>> well, get your umbrellas out. this is a live look from our camera at peer 15. it's overcast right now but it's going to be a sloppy day. good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, january 17th. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn. good morning. you are right. this is the second right we will see a 3 on our storm impact scale and that's what we are expect later today.

motor the bay area is dry except for the north bay. but check this out. this is what is on the way. it will be impacting the north bay sooner, rather than later. so a coastal flood watch until tomorrow morning and a flash flood watch for areas until 1:00 this afternoon. we are looking at the potential for some urban and small streak flooding. the creeks rising out are their banks. and if you look here, we have light rain here this afternoon and then ramps up throughout the late average. this is when it's spreading south and it will trail off to the rest of the bay area. mild temperatures, south winds ahead of it. 53 san ramon, 56 san mateo and to a quarter mile visibility for concord, about a mile and three quarters half moon bay. we will talk about amount, timing and the second one on its heels coming up. thank you, carolyn. >> thank you, lisa.

as lisa just told us, we are expecting one of the strongest storms we've seen this season. melanie woodrow shows us how one bay area community is preparing for what is expected to be a messy storm. >> flooding caused a highway 1 closer near valley forge. some trucks managed to get through high-sanding water. the north bay is expecting swung of the strongest storms we've seen this season. >> watch out for the flash floods that we did get a warning for. >> the north bay could see localized flooding, mudslides and debris floats. >> if there are trees down or wires down from the winds or anything like that, let us know how we can help. that's what we are here for. >> kim said his home has flooded in the past. >> we live on a ridge so a lot of wind with the elements. >> those elements are expected to continue through sunday night. >> but we are still waiting for the big part of the storm to

and giving back to the community. he hold his stores in 2009 but stayed on as president. the store near union scare and the one in palo alto are the only ones remaining in the bay area. he was best friends with former mayor willy brown. he had been battling prostate cancer for nearly a year. he was 82 years old. highway 4 in martinez is now open after a fatal crash last night. one person was died, two others are in the hospital this morning. we are expected to recover. the crash happened around 8:30. at least three cars were involved in that crash. in fran wet roads and an abrupt stop by a cabdriver are to blame for an accident regarding a police car. police responded around 5:40 last night. officers say the taxi came to a sudden stop causing a dpt

vehicle to rear end our cab. then the streetcar tried to stop on wet tracks crashing into the dpt vehicle. no one on the streetcar was injured. the dpt employee was sent to the hospital with neck and back pain. a marin county native who was held in an iranian prison for 19 months has been released. jaws president was -- jason rezalan was arrested and charged with he is city an age. he was held longer than any other journalist. we have more on his release and what is next for him. >> jason rezalan is a free man. >> a beautiful day to be alive. >> this woman knows exactly what he's been through. she spent more than a year in prison after she and two other meshes accidentally crossed into iran while hiking. they were held in to cool area

confinement. >> it took me years to recover and i will never be the same and none of us will of that gone through these kind of events. >> rezalaning worked for the washington post. he and his wife were arrested at their home in tehran. once friends and family started an online petition, his wife was freed, but he was not. a friend rezalan spoke with us via skype. >> it's entirely a political plot. and a number of other iranian americans. >> rezalan and four others were released as part of a prisoner exchange. seven iranians in the u.s. were freed. all comes as a landmark nuclear deal is reached with iran. george is a professor of law and has a ph.d. in middle eastern studies. he's sure u.s. relations with iran are turning around. >> i'm optimistic that this is

symbolic of how we can continue to operate with iran in the future. >> the majority of rezalan's family lives in marin. he has dual citizen ships. abc news. >> here are the other prisoners released as part of of the exchange. amir hekmati was in prison three years. he grew up in mont to ray. and an american pastor idaho, and saeed abedini was the pastor and four of the five americans, including rezalan, took off from iran just under an

hour ago and are now headed to switzerland. just hours afterwards about the prisoner release, president obama signed executive order listing economic sanctions on iran. he signed the order after the international atomic agency said they met their commitment regarding a international deal. iran immediately recouped some $100 billion in assets frozen overseas. >> the search is set to resume for a missing ski instructor in placer county. carson may was last seen skiing there on thursday. rescuers have picked up a signal from his phone and have narrowed a search area to 730 square feet. they hope a weather clears this morning so they can launch helicopter search. >> we've seen people survive here three to five days. if you do things right, you can

>> welcome back. to storms are moving in. we will have a wet, wild, windy day ahead. lisa argen is along shortly with the full accuweather forecast. new this morning, vacaville police are looking for these two suspects in connection with a grab-and-run theft in connection with a best buy store. it happened last night at the store in the nut had tree laz os. the surveillance photos show the

suspects inside the best buy. police say they took several mac book pro laptops before running out. officers searched the area for these men, but have not found them. new details in the case of debit card skimmers ripping people off after they fill up with gas. two suspects' photos are release after they stole gas in san almo. there are now 50 victims. officers and anyone who filled up in that shop within the last 630 days to check their bank statements. a man in his 70s ared de after a tour butt ran over him in san francisco. katie was first on the scene shortly it happened. she has the story. >> he was walking the red lights. i'm not sure if he entered the

intersection on a green light or notice. >> frank witnessed the gruesome death of an elderly man who became dropped under a tour bus at this san francisco intersection. >> i saw the man being hit and dropped under the bus and being dragged. i yelled stop, stop, stop. >> the bus, heading north, made add right-hand north on to post street. it's unclear if the man was fully out of the intersection or not. keep in mind the driver sits on the curbside of the bus. >> at the point he's banging on the window, he's on the driver side. >> the question is who had the right-of-way. >> the bus stopped after the rear tires ran over the man. the company's attorney said the driver has been with deluxe for around two years and his mandatory certifications are current. >> he looked kind of shocked. i don't think he knew what happened. >> the tour bus company and the driver are cooperating with the investigation. >> the collision happened around

