the weather. we begin with katie live where many people are bundling up again. katie? >> reporter: this update within the last hour from pg and e. they restored service to 2800 customers. you can see the scene behind me. those are crews working on a main line, a fraction of the amount of workers that swarmed the discovery bay area, going door to door having to restore peoples pilot lights and check their furnaces but the problem is that people have not been home and the access to their homes, so many are facing yet another cold night. cold water for washing dishes. and no stove for cooking a meal. lisa beltran saw the bright side. >> i was excited yesterday thinking i was going to get a new range. but, bummer this was no gas.

>> she and 6200 others lost natural gas service yesterday. crews replaced equipment in a regulator station today but have not identified the cause of the outage. >> it gets cold quickly. >> lisa and her husband visited the red cross shelter for an update. >> we slept in one room and closed the doors kept ourselves warm with a lot of blankets. >> reporter: 200 crews are going door to door to ignite pilot lights and check gas appliances in homes. >> great. do you want it on or off. >> just on for a while. >> we need to have access to the home so if at all possible, we encourage people to try to stay home if they can. >> reporter: he stayed home from work to wait for pg and e. he may inquire about how this

may affect the bill. >> we do have a claims department. if there are concerns we encourage people to call. >> pg and e is not saying when the utility expects to have service restored. in discovery bay, abc7 news. what a hassle. let's give you moyer information about the cold weather. sandhya patel is here with the update. >> 39 degrees, so it's very cold and it's only going to get colder, right now at discovery bay, it's 45 degrees and chilly. i hope they have hats, scarfs and gloves something to keep them warm. around the bay area, we did see temperatures tumble below freezing in fairfield and other areas above freezing except novato 32 degrees. it's only going to get colder discovery bay temperatures tumble from 40 degrees at 7:00 p.m. look at the temperature trend bottoming out. 31 degrees by 5:00 a.m.

so there is a tough night ahead for those folks. i'll let you know how long this will last. >> sandhya thank you. the chp officers and wildlife crews are trying to keep an enormous elephant sale off the highway in sonoma county. abc7 news reporter alan wong is live with the efforts to block its path. >> reporter: hi ama. traffic has been backed up more than a mile. originally wildlife experts brought out a crate but realized they're going to need a crate about four times this size. take a look at this animal that tried to cross the highway. experts believe it's a 500 pound

elephant seal. they used boards to push it back but each time they walked away, she jumped out to scoot to the other side where there is numbing but a dry field. >> the plan is going to be to come back down this way to get her back up on land and then into a large crate that marine mammal center brought with them. the goal would be to get her transported and released somewhere safe. >> reporter: experts say this is an unusual place to find an elephant seal. they think she may be pregnant, which could explain her behavior they're hoping she'll be pushed into the bay. right now, they're making sure she doesn't attempt to cross over highway 37 again. reporting live in sonoma county, abc7 news. what a day it's been there. thank you very much. a theme park train crashed in santa cruz county injuring

eight people. a tour group from south korea was among those riding the train. emergency crews took four people to the hospital including a child. >> spoke to another child and she said she was standing and she fell back and bumped her head. >> officials say the train crashed at low speed into a hillside. the roaring camp railroad will remain closed during the crash investigation. developing news on a xhags day mystery at the hayward bart station. a dead man nouned a u haul truck is jason anderson from bay point. it's unclear how he died. police found his body following a shooting.

officers say they spotted a man pushing the u haul. new at 6:00 details about a man shot dead on christmas day. he's been identified as a 31-year-old and police say he called 911 with a state emergency. and they say he charged at them and say it is a transitional program. >> police are asking for help to track down the man who robbed a store and got away with several hundred thousand dollars. police say this is the man who robbed a u.s. bank inside of a safeway store. the man handed the teller a note. the teller filled bags with cash and gave them to the expect

described as african american weighing 150 pounds. two people died when flames tore through an abandoned apartment complex in the east bay. crews boarded up the charred skeleton. crews say it was common for squatters to use the shelter on cold nights. >> i'm in a situation where you know, i'm like you know it's sad to see people trying to stay warm ending up getting hurt. investigators think it started accidentally. it's the third fire in the building since may. san jose students are feeling the holiday spirit just days after thieves targeted the house they share near the campus and ransacked the place and stole all kinds of stuff. david louie explains the out pouring of support that they're now receiving. >> just working hard to belter our lives for us for our

down there, parking meters is reserved for those big tech buses from 6:00 to 10:00 in the morning monday through friday. this is a neighborhood that struggles with parking. wilbur was surprised to find out this is off limits. >> during morning hours, that space and others are used by the big tech shuttle buses and few bothered to read the sign below the meter. others don't like that the bus stop is close to one of the largest drug stores in san francisco. >> for people like us, coming from getting medications or large amounts of money and get

things others do not. >> but the san francisco municipal transportation agency says there are 125 of the stops used by buses that take more than 8500 people to and from tech companies on the peninsula. >> if there are taking cars off the road that are driving down to the peninsula i don't have a problem with it. >> it reduces gas emissions and takes cars off the street and does a number of things to make the network better. >> the shuttle stop has been part of a pilot program, and supposed to be a permanent fixture in february. still, mta says there is room for discussion. in 18 months, the city collected $2.5 million for the right to use its shuttle buses. an issue has been going on for decades, at home they're

cold nights are ahead. winter chill tomorrow and there is no rain on new year's eve and going into new year's day. tomorrow morning if you do have early plans, do expect temperatures to drop down to 31. some coldest locations will be down into upper 20s in napa santa rosa and palo alto. 33 along with fremont. 40 degrees in san francisco. 34 in san jose so it's going to be cold for the start of the tuesday morning. heading towards wednesday, things change up a little bit. cloud cover and you'll notice a small chance of showers. we'll keep showers in the forecast for wednesday. that system is going north of us. taking a look at rain chances, wednesday, there is a 20% chance and our next opportunity is on

sunday. but as you take a look at beyond the accu-weather forecast, we may have a wet pattern unfolding tuesday of next week and beyond. new year's eve fire works don't worry. it's going to be a spectacular scene with clear skies here in san francisco. 45 degrees at 10:00 p.m. ringing in the new year it's going to drop down to 43 degrees so make sure you pack on layers. if you're heading out just about anywhere it will be a cold night. highs for tuesday cooler than normal side. we had upper 40s for highs. 54 in san jose. and napa 52. 55 in oakland. san mateo, san jose, palo alto, 43 degrees, so staying chilly. a look at the accu-weather forecast, we'll call it frosty and cold with sub-freezing
