>> it's saturday, january 2nd. glad to have you with us. i'm chris ngyen. let's start with the forecast with neat lisa argen. >> hi, chris. mid-levels of the atmosphere are picking up some moisture, but it's not reaching the ground. it will take a while. the sub cloud layers are so, so dry. we will prime the atmosphere today, perhaps squeeze out a few showers. but more rain arrives tomorrow and sets the stage for some rainy january days ahead. so a live look outside. even with a little wind in the upper elevations, not enough to mix things out. as a result we have a spare-the-air day today with the worst air quality in the santa clara valley. so temperatures with the cloud cover warmer, 30s and mid-40s around the bay. but it's still chilly in santa rosa and also in san ramon and livermore. grab the jacket. you will not need to scrape this

morning. temperatures much, much warmer this afternoon. cooler, cloudier and in the 50s. chris. >> lisa, thank you. a bay area teacher has been accused of molesting a student. we are hearing from stunned parents and students of the sudden arrest. police say it happened on the campus of fairfield high school. we have more. >> he taught chemistry and integrated science. >> reporter: andrea said 27-year-old eric hankins was her chemistry teacher at fairfield high school. >> he got along well with the students. he talked to us a lot too. he was really friendly. >> this was his first year at fairfield high, but it didn't last long. hankins was arrested on new year's eve and charged with lewd and lascivious behavior with a 14-year-old student. police say it happened on campus in early december. >> how does something like that happen on campus? that shouldn't be happening. >> hankins was placed on administrative leave until his arrest. >> a few days ago i received an

e-mail from another chemistry teacher saying he's no longer going to be our teacher and he will be taking over for us. >> to know that someone was taking advantage of their privileges and rights as a teacher is disgusting. >> police also searched his home for evidence of an ongoing relationship with the student. >> the fairfield unified school district was unavailable for comment. meanwhile investigators are still asking the public for more information about this incident. in fairfield, alan wang, abc7 news. this morning a man and a woman are facing felony charges after a skinny dipping adventure salt an upscale wine country hotel turned into a fight with police. just after midnight the police were called after people saw two people jumping the fence into the pool area. the two were drunk and vandalized the property. police said when they tried to stop the pair, the man struggled with an officer and they used a stun gun to subdue him.

authorities are trying to determine why a pedestrian who was killed last night was walking on a san jose freeway. the chp said the 65-year-old man was walking on the transition ramp from southbound 280 to southbound 101 when he was hit by at least one car. the incident closed two lanes of the connector for about two hours. the driver of the car was not injured. alcohol does not appear to have played a factor in the crash. also in san jose, a woman who was stabbed tuesday night in an attack that left two people hurt has died. sky 7hd was overhead when police converged on the shopping center. police say several men attacked the couple at a carl's jr. restaurant. the woman was stabbed in the neck. the man is still in critical condition. police say they made some arrests in the incident but have not released their identities. 6:03 is our time. a family in vallejo is homeless after an early fire new year's morning destroyed their home. the sound of crackling flames

woke them up and they raced out just in the nick of time. the fire burned the home down to the frame. it started in a back unit built over the garage and spread to the front unit. the family lost everything. an estimated $300,000 worth of items, including the christmas presents. the heat was so intense it melted the siding and broke windows on neighbors' homes. >> it was like an explosion. first it was crackle, and then it was, bam! >> fortunately no one was hurt. red cross helped with providing essential supplies and the family stayed with relatives last night. >> the new year has begun and there are 807 new laws that took effect yesterday in california. they include an increase in the minimum wage from nine dollars to ten dollars an hour. vaccinations are mandatory for all a through 12 opportunities with no exemptions for personal beliefs and it's illegal to wear ear plus or buds in both of your ears while driving. we have more. >> we saw one bicyclist on

market street that was wearing both earbuds and she quickly fessed up to the mistake. >> this is wrong, kids. don't do that. don't put two headphones in. >> she was delivering meals to a nearby shelter. she's been here for years. >> do you agree with the law? >> yeah, because there's a lot going on. you have people and bikes. >> i enjoyed two who were enjoying bicycling around san francisco. >> i always wear just one because, low volume, because i can hear from music while riding but not that loud so i can hear people talking. >> wearing just one ear bud is legal. police and traffic safety experts say having one ear free allows riders to be tuned into the traffic around just enough to be safe. but not every bicyclist grease. >> it's very unbalanced to do that. it's like listening to two different conversations.