1:00 in the afternoon. police have interviewed tour bus riders and witnesses. nobody else was injured. they are searching for surveillance footage of the incident. there is a camera on the corner. >> the bus company tells me this is their first fatal accident. all religion strayings and certifications are up-to-date. we are working to verify that with the agencies that oversees tour bus applications. abc7 news. volunteer headquarters are now open in san francisco. yesterday hundreds of volunteers who had already been screened and trained lined up to get their uniforms. most will be working as ambassadors for the super bowl host committee, helping in super bowl city and getting directions on how to get from here to there, place to place. and if you want to be part of it, it's not too late. >> wet are still looking for

is a concern. we have high tide tonight about 6:00 and tomorrow morning definitely some impacts in the north bay. the good news is it's a holiday so most people won't be out on the roads. some light rain small in santa rosa but this is what we are expecting to sink to the south and east. it will take about all day to get through the heart the of the bay. heaviest rain for the most prolonged amount of time will be here in the north bay. that's why we have a glass flood watch until 4:00 tomorrow morning. and a coastal flood warning through 7:00 right after high tide. the burn areaings in lake county, we are worried about that, and the rivers to the north in mendocino county, the the russian river. we will be watching those closely for you. right now it's mild, 63. from the roof camera it looks quiet the. there are areas of fog but not too much of a concern as it was

yesterday. but still pockets out there. low to mid-50s. in emeryville we have morning showers and fog for you. then the rain intensifies today and tonight. there will be a chance of rain for the holiday tomorrow but much, much calmer compared to today. the high surf warning has been extended until tomorrow morning. look at the current wave heights. they are huge, 13 to 17 feet. we are looking at the swells up to 7 feet. very dangerous. the timeline, 9:00 it's raining in the north bay. heavy rain coming down through ukiah and cloverdale. by 2:00 notice most of the bay is getting wet but still the heavy rain is hung up in the north bay and it's 5:00 now. it's beginning to sink south. through the evening hours, 9:00, it is raining, moderate and heavy pockets here and there. 1:00 in the morning the frontal band begins to sink to the south and by 4:00 in the morning the heaviest activity through an is hose, -- san jose.

and look at 7:00 tonight is when things will get interesting for you will through the overnight hours. it will take some time to push through cupertino, and he's areas. monday 2 1/2 inches santa rosa, three quarters inch san jose and san francisco. now, if it stalls we will get more rain. looks like it could get hung up in the south bay. we thought it was going toet go hung up in the north bay so we have to wait and see how it plays out. but the break comings tomorrow. look what happens. overnight we are dry, but by tuesday morning another round of rain and very gusty winds with the next system. so snowfall amounts anywhere from 3 to 8 levels for lake level. above 7,000 feet we are looking at 8 to 14 inches travel concerns in the sierra nevada. raining in the north bay much of the day and the accuweather seven-day forecast, 3 on an impact scale, a break.

and today's nfl action. all those rights tonight at 5:00. emmenic sure man. have aate day. >> lisa, with the storms at least we've had time in between to dry out to reduce the possibility of gladding? >> absolutely -- flooding. >> absolutely. and that's been key. they are getting a tiny bit of a break because rain has begun to fall in parts of the north bay already. drizzly along the coast and even the san mateo coast. then you add in fog, and really the break is very little for folks in marin, sonoma and napa. that's why we have a flash flood watch in effect for those counties. and the storm impact is rating this system a 3. it's a strong one. second time we've had a 3 and that means anywhere from about an inch of rain to 2 1/2 inches coast ali. in the coastal hills you could see as much as 4 inches. it could stall, but the whole system moves through at a rapid pace. we will time it out for you.

right around our sweep, middletown where the burn area is, we are looking at some showers and this is the concern area where a flash flood watch is in effect through tomorrow morning. the heavier rain starts in the morning but it will be to the afternoon else we're. marin, sonoma, napa, particular areas to watch and the coastal flood warning, high tide 6:00 tonight and 6:00 tomorrow morning. tomorrow morning things will be calming down but it's the central coast around san benito, the heavier rain will be falling. 60 mountain view, 56 san francisco. good deal of fog from the east bay to the coast. mid-50s novato. cool spot fairfield. and 56 in santa rosa. so north bay communities picked up somewhere between three quarters an inch and an inch of rain yesterday when the light mist and drizzle and went to

light rain and never let up all day. this morning we had a few mornings showers. the fog, the rain intensifies for everyone today. more like this evening for the south bay then a chance of rain tomorrow for the martin luther king holiday. the high surf warning has been extended until tomorrow. look tea huge wave heights, anywhere from 13 to 17 feet. this is another reason why coastal flooding could be possible. the large, niekroer waves to watch out for. through the afternoon hours the front sinks into the north bay. but by dinnertime heavy rain is slipping into san francisco. the evening hours when san jose, fremont, sunnyvale will see the steadier rain, right on through the overnight hours. here we are 1:00 in the morning and still looking at some pounding rain all across the bay. by 4:00 this is when it sinks to the south and east of us. we will get into the totals which will be quite impressive tomorrow. but as for today in san jose it looks like after the dinner hour
