nbt -- abc7.com/apps. first thing this morning there was a worker prepping the field for next month's super bowl. the youth soccer league trying to protect the field responded by expanding its lawsuit against the city of santa clara. abc 7 reporter david louie first tweeted out pictures of crews digging up the field this morning. he joins us live from the soccer field with more. david? >> reporter: you can say one thing for sure, and that is the nfl works fast. its crew ks have been out here digging holes. they've also had crews out here trying to convert this soccer field into a super bowl media village. this has angered so much the soccer community in santa clara, that soccer moms, dads and coaches are taking the nfl to court in the morning. crews were digging holes first thing this morning. they were making a pattern of eight holes perot.

t even though a court challenge by the youth soccer league is set for wednesday. >> the judge had made it clear while there was no tro in place, no temporary restraining order in place, that he would not be pleased if anything drastic occurred in the interim before the previously scheduled wednesday morning -- or sorry, wednesday afternoon hearing. >> reporter: the nfl told abc 7 news on friday that no digging on the field would be done, but this video contradicts that. the three soccer fields are to be used by a media village, security and event staging for the february 7th super bowl. >> it sure does look like it, that they think and the nfl may actually believe, too, that they're above the junchdge's request. that's a poor misstep on their part. >> reporter: the agreement between the city and the nfl was signed only a few weeks ago displacing an estimated 6,000 young soccer players. in preparation for the conversion, about a dozen flat-bed trucks arrived today

loaded with pallets of turf cover which will be placed atop the soccer fields to protect them from the weight of equipment. >> they've had loads coming in from tennessee, louisiana, chicago area, the ones i done up in sycamore, illinois. >> the youth soccer league is taking the nfl to court in the mo)ning to try to stop use of the field. david louie, abc 7 news. the other big story tonight is the hunt for another coach for the san francisco 49ers. team owner jed york admitted hñ's been humbled an disastrous season that forced the firing of jim tomsula yesterday. he's looking for a new head coach that can win super bowls. we're joined live at niners headquarters in santa lara. an apologetic jed today. >> no question. very humbled by the season last year and one and done for jim tomsula, despite winning the season-ending game against the

rams. jed york addressed the media. he said he was humbled and knew what a tough road it was going to be for his head coach jim tomsula. >> he kept this team together and this locker room together this season under very difficult circumstances. for all of that, i thank him and i appreciate his efforts. >> jed has received so much criticism from 49er fans and he understands why. >> this season was frustrating on a number of levels. we took a step back from our ultimate goal of winning a super bowl. for that, i want to apologize to our fans and for everybody that cares deeply about this team the way i do. >> reporter: he also admitted he didn't have all the answers. >> you have to learn from mistakes. you have to learn from failure. and we didn't get this one right. and we need to make sure that we get the next one right. >> reporter: general manager trent baalke will remain with the administration. and he's now on the clock. >> trent understands that i'm not satisfied with the current state of this team. trent's role is to find the next head coach and continue to build

this roster and get us back to championship form. >> reporter: jim tomsula will collect the remaining $10 million on his contract and jed says this payout will not affect the hiring of their next coach. >> we're willing to spend what it takes to get everything right to get back to a championship culture. >> reporter: colin kaepernick, for one, will miss coach tomsula and had these parting words. >> i just thank him for everything. he's been a good person to me since he's been here. he's been a stand-up guy to me, someone who treated me the same. >> reporter: there's been rumors that the york family is thinking about selling this team. >> my family's owned this team since before i was born. and they'll own the team after i'm gone. >> reporter: and that's good to know because the key in sports is continuity. and the 49ers will now be hiring their third head coach in three years. we'll hear from general manager trent baalke coming up at 6:00. thank you so much.

an anti-y ok family must find a new home after their home went up in flames this morning. the fire started around 10:30 inside a home on putnam street in madison court. crews had it contained a short time later. officials believe it started in a bedroom. one woman went to the hospital with second degree burns. the exact cause is under investigation. the chp is investigating a single car accident right off interstate 880 in san leandro. the driver lost control and ran over two road signs before running off the road. witnesses say the car flew 30 feet into the air off the embang mnt. it happened on the westbound marina boulevard exit off of northbound 880. an ambulance took the driver to the hospital. the extent of his injuries are unknown. a berkeley teacher remains hospitalized tonight in critical condition. she was an innocent victim in a saturday night shoot-out at 22nd and cutting boulevard in richmond. her students were told about that shooting today. abc 7 reporter melanie wood row is live in berkeley tonight.

