live from the kgo-tv broadcast center, this is abc7 news. >> record cold around the bay area is out of here for now. drew will let us know where records were set today in just a few minutes. but first, the news is little comfort for thousand of residents in contra costa county who can't turn on their gas-powered heaters. i'm carolyn tyler in for eric thomas. this is affecting more than 6,000 pg&e customers in discovery bay and byron. pg&e says the recent cold weather caused the outage that could last into tomorrow night. sergio is live in discovery bay where pg&e has opened two warming centers. certainly yow? sergio? >> carolyn, that's right. two warming centers.

this was the first one that was set up at timber point elementary school. the second was opened earlier this evening at the discovery bay community center at 601 discovery bay boulevard. both are open to residents who may not have heat in their homes because they don't have gas service tonight. teams of pg&e crews fanned out across the discovery bay and byron area. they are conducting pilot light tests. >> the gas is off and we are turning the valve off. >> melissa and her family have been keeping warm thanks to a wood burning stove. they noticed the gas-powered water heater was not working early this morning. some were without wood and electric heaters. >> she is an elderly and i told her to get cozy and stay warm. keep your blankets, and i don't think she's been outside at all today. >> pg&e crews may have to get

out to most of the 6,000 homes affected by this outage. that's a time-comsuming process. melissa says she's heard changing details on when the gas service interruption will be fixed. >> another 36 hours. >> not until tomorrow probably? >> tomorrow evening is what i heard would be the soonest. >> a pg&e spokes person says there is no estimated time for service to be restored. >> our crews are working to restore service safely. we do not have an estimated time of restoration at this point. >> the problem was caused by last night's cold snap, a surge in use that the customers may have overwhelmed the system and now crews may have to make repairs. inside the warming station set up by pg&e there are more pizza than residents, but this place will be open for anyone who needs to warm up, get a bite to eat and get a good night's rest. the pg&e spokesperson says crew members will likely be out in the community again tomorrow and if residents do

have any concerns for their safety, they are encouraged to ask those crew members for proper id before letting them on to their property. reporting live in discovery bay, abc7 news. >> all right, thank you, certainly yow. abc7 news meteorologist drew tuma joins us with the records and how cold is it going to get tonight in discovery bay, drew? >> carolyn, the good news is not as cold as last night. we are coming off a day that has record cold. beating a record of 31 and 29 in moffett field. numerous locations below the freezing mark. looking at discovery bay over the next 12 hours it is not dropping below freezing, but it will still be rather cool with an over night low dropping to 38 degree. now live doppler 7hd is tracking a system that is moving through the area and bringing us clouds. we are tracking a few light showers as we zoom into street level along the peninsula. light showers around redwood city and san mateo and likely

lilian? >> carolyn, as soon as the video was posted on facebook, the people started watching it calling authorities which is how the incident came to their attention. >> she has been identified as brandy chin. she was seen holding her dog by the neck. the dog rolled over several times. >> my reaction was wow. >> and then perez. he is seen in the video picking up the pug who is coincidentally also named ben. they had a heated argument, but why she threw her own dog is beyond him. >> maybe she meant to hurt me by doing it. i am not sure. i can't speak for her, but i know the dog is fine. >> even so solano county authorities want to find chin and her dog and she faces possible animal cruelty charges although finding her has been difficult. chin moved out of perez's house as soon as they broke up. >> we were tracking down every lead we get and talking with people that know her.

they have advised us that the last known whereabouts was in vallejo. >> perez has mixed feelings about all of this. while he doesn't think chin should have treated the dog like that, she shouldn't face charges. >> i don't think she should be treated with anything like that. the dog loves her and she loves the dog. you can see that if you see them together. >> police and humane services want to know if she was violent to her dog before. lilian kim, abc7 news. a flight with a mechanical problem was diverted to oakland international airport. it was the second one in a week. the southwest flight took off from sacramento airport and headed to denver when it had a pressurizationy vent. the plane was circling over yuba city before landing safely. all 133 people on board were put on another flight and arrived in denver three hours

late. this is the second southwest flight to make an emergency landing in oakland this week. on wednesday one of the airline's planes had a landing gear issue encircled for hours burning off fuel. it touched down safely. no injuries were reported. in newark a family was homeless after a fire. a neighbor took pictures of these flames on birch street and shared them with us. abc7 news was there as firefighters were checking for hotspots. you can see most of the damage is to the garage and that's where firefighters say the fire started on a gas stove. a mom, dad and two kids were inside at the time. all got out safely and are now staying with the neighbor. >> they are at my house now, and they will probably stay there the night and whatever it takes for them to get on their feet. >> the fire burned a gas line returning -- running through the garage that caused a small explosion. when you see breaking news

happening take a picture or video and share it with us using the hash tag abc7 now. in san jose food left on a stove started a fire at a townhouse about 7:30 tonight. abc7 news was there as firefighters cleaned up. this one started in a kitchen on the second floor. two people and their two cats got out. no one was hurt. bay area muslims are calling for more help to stop hate crimes. people of all faiths showed up for the islamic center's open forum in alameda today. they shared concerns and spread ideas of how the bay area can come together in a time when many muslims feel their religion is under attack. this as investigators search for the person who threw a molotov cocktail at a mosque in tracy this weekend. >> mosques have been firing security guards to patrol the

the drought is affecting at pg&e we've definitely put a focus on helping our agricultural customers through the drought. when they do an energy efficiency project and save that money they feel it right in their pocket book. it's exciting to help a customer with an energy efficiency project because not only are they saving energy but they are saving water. we have a lot of projects at pg&e that can help them with that and that's extremely important while we're in a drought. it's a win for the customer and it's a win for california. together, we're building a better california.

