>> reporter: hi, kristin. well, this type of gunfire has been deadly to people on the ground. a stockton police officer was grazed by a gunshot last night. here in concord. some of those in danger were actually in the sky. it started at midnight, lasting about ten minutes. fire works and gunfire near buchanan field. just as a small plane was making a final approach for landing. >> they don't want to get hit, right? >> the plane wasn't hit, but veteran pilots say it could prove deadly. >> it can kill you because it hits you. it can kill you because it disables you, and you end up breaking the airplane. it can damage the aircraft. >> reporter: planes fly at 1,000 feet or lower around buchanan and 500 feet over the

neighborhood to the north, where residents told us some of the gunfire came from. there were illegal fire works, too, but those typically posed no danger to planes at least. this former pilot is not worried about bullets. >> more concerned about birds, drones or lasers. >> reporter: depending on the cartridge, scientists estimate a bullet can travel as high as 10,000 feet. in california, discharging a firearm into the air is a felony. in concord, abc7 news. and more proof of just how dangerous celebration gunfire can be. a stray bullet hit a police car and an officer in stockton.

when happened when the officer was unloading his car. the start of the new year brings 8,000 new laws to the state of california. >> bicyclists must abide by a law. head sets while driving are not allowed. >> are those head sets? >> yes. >> you're not supposed to wear them. >> i work as a bike messenger 30 hours a week on the street. it's just a way to catch up on pod casts and it's more entertaining. >> reporter: others are willing to give up that entertainment. >> no matter what is going on. >> reporter: beginning today, bike lanes will be open to hover boards. the law says riders must be 16 and wear helmets. >> you can try enforcing the law

but plenty of people are going to be under 16 and not wearing helmets. >> and a few seconds later, they were on again. the state minimum wage went aup and the debate resulted in several laws. concealed weapons are now banned on college campuses. 19 other states have similar laws. also, a family member or law enforcement can ask the court to take a gun away if they think they will harm others or themselves. vaccines will be mandatory for k-12 parents. parents can no longer asked for a personal relief exemption, only medical exemptions will be allowed. here are two more of them that didn't make headlines. cheerleaders must be treated as employees by professional sports teams and pedestrians and

>> it's a beautiful-looking start to 2016. now, cold air is very dense. and it settles as they can trap pollution. so starting at midnight, poor air quality is forecasted but you wanted that fire burning in the morning. take a look at the low dropping to 19 degrees this morning. santa rosa, 24. napa, petaluma, 25. a cool 28 was morning temperatures in livermore, currently out there, holding into 40s. partly cloudy skies overhead. 44 in oakland. 46 mountain view and 41 in novato and 38 if fairfield. we have another freeze warning in the north bay at 11:00 and this is where we'll likely see chilly temperatures dropping into mid-20s and lower 30s so have the plants covered up. it's going to get cold there. we'll talk about the chance of rain in the accu-weather forecast in just a moment.

>> thank you. as a firefield high schoolteacher has been arrested for sexual misconduct with a student, accused of having an inappropriate relationship with a 14-year-old. he was a science teacher at the school and placed on leave in december when the allegations first surfaced. chp believes drugs and alcohol may be to blame for the death of a pedestrian in fairfield this morning. investigators say a 33-year-old man was hit and killed by a big rig just east of sassoon valley road. witnesses reported seeing the man dancing on the freeway before being hit by the driver. authorities found the victim's disabled car a short distance away. a dublin police officer injured in a high-speed chase is expected to make a fully coverry. the motorcycle officer was injured after chasing a suspected car thief. the crash left him with broken bones and officials say the officer is expected to be

released from the hospital by tomorrow. fire moved through a vallejo home so quickly the family barely escaped. abc7 news reporter alisa harrington joins us live with what is left. alisa? >> well, a large extended family lives here, including a baby and two other children. that is one mattress. they're all safe tonight but they can't go home. the family has the challenge of finding a new place to live to start the new year. >> it's like an explosion. you know? mary was asleep when she describes a fireball woke her up before 5:00. temperatures shot this video. a unit next door erupted in

flames. they lost just about everything. including christmas presents. >> i started to almost go fund me and i don't know them. i was going to see what kind of help we can get them. it's a new year. >> the family was too upset to talk. the mother did tell me the sound of the crackeling fire woke her up. there were no smoke alarms. she thought someone was trying to break nchl the heat blew out windows of nearby homes and melted some siding. the damage is estimated at $300,000. other family members were also living in the front unit that was also burned. >> them hearing the fire and evacuating saved their lives. >> the red cross is helping provide supplies. the family is staying with nearby relatives. in vallejo, abc7 news. >> the south bay, a firefighter was burned battling a house fire

california's coast. state officials closed the fishing in november and have now lifted part of the advisory south of the bay area near san luis obispo and santa barbara counties. fishermen in santa cruz have yet to travel south. some say they weren't sure if it will be worth the trip. >> you know when there are a thousand boats fishing around you and 5 or 10 boats fishing around you. >> commercial and recreational fishing remains off limits in northern california. >> new super bowl 50 cards will be available for purchase. they are being provided by $3 each. good deal. >> a hayward boy held out past his due date to become the first baby of the new year. >> yes. the 2016 timing couldn't be more perfect.

tel aviv mayor says it appears to be an act of terrorism. police in germany says a threat of a suicide attack prompted a closure of two busy train stations in munich. officials received a tip of 7 to 7 possible attackers. smoke is billowing from a 63 hotel in dubai that caught fire 24 hours ago. sources say the blaze started when equipment caught fire on the 20th floor. authorities say everyone got out safely, with only 16 minor injuries reported. this video shows how thick the smoke was. the cause of the fire is under investigation. officials decided to go ahead with the new year's eve fire works though the fire was burning right down the block. the bay area has strong representation for a new year's day tradition in southern

abc7 news viewers came through in a big way for a horse rescue group. >> the center was in danger of shutting down, and now, it's a very different story. this happy horse is named hat hattie. she fell in love. >> it's permanent now. after that, i adopted her. >> we're kind of a rescue taking ones that nobody will take. >> it's a haven for abused and abandoned horses. they're rehabilitated and adopted out. if that is not possible, they get a permanent home here at the sanctuary. the operation is run with

donations and staffed by volunteers. but this fall the center was in crisis because of hay prices soaring because of the drought. they had to raise $50,000 or shut down. and many of you responded. >> we have had a huge outpouring from abc7 news viewers. >> hundreds of donations came in to the center's go fund me page and mail. >> i have received letters of support. i have had phone calls, i have had people reach out to us just to let us know what we're doing is important. >> the response still makes her emotional. now, the center met its goal and will stay open. >> it's the best feeling in the world. >> much of the money will be used for an irrigation system. >> this property has four wells on it. >> once it is ready, the center will grow food for horses and cut down on hay bills. and the 350 acre center happens
