>> good morning, everyone, i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, january 17th. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> carolyn, good morning. hi, everyone. this is live doppler 7hd where the activity is still far up in northern california. but a few showers in the north bay. mist and drizzle along the coast, as far south as the san mateo coast but we are looking at the heaviest rain throughout the morning hours here in the northbound bay. we had rain that really didn't let up yesterday. the concerns with the burn areas around lake county, and the rivers. you will get heavy rain throughout the entire day. as i widen the view you will see what's on the way for all of us. it will take some time early afternoon to get into san francisco. later in the day through the

south bay, and there's the front. it is tapping into subtropical moisture. that's going to increase the snow levels. in fact, with the winter weather advisory in effect, we have a ton of advisories. a flash flood watch and other coastal flood warning for the entire coast here. so we are looking at a pretty nasty time of it throughout the folks 12 to 18 hours. 57 in hayward right now and along the coast with fog in our east bay. anywhere from a quarter mile visibility to just over a mile at the shoreline. so we will watch out for the rain for you today. but if you are planning your day it's dry to start with scattered showers and fog. then throughout the day the rain increases. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. as lisa just told us, we are expecting one of the strongest storms we've seen this season. abc7 news reporter melanie woodrow shows us how one bay area community is getting prepared for a messy storm.

>> flooding caused a highway 1 closer near valley forge. some trucks managed to get through high-sanding water. the north bay is expecting swung of the strongest storms we've seen this season. >> watch out for the flash floods that we did get a warning for. sandbags are available at several san rafael fire station. the north bay could see localized flooding, mudslides and debris floats. >> if there are trees down or wires down from the winds or anything like that, let us know how we can help. that's what we are here for. >> kim said his home has flooded in the past. >> we live on a ridge so a lot of wind with the elements. >> those elements are expected to continue through sunday night. >> but we are still waiting for the big part of the storm to hit. >> meaning there's still time to pick up a few sandbags. >> right across the street we can fill it up. >> that's our fire department? >> yeah. >> i'm close. you got me thinking.

>> melanie woodrow, abc7 news. >> be especially careful along the ocean today. there's a high surf warning in effect through tonight. abc7 news was in pacifica yesterday where big waves were crashing into the pier. the warning runs all the way from big sur to point reyes. you can track the warnings and the storm warnings by downloading our abc7 news app and click on push alerts for immediate notify takingings. a san francisco fashion icon has died. wilkes bashford started a clothing chain that baird his name back in 1966. he was known for being loyal and for giving back to the community. he sold his stores in 2009, but he stayed on as president. the store on sutter street near union square and one in palo alto are the ones remaining in the bay area. bashford was best friends with

former mayor willie brown. he had been battling prostate cancer for nearly a year. wilkes bashford was 82 years old. highway 4 in martinez is now open after a fatal crash last night. one person was died, two others are in the hospital this morning. they are expected to recover. the crash happened around 8:30. at least three cars were involved in that crash. in san francisco wet roads and an abrupt stop by a cabdriver are to blame for an accident involving a streetcar. police were at market and tenth streets at police responded around 5:40 last night. officers say the taxi came to a sudden stop causing a city dpt vehicle to rear end our cab. then the streetcar tried to stop on wet tracks crashing into the dpt vehicle. no one on the streetcar was injured.

the city employee was sent to the hospital with neck and back pain. a marin county native who was held in an iranian prison for 18 months has been released. jason rezalan was arrested and he was charged with espionage in july of 2014. iran held him longer than any other western journalist. abc7 news reporter lisa amin gulezian has more on his release and what is next for him. >> jason rezalan is a free man. >> a beautiful day to be alive. >> this woman knows exactly what he's been through. she spent more than a year in prison after she and two other americans accidentally crossed into iran while hiking. they were held in cool area confinement. , solitary confinement is like torture. >> it took me years to recover

and i will never be the same and none of us will of that gone through these kind of events. >> rezalan worked for the washington post. he and his wife were arrested at their home in tehran. once friends and family started an online petition, his wife was freed, but he was not. a friend rezalan spoke with us via skype. >> he was innocent from the beginning and it was entirely a political plot against him and a number of other iranian americans. >> rezalan and four others were released as part of a prisoner exchange. other iranians held in the u.s. were freed. all this comes as a landmark nuclear deal is reached with iran. george is a professor of law and has a ph.d. in middle eastern studies. he's sure u.s. relations with iran are turning around. >> i'm optimistic that this is symbolic of how we can continue to operate with iran in the future. >> the majority of rezalan's family lives in marin.

