building. the fire started on the second floor of the building. firefighters were able to keep the flames from spreading. no one was hurt but a cat did not survive. a string of fires in guerneville could be the work of an arsonist. this here is video captured by a neighbor showing the russian river health center. firefighters deemed the fire suspicious. >> we thought it might be someone getting out of the cold, but this fire was too fast, too quick to be just a warming fire that got away. the atf joined the investigation and neighbors are keeping an eye for a possible arsonist. police are hoping the driver and passengers of a car will step forward after striking and killing a woman in a crosswalk in hayward last evening. the family says she deserves justice. david louie is live at the scene

of the accident tonight. david? >> reporter: well, what it's supposed to be a time of joy is turning into a season of sadness. the family prepares for a funeral. residents tell us that it is always very difficult to get drivers on hesperian boulevard to stop for people in the crosswalk. you can only imagine the deep hurt as the family looks where their mother was struck and killed by two vehicles as she tried to cross the boulevard. a widow, 65-year-old aurora bermudez recognized three daughters and a son. >> it's the holiday. and the loss is going to be, you know, very -- has a tremendous impact to our family. >> reporter: police are investigating what happened and need to talk to the drivers and passengers of a 44 toyota

corolla. the driver of the second car stayed at the scene and the first car took off after getting out to survey the scene. >> we're looking for surveillance footage and i think we're going to find surveillance footage that will help us put this together. >> reporter: pedestrians complain speeding cars don't stop for them even after a stop walk signal was installed. >> it's helpful this, light, but the thing is that a lot of drivers are not paying attention. >> reporter: he says the family will forgive the missing driver and passengers hoping they'll do the right thing. >> please. come out. and say something. we're praying for it. >> in hayward, abc7 news. we're learning about jail inmates that beat a sheriff's deputy on christmas eve after the deputy confronted an inmate about a piece of contraband in

the correctional facility. that inmate began hitting the deputy. >> nine other inmates then jumped in and started to beat the deputy. he was punched, he was kicked. >> investigators believe that for by then object was linked to inmates making their own alcohol. deputies found this homemade weapon. all are now in maximum security cell blocks. the deputy is expected to recover. new details about a deadly officer involved shooting on christmas day. the incident lasted 19 seconds from when officers first encountered the man to the moment they opened fire. police believe they got a fake emergency call. when they arrived they say the suspect charged at them with a nine inch knife. >> a suicide by cop scenario is one that our investigators are

pursuing at this point. >> the shooting was captured by dash cams and both officers are on paid administrative leave which is standard following a shooting. >> in just days every law enforcement agency in california will keep track of all police shootings and use of force. it's part of a new law taking effect in the new year. it includes any use of force by civilians or officers that result in serious injury, or death. agencies will submit to the department of justice. a man visiting a scenic lookout is recovering after being knocked unconscious during a robbery. attackers mugged three people on a hill at twin peaks. abc7 news reporter tiffany wilson has the story. >> 91 and 85, this brother and sister duo came here for the view. >> this is a perfect day. perfect day for it.

>> they smiled until hearing about the mugging. it left a man unconscious and his wife, bruised. >> it's sad. very sad. no respect for the elders anymore. that is what i feel. >> around 11:00 yesterday morning the couple and their daughter were down on twin peaks boulevard, photographing the city's skyline. that is when two men in their 20s approached. >> they demanded the camera. they gave them the camera and a secondary suspect came up from behind and received the camera. the suspect shoved the 81-year-old male down to the ground. >> the victims lost their camera, french pass ports and mb. shirley benzly she'll be more careful. >> i haven't thought about being nervous. >> police want tourists that cameras make them easy targets.

michigan native suzanne wallor says she never expected to feel on guard on vacation. >> i'd like to think that the u.s. is a safe place to travel in. and this pains me. >> tonight, the tourists have not been caught and tourists remain on edge. >> police in millbrae are trying to find two men accused of robbing a gas station. surveillance video captured this picture of the pair. very busy place. the clerk says the men came in last night, one had a handgun. he says they shoved him and stole money. police believe a man rammed a stolen car into a door so he can break into a gun store this morning. minutes later, officers say they found this man inside of another

stolen car. he is now in custody. you can see the damage done to the back of the u.s. firearms company. officers raced to the scene when the crash set off a burglar alarm. it appears nothing was stolen. the store happens to be closed this week. changes are coming at the golden gate bridge that are expected to improve your traffic flow. the bridge district will change the number of north and southbound lanes during the monday through wednesday afternoon commute. here is a live picture of traffic on the bridge. there will be three lanes in each direction. thursday and friday will maintain the current configuration. history will be made tomorrow at san francisco international airport. officials say the airport will set a record of 50 million passengers in 2015. the airport and virgin america will give away a ticket to the 50 millionth passenger.

