the dallas area. >> huge tornado! >> some officials declared a local disaster. >> i hear something. something is on fire. >> the in the weather service sending out a tweet at 6:56 saturday night telling people to get to shelter now if you are in the area. >> a tornado warning. >> tornado warnings and sirens sounding off through the city as a large and extremely twisters leveled about cyr neighborhoods, flipping cars and crumbling this church. >> everything went dark and fell on top of me. >> the pastor who was inside when the cyclone hit, said it happened so fast he couldn't escape. the building caving in on top of them. >> i couldn't go very far because everything collapsed. >> another enormous twister seen here ripping through red aoki, texas. taking down powerlines and causing a series of explosions. >> we have gas everywhere. >> dozens of gas leaks and fires springing up in the wake of the

wreckage, leaving 50,000 people without power immediately following the storm. the violent storm visible even from the air wags they were forced to divert flights and evacuate terminals. >> we have news to wait until the storm passed. >> that evacuation order lifted saturday night. officials allowing flights back in the area just after 9:00 p.m. >> and that was philip reporting. recovery efforts are far from over. rescue crews are still looking for any people who may be trapped under debris. >> nine people are recovering after a tour bus crash last night. only people on the bottom level of the bus were hurt. abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian has the details. >> reporter: the tour bus came to a screeching halt after the police say that the driver of this black s.u.v. crashed into the double-decker.

the driver of the ford explorer made a sudden turn in front of the bus, cutting the bus path off, and the driver applied the brakes. of course, we had impact to the bus and the vehicle. >> the embarcadero lit up as police and medics quickly arrived. people rushed out of restaurants to find out what was going on. >> there were a lot of police cars, people being put on to ambulances. some were treated immediately on the sidewalk before taken to the three separate san francisco hospitals. the majorities of victims suffered minor injuries. the most severe injury was a broken ankle. the driver of the big bus and the driver of the s.u.v. were tested for drugs and alcohol. both passed. big bus's general manager said the tour company driver has a solid record. >> our driver is fine. a little bit shaken up, but totally fine. >> a veteran driver? >> been with us for quite a long time, a senior driver, yes. >> about how long? >> about two years. >> the driver will be cited for

making an improper lane change. in san francisco, lisa amin gulezian, abc7 news. >> and yesterday's crash comes more than a month after another accident involving a san francisco tour company. last week the california highway patrol released their findings into the november 13th crash of a city sightseeing bus in union square. the chp sighted the company for numerous mechanical issues on their fleet and 20 people were hurt in that incident. a popular restaurant on bay street closed after a fire saturday night. christine mason in our abc7 new community took this video of the fire on the roof of the elephant bar at the bay street shopping center be around 5:30. smoke and flames could be seen from interstate 80. firefighters say the fire started in the kitchen. nobody was hurt. thanks to christine for sharing this video on our social media. if the you see news where you live, post it with the #abc7now. new details of a shooting of a man by a police officer. the man shot and killed was a

patient at the mental health home where it happened. a resident, who didn't want to be identified, said a 31-year-old man checked into the home only three days before friday's incident. they believe he reported a false emergency to 911 dispatchers for officers would response. the man told the dispatcher there was a person who wanted to hurt someone at their home on forest avenue. >> and our officers responded. as soon as the first units arrived and got out of their cars, the suspect charged at officers while wielding a knife. two officers fired their pistols. >> both palo alto police and the santa clara county district attorney's office are investigating the fatal shooting. the medical examiner is working to confirm the man's identity. walnut creek police are asking people who witnessed the beating outside mel's diner to contact officials. this man, 24-year-old bryce to halladay, was arrested for

seriously injuring another person last sunday. police believe there are more witnesses to the attack and they would like to interview them. damaged homes and smashed cars. a driver blames trouble with his steering wheel for losing control of his car in milpitas. the car first pushed an s.u.v. into a garage on badgerwood lane. the driver lost control again while backing up. his car then hit a home and ruptured a water pipe. nobody was hurt. police tell us the driver is cooperating with investigators. >> happening today, the islamic center of almeda plans to hold an open forum to stand against hate crimes. in tracey a prominent islamic relations group is calling for an investigation after a suspected molotov cocktail event at the center in the morning. these are photos sent to us of the building's exterior. the california association of islamic relations say they want the incident investigated as a hate crime. in texas federal investigators believe someone

