>> about good morning, i'm colonel bernard in for carolyn tyler. let's take a quick look at the very chilly weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. good morning. good morning. we are colder than yesterday and temperatures will continue to drop. we have a very weak weather system on the move to the south and east, spreading some light showers in the afternoon over the north bay. it's going to take pretty much all day to move to the south and east. but we do have showers in the forecast for the entire bay area today. it's a cold system. pretty much moisture-starved and the highlight this morning is the cold temperatures. check it out. fremont 31 degrees.

up early 20s from napa, 27 san ramon, 29 livermore and the dewpoints in the mid-20s, meaning temperatures will drop further. sunrise not until about 7:24. this morning anywhere from about 3 to 14 degrees cooler. the winds are very light, they are offshore. the air mass is dry and we will continue to see the cold temperatures right on through 9:00. so 20s and 30s out there. bundle up. delay that morning walk or dog walk. plenty of sunshine out there for the early part of the day, but then we've got showers to track. cornell. >> all right, lisa, thank you so much. when you get unusual whether there you live take a photo or video and share it with us use the #abc7now. about. >> nine people are recovering after a tour bus crash last night. only people on the bottom level of the bus were hurt.

we have details. >> the tour bus came to a screeching halt ahl the driver of this black s.u.v. crashed into the double decker. the driver made a sudden turn in front of the bus, cutting the bus path off, and the driver applied the brakes. of course, we had impact to the bus and the vehicle. >> the embarcadero lit up as police and medics quickly arrived. people rushed out of restaurants to find out what was going on to there were a lot of police cars, people being put on to ambulances. some were treated immediately on the sidewalk before taken to the hospital. the most severe injury was a broken ankle. the deliverful the big bus and s.u.v. were tested for drugs and alcohol. both passed. they said the tour about bus

smoke and flames could be seen from interstate 80. they say the fire started in the kitchen. nobody was hurt. thanks to christine for sharing this video on our social >> new details of a shooting of a man by a police officer. the resident who didn't want to be identified said a 31-year-old man checked into the home only three days before friday's incident. they believe he reported a smalls emergency to 911 dispatchers for officers would response. the man told the dispatcher there was a person who wanted to hurt someone at their home on forest avenue. >> and our officers responded. as soon as the first units arrived and got out of their cars, the suspect charged at officers while wielding a knife. two officers fired their

pistols. >> both palo alto police and santa clara county district attorney's office are investigating the fatal shooting. the medical examiner is working to confirm the man's identity. walnut creek police are asking people who witness add beating outside a mel's diner to contact officials. this man was arrested for seriously injuring another person last sunday. police believe there are more witnesses to the attack and they would like to interview them. damaged homes and smashed cars. a driver blames trouble with his steering wheel for losing control of his car in milpitas. the car first pushed an s.u.v. into a garage on badger wood lane. the driver lost control again while backing up. ition nopes was hurt and the driver is cooperating with investigators. if you received one of this year's hottest christmas gifts, watch out. many are being treated for serious injuries.

sergio quintana tells us why bay area doctors are warning about hover boards. >> in internet video after internet video, people are posting plenty of painful falls off the hover board. one doctor said it has sent many to his emergency room. >> in tahoe they were seeing the same thing. >> dr. carl spitzer was working at the e. r. christmas day. he said four different people came in with wrist or minor head injure writes. >> about redominantly minor trauma but people are hitting their head hard enough they can cause extras and enter cranial bleeding. >> when the engineers reviewed the hover boards for safety before christmas, their engineer had a spill of his own. >> it went that way and i went that way. it's easy to control at low speed but you get going faster

on open forum to stand against hate crimes. in tracey a prominent islamic group is calling for an investigation after a suspected molotov cocktail event at the center in the morning. these are photos sent to us of the exterior. they want the incident investigated as a hate crime. in texas federal investigators believe someone may set fire that gut add mosque on friday afternoon. you can see some of the damage inside the mosque in houston. atf agents say the fire started in several places. the fire broke out after about 200 muslims had just finishes fray protege islamic society of houston. >> when i left there, everything was fine. there were a whole bunch of people. >> burned chairs, burned sib going or a burned temple, it's not good to see it like that. >> nobody was hurt in the fire. tragedy did not stop mosque members from praying together. they met in a nearby bang get haul yesterday.

developing news out of north texas. authorities say there's a substantial tornadoes damage in dallas. the dallas-fort worth area. this video shot south of dallas shows the enormity of a funnel cloud each time lightning strikes. aa look at all of this destruction. 8 people confirmed dead mainly from storm related traffic accidents. the severe weather death toll stands at 24 across the south in less than a week women will have the damages on the latest in mississippi, alabama and arkansas coming up later in the newscast. this morning a freeze warning is in effect throughout parts of the bay area. black ice covered parts of hahoes driver. here it really looked like winter. homes had white rooftops yesterday morning, and daring east bay residents refused to let the cold snap keep them from celebrating the holidays.