>> reporter: a lot of sadness here. school administrators have described 52-year-old claire dugan to me as a dedicated career teacher. and today, as you said, her students and their parents learned that she's in the hospital in critical condition. educators say they did their best to explain to students as young as 9 years old their fourth grade teacher was hurt. >> the whole school community is in pain over such a senseless shooting of dedicated career teacher. >> reporter: saturday night richmond police say 52-year-old claire dugan was driving on the 2200 block of cutting boulevard when she was shot in her neck. dugan crashed her vehicle. detectives say they are still following up on leads. one thing they say they know for certain, dugan was an innocent victim. >> it's really unfortunate when this happens in any community, and it could have happened to any one of us. >> reporter: the shooting was the second in the area. earlier saturday afternoon there was another shooting and

collision on westbound i-580. investigators say the victim in that shooting who is also in critical condition appeared to be targeted. detectives are still exploring whether the two shootings could be related. >> hopefully all energy by the authorities is just going out to find whoever was responsible for this. >> reporter: she says her twin daughters are in dugan's class. >> it's not a matter of it comes close to home. it is just a matter of it just happening, period. >> reporter: taylor says she's already spoken with her children about violence. >> just help them with whatever emotion it is that they're feeling. >> reporter: people with signs that said "peace for richmond" and "enough is enough" rallied saturday night. in berkeley, melanie woodrow, abc 7 news. the 24-year-old's sister left her brother alone in the

trail wer the two dogs described as pit bull or pit bull mixes. the boy was in foster care but his sister was allowed to have overnight visits with him. she's posted a series of youtube videos of her dogs showing how gentle they can be. the dogs will be euthanized if they're deemed dangerous. no arrests in the case. pg&e is investigating what appears to be the first power outage in san francisco that appears to be caused by a drone. three homes in vernal heights lost power last night. >> we heard loud explosions. >> reporter: she says she and her neighbors believe this power pole at peralta neighborhood and hampshire street in vernal heights was hit by a drone just after 5:00 last night causing their lights to go out. >> someone was flying a drone in the neighborhood. and lost it or it crashed. and they came over here looking for it. >> reporter: the federal

aviation administration estimates 1 million americans received recreational drones for christmas. now you can add them to kites and balloons as potential headaches for utilities like pg&e. >> they could, in essence, cause not just a power outage but even a power line to come down and potentially a fire. >> reporter: for some in vernal heights like this family, the outage was more like a surge. >> power went out for about 90 seconds, then everything came back on. >> reporter: pg&e restored everyone's power after two hours after replacing a second of the damaged line. these are the pictures a witness shared with us. the utility company looked for the drone but, like the neighbors, came up empty. the faa is trying to regulate the recreational drone boom by requiring owners to register models that weigh more than half a pound up to 55 pounds. pg&e believes the vernal heights incident offers a safety lesson. >> what's important is that folks do see something tangled

vehicle and what happens next has left one family heart broken. >> police in san francisco are looking for two people who may have stolen a precious necklace from a 90-year-old woman. and this story gets worse. it happened on christmas day. abc 7 reporter lyanne melendez live with polk street. >> reporter: this family opened this store late this morning because they were at a flea market trying to find what was stolen from them. their 90-year-old mother doesn't understand why anybody would do this. she now spends most of her day searching for something that has always been a part of her life. these two tibetan necklaces that were stolen on christmas. >> it's sentimental value. because when my mama left tibet 60 years ago, that's the only item she carried with her. so attached to it. >> reporter: on christmas her daughter, the owner of this jewelry store on polk street, was loading her van with some

items. >> loading the stuff. and it's just like five to ten minutes. so i asked mama, can you watch this bag. >> reporter: in one of the bags were her mother's necklaces. this surveillance video shows a moment the car pulls up, the passenger gets out and reaches inside to grab the two bags, then they drive off. >> mama is shouting. i said what happened, mama? it was just five minutes. somebody took my bags. >> reporter: witnesses say they saw the driver of that car minutes before entering other stores. a surveillance camera managed to get this picture of him. to make matters worse, the 90-year-old woman has dementia. >> she forgets what happened, and every five minutes she's looking for that, searching for that. >> reporter: inside one of the bags were other items and jewel friday the store valued at about $40,000. but the family says they just want what was stolen from their mother. police are asking for the public's help.