henderson died this morning one month after getting a kidney transplant. he played from 1988 to 1993. he was part of the 1989 world series champions when the a's beat the giants. he said we mourn the passing of our dear friend. we will miss the person and the player and that smile. the manager of the teams described henderson as one of the glue guys that kept it together. he was very rare. it is like losing your brother. henderson was 57 years old.

severe weather killed people across 41 states. texas was hard hit. strong storms produced at least nine tornadoes and at least 11 people have died. extreme flooding and heavy snow is now creating problems. abc news has that story. >> the twisted sisters went across mile after mile of landscape turning neighborhoods into debris fields and towns into disaster zones. >> we pray and support those who have lost a family member. we pray and support those who have had their homes destroyed. >> for residents it was a night of terror. >> you can see the transformers blowing up. >> the tornado that tore apart the town of garland, texas was clocked as an ef4 with winds howling up to 200 miles per hour. in the neighborhood of roullette, the ferocious gusts made placings of trucks like

75% contained. fire officials say their new worry is land slides if rain hits the charred hills. that fire broke out on christmas night. it burned more than 1200 acres. evacuation orders were lifted over the weekend. officials believe it was caused by a downed power line. this may be the most unusual christmas gift request from a four-year-old boy. >> anything else you want for christmas? >> yes trashcans. >> just the trashcans? >> yeah. >> that is right. he asked for new garbage cans. the city of folsom near sacramento delivered. he is obsessed with putting away the garbage cans in his neighborhood. it is not just his family's, but 17 of his neighbors as well. the garbage truck drivers know him by name, and they are like rock stars to him. >> he loves garbage. he loves all things garbage.

see on live doppler 7hd. a lot is not reaching the ground. look at this. earlier this evening we had a report about a mile north of cobb of new snow, three inches. it is an indication of how cold the air is. we are showing you a fair amount of cloud cover and the forecast will keep the scattered light showers in. the temperatures will be above freezing, and then we will track a warming trend into 2016. these numbers have not moved all that much from the earlier evening hours. 43 in oakland currently 45 in san francisco and 46 san jose. and we are faring better compared to 24 hours ago. most spots 5 to 10 degrees warmer than we were on saturday night. so as we look at san jose, we were right around 30 degree overnight last night. tonight it is not as chilly. by tomorrow morning we will be

in the upper 30s. oakland hit a record low of 30. we will be about 10 degrees warmer than that. by 6:00 in the morning you notice as we go hour by hour it is about 40 degree. a similar story for san francisco as well. numbers are holding steady in the lower 40. no freeze warnings are in affect. we will drop to 40. 38 in san jose. we drop to 35 in napa with the scattered showers. future weather shows hour by hour the chance of drizzle decreases by monday morning and then it is a mixture of sunshine and clouds for monday afternoon. here is the accu-weather seven-day forecast. tomorrow a little bit warmer than we were today. clouds and sun with the temperatures across the region and tuesday into wednesday a dry pat person and milder. here on new year's eve for thursday we welcome 2016 with sunshine. it is a january beauty on saturday and increasing clouds on sunday. we will get rid of the freezing temperatures for now and a gradual warm up as we welcome 2016. >> and going into 2016 no

-- broadcast center this is abc7 news. >> good evening. i'm carolyn tyler. in tonight's headlines it is a cold night for people in byron and discovery bay. crews are working to fix a gas outage. a surge in use during this cold snap may have caused the problem leaving 6,000 homes with no gas heat. they say the service won't be restored. a woman was arrested for throwing her dog on the ground. she was arguing with her now ex-boyfriend at the time. her pug was not hurt, but police went to find her and talk to her and take a look. they believe she may be hiding out in vallejo. severe winter weather is causing problems all over the

country. clean up continues near dallas. at least nine tornadoes up to 200 miles an hour tore through homes on saturday night killing 11 people. major highways are closed in the texas panhandle, new mexico and oklahoma because of heavy snow and record blizzard conditions. in missouri that same system is bringing heavy flooding. the governor there has declared a state of emergency. a new twist tonight after football star peyton manning's reputation is attacked. he is accused of using a human growth hormone banned by the nfl. manning is not backing down. a player known for his dominance on the field is now playing defense. abc news reporter mary bruce has more. >> it is a joke. it is a freaking joke. >> tonight star quarterback peyton manning is fighting back telling espn that allegations that he used

saturday. one was a 19-year-old man suspected of threatening his father with a bat. the other one was his neighbor, a mother of five who opened her door to see what was going on. the reverend jesse jackson gathered with protesters in front of the home and calling for change. >> why do you have to shoot and then ask questions later. >> seven times my son was shot. this needs to stop. no mother should have to bury her child. no mother. >> i want the mayor to understand this is a message to you. you failed us before, but now it is your time to step up. or step down. >> chicago mayor rahm emanuel is asking for a review of police training in crisis situations. police are keeping a close eye on a shopping mall in kentucky after they say up to 2,000 teenagers caused a large riot. police say several fights spread throughout the shopping center. on saturday night the teens were harassing customers and