coast. >> a downed power line was the cause for this incident. we can surmise the winds certainly had something to do with it but that's our primary cause. >> 400 firefighters have been battling the fire. it burned more than 1200 acres but luckily no homes were damaged. containment is at 60% this morning. two firefighters are recovering from minor injuries. in illinois officers fatally shot a meth of five children of five children by accidents when they also with were checking out a man charged with a domestic abuse. both people killed were african-american. the family of the man killed by police said he had emotional problems. yesterday's shooting comes as chicago police face a federal civil rights probe following the deadly shooting of a black teenager caught on video. furanoser made a citizen arrest after witnessing a woman break a car window and steal a bag. it was in the south of market neighborhood at tenth and

miami airport. the airport said she could no longer sit on their lap. she had to buy a ticket. >> we said she's over two but she falls under the ticket we bought in september. >> the federal law says only babies under age two can fly on a parent's lap. what happens if they have a birthday while they travel? joaquin asked the airline that very question before he booked. they said she could fly both ways on the lap since she was under two before the trip began. >> then we ended paying for a ticket there. >> he demanded a refund and got nowhere. he contacted 7 open your side and we found out the american airlines has a specific policy. babies who sit in the parents' lap and turn two during the travel will receive a free ticket for the return flight.

a travel agent booked the tickets without returning a free ticket for the baby. however they did refund with a voucher for a future flight. one they are happy to take. >> by law she had to sit in her open seat on the flight home. the travel agent did not request that free return flight for the child. make sure your agent know about special fares or book directly with the airline. i'm michael finney, "7 on your side." you might have noticed gas prices soaring across california. they aren't going up as fast as anywhere else in the country. experts blame a shortage caused by unplanned refinery issues in the state. a gas analyst told the media partner the prices should continue to climb. according to triple-a the average price in the north bay is $2.68, $2.69 in oakland, $2.70 in san jose and san francisco, of course, the most expensive in the bay area, with an average cost of $2.78

for a regular gallop of gasoline. last year at this time prices were about the same except in the city where it was eight cents higher. and it is very cold out there. in fact, i used any gym shoe as an ice scraper this morning. >> i used a credit card. >> that's good. maybe tomorrow morning. >> that's an old one. i'm sure you have a couple to spare. even colder this morning and we have some moisture on the way. here's live doppler 7hd. you can barely see it, the top left happened portion of your screen. this very cold air mass it going to descend to the south and east. usually they are pretty much moisture-starved when they are this cold and that's the deal today. it will take all day to get here. late afternoon showers slated for the north bay. as we look outside you will notice that it looks pretty clear and this is the warmer panel of temperatures starting with san francisco at 40. we are under our freeze warning until 9:00. it's 31 in oakland. mountain view and san jose with

30 in morgan hill. and likely into the 20s in the next few hours. half moon bay and the coast, 34 degrees. and another vantage point for you. it is certainly one of the coldest mornings we have seen. check to it out. pretty much everybody here in the 20s. 28 in santa rosa, 27 napa. novato and fairfield at 28. concord 31. 29 in livermore. so the dewpoints sit in the mid-20s so we could see temperatures drop to, say, 26 degrees in livermore before the morning is out. so with the freeze warning until 9:00 everywhere except san francisco and the strip of the peninsula here. it is definitely a frigid morning out there. how much colder? well, you were just as cold almost yesterday in novato and parts of the east bay, around concord. so not a whole lot of change for you. it's pretty much everybody else getting into the act with less wind this morning. you had a northwest wind yesterday. without that san jose to 10 degrees colder and antioch

11 degrees colder. as we get started with this little rainmaker come today, i want to give you some perspective of where we sit right now. it looks pretty good. seems like we haven't had that much rain for december compared to last december, but not sitting too shabby here at the airport. ed 7% of normal. 87% of normal for oakland with over two inches of rain. you can see san jose with their two inches of rain puts you to 121% of normal. and sacramento just at 6735% of normal -- 65% of normal. up north the reservoirs are doing pretty good at 100% of normal. the short term doesn't look wet but the long-term i'll show you in a moment. it will be dry for the last week of the year. so as we go through the next couple of hours, we have the cloud cover increasing in the north bay, and then by 2:00 in the afternoon we have rain, cloverdale and santa rosa. still sunshine in the south bay. but by 5:00 spotty showers gip

