the year end clearance sale is on now at sleep train! ♪ your ticket to a better night's sleep ♪ >> good morning. i'm cornell bernard in for carolyn tyler. it's sunday, january 3rd. here's a quick look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. good morning. >> good morning, cornell. here's a live look at doppler 7hd. you can see some green here. the darker green representing some showers. we had a few light showers in the north bay and we tip to see returns from santa rosa highway 101. not all of this is reaching the ground. the layers underneath the clouds are very dry. the moisture we see is mainly falling from bodega bay, marshall, point reyes. this will increase throughout the day and overspread the bay area, focusing on the coast and the north bay. so this is the first weaker system that will visit us later today through tomorrow morning.

49 right now in hayward, 46 fremont. 44 to las got tas and a mild 48 degrees in napa. cloud core today, rain developing for the folks in the east bay valleys. concord and livermore, you won't see much. you will see the focus for the next system to the south. we will talk all about it and time-out the storm systems coming up. cornell. >> lisa, see you soon. thank you. two people are okay this morning after their commercial fishing boat ran into trouble. high winds blew their boats into the rocks in marin county. the fishermen tell us how they got to safety. >> it was the wind. if the wind wasn't so strong, we could have made it. >> it was not the way the new year's fishing boat was supposed to end. after the 30-foot vessel would sail out of richmond, it lost engine power and was headed for the shoreline rocks at china camp state park. >> a little unnerving there.

>> a little bit. >> he said the seas were rough early saturday and the winds were fierce. >> a 15 knots. a little rough. blew it up there real fast. >> you try to figure out how to get it to hold, but it wasn't holding. tried too keep it out of the rocks, but it wasn't happening. >> the captain radioed for help before running aground, but both men made it to safety. park rangers say bay waters can be treacherous. >> you can sink a boat. it's easy to think about the waves. this is when we normally have most of our problems. even though it's an outgoing tide, the vessel was being blown into shore. >> the vessel probably ran out of gas. the fiberglass hull prevented an oil leak. officials will monitor the boat for any changes. meantime the fishing trip wasn't a total loss. >> i did catch one fish, so that was cool, and i saved it. . [laughter] >> now the u.s. coast guard said the boat is still on the rocks but now has a hole in the bow. at this point the officials say there's no threat to the environment.

a salvage crew working with the boat owner on a plan to try to move it. a berkeley woman is in critical condition this morning after she was caught in a crossfire in richmond. this is where it happened at 23rd street and cutting boulevard around 6:15 last night. two women were driving through when someone shot the driver in the neck. she's identified as clara duggen of about berkeley. >> i heard six shots fired, and then the collision. as soon as i heard the shots, i ducked. >>duggen is in the hospital with critical injuries. >> san jose's first traffic death of the year came last night when a bicyclist died when it collided with two cars. it happened just after 7:00 p.m. on east read and south 7th street. the two cars were driving in opposite direction and bicyclist reportedly ran a red light. officials say drugs and alcohol do not appear to have played a part in the accident. a hit-and-run accident in

san francisco forced the closer of mission street for a few hours. the accident was reported last night around 7:00. police arrived at 4th and mission to find a car overturned. the driver of the car took off running and was eventually arrested inside bloomingdales's department store. no one else was injured. >> some east bay homeowners are feeling duped after renting out their house on air b in b. there was damage and a lesson learned catch the huge party the teenager threw. >> the house on santa clara avenue is her pride and joy, and this is cell phone video of her with police after her home was trashed. >> tons of booze in the kitchen. there were beer cans and actually broken glass in the house and cigarettes. >> she rented her home on

airbnb to what she thought was an older man from chicago for new year's eve. it really went to a teenager who through a rager for his 18th birthday. 200 kids were all over the house and wrecked it. >> people were either jumping on them or something. >> this neighborhood did not want to be identified. >> one woman told her about the party in her house. >> i was concerned and i saw young people walking up and down the street and across the street and they were shouting back and forth. >> by the time she and her partner got home, the kids had cleared out. >> she called the renter, who returned. police arrested him on the spot for vandalism. but the problems aren't over. >> the couple has had to call police several times because teenagers just keep showing up here. a lot of them left the party so quickly that night that they left personal items behind. >> the audacity is beyond me. really, you have done this to our home and you are concerned that we aren't giving you your sweat jacket back to you right away? >> the couple admits they should have screened more.