he has dual citizenships. he moved to iran in 2008. abc7 news. >> here are the other prisoners released as part of of the exchange. amir hekmati was in prison three years. he grew up in nebraska and michigan and attended the language institute in monterey while in the marines. an iranian-american pastor sad ab of boise, idaho was in prison for his christian faith. a third baseman, not a lot of information is known about him. and a fourth student is an american student and researcher. he traveled in iran in september for a four-month language program. four of the five americans, including rezalan, took off from iran about two hours ago. they are now headed to switzerland. and just hours after word of that prisoner release, president obama signed an executive order listing economic sanctions on

iran. the president signed the order after the international atomic agencied said iran met their commitments in a landmark nuclear deal. removing those sanctions allows iran to repup some one hundred billion dollars in assets that had been frozen overseas. >> the search is set to resume for a missing ski instructor in placer county. carson may was last seen skiing there on thursday. rescuers have picked up a signal from his phone and have narrowed a search area to 730 square feet. they hope a weather clears this morning so they can launch helicopter search. >> we've found people on this mountain and other mountains after three to five days. if you do things right, you can survive. if you build a snow cave, you can probably last the winter. >> rain and snow are expected to continue in the area with

temperatures in the lower 30s. is there anything else you can say about the weather there, lisa? >> winter weather advisory not until 4:00 this afternoon. it's in the 20s right now and temperatures will be cold enough for snow at the higher elevations but lower elevation wes could see a little rain-snow mix a live look outadvise from emeryville where it's 57 degrees right now. it will be a dry start to your sunday, but about three quarters of an inch of rain is on the way for you and parts of our east bay shoreline. we will talk about the heavier rain and the flood watches and warnings which are up in the north bay. that's in a few minutes. >> also ahead, super bowl 50 now just three weeks away. it's not too late to get involved. how you can still volunteer. also later, early morning tornadoes touched down on the florida coast, killing at least two people. we will show you the devastation.

>> welcome back. flash flood warnings are in effect. very heavy rain coming our way. it is slow-moving so it might be dry outside right now but trust, a big storm is on the way. new this morning, vacaville police are looking for these two men in connection with a grab-and-run theft in connection with a best buy store. it happened last night at the store in the nut tree plaza. the surveillance photos show the suspects inside the best buy. police say they took several mac book pro laptops before running out. officers searched the area for these men, but have not found them. new details in the case of debit card skimmers ripping people off after they fill up with gas. authorities in marin county have released photos of two suspects accused of stealing thousands of dollars at the gas and shop in san almo.

there are now 50 victims. officers and anyone who filled up in that shop within the last 60 days is asked to check their bank statements. a man in his 70s is dead after a tour bus ran over him in san francisco. katie was first on the scene shortly it happened. she has the story. the intersection of post street. >> he was walking the red lights. i'm not sure if he entered the intersection on a green light or notice. >> frank witnessed the gruesome death of an elderly man who became trapped under a tour bus at this san francisco intersection. >> i saw the man being hit and dropped under the bus and being dragged. i yelled stop, stop, stop. >> the bus, heading north, made add right-hand north on to post street. the man was heading south. it's unclear if the man was fully out of the intersection or not. keep in mind the driver sits on the curbside of the bus. >> at the point he's banging on the window, he's on the driver side.