to develop around emeryville and perhaps around san carlos. you see the north bay, not a lot going on. by 9:00 still some showers mainly in the city, over ward hayward by midnight. it's over by your monday morning commute. but we will look for the possibility of maybe a few sprinkle getting going in the morning. but it will be warmer tomorrow morning. so that's more important. temperatures anywhere from about 5 to 10 degrees warmer. but rainfall totals only .03 in san francisco. less in oakland with perhaps .1 in half moon day. nothing to write home about. in the mountains a couple inches of snow, just enough to make it icy and dangerous heading to the sierra nevada. low 50s today. san mateo, half moon bay. maybe 50 up in san rafael they will and santa rosa. the accuweather seven-day forecast, maybe a shower today. you notice the cool stretch. but really into the middle of the week we will warm up slowly. it's the new year. so the next seven days, cornell,

here's meteorologist lisa argen. good morning. it's cold out there. >> hi, cornell. it's freezing out there. colder this morning than yesterday. a little green on the screen there. we have increasing clouds for the north bay. a sunny day for the south bay, but everyone is starting out with some frigid temperatures. the very weak weather system slides to the south today so we will have sunshine for the lull being of the morning in the north bay, the bulk of the day in the south bay, but earn has to deal with this right now. 27 in napa. good morning, mountain view. 31 for you, as well as santa fe. 28 san ramon, 29 in livermore, 28 in antioch with 35 on the coast. this is it definitely much colder for everybody than we were yesterday. some areas had freezing temperatures and below freezing yesterday, but everyone joining in this morning with 14 degrees colder by the delta and oakland. that's why we have the freeze warning until 9:00. so temperatures will drop further through the next several hours.

bad weather around the memphis air hub have been cleared. some fedex employees had to skip their christmas celebrations at home to deliver late packages on friday. the weather kept a number of flights grounded last week. fedex also dealt with a surge in deliveries from online shopping orders. business owners picking up the pieces after two tornadoes touched down near sacramento on christmas eve. one hit in modesto. the other shown in this individual no no eldorado hills. one owner stayed away from his business on christmas day but came out yesterday morning to start the clean up. the tornado ripped the roof off its business, the front porch and railings. >> every month at the end of the month registrationings are due so i definitely didn't want to be out of business today. my landlord spoke with me and asked me to shut down but i think it's inconvenient for ought the people who were going to come here. >> tort made also tore apart the electrical panel. small king is servicing customers using a generator at

worth noting. more importantly, the low temperatures. a freeze warning until 9:00 this morning. this is the warm spot in san francisco at 30 degrees. 31 oakland. mountain view and 28 morgan hill. on the coast 34 degrees. in the inland east bay and the north bay we have temperatures in the 20s already. the sun doesn't come up until about 7:24. we won't get into any warming until at least the 8:00 hours. she's numbers likely to drop into the mid-20s. 28 fairfield. 29 livermore. 31 in concord. yes, certainly cold with frost and some ice out there on your windshield so you are certainly going to have to give yourself extra time and keep the animals inside for a while. this morning we are 14 degrees colder in oakland than we were yesterday at this time. san jose 10 degrees colder. and out in antioch 11 degrees colder because the wind has stopped. we had a northwest wind yesterday and that allowed for a

little mixing and keeping things relatively milder. the cold air mass is in place and it will stay with us throughout the day today. so with limited sunshine, we will be below average today. only in the low 50s. maybe even not even 50 degrees. i could have said that better. that's in the north bay. with the freeze warning out there again, hopefully you have covered up the plants. san francisco is the exception. but you saw that 34 degrees half moon bay. so temperatures will hover right around freezing even at the coast. so we will look for the chance of showers later on today in the afternoon in the north bay, evening and overnight hours elsewhere. and we aren't looking at any rain through the new year. but there's a reason for that. so far the rainfall totals have been pretty impressive for the month. of course, we need more. but we are anywhere from 87% of normal to 133% of normal in the bay area. you can see higher here up in ukiah. that's the good news. that's where the reservoirs are. we have what is called a

mid-winter dry spell, which we have every single year. it's not up likely to see anywhere from 4 to even 10 and 15 days of no rain. we certainly are looking at that for parts of december and perhaps january. but by the middle of the week, after the new year, we are looking at more wet weather. the rest of date featuring the cloud cover. cloverdale and santa rosa this afternoon should see showers. by 5:00 not much out there. emeryville, perhaps. and by 9:00 spotty showers from vallejo into the city, down in the peninsula and perhaps around had hayward. but it's really toward the overnight hours the south bay and the santa cruz mountains will stay in some wet weather activity. temperatures today, with the cold weather, will only be in the low 50s. look at the rainfall totals. only about a tenth if you are lucky from mountain view to san jose n the mountains one to two inches. a dusting there. we will look for highs about 50 north bay, 53 santa cruz.