may have set fire that gutted a mosque on friday afternoon. you can see some of the damage inside the mosque in houston. atf agents say the fire started in several places. the fire broke out after about 200 muslims had just finished praying at the islamic society of houston. >> when i left there, everything was fine. there were a whole bunch of people. >> burned chairs, burned synogogue, or a burned temple, it's not good to see it like that. >> nobody was hurt in the fire. tragedy did not stop mosque members from praying together. they met in a nearby banquet hall yesterday. new this morning a freeze warning is in effect throughout parts of bait area. in miranda, black ice yesterday morning. there were patches are ice at the saint stevens exit off highway 24. in lafayette it really looked like winter. homes had white rooftops yesterday morning. daring bay residents refused to let the cold stop them from celebrating the holidays.

developing news this morning out of colorado. denver broncos quarterback peyton manning denied he used human growth hormone back in 2011 when he was recovering from surgery in indianapolis. in a report set to air on al-jazeera. it reports several athletes were provided with drugs from the anti-aging clinics. the report claims manning received hgh -- which the nfl has banned -- through his wife so his name was never associated with the shipments. in a statement, manning said the allegation is, quote, complete garbage and is totally made up. it never happened, never. unquote. man manning just appeared on our sister network this morning to address the issue. >> i'm not sure i can understand how someone can make something up about somebody, admit he made it up, and yet somehow it's published in a story. i don't understand that. maybe you can explain it to me. >> now the pharmacist who allegedly gave manning the drugs is now recanting his story

saying there is no truth to any statement he made and that he was secretly recorded. the report also names phillies first baseman ryan howard and nationals infielder ryan zimmerman, and boxer mike tyson, who reportedly received hgh shipments. a southern california brush fire from shut down a stretch of the pacific coast highway is no longer spreading this morning. a terrifying scene in southern california. winds whipped the fire along the ventura county coast. u.s. highway 101 reopened yesterday afternoon. it was shut down for some time. the fire broke out late friday night when winds battered the coast. >> a downed power line was the cause for this incident. we can surmise the winds certainly had something to do with it, but that's our primary cause. >> 400 firefighters have been battling the fire. it burned more than 1200 acres but luckily no homes were damaged. containment is at 60% this morning. two firefighters are recovering from minor injuries.

>> san francisco firefighters made a citizens arrest after witnessing a woman bike into a car and steal a bag. it was in the south of market neighborhood at tenth and fullsome streets where it happened after 10:30 yesterday morning. the fire crew chased the woman down, held her until officers arrived. if you received one of this year's hottest christmas gifts, watch out. many are being treated for serious injuries. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana tells us why bay area doctors are warning about hover boards. >> in internet video after internet video, people are posting plenty of painful falls off the hover board. this christmas one bay area doctor said this popular present has already sent a few people to his emergency room. >> predominantly wrist and head injuries. we saw them at marin general. a colleague also works in tahoe and they are seeing the same thing. >> dr. carl spitzer was working

at the e.r. christmas day. he said four different people came in with wrist or minor head injuries. >> predominantly minor trauma, but people are hitting their head hard enough that they can cause lacerations, skull fractures and intercranial bleeding. when the boards were reviewed them for overall safety before christmas, their engineer had a spill of his own. >> it went that way and i went that way. the sudden body movements are easy to control at low speed but you get control going faster, it causes you to hit a bump and shift your weight, you can lose control. >> consumer reports recommended using a skateboard helmet, pads and guards. it's advice other some people aren't following. >> you know, it's a new toy, it's fun, what can happen? >> the hashtag hover board fails is a virtual blatter of spills and injuries from people around

the country. sergio quintana, abc7 news. >> gas prices are soaring here in california. it is a shortage caused by unplanned maintenance issues at refineries in the state. they say the prices should continue to climb. according to triple-a, the average price for a gallon of gas in the north bay in santa rosa is $2.68. $2.69 in oakland, $2.70 in san jose and san francisco, of course, the most expensive in the bay area with an average cost of $2.78 for a regular gallon of gas. last year at this time the prices were about the same except the city, where it was eight cents higher. welcome to california. and so, so cold this morning. i needed gloves, and need an ice scraper, which i didn't the have. and neither did you. >> it was like lake tahoe this morning, but not because they are below zero. incredible temperatures in a moment. but it's about the weak weather system that will warm us up throughout the evening tonight.