in san francisco, lyanne melendez, abc 7 news. the signs of a slowdown in china's economy sent stocks tumbling on this first trading day of 2016. the dow closed down 276. its worst loss in two weeks. at one point down more than 450 points. in asia the losses were so big that trading was automatically halted by a new breaker system on the exchanges. that's caused a mostly down day for several bay area companies. apple shares are now up 1% but were down for much of the day. google, facebook and twitter are all still down more than 2%. netflix shares are down 4% and shares for pandora dropped 8%. bon voyage to the benjamin franklin, the largest cargo ship to ever dock in the u.s. has left the bay area now heading back to china. a 1300-foot 158,000 tn vessel x

exited the port of oakland this afternoon. dredging and cranes just to get ready for this vessel. 18,000 carriers, it is now headed back filled with agriculture and other u.s. 3r0ds. these new kinds of mega ships can reduce the cost to export and import between the east and the west. gas prices are going down, but pg&e rates are actually going up. >> 7 on your side's michael finney here with those stories and more. >> just in time for the cold weather. isn't that right? startinged from, this friday, pg&e customers will receive an unwelcome new year's gift, higher prices. pg&e's average monthly bill for residential customers will jump 7%. that means the average residential customer will pay about $11 more a month. the average bill coming in at $147. both natural gas and electricity

will cost you more. another death has been tied to takata air bags. another ruptured in a crash that killed a teenager last summer. this marks the ninth fatality linked to faulty air bags made by japan's takata. it involves 23 million cars and 11 automakers. gasoline is at the lowest price since 2009. throughout the midwest gas is selling for less than $1.70 a gallon for regular and prices here in california are expected to drop below $2.50 by the middle of this month. the slow winter driving season and a global oil market are dropping prices. u.s. shale oil production has created a supply and saudi arabia has not cut production hoping to drive some producers out of business. we'll see if that works. >> thank you, michael. time to turn to our weather

and the rain that we've been seeing today. >> yes, looks like a little bit of a lull right now. sandhya patel is outside with the forecast. >> we're getting a little bit of a break in between storms right now, larry and ama. outside here not much rain, but if you take a look at live doppler 7 hd, you'll see where the showers are still popping up. this is not our next storm. this is just some residual moisture from today's system which didn't deliver a whole lot. a few hundredths to about 0.2 in many areas. in the north bay, seeing light showers right now. also around lucas valley, san rafael, some spotty showers and down towards the santa cruz mountains, watsonville, castroville seeing showers as well. in the sierras snowing, much more coming, chains required on state route 88 and 4. temperatures ranging from the upper 40s to the low 60s. quite a bit of cloud cover from our emeryville camera. stormy tonight through the morning.

stronger storm wednesday, showers continue on thursday. and there's more beyond that. tonight's storm going into tomorrow morning ranked two with a moderate storm half an inch to an inch for most areas. gusty winds to 45 miles per hour expected. so tonight at 7:00 p.m., rain develops in the north bay. it gets heavier by 10:00 p.m. you'll still notice the heaviest rain is still focused up in the north bay. heavy rain moves in across the rest of the bay area while you're sleeping about the morning commute does not look good. 4:00 a.m., 5:00 a.m., still moderate to heavy rain. 6:00 a.m. it eases up a little bit, so not as heavy. 7:00 a.m. still looking at some showers. flash flood watch has been issued from 10:00 p.m. tonight to 10:00 p.m. tomorrow night. recent burn areas could see flash flooding and debris flows are certainly possible. a flash flood watch late tonight through tuesday morning for the big sur coastline. you're looking at the potential for some flash flooding down there and highway 1 maybe

impacted due to locally heavy rain. so watch out. rainfall totals with this next storm could be over and inch in the wettest north bay locations. winds, yes, they'll ramp up later on tonight. you notice along the coast 44 miles per hour. heading into midnight. winds ease up for the morning commute but still breezy going into your 5:00 to 7:00 a.m. hour. winter storm warning 10:00 p.m. tonight until 10:00 tomorrow night. i would carry the chains and expect travel delays. you'll notice some of the resort there's, kirkwood picking up 21 inches. next storm wednesday is stronger. it's a three on the storm impact scale. gusts could take down treeses and power lines. you'll notice that the rains will be coming in but really during the morning commute wednesday when it gets stormy. could see some thunderstorms. 5:00 a.m., 6:00 a.m., you're still looking at a nasty

commute. 7:00 a.m., 8:00 a.m. still looking at moderate to heavy rain. it starts to ease up a bit. then by early afternoon we're going to scattered showers. for the next four days if you want to look at how much rain we're talking about, this is why we may see potential for some ponding on the roadways. watch out. just be careful. anywhere from about 2 inches to over 3 inches of rain by thursday night. tomorrow morning allow that extra time. wet and windy, upper 40s to the low 50s. it's going to be a cooler day, upper 40s to the upper 50s with scattered showers. two on the impact scale for tomorrow, three on wednesday, then showers thursday. a break friday. chance of rain again saturday going into monday and as you look at the accuweather seven-day forecast fast forwarding beyond the forecast next week looks like several storms. larry, ama. >> thank you. an abc 7 viewer sent us