>> it's early in the investigation to say who had the right-of-way. >> the driver of the bus stopped after the rear tires ran over the man. the company's attorney said the driver has been with deluxe for around two years and his mandatory certifications are current. >> he looked kind of shocked. i don't think he knew what happened. >> the tour bus company and the driver are cooperating with the investigation. >> the collision happened around 1:00 in the afternoon. police have interviewed tour bus riders and witnesses. nobody else was injured. they are searching for surveillance footage of the intersection. there is a camera on the corner. >> the bus company tells me this is their first fatal accident. and all religion strayings and certifications are up-to-date. we are working to verify that with the agencies that oversees tour bus applications. and tour bus regulations.

abc7 news. super bowl volunteer headquarters are now open in san francisco. yesterday hundreds of volunteers who had already been screened and trained lined up to get their uniforms. most will be working as ambassadors for the super bowl host committee, helping in super bowl city and giving directions on how to get from place to place. and if you want to be part of it, it's not too late. >> we are still looking for volunteers. if people are interested, we are always happy to take in the excited person who wants to come and be part of it and help welcome people to our region. >> wet are expecting about one million visitors. yesterday volunteers got a four of the area around the embarcadero and market street where super bowl city will be set up. volunteers will work the week leading up to super bowl but not on game day. >> the wallmart store on edge

water drive in oakland is one of 269 that will close permanently. 400 workers from the oakland store will lose their jobs. another to store on monterey highway in san jose will close? -- close in two weeks. the possibility of dungeness crab season opening in the next five months has complicated governor brown's efforts to determine if an economic disaster will be declared. according to the press democrat, aid efforts for the fishermen have started since they lost much of their income during the busy holiday season. fishermen make 80% of their income off crab during that season. so far the sonoma county regional parks have raised $22,000 for the fishermen. if you are headed up to the sierra today, be careful. this is the look at i-80 in castle peak last night. the roads look clear now but condition could get messy with

today's storm. just ask lisa argen. she knows all about it. >> above 6500 feet is where you are going to get the heavier snow and them the winter weather advisory, 4:00 this afternoon for the tahoe basin. the incoming system is rated as a 3. anywhere from a half-inch of rain to 2 inches of rain. we already saw an inch in the north bay because of the burn areas, the high tide. this is why this system coming in throughout the afternoon will create some problems in the north bay. so the rest of the bay it will be a healthy rain and there's one quickly on the heels of this one. so live doppler 7hd in santa rosa and points north, you be can see a little bit of activity from clear lake to middletown and cloverdale. also sea ran be. getting wet. but further to the north this is what we are expecting throughout the day today to sink to the south and east and bring the rain to the city by the afternoon. the south bay, it looks more like the evening for you. we widen the view and this is

the powerful system that's sending up subtropical moisture many we could get a little bit of a wave on the front which means it could stall out in a particular area and bring heavier rain for a longer period of time. the actual system does show it moving through at a pretty good clip. we will have to watch it closely. the flash flood in effect through tomorrow morning and the coastal flood warning. high tide about 6:00 this evening and 6:00 tomorrow morning. from the exploratorium camera there's fog and for the most part we are dry. san francisco 56. 58 mountain view, 53 morgan hill. half moon bay had fog but a filed 67 degrees. outside here you will notice temperatures are in the 50s. the atmosphere is not moving. it's pretty still. so feels kind of muggy out there from the delta to santa rosa at 57 degrees. so the atmosphere is saturated with moisture. so it's not going to take m%ch to get the rain going in the north bay. then the rain will intensify

throughout the day, the evening hours, and then a chance of rain tomorrow for the martin luther king, jr. holiday. but for the most part it should be a high day. the high surf warning has been extended until this afternoon with these waves tomorrow morning really ramping up. anywhere from 13 to possibly 20 feet. here are the current wave heights. dangerous conditions with the high surf warning there. look how the rain stays in the north bay for much of the morning hours. the heaviest rain still north of cloverdale, 2:00. but by 5:00 we have heavy rain pushing along the coast. and right here, this rain not really letting up much. so that's why we are looking at perhaps some of the rivers coming out of their banks up around mendocino county. about 5:00 tonight we have the rain in hayward, and fremont. and right on through the overnight hours through san jose and sunnyvale. the central coast will get into the act late, and by 4:00 in the morning things really quiet down. so we will look for the rainfall intensity in san jose to get going about 6:30, 7:00.