i'm very thankful, and to everyone that donated, both helped out, even the somalis. we really appreciate it. >> firefighters said it was just a matter of doing the right thing, helping a family in need get back on their feet. a san jose water company said broken bolts on a valve is blamed for flooding in one neighborhood. take a look. it sent hundreds of gallons of water gushing here yesterday morning. it was taken a member of our abc7now community. according to officials, water did not enter any homes in the area, but water did back up into her driveway. >> well, this morning we woke up and the whole street was flooded. >> i've been out here since 7:00. i took a break and came out. i cleaned my next door neighbor's yard, as well. >> abc7 news was there as crews fixed the problem. the san jose water department

capped the leak around noon. when you see news where you live, take a photo or video and share it with us using the #abc7now. >> a sinkhole in san francisco that's been causing a lot of traffic problems is now repaired. abc7 news was at 24th and church street as crews put on final patches of a 3 by 10 hole of a sinkhole. church street had been closed since thursday when the hole opened up. the muni j line passengers had to take a bus around the repairs. >> a dubai's megaship will sail from the port of oakland this morning or tomorrow morning. it's one of the largest in the world. the benjamin franklin sailed under the golden gate bridge thursday with just 20 feet to spare. as it passed alcatraz, the ship was pretty much the same size a quarter mile long and as wide as than a ten-lane freeway. stacked with 18,000 containers filled with consumer goods from asia.

city leaders in san jose are looking for new housing options for the homeless. that's after they closed down the jungle last year. many have nowhere to go. a media partner reports that the city is considering running up a homeless tent city run by a nonprofit group. they said a managed encampment is better than having them camped out illegally along roads and bridge overpasses. the goal is still to find permanent housing, though. drugs and alcohol would not be allowed. they say that would keep it from turning into another version of the jungle. >> happening today, for ever oakland. a group that wants to keep the raiders in oakland. after game today the group will talk about why they think keeping the raiders in oakland

is the best business decision for the nfl. the party starts at 1:00 p.m. at the buffalo wild wings at southward mall in hayward. the application to move to los angeles can be submitted tomorrow for the raiders. 17 of the nfl owners will meet this week in new york to discuss plans, which will set the stage for january 12th when all 32 owners could decide between proposals by the raiders, chargers and rams. last week oakland mayor libby shaft proposed a new 55,000-seat stadium that could open in 2019. san diego and st. louis also submitted their plans for a new stadium last week. >> a big day in the nfl. today is the final day of the regular season. but there's a new about twist off the field between top fantasy sports sites. could players themselves find themselves winners? >> today the biggest names in fantasy sports facing a new potentially crippling challenge. the new york attorney general going afghan duel and

draft kings to give all the money they played in new york state back to their customers. this lawsuit the shows ads people easily making big bucks are misleading. claiming nearly 90% of craft kings players in 2013 and 14 actually lost money. >> they originally deposited money with the daily fantasy companies based on doubling their money, which is what the advertisements promised. and he says that was a false promise. >> this is just another part of an already fierce legal fight. the attorney general filing suit against fan duel and draftkings in november, trying to get them to stop, calling them illegal gambling operations. both companies have denied it. they took in $260 million entry fees from 600,000 customers in 2015. they want the company to reimburse each for losses and

pay a $5,000 penalty for each violation. fan duel vowing to fight this merit less suit. they said the lawsuit is based on a fundamental misunderstanding of fantasy sports competitions. both companies are still allowed to operate in new york. a judge has yet to decide whether that will tip as the case goes to trial. marcy gonzales, abc news, new york. crews with san francisco public works were out conducting the most complete survey yet of market street ahead of a major improvement project. the truck you see there was out early yesterday morning gathering information to create a 3d survey of the busy thoroughfare. it used light detection and ranging technology, otherwise known as lidar for short. it's the first step to do a detailed design work for a better market and transit corridor. here's some animation after recent trial runs. the technology picks up on every detail, including buildings, light poles, sidewalks and other street features.

