that's concerning and especially if there is small children on there, that's really sad. >> moments of panic along san francisco's waterfront after a tour bus crash injures nine people. good evening, everyone. two of the nine injured are children. abc 7 news reporter lisa joins us live from where it happened. lisa what can you tell us about the passengers? >> reporter: caroline, first of all, the scene did clear a few hours ago and skid marks are still on the ground from where the bus stopped and there were 30 people on board when the bus was hit and all those passengers were sitting on the bottom level. the tour bus came to a screeching halt after police say the driver of this black suv

crashed into the double decker. >> the driver in a ford explorer made a sudden turn in front of the bus cutting the path off and the driver applied the brakes and we had impact to the bus and vehicle. >> reporter: the embarcadero lit up. people rushled out of restaurants to find out what was going on. >> there were a lot of police cars a lot of ambulances people being taken away on the stretchers and being put into the ambulance. >> reporter: some passengers were treated immediately on the sidewalk before being taken to three separate san francisco hospitals. the majority of the victims suffered minor injuries. the most severe was a broken ankle. the driver of the big bus and the driver of the suv were tested for drugs and alcohol. both passed. the general manager says the tour company's driver has a solid record. >> the driver is shaken up but totally fine.

>> reporter: veteran driver? >> been with us for a long time, yes, two years. >> reporter: the driver will be cited for making an improper lane change. tonight's crash comes more than a month after another accident involving a san francisco tour company. this week the california highway patrol released its findings and to the november 13th crash of a city sightseeing bus in union square. the chp sited the company for issues with the fleet and other issues, 20 people were hurt in that incident. now to those rapidly dropping temperatures tonight. a freeze warning is in effect throughout parts of the bay area. and this morning black ice covered part of tahoe's road. there were patches of ice off highway 24 and in lafayette it really looked like winter. homes had white rooftops this morning during some daring east

bay residents refused to let the cold stop them from celebrating the holidays. >> i'm freezing. it's very cold out here. but we're having a good time and the kids play. so wanted to stay inside. just want to celebrate winter right now. >> well the cold conditions also did not stop people from enjoying the winter ice rink in walnut creek today. let's head right to abc 7 news meteorologist drew tuma who is tracking those dropping temperatures. >> caroline, we dropped below freezing in spots already. look at the temperatures in the north bay. 31 and the freezing park, 34 in navado and widen the view fairfield chilly 30 and 35 in napa and san carlos at 39. that freeze warning goes into effect at midnight. the only exception san francisco and the coast upper 20s to low 30s. after we get rid of the cold tomorrow morning, we'll be

tracking a chance of light showers, minimal on the storm impact but we'll go hour by hour in future weather and show when to expect the sprinkle coming up. there is developing news out of north texas tonight. people are warned to take shelter as tornados and severe storms continue to rip through the dallas-fort worth area. this video shot just south of dallas shows the enormity of a funnel cloud each time lightning strikes. take a look at the destruction, at least five people are confirmed dead at this hour. mainly from storm related traffic accidents. the severe weather death toll stands at 22 across the south in less than a week. we'll have the latest on the damages in mississippi, alabama and arkansas coming up later in the newscast. a popular restaurant and furniture store on emeryville's bay street are closed after a fire this evening. christine mason in our abc 7 now

community took this video at the bay street shopping center around 5:30. smoke and flames could be seen from i-80. this fire started in the kitchen no one was hurt. palo alto police believe a man they shot and killed reported a false emergency to 911 dispatchers so officers would respond. last night's deadly confrontation took place outside a home that serves as a treatment facility for people with mental health issues. detectives revealed the man told dispatchers there was a person who wanted to hurt someone at that home on forest avenue. >> and our officers responded and as soon as the first units arrived and got out of their cars, the suspect charged at officers while welding a knife. two officers fired their

pistols. >> both police and the district attorney's office are investigating this fatal shooting. the medical examiner is working on confirming the man's identity. new at 11:00 a prominent islamic relations group is calling for an investigation after a suspected molotov cocktail attack at the islamic center in tracy this morning. these are photos sent to us of the building's exterior. it happened around 6:30 this morning. the california association of islamic relations says they want the incident investigated as a hate crime. also new at 11:00 walnut creek police are asking people that witnessed a beating tonight to contact investigators. this man 24-year-old brice holiday was arrested for seriously injuring another person last sunday. police believe there are more witnesses to the attack and they would like to interview them. damaged homes and smashed cars, a driver blames trouble

with his steering wheel for losing control of this car. that car first pushed an suv into a garage on badger wood lane. the driver lost control again while backing up. his car then hit a home and ruptured a water pipe. fortunately, no one was hurt. police tell us the driver is cooperating with investigators. fire lit up the early morning sky in sonoma county. investigators believe someone may have set a fire at the russian river health center. it appears the fire started outside the building around 2:30 a.m. nobody was hurt. flames, smoke and water did extensive damage to the building and to the equipment kept inside that clinic. new at 11:00, if you received one of this year's hottest christmas gifts watch out. many recipients are finding themselves being treated for serious injuries.