clouds have been on the increase in the north bay and the freeze warning expired. nothing going on yet. we will see some showers late afternoon in the north bay and it's all due to the moisture-starved system. it looks impressive here but unfortunately it will wash out and we just get a piece of it. a gorgeous view from lake tahoe. check out the bay area temperatures in pleasanton. 22. fremont 27. 30 union city. hayward, how about the 32. 25 walnut creek. belmont 27 degrees. some records i think in oakland and mountain view. we will take you to the beach right now where it's still pretty deng cold with 41 in san francisco and oakland you were the exception this morning, like usual. mountain view 36. 37 in san jose. and morgan hill still freezing at 30. 40 in half moon bay. we have showers on the way. they will be wide by scattered. and first you are noticing the clouds increase. temperatures here still are kind of hard to take, right? 32 in livermore. freezing in novato. 36 napa, 35 by the delta.

with no wind and the clear night, radiational cooling, the low dewpoints really, really cold out there. this will be the last of it. since yesterday we cooled off an additional 10 to 11 degrees in our inland valleys. so as the clouds increase, it's going to be a chilly afternoon. we won't have the sun to warm us up, but we are looking at a few light scattered showers. the freezing cold this morning. a chance of showers throughout the later part of the day for most of us. even through the evening hours. then it will remain dry for the last week of the year. we've got our sights on january for more impressive weather systems. so right now we are looking at the cloud cover. by 34:00 it's in and around marin county. scattered showers through sonoma and napa. by 5:00 you may see a light shower around emeryville, berkeley. but it's toward the evening hours you will see more of that perhaps around half moon bay, pacifica, hayward. and san jose getting into the act with santa clara throughout

the overnight hours. and the santa cruz mountains. maybe even some snow on mt. hamilton. the low snow levels will be with us. monday morning, no problems. if you are headed to work, rainfall amounts not much. in fact just a couple hundredths to perhaps a tenth around half moon bay. this moves on out overnight. it deposits anywhere from an inch or two in the sierra nevada. just enough to cause some icy roadways. from the upper 40s to the low 50s today, it's really a brisk one out there with some scattered showers throughout the day. in the north bay more like the evening hours. the seven-day forecast featuring more sun each and every day. overnight lows in the 30s and 40s and by new year's eve it won't be as cold and afternoon highs should reach about 60 degrees. yes, you are noticing no rain on those seven days, but, you know, that's not i typical. we have the midwinter dry spell and perhaps we are in that and we will see more active weather in january, we hope. >> a coat is a good investment.

>> welcome back. many people are planning a vacation soon in the new year, some children in tow. if they are babies they can sit in your lap on the plane. however a bay area got a rude surprise at the airport. mike finish helped them out of the jam. >> joaquin of berkeley couldn't wait to take his wife and baby to his homeland of argentina. >> to get to know my family better. >> the baby sat on her parents lap the whole plane ride to buenos aires. >> we brought a bag full of toys, pencils. >> during the visit she reached a big milestone. she served two. >> so we celebrated in buenos aires. my family was there, friends. >> her birthday loomed even larger when the family tried to get home. >> they noticed she was over two. >> the couple was stopped at the miami airport.

american airlines said she could no longer sit on their lap. she had to buy a ticket. >> we said she's over two but she falls under the ticket we bought in september. >> the federal law says only babies under age two can fly on a parent's lap. what happens if they have a birthday while they travel? joaquin asked american airline that very question before he booked. an agent said she could fly both ways on the lap since she was under two before the trip began. still the agent at the airport said buy a ticket or she doesn't fly. >> then we ended paying for a ticket there. >> he demanded a refund and got nowhere. he contacted 7 on your side and we found out the american airlines has a very specific policy. babies who sit in the parents' lap and turn two during the travel will receive a free ticket for the return flight. a travel agent booked the