shared there was no formal plan in place just yet. that is what we were expecting going into this, this evening. however, we did now get a look at the letter being sent to the nfl. i want to read you part of it, including words we remain committed in a way that is responsible to all stake holders. oakland mayor says the nfl never expected oakland to have a formal, new stadium proposal by december 30th. when the deadline hit in less than 24 hours, oakland will provide an update and ask for more time. it's something that worries chris dobins. >> there is concern by many in the camp that if we don't get proposal, something solid to keep the team in oakland that it will be a sign for the owners to -- okay, oakland doesn't care and can leave. >> he says he's been a raiders fan since he was four years old, having once lost the team to los angeles he's not ready to lose them again. >> they're fighting to get to

los angeles we may win by subtraction. >> reporter: it's down to the wire for oakland to present a new plan for a stadium to the nfl. the mayor said the nfl understands oakland is operating in a uniquely complex situation and we can't rush what needs to be a transparent process. the mayor said no taxpayer money should be spent on a new football stadium. whether or not the raiders play here in the future, the city is still paying for past construction. >> we need to find creative ways to keep the team. and right now we have breaking news from southern california. that is where a 4.3 earthquake hit 75 miles east of downtown los angeles. it hit at 5:48 p.m. you can see what the shaking looked like on the seismograph.

skiers repelled to safety off a chair lift on sunday. they'd been stuck two hours up there. the sunshine village resort says the lift broke because of a gearbox failure and 100 people had to be rescued. and they got more than they bargained for. >> everybody is okay. >> yes. >> the first time we're hearing a 911 call made by nnl engineer boy scouts trying to save their scout leader. >> he had gotten pulled into a cave by a bear. >> is he badly injured? >> uh, i don't know. i can't see. >> i know, can you ask him? >> yes. >> yes? >> that scout leader hit the bear with a hammer and scouts put food outside of the cave that lured the bear out. >> that is good thinking.

shared grief with officer dave morris when her mother was taken in an ambulance. >> she looked me in the eye and says santa didn't come because mommy won't wake up. how do you not being emotionally involved? >> her mom, a 39-year-old moved to livermore two years ago. police say she'd run away from a domestic violence situation with the girl's father. she and her daughter lived in shelters but that week, one teacher paid for a hotel room. unfortunately, christmas day, she became ill, and was found unconscious by staff. she hater died. the little girl was taken to live with a foster family. there, she was showered with christmas gifts. >> and before i knew it, we had a truck full of presents. >> firefighters were able to set up a go fund me account to help the family with their expenses.

the child's grandmother flew in from florida. police say the 6-year-old estranged father arrived to request custody of the child. >> he will be going to the court proceedings and fighting for custody and he has the right to fight for custody of his child. >> right now, she remains in the custody of child protective services. the bomb squad and hazmat teams were called out to a fire station after the discovery of explosive materials. the area around fire station one was evacuated. firefighters tell us that somebody found shotgun caps and powder when clearing out a storage unit and brought them to a fire station. >> we'd asking people not to transport the material, just call us to the scene. we can evaluate it there.

>> calorie cycle says it's arrested six truck drivers for alleged recycling fraud. the chp says they found close to 10,000 pounds of used beverage containers which they think the driver was going to cash in for the california redemption value. state law requires anyone bringing used containers into california to declare them. total value for the attempted fraud this year is over $100,000. solano county sheriff deputies need your help to catch a grinch. these are the images of a man who stole from a donation box at a christmas lights display on glennco road. deputies tell us the victims decorate with lights during the holidays and people stop by to enjoy the lights and leave a modest donation to thank the family for their hard work.

monitoring. some teams that means restraining animals but now, biologists are using a training program to minimize that. with the zebra shark, it's wanting to come to the biologist. every time it touches a target he gets food. he's learned to eat gently out of pam's hand. >> he kind of sucks it in. >> now, she's getting the shark used to being touched. it allows her to examine him. >> she's able to get close and see without having to catch him. >> these sting rays are getting the same type of training. today is a major milestone. it could have been a big production in the past. but this time, as soon as pam is in the water, all rays come over to eat. biologists scoop up the ray and walk her to the side of the exhibit. other animals stay calm.