sergio sergio is live with the warning about hoover boards. >> reporter: caroline the warning earlier this holiday season had been that some of these hoover boards were at risk of catching fire because of the lithium ion batteries they contain, be uut now a much more mundane warning. internet video internet video, people posted plenty painful looking falls. this doctor says this popular president sent a few people to his emergency room. >> wrist injuries and head injuries. i have a colleague at a hospital in tahoe and seeing the same thing. >> reporter: he was working at the e.r. at marin general hospital christmas day and four different people came in with wrist or minor head injuries. >> minor trama but people hitting their heads hard enough

to cause skull frukactures and larceny races. >> reporter: when they reviewed the hoover boards the engineer had a spill of his own. >> it went that way and i was going that way. the sudden body movements are easy to control at low speed but when you get going faster and hit a bump and causes you to shift balance you can very easily lose control. >> reporter: consumer reports recommend using a skateboard helmet pads and guards. the doctor says it's advice some aren't following. >> it's christmas day it's fun, new toy what can happen? >> reporter: on twitter the #hoover board fails is spills and injuries from people across the country. the faa is concerned with the estimated purchase of 1 million drones this holiday season. the agency worries they will be more trouble in the skies and on the ground. drones can and do drop from the sky posing great risk to traffic and pedestrians.

a terrifying scene in southern california. winds whipped a fire along the ventura county coast. u.s. highway 101 reopened late this afternoon after the fire forced the highway patrol to close the major artery. that fire broke out late last night when winds battered the coast. >> a downed power line was the cause for this incident and we could surmise that the winds certainly had something to do with that but that is our primary cause. >> 400 firefighters will remain on the front lines overnight. the fire charred more than 1200

acres, no homes have been damaged so far and it's no longer spreading. two firefighters are recovering from minor injuries. new details revealed. chicago police say officers fatally shot a mother of five by accident when they also killed a man while checking out a domestic dispute. it happened on chicago's west ciderly this morning. both people killed were african american. the family of the man killed by police says he had emotional problems. this morning's shooting comes as the chicago police force faces a probe following the shooting of a black teenager caught on video. firefighters made an arrest after witnessing a woman break a car window and steal a bag. at tenth and folsom streets where it happened around 10:40 this morning. the fire crew chased the woman down and called police and held

federal express says the backlog of late christmas deliveries delayed by bad weather around memphis air hub has been cleared. some fedex employees had to skip christmas celebrations at home to get out and deliver late packages yesterday. the company says the weather kept a number of flights grounded this week. fedex also dealt with a surge in deliveries from online shopping orders. business owners are picking up the pieces after two tornados touched down near sack menramento on christmas eve. one hit in ma december doe and one in and came out early this morning to start the cleanup. the tornado ripped the roof off his business front porch and railings. >> every month at the end of the month registrations are due so i definitely didn't want to be out of business today.

my landlord spoke with me and asked me to shut down but it's inconvenient for those who were going to come here. >> the tornado tore apart the shop's electrical panel and they are servicing customers using a generator. federal investigators believe someone may have set a fire that gutted a mosque in texas. you can see some of the damage inside the mosque in houston. atf agents say that fire started in several places. yesterday's fire broke out after about 200 muslims had just finished praying at the islamic society of houston. >> everything was fine, you know, a whole bunch of people in there, capacity full. >> burned the church burned synagogue and temperatures isn't good to see like that. >> no one was hurt in the fire tragedy did not keep mosque members from praying together. they met in a nearby banquet hall today. an unnamed intelligence

another game and have a little more fun with the teams and i think we played our hearts out today for those guys and, you know, they did the same for us. >> at the heart of dallas bowl it was southern miss versus washington off the reverse. jaden takes the ball and waves his way 29 yards for a touchdown. washington only lead by four at intermission but would dominate the second half. miles breaks loose for an 86-yard score and rushed for 181 yards and scored four times as the huskies win and finish 7-6. at the sun bowl in el paso, more snow than sun and this fan didn't seem to mind. washington state taking on miami. finds gabe for six and led by ten at halftime with the snow coming down, the canes rallied. mark walton touchdown run cut the lead to six in the fourth. miami was driving late in the contest but this pass by joseph is going to be picked off.

washington state holds on to win 20-14. coach mike leech gets the win and hopefully not phenomena. indiana took on duke late in the contest. blue devils tie it up and runs it in from five yards out. this game went to over time. the hoosiers griffin oaks needs a 38-yard field goal to force a second ot. it appears to be good but officials say no and it's not reviewable. so duke wins 44-41 the first bowl victory since 1961. after 29 years at virginia tech, frank beamer was trying to go out with a win against tulsa. this game featured plenty of offense, quick screen to isaiah ford will head down the sideline for a touchdown. ford had 12 catch the for 227 yards. under beamer virginia tech became known for great special teams. sure enough on this punt return breaks loose for a 67 yard score. the hookies appear to have this