a domestic call at a home. the father was threatening people with a bat when the authorities were called in. >> he was having a mental situation. he will get a little loud but not violent. >> jones lived on the ground floor of the two-story home and was opening the door when she was caught in the line of fire and shot once. >> upon their arrival they were confronted by a combative individual. the matter is under investigation. >> the shooting began two days after police officers actions including shooting of at black teenager shut down a shopping mall and other areas of the city. >> why do they have to keep killing our youth? my student was an honor student, he was going very. >> rob emmanuel is facing calls for his resignation. he said anytime an officer uses force the public deserve answers. and we all grieve anytime there's a loss of life in our

city. >> that was alex perez reporting. this morning we are hearing from perhaps the most wanted man in the world, the leader of isis. he is breaking more than a six-month silence with a new audio recording in which he specifically threatens israel. abc news reporter jim has the latest. >> this is believed to be the voice behind isis. a 23 minute long audio statement delivered by a man claiming to be isis leader abu. after 7 months of silence he appears desperate to are rally his fighters, who have lost ground in leadership. 2015 has not been a good year for isis. the u.s. led coalition has killed his second in command and the person in charge of oil and gas in the terrorist parts of syria and iraq. isis oil trucks and supply lines have been heavily damaged by americans in other bombing runs. isis troops have been forced to retreat from parts of tikrit and

ramadi. he appears to be caution for a call to arms among the 1.5 million muslims. he said waging this battle is a duty among every muslim is no one is excused. he also threatened israel directly. and boldly claiming that islam will dominate the world anew until the day of judgment. one administration source dismisses the message as more isis propaganda. abc news. the man who has positioned himself as the republican anti-trump spoke about his rise to the third spot for the nomination. john kasich is now number three among likely republican voters. he discussed why he thinks donald trump won't win the republican nomination because of his stance on certain issues. >> and i'm just hoping that as we go forward he will be a unifier because i'm going to tell you, you can't win the white house without winning ohio. if we have a candidate that

comes into ohio who is a divider, there's no chance they are going to win it. people in ohio want somebody who is going to look at problems and solve them. >> fox business may cut down on the number of candidates for the republican debate next month in south carolina. kasich said his team is confident that he will make the main stage to participate there. federal expression said the backlog of late christmas deliveries delayed by bad weather around the memphis air hub hanrahan cleared. some employees had to skip their celebrations at home to deliver late packages on tri. the weather kept a number of flights grounded last week. fedex also dealt with a surge of deliveries of online shopping orders.

my landlord spoke with me and asked me to shut down but i think it's inconvenient for all the the people who were going to come here. many. us open gifts on christmas eve and some of us have put the box they came in out for recycling. while you watch your new big screen tv, the new box near the curb might give the crooks a hint you have something worth squealing. police in minnesota say many scrooges take advantage of folks just trying to be green. >> they drive up and down the alleys and take notes, whether they are going to come back in a week, three days or three months. they know exactly what some in the house now. >> st. paul police have set up a program to stop crooks.

detroit lions at ford field. kickoff at 10:00 a.m. last night the foster farms bowl was played on the ucla field. here's rick quan with the highlights in this morning's sports. >> good morning. when nebraska was invited to the foster farms bowl, despite having a 5-7 record, some weren't sure the huskers deserved it, but last night they proved their critics wrong. let's go to levi's stadium. nebraska's mike reilly going against jim mora and ucla. early on looked like the bruins would dominate. josh rosen, the quarterback, teams up with kenneth walker iii, and he will not be caught. good for a 60-yard score. make it 14-7, ucla. but the cornhuskers come back to score 30 straight points. tommy armstrong junior goes deep for stanley morgan jr., who makes a sensational one-hand grab. he ran the ball 10 times for 76 yards. he gets in to make it 37-21. ucla cut the lead to 8, but on fourth and ten, rosen is picked off.

a desperation leave. nebraska upsets the bruins 37-29. it's the pac-12's first bowl loss this season. >> we probably played our best football game tonight. when a team can do that, fight through all the stuff that we did, that says a lot about the character of the young men that are in the program. >> i think we as a team have great respect for them, and we don't look at the record. but when you do look at their record you saw they lost 8 games by 8 points or less. they beat michigan state. it's very deceiving. they are a good football team. you can watch the college football semifinals on new year's eve. oklahoma and clemson in the orange bowl and then michigan state and alabama in the cotten bowl. it leads up to the national championship game january 11th on espn. one pro football game last night. if washington could beat the eagles, they would clinch the nfl east. former cal bear, law shawn jackson, taking on the team that drafted him. not a whole lot of love here. after falling behind 7-0 they answer with a pair of touchdowns. washington led by 6 at the half.

