the mother did tell me the sound of the crackling fire woke her up. no smoke alarms. she initially thought someone was trying to break in. the woman barely escaped with her fiance and baby boy. >> he was calm. someone found him a blanket. >> the neighbor ran from her house next door. the heat melted her siding and cracked windows. she uses oxygen for sleep apnea but said the smoke destroyed the tank. firefighters say damage is estimated at $300,000. in the front yard of the home, a charred mattress and blank the lie next to a swing set. the mother told me they lost their christmas presents. two older children and other family members lived in the front unit which lot burned. fewer fig despite the loss, firefighters say no one was hurt. >> a quick evacuation saved their lives. >> the red cross is helping provide supplies. the family is staying with nearby relatives but say where they go next will be yet another

new challenge in this new year. in vallejo, alisa harrington, abc 7 news. >> a house fire in san jose sends one firefighter to the hospital. the fire breaking out on virginia street. no one inside the home was injured but at left three people were displaceed. officers say a firefighter was slightly burned on his face but has been treated and released from the hospital. the cause of the fire is under investigation. >> drugs and alcohol may be to blame for the death of a pedestrian on interstate 80 in fairfield this morning. chp said a 33-year-old daily city man was hit and killed by a big rig around 6:40. witnesses reported seeing the man dancing on the freeway just before he was hit by the truck. authorities found the victim's car disabled a short distance away. his name hasn't been released. >> a high school teacher is now in kust by accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a 14-year-old student. officers arrested 27-year-old eric hankins at his home.

he had been on administrative leave when investigators got word of the possible relationship. he faces felony charge of lewd and lascivious behavior with the child 14 years or younger. it a dangerous and illegal tradition in some bay area communities. celebratory gunfire at the stroke of midnight. in concord, the bullets were flying just as a small plane was landing at buchanan field airport. laura anthony is live in con cord with the alarming story. laura? >> well, it is all quiet now. but at midnight last night the neighborhood on the airfields here rang in the new year with fireworks and gunfire. something pilots here say is nothing. to celebrate. >> the buchanan airfield in concord, there were noises that sounded very much like gunshots.

it. >> state officials closed the crabbing season in november after finding unsafe levels of toxin caused by a massive coastal algae bloom by el nino. recent tests showed those levels dropped to low or undetectible for rock and dungeoness crab. commercial and recreational crab fishing along the northern california coast including monterey and santa cruz remains off limits. >> a tough industry. it is such hard work and the weather is unpredictable. >> some purchased their crab from out of state. others have taken it off the menu all together due to rising cost. for now it is too soon to tell whether crab prices will go down. both have not traveled south. operators are not sure it is worth the trip. >> you know what it is like when there is a you this boats fishing against you over and against five or ten boats fishing around you. >> hoping the ban will be lifted locally before the end of the

francisco. so future tracker temperatures as we go hour by hour. 8:00 tonight out on the town. chilly with a winter jacket. we see 30s pop up in north bay around the immediate bay. in mid to low 40s. towards the midnight hour temperatures continue to drop pf overnight tonight, we will see the freeze warning go into effect at 11:00. only for the north bay. we have the clear skies early on. we will be allowing temperatures to cool off to about 30 in santa rosa. 29 in napa. just about 40 in san francisco. 38 in oakland. 35 in san jose and cool 33 in antioch. for your saturday, not as bright of a day as it was today. increasing clouds but wind will kick in. temperatures up to 55 in san jose. 52 in san francisco. and high of 50 tomorrow for napa. then on sunday, track one of many storms on the seven-day forecast. this is on the storm impact scale arriving sunday afternoon.

but generally light wind or light rain. future weather picks it up into sunday we go. you notice the rain confines to the coast early on. as it moves inland it loses its punch. so it falls apart in terms of moisture. so i am expecting a wide range in terms of rain totals. as you can see along the coast the healthiest amounts of rain, half moon bay, almost a half inch in san francisco. and once you cross the bay, and into the east bay and inland those numbers will drop off dramatically. but then, watch what happens. back to back to back storms. tuesday, wednesday into thursday. each one of two on the storm impact scale. they could be packing a lot of rain and gusty winds at times. each storm dropping half inch to over an inch of rain fall. so watch these numbers. future tracker rain fall as you go into early next week, tuesday, wednesday, into thursday. the rain fall really accumulate four inches possibly in santa rosa. three inches in san francisco.