some major changes are coming tomorrow for those who commute over the golden gate bridge. bridge managers say that the current evening rush hour plan isn't working well, the plan, that is. starting tomorrow crews will change the lane configuration of the bridge only twice a week rather than every other day. take a look. this is what you can expect on thursday and fridays. four lanes north, two lanes south. on monday, tuesday, wednesday, there will be three lanes south and three lanes north. officials hope this will alleviate congestion during peak hours. >> travelers beware. today is expected to be one of the busiest travel days after the holidays. if you are planning to travel you will see long lines as you pick up and drop off, and long security lines too. check your flight status before heading to the airport for any delays or even cancellations. i feel some flight delays coming on. the rain slowly making its way to the bay area. >> light showers over in oakland and sfo so things will be

impacted in your afternoon by the rain. this is the first in a series of wet weather makers and the second one quickly on your heels much stronger. some may not see a break from the first system to the second system. that's where we will have the main impact and we whether have a break after that which is good news. we need it because more rain is on the way beyond that into the second half of the work week. live doppler hd showing returns from the coast here. we've had light rain, reports of it in san francisco, over into oakland. you see the echoes here. the main activity is offshore but it continues to push up from a southerly direction. that's why we, looking at the warm start to the day. an abundance of the clouds. but when i put in the clouds right here, you notice there's a pretty active series of cloud decks offshore. this is the first one. it splits and that's why it's not that huge. look what is on its heels. this is a big storm system and

we will feel the brunt of gusty winds, heavy rains, and it will be so quickly on the heels of this one that some of you may not see much of a break from 1 to 2. here are the raindrops from mt. tam. 49 san francisco and oakland. you see the temperatures are pretty mild. 44 morgan hill, 57 half might be bay. san jose nice and quiet with temperatures in the low 40s. you may escape the game today without any raindrops. but just in case bring the rain gear. it could see a few showers. mild in the upper 50s. 41 livermore. you see novato at 48 degrees. here's a look from the exploratorium camera. cloudy skies. showers possible this morning. rain develops for everyone throughout the afternoon. we will see a wet week ahead. as we time-out the first system, you will notice we have the returns here in the north bay mainly, but showers are popping up all around bust look at the

3:00 forecast model. still shows the main activity offshore. but as we go through the dinner hour, things get going into the east bay, the south bay, and it continues through the overnight hours. 2:00 in the morning still some pretty good rain. but by the morning commute, good news. we just have scattered showers. 8:00 you see a few more cells developing. look what happens by 11:00. more rain is out there, and it continues to be quite active into monday night. so rainfall totals through monday morning, three quarters of an inch from half moon bay to san francisco. it's about a third in concord. so as we pick this next model up, this is throughout the day on monday. look what happens overnight while you are sleeping. tuesday morning we've got heavy rain and the bulk of this system continues to come in throughout the morning hours on tuesday. there's the break many we will need it by then right on into wednesday and by wednesday afternoon more rain is offshore. these are the numbers but take a look at the colors. as we go toward the next seven

days into the weekend, half moon bay, the orange, that's four inches. yellow, that's three inches say cross the heart of the bay, and about 2 1/2 for concord and up in the north bay. so about a foot of snow by tuesday the snow levels still kind of cold, which is good. won't be that warm. the highs mid-and upper 50s. look at the forecast. look at the numbers. the first one is a weak one, 2 for tuesday, a little break on wednesday and thursday, bringing in the wind and the heavier rain. we probably will get into some flooding concerns, maybe some mudslides. be very careful out there and stay tuned because things will change. of course, the timing of it is hard to win found. >> serious weather headed our way. grab the umbrella and don't let go, right? >> pretty much. >> ever wonder where your christmas tree goes after you dump it on the curb? we will

>> good morning. we are starting this half-hour with a look at the wet weather. here's meteorologist lisa argen. good morning >> good morning, cornell. the wet weather has been confined early on to the coast in the north bay. but now we are seeing a few showers slip over into the east bay. but the main activity is running into some very dry air. when you see the darker green and the yellow here, this is eat of 1, west of 1301, that's where we are looking at the rain. some of this is falling in terms of a very light shower activity. the main activity is offshore.

community under water. north of little rock, arkansas, the flooding so widespread, divers are found swimming along the boat dock of what used to be this lake. >> the crash -- the crest we had today was the highest crest in history. we've never seen this before and most of us figured we never would. >> you go to work in the morning, everything is fine. you come home in the evening, 8 hours later, and water has risen 4 feet. >> it swallows everything in its wake, leaving 24 dead and more than 100 homes in ruins. now the residents here are banding together to save their community. the high school basketball team, the central tigers, running a full-court press in anest to minimize glad damage. seen here filling sandbags to protect a church community center. the families of one of the players forced to clear out their home. >> they had to move all their furniture and everything out of the their house. i think this is the worst they have had it. >> residents in kayaks survey

but this is an essential argument against donald trump. >> abc news, washington. >> a look at presidential candidate ben carson. easier hauling his campaign less than one month prior to the iowa caucuses. five staffers resigned from the campaign. he appeared with george stephanopoulos and spoke about what he's doing to regroup. when he asked why he was unhappy with the staff, he said it was the difficulty of executing plans. >> i want a culture of openness, not a culture of control. and there were a lot of people saying, you know, we have these great ideas but we can't get an answer, can't get a response. those are things that really don't work well for a campaign. >> carson and his staff are also preparing for the sixth republican debate next thursday in south carolina. democratic presidential candidate hillary clinton is coming back to the bay area this week for two campaign fundraisers. clip will attend a conversation with hillary event in san francisco friday afternoon.

