, livermore sitting at 36 degrees and from emeryville it is sunny out there and you will enjoy 50s today. temperatures high of average and tomorrow you will see sunshine for the bulk of the day before the clouds increase and bring us some rain throughout the afternoon, the evening hours and then a dry pattern sets up for the rest of the year. hopefully 2016 will bring us more storms, but for oakland it will be all about the warm up for the week ahead. the highs have just been in the low 50s the past few days and with still cool weather ahead it's going to take until the end of the week until you see numbers come up to more comfortable readings. san jose what about rainfall, your best chance will be

tomorrow with a 50% chance. you know what that means, it's not going to be too great and if you dpo see any at all it should be about a tenth of an inch. through tomorrow, 10:00, we're clear, cold, by the afternoon we have clouds advancing into the east bay. the rain stays to the north bay. by the middle of the afternoon it's more widespread and by the evening hours we could see it in emeryville, castro valley, hayward, san jose, you will see spotty showers and maybe a heavier downpour here or there up in the north bay. otherwise it pushing through through the overnight hours and by monday morning you can see still some cells off the coast, but rainfall amounts anywhere from just a couple hundredths in livermore and concord to 2/10 in napa, a tenth in san jose and nearly that in san francisco. maybe a little bit more in parts of the north bay. so afternoon highs today under sunny skies and those light northerly winds, boy, it's going