must be certified by the environmental protection agency. >> we have more moisture headed into the upper atmosphere that's taking the chill out of the air. the dewpoint is coming up and that will allow for warmer conditions. as we take a look at live doppler hd, you notice not only green on the screen, but white as well. this is not reaching the ground, but it could be above 1200, 1300 feet here on heels aboutburg and geyserville. you see the pinks here. but overall we could see a passing shower, but the main activity heads off and will hold off until late tonight and into tomorrow. it's a number 1 on the storm impact scale tomorrow. it's a spare the air in the santa clara valley. we have a warmer atmosphere and the air quality not quite as

bad. we have the clouds and 40s out there. 38 half moon bay, 40 morgan hill, 41 san jose and 41 mount view with 44 oakland. usually when we get to the north bay and east bay valleys we have had the frigid temperatures this morning. still some 30s, but certainly not as cold as it's been. 35 santa rosa, 39 for you in napa, 38 novato and 37 by the delta. upper 30s in livermore, as well. concord check being in at 43. so compared to yesterday, anywhere from 4 to 13 degrees warmer. so the atmosphere will be allowing for the warmer days with the added moisture content, and we will see a wind shift. the winds will crank up. this system will bring winds out of the southeast, but the tuesday, wednesday system will be much stronger. not as cold. late evening showers possible and the withet pattern begins tomorrow. here we go tomorrow afternoon. partly cloudy 1:00, fast forward this to the 11:00 hour, showers on the coast. they around leaching the inland

valleys. by the overnight hours, into sunday morning we will see more showers and overall with a wet pattern into monday morning. remember, monday, of course, the kids going back to school, folks going back to work. it will be slow going. and the rainfall amounts between tonight and monday morning range anywhere from about .2 hinch to over a .5-inch of rain. not bad for the first system. fast forward into the rest of monday morning and you will notice by the evening hours we are wet again. heavier rain monday night into tuesday. very windy, and we will look for still some showers as we head toward the latter part of the week. so additional rainfall on top of what we are going to see sunday and early monday will bring another inch or so to san francisco. two to three inches in the north bay. santa cruz mob continues will be doing well also. san francisco rain chance force the week, not much today. look what happens tomorrow. monday, tuesday, wednesday, thursday. it's going to be rainy. highs underneath the clouds. we will be on the cool side

>> it is half past the hour on this saturday morning. thanks for joining us. i'm chris ngyen. we are wake being up to cool temperatures across the bay, here's meteorologist lisa argen tracking the conditions where you live. hi, lisa >> good morning. today is a pattern change with a transitional day. cloud cover here, upper elevation moisture. a warmer start. a spare the air alert and some moisture will be working its way into your neighborhood probably later on this evening. so the first system is offshore. more rain. that system is an impact number 1 rating. today we will just feel the effects with the cloudy conditions, the warmer start, and that spare the air alert for

santa clara, the poor air quality. 43 fremont. 41 san jose. 37 san ramon with 35 in santa rosa. so perhaps an upper elevation rain-snow mix for some of you. a late shower this morning. otherwise it's the warmer start and gray skies this afternoon. a few peaks of sub on and off throughout the east bay and the south bay. but temperatures, cubs again, will be on the cool side in the low to mid-50s. and then we will time-out that rain tomorrow and self days of rain in the week ahead. chris. >> lisa, thank you. developing news out of the midwest. missouri governor jay nixon will address the flood rescue response today. the the overflowing mississippi river is threatening homes and businesses near st. louis. meteorologist endra is in the flood zone and has more. >> purchase full floodwaters ripping this house from its foundation, sending it floating down the mississippi river.

>> it's historic. it's devastating. >> in illinois another body recovered from the floodwaters. now at least 23 deaths from the flooding in illinois and missouri. two teenagers are still missing with currents hindering the search. >> it's particularly dangerous to have this kind of rain and then this kind of cold. >> back in missouri the river is finally beginning to recede, but -- >> what we spend on this we cannot spend on our road and bridge program in the future. >> with water treatment plants overrun by the river, safe drinking water is a problem too. >> while to floodwaters are starting to recede, the amount of drinking water is low in these tanks, and soon customers will be left without. >> it is now moving south. communities all wait to louisiana bracing for more major flooding. >> in about three weeks we are going to crest in this spot where we are standing now and we will have about 12 additional feet of water on top of what you see behind me. that was endra peterson reporting.