kurt cousins threw for 365 yards and four touchdowns. this bullet to chris thompson made it 23-10. for the eagles it was a year of disappointment. demarco murray fumbles the football. d'angelo hall picks it up and scores. washington wins 38-24. after going 4-12 last season, washington is headed to the playoffs. after leaving the warriors to their first nba title in four decades and being the league's most valuable player, steph curry has been named the associated press male athlete of the year. curry is just the fourth nba player to win the award in its 85-year history, joining lebron james, larry bird and michael jordan. he beat out the horse american pharoah and jordan spieth who won two majors. curry gotten even better, and getting golden state off to a 28-1 start. the best in nba history. >> out here to celebrate the end of 2015, which is a great year for me and my team and the

an inch or two in the sierra nevada tomorrow. but right now it looks pretty frosty there with temperatures below freezing. here's some of the cold spots this morning with 22 degrees in pleasanton. fremont with 27. >> union city 30. hayward was at freezing, 25 in walnut creek and belmont, 27 degrees. so we haven't seen cold temperatures like this since 2013. you probably remember your pg&e bill at that time. i do, as well. very, very cold. that year was another dry one and the clouds here in santa cruz right now. temperatures are mainly in the low 40s for san francisco and oakland and at the coast. but it's still awfully cold in mountain view. and san jose with 35 in morgan hill. so further north san francisco with some cloud cover. that is not going to help us warm up. in fact, with the cold air mass in place below average today for your afternoon highs. and still just at freezing in santa rosa, livermore and mid-30s fairfield, cop cord.

36 novato and napa. with the clouds coming in this morning, it kind of stopped you from dropping into the 20s up in the north bay. but tonight we have the cloud cover, and this morning we are anywhere from 4 to 10 degrees colder than we were any other morning. so it's behind us and we have just a few scattered light showers in the forecast. we aren't going to really measure it in ten,, more like hundredths. as that pushes through, a dry week and setting our sights on rain for january. here's a look at the rest of the day. 4:00 it should be rake in parts of the north bay, petaluma, and perhaps around here. the evening hours a pop-up shower in concord, san francisco. 10:00 tonight around hayward and fremont. and finally in san jose. maybe cupertino through the overnight hours but very, very little in the accumulation department. anywhere from about .05 to maybe

>> in 2015 at the food bank of contra costa and solano it takes a forklift to organize the donations. in 1976 that was not the case. >> i was the truck driver. our warehouse was a safeway trailer parked in a church parking lot. >> that year they distributed 36,000 pounds of food. now larry sly walks the aisles as the executive director of a food bank that handed out 20 million pounds last 20 million pounds last year. when you look at these pallets stacked four-high, does it sink in for you you made this happen? that there's some much food passing through your facility? >> that's great, you can celebrate it, and it scares me sometimes. it means we have to do this >> this is just one example. nearly 400 people come to solomon temple in pittsburgh once a month to get groceries. >> i have three kids so it helps a lot. especially around the holidays. the program director is katlyn sly, larry's daughter. >> it really makes me very proud of all the work that he's done. >> thanks for making a difference. appreciate it. >> thank you very much. >> abc7 news was there as bank of america donated $25,000

disneyland fans prepare for a portion of the park to close as it makes room for star wars land. starting next month ten attractions will close, some temporarily, some permanently, to build the new 14-acre star wars land. the park will permanently close big thunder ranch, the petting zoo and big barbecue restaurant and another area had next month. opening day for "star wars" land has not yet been announced. "star wars - the force awakens" has become the fastest movie to make $1 billion. disney said the movie topples the record in 12 days, breaking the previous 13-day speed record hold by jurassic world in june. they also posted the biggest christmas day box office in history with more than $49 million. kiss any is the parent company of lucas film and abc7. i'm going to wait bat two weeks for the crowds to go away. have you seen it yet? >> i haven't. that's a good plan.