later that night the democratic frontrunner will be at a reception in palo alto. one ticket for either event costs $2700. clinton's last trip to the area was in early november. saudi arabia is being criticized this morning after it executed a prominent shiite cleric. he's one of 47 prisoners killed yesterday. it led to protests throughout the middle east, including a group that stormed the saudi embassy in tehran, causing damage. iran's leader warned saudi arabia of divine revenge. they already back different sides of the war in syria and some believe it could destabilize the region. in the south bay the muslim american community will host a protest in response to the execution. if you would like to attend it's from 2:00 to 4:00 on steven's

creek and winchester streets -- boulevard in santa clara. this weekend faith leaders are gathering in sacramento to talk about radicalization and the threat it imposes this the muslim community. it's taking place at the city's largest muslim center. young muslim americans say the fear of violence committed in the name of extremist is two-fold. one, they don't want innocent people hurt, and, two, they don't want their faith to be misrepresented. >> sometimes i feel like it's my fault. i feel like i didn't do enough getting to know my neighbors, showing what real islam is. >> this is not islam. we condemn these acts. today we are taking it a step further and addressing the issue head on. >> they say the goal is to show the world that the muslims oppose violence in the name of god. . >> rain has arrived in bait area. lisa argen is going to tell you everything you need to know

oakland perhaps down through sfo. we talk about over two-hour delays, and this continues to be pumped up from the south. we are looking at some mild conditions. a lot of cloud cover out there. it has to go through a lot of the dry layners the atmosphere. it will take time to move in and to bring rain to everyone. this is the first system here. it splits. that's why it's not a strong one. but take a long at the one to come, the second system. this is much stronger. it's going to impact us with some gusty south winds and some heavier rain. the view from mt. tam, you see a few raindrops here. it's been pretty gray and wet. 49 in san francisco and oakland. 48 san jose and morgan hill. and san jose you likely will only see a stray shower. not much going on throughout the day. the coast you will see the rain. in fact it's going to be a very rainy time of it all week long at the coast. 42 santa rosa. it's 38 in novato. some of the protected valleys still pretty chilly out there but certainly not as cold as it's been. 46 concord, 41 livermore.

a few drops for you, the golden gate bridge. light showers throughout the day today. they will be spotty and scattered and focused from the north bay to the coast. then the rain develops this afternoon through the evening hours. stays with us all night long. we get a break tomorrow before the stronger system for some of us. here's the way it will shape up this morning. notice a lot of the activity is still offshore throughout the day. but as we go through the dinner hour, it pushes all the way across to the east bay. maybe not all wait to lafayette, but eventually you will see the rain through the overnight hours. then as we get started for a busy monday morning commute, there will be spotty showers. a little bit of a break, but not much. look what is offshore. it continues to pump in here, and the next system bringing the heavy rain monday night into tuesday. the first system three quarters an inch from the coast, and in san francisco. a third of an inch concord and livermore. lesser amounts for the inland east bay. and here is the heavier system, the stronger winds from the

north bay on tuesday afternoon through tuesday night, the commute, the overnight the hours. we get a little bit of a break. and then into wednesday another impulse heads our way. that's the third system. there's a fourth one behind that. it will be weak burks we are looking at the totals to not only come up to over an inch for everyone by tuesday, but as we go through the rest of the week into the weekend, the orange indicates four inches from the coast, half moon bay, santa rosa crude mountains, and the heart of the bay area. about three inches for everyone as you add up the four systems and the snowfall will be about a foot before we get to tuesday. the highs underneath the clouds and scattered showers, 50s n the north bay upper 50s, south bay, the niners, maybe a scattered shower. you see all the 2s, that means we could see about an inch of rain, gusty winds, but there will be breaks. that's why you want to tune in and check in with each. our newscasts to see the timingfulla of this. >> serious rain, and if you are driving up there, be careful,