back, release ago new series of videos attacking those pushing for stricter gun controls, including democratic presidential candidate hillary clinton. abc news, washington. you >> an all-out search is underway in israel for the shooter in a deadly attack yesterday at a popular bar in tel aviv. the gunman opened fire with an assault rifle, killing two people and injuring at least 7 others. you reports say officials know the shooter's identity. they say he's an israeli-arab. the man's father identified him after seeing news footage. the tel aviv mayor said it appears to be an act of terrorism. >> developing news out of france. three people are hurt after soldiers opened fire at a mosque they were guarding yesterday. one of the three is a soldier. officials are calling it a surprising incident. a person drove toward the soldiers and knocked them to the ground. they told the driver to stop and

when they didn't, the soldiers started shooting. the officials have not yet identified the suspect who was shot in the arm and leg. i. >> abc the 7 news viewers have come through in a big way for a horse rescue group that was facing a big crisis. in october we told you the equine rescue center was in danger of shutting down. now thanks to you it's a very different story. we have more. >> this happy horse is named hattie. one neglected and afraid to come near anyone, now she's strutting herself and pose fourth holiday photos. deborah was originally planning to give hattie a temporary you foster home as this stable in palo alto. then she fell in love. >> it's permanent now. a few months after that i adopted her. >> hattie is one of many success stories made possible by the equine rescue center south of hollister. >> we are kind of the rescue that will take the ones that nobody will take.

>> the center is a haven for abused and abandoned horses. they are rehabilitated and adopt out, or if that's not possible they get a permanent home at the sanctuary. the entire organization is run by donations and staffed with volunteers. but this year they were in crisis because of hay prices soaring because of the drought. they had to raise $350,000 or shut down. and many of you responded. >> we have had a huge out pouring from the abc7 news viewers. >> hundreds of donations, large and small, came into the center's gofundme page and in the mail. >> i have received so many wonderful letters of support. i have had phone calls, i have had people reach out to us just to let us know that what we are doing is important. >> the response still makes monica emotional. now the center has met its goal and will stay open. >> it's the best feeling in the world. >> much of the donated money will be used for an irrigation system. >> this property has four wells on it. >> once they are ready, this he

center grow hay and cut down on the hay bills. and the 350-acre rescue center happens to be home to one of the san joaquin kit foxes. one of the most endangered species in california. >> they live off the endangered kangaroo rat, which we have colonies of them. the goal is to make it a wildlife habitat for the endangered animals. >> she is working with the u.s. fish and wildlife service on the project and it may be eligible for federal funding. >> it's pretty awesome. >> of course, the center still needs donations to keep up with day-to-day expenses. but all in all it's a great holiday season thanks to the volunteers and the abc7 news viewers. ama daetz, abc7 news. monica said her emergency call for donations brought in more than $60,000. but the center always needs more

new this morning, if you take public transportation in the south bay, you will be riding new buses this year. the santa clara valley transportation authority is rolling out more than two dozen articulated clean energy buses. the buses are 60 feet and will replace the older ones that currently operate on the 522 line along el camino-real. passengers can expect more comfortable seating on the new buses. and wi-fi. >> weather-wise, there's a spare the air alert in effect? >> yes. we have cloud cover, though, warming us up this morning. what a nice change. 45 in san francisco. 48 on the coast with 37 san ramon. 35 santa rosa. a few chilly spots, but you won't be scraping your windshields or have to wait that long to have to get out and enjoy the game. although we will have a good

commute. so rainfall totals anywhere from late tonight into that early monday morning ride. it will range from .2 to .3 in the south bay. and probably more in santa rosa. we are picking this up monday afternoon as more showers will arrive for the evening commute. look what happens late monday into tuesday. this one is a stronger system. we are going to have some gusty winds, perhaps a little bit of a break there. but then by wednesday into the afternoon hours, it's a soggy day. showers continue into thursday. this activity spreads into southern california, as well. we are adding to the rainfall totals from sunday with an additional 1 to 2 inches with the tuesday-wednesday system. the rain chances in san francisco each and every day. the slightest will be today. then perhaps into next friday. highs underneath the clouds, cool again. 15 in vallejo and napa, 51 antioch. the seven-day forecast, the spare the air alert today. an outside shower is possible. periods of rain tomorrow.

here's the highlights in this morning's sports report with rick quan. >> good morning. if not for the slip-up in the season opener against northwestern, stanford might be playing for the national title. yesterday it looked almost unstoppable against iowa in the rose bowl. coach david shaw had his players fired up for the third appearance in pasadena in four years. the cardinals scored on the very first play from scrimmage. kevin hogan to christian mccaffrey. he takes it to the house. 75 yards. mccaffrey was just getting started. the cardinals defense had 7 sacks and intercepted this pass. he takes it the other way, 56 yards for a touchdown. stanford scored a rose bowl record 21 points in the first quarter. it's hard to believe iowa won twelve games this season. this time mccaffrey returning to punt, 63 yards for a score. the heisman runner-up broke the rose bowl record for all-purpose yards with 368. he game the first player to rush for 100 yards. shaw dipped into his bag of tricks.
