it started two hours before the new year's eve fireworks display. you can see just how close it is in relation to one of the world's tallest skyscrapers. >> take a look at that. and then it passed by alcatraz. and you can see how the island and the ship are roughly the same size. the ship headed towards the bay bridge and oakland. the goal is to increase shipping between china and the west coast. >> there she is, the benjamin franklin.

be careful on the roads tonight. it could be a little icy. you could see significant ice this morning. the chp says the ice contributed to a hog island oyster company. authorities say he took the icy curve just too fast, rolled over and slid right into the bay. >> any time you have these kind of conditions, you need to be more aware you're not going to be able to drive the same speed you normally drive. you need to be aware of curves, lots of black ice in those areas. usually a little bit more caution. you cannot enter those curves at the same speed you normally would. >> good advice. the driver made it out okay and was picked up by a passing car and driven to a hospital. there's the shocking story of animal cruelty today out of napa from someone you'd at least expect to be accused of such a thing. police say a santa clara county fire fighter abused his dog to death. live at if napa police department with the details.

leigh anne? >> well, let's be clear about this. this dog was five months old, which means it was still a puppy. now, according to the investigati investigation, the dog was slammed to the ground several times repeatedly. it was yelping and then silent. that's when a neighbor called police. we knocked but no one responded. >> our police dispatch center received a call and they believed the dog was deceased. >> police waited outside. with a search warant in hand, the couple finally allowed police in. they found the five-month-old german shepherd dead in the laundry room wrapped in a plastic bag. >> he indicated that he had lost control, that he basically injured the animal as a result of that.

>> a few neighbors had heard the dog crying before. >> we heard it yelping over a period of time. but we thought it was the dog wanting out of its pen. not knowing it was being abused. >> louise was immediately arrested. police officers were surprised to find out that he is a fire fighter with the santa clara fire department. our phone calls to that department were not returned. >> to me, it was totally out of character. i couldn't believe it, really. >> it was shocking, actually. >> in napa, abc 7 news. >> frustration is growing over a neighborhood eyesore in the east bay. >> there's concern over elderly people living in these

36 oakland, 33 san mateo. so after that chilly start new year's day, kind of a carbon copy today. then we'll check our next chance of rain. here's future weather as we go hour by hour sunday night into early monday morning. rant very likely, but it's very light in nature. it's a weak, quick-moving system. it's pretty much out of here by midday on monday. total rainfall, future rainfall tracker shows you as we round out the storm on monday, really a quarter to half of an inch of rain. i think most locations will end up with light showers. a stronger storm will move in here, it looks like, on tuesday. and this one is going to be a two on our storm impact scale. it will be rainy but it will also be windy.

a pleasant surprise for crab lovers. the state will open crab fishing tomorrow. it won't be open for commercial fisherman, but they will be able to go after rock crabs. in november, state health officials delayed the start of the crab season because of dangerous levels of acid which is toxic to humans. officials say levels in southern california are now low or undetectable, making crabs safe to eat. but the crabbing ban remains in effect here in the bay area. it was a great day for goodwill. minutes ago, the organization finished hosting its annual donate thon. abc 7 news was in the mission district in san francisco as volunteers loaded supplies in a truck. goodwill says today alone, they will receive up to a hundred
