gunshots and just rapid fire. we were scared. >> gunfire breaks the silence of a quiet christmas night in palo alto. terrifying neighbors as police open fire on a suspect they say was armed. hello, everyone. that shooting happened lanight another a home for people with drug and enemy health issues on fourth avenue in palo alto. we're there live with the latest on the investigation.

>> reporter: the treatment center is a large house that sits in the middle of the block not too far from palo alto's downtown. staff members will not comment. one woman says the suspect was shot because he refused to drop a butter knife. this residential health facility looks like any other house on this palo alto street. it takes in men and women with mental health issues for treatment programs. christmas night, police were called here for a disturbance. they shot and killed the suspect. they say he was armed with a knife and charged at officers. >> just rapid fire. and i'm shocked. >> neighbors describe the center as transitional housing. >> have there been problems before? >> nothing like this.

>> most of the people there are very respectful and are very good neighbors. >> reporter: a resident told me the man who was shot was a patient and residents say he was threatening other residents with a butter knife. >> one of the young men that was pacing just on the side path there, just went up and just gave him a hug because he was -- appeared to be in shock, wasn't saying anything. >> reporter: the suspect died after being taken to a hospital. district attorney's office is investigating. in palo alto, abc7 news. >> an independent police review authority is investigating an officer-involved shooting that left two people dead in chicago. those officers were responding to a domestic disturbance call on the city's west side, around 4:30 this morning. they were confronted by a cam bat tenant

subject. one officer shod and called 55-year-old mother of five and a 19-year-old college student. the student's mother described her son as challenged. >> he was having a mental situation. sometimes he'll get a little loud. but not violent. i was just with my son on christmas. i mean, i talked to him. i told him that he had to control his temper, but he wasn't violent. >> both victims were african-american. jacques police have not disclosed the race of the officer or how long that officer has been with the department. san francisco firefighters made a citizens arrest today after witnessing a woman break a car window and steal a bag. we were in the soul of market neighborhood writ happened this morning. the fire crew chased the woman down, called police and held her until officers arrived. chp officers shut down a portion of foothill road in

pinole what authorities investigated a suspicious package. the sheriff's office bomb squad was called to the scene. no word on what they determined that package to be and if it was detonated. the temperature dropped below freezing in parts of the bay area overnight. roads in orip da were also icy this morning. drivers there and up in wine country had to be extra careful on the roads. let's take a live look outside from the east bay hills camera. you can see blue skies there, but the bay area -- its clear but very chilly out there, our meteorologist drew tuma has more with live doppler 7hd. >> it's a pretty picture but temperatures are dropping to cool numbers. currently 49 in san francisco, cool 42 in livermore, 47 in napa, 50 in sap -- san carlos. the temperatures will drop below freezes overnight.

in san francisco the temperatures will drop into the upper 20s and lower 30s. so bring in the pets, protect the plants and remember to check on the elderly. then behind the cold a weak system moves in on sunday, a minimum one on the storm impact scale. we'll talk more about that in the full accuweather forecast. >> with the rain stopped, crews are working hard to patch leaks on the uss hornet. the retired aircraft carrier's flight deck has leaks. officials with the foundation that owns it want to fix the problem before winter rains powered by el niño cause even bigger problems. crews will lay down a coating that should keep it waterproof for the next few years. millions of americans will face extreme weather conditions tonight. in alabama, a tornado destroyed several homes and strong winds continue to be a problem. just a few hours south of that damage, water flooded dozens of

homes and forced nearly 200 roads to close. 17 deaths have been connected to storms in the south this week, and in the southwest, freezing rain and snow are on the way. some areas could see up to two feet of snow. right now in dallas, there's a tornado warning. people are being told to stay indoors. evacuation order has been lifted near an explosive fire in ventura county last night. it quickly spread in size to more than 1200 acres, forcing people from their homes. the flames have moved a. from residential areas but it's only 10% contained. abc news reporter kendra witworth is in ventura county with the latest. >> oh, my god. we're driving through fire. >> a holiday nightmare treated driver thursday southern california claim night. fast-moving flames creeping toward the 101 freeway. >> oh, my god. >> this is scary.

mark. once we're out of the cold tomorrow morning, we'll be tracking light showers. on storm impact scale this is a minimum one storm. light showers, less than a quarter inch of total rain and minimal snowfall in the sierra. so future weather takes you into sunday. sunday morning, 10:00 in the morning, mixture of sun and clouds, scattered shower begins to pop up sunday afternoon and the threat will linger into sunday evening as well. hit or miss light showers and then move out monday morning, and by monday afternoon are back to brighter skies. in terms of total rainfall, minimal amounts of rain, less than a quart are inch, and most sports will get less than a tenth inch of rain. in terms of snowfall, not a blockbuster snowfall. one to three inches. this is a quick moving system and doesn't have a lot of moisture. so they have good snow pack in the sierra and this will just add to the atmosphere.