and there after just continue for maybe three quarters of an inch of rain, maybe a half-inch around mountain view. certainly favoring the north bay. remember there's another one on the way at 2:00 on tuesday. here it is. monday we are dry and just a few showers. but then look what happens overnight into tuesday. the second system with gustier winds, a 2 on the storm impact scale, will give us another inch. rain, 3 to 8 inches at lake level. very tough traveling on the way home tomorrow. advised not to do that. that would be the best advice. 60 cop cord, 61 santa cruz and the accuweather seven day forecast. so a break somewhat tomorrow. then wednesday, thursday a bigger break. but another 2 on our scale coming in the end of the week. >> so a lot of people have the king holiday off. and it will be dry. >> yes. it should be nice. >> thank you, lisa. still ahead, the big reveal next. the new public home for this

argen. >> hello, carolyn. we've got our eyes on the 3, the storm impact scale rating this system as a 3 and rain is already beginning in cloverdale, geyserville, heelsburg. and this area here under a flash flood watch for some very heavy rain. i widen the view and you notice what is to the north. this will all sink to the south and east. hang out a bit in the north bay for the first half of the day. then sink to the south and east, sweep over the entire bay area for the afternoon, the evening, overnight hours and finally end toward tomorrowful it's got a subtropical connection. it's a powerful system and there's one right on top of it that will head our way into tuesday. a coastal flood warning from all the way down through the sonoma coast, mill valley, sausalito. you know, the problem areas. and also for the base sip down here the with a flash flood watch marin, sonoma, napa, and south winds ahead of the system. 52 sapp ramone. foggy concord. 57, foggy at the coast.

george stephanopoulos at 8:00 this morning right here on abc 7. this morning a high surf remains in effect as the search for 12 marines is expanded off the coast of o'ahu. the storm struck friday after a helicopter crash. it covers waters off the western coast, in addition to the north shore. rescuers from the coast guard, navy, police department, all combing the shoreline for debris. high surf it disbursing it and complicating safety efforts. >> our main safety message is that if someone sees something, we do want them the housekeeping olympics call and report but we don't want them to touch it. we just want them to allow the professionals to step in and recover that debris. >> two helicopters, each carrying six marines, went down late thursday. initial reports say the choppers collided mid-air, but a marine spokesperson said the investigation is not complete. developing news this morning.

an autopsy has determined that abc7 producer ann swainey of our sister station in chicago was strangled to death in central america. she was traveling alone in belize last week when her body was found in a river friday morning. officials saying she died from asphyxia and blunt force trauma to the head and neck area. a motive is not clear. police are still looking for her killer. good morning america will have much more coming up at 7:00 this morning. we are learning an american missionary is among the 28 victims killed by al-qaeda fighters. the hotel and cafe attack happened friday night in the western african nation. 45-year-old michael rittering of brouwer county, florida, ran an orphanage and crisis center for women with his wife. he leaves behind four children. two of them were adopted from that country. one survivor of the attack said

she had to play dead to stay alive. in australia a car about plowed into a gas station, nearly hitting a woman. surveillance video shows the woman walking inside the convenience store when all of a sudden, look at that! a car flies into the store. it looks like she was hit, but the car just missed her. three people inside that car were hurt and taken to the hospital. police are investigating what caused the excellent and whether alcohol was a factor. the storm impact scale. bringing in anywhere from a half-inch to two inches of rain. and the second system on it's heels with much gustier winds. >> each one is different. this one being influenced by subtropical moisture and we are beginning to see some returns around the sweep on mount st. helena. pope valley, this is where the national weather service has already put a flash flood watch in effect for the burned, scarred areas. likely flooding here, maybe mudslides and maybe rivers to the north will rise temporarily out of their banks home -- tomorrow morning and then recede. you can see all the clouds associated this. this is that subtropical stretch that will be bringing in a lot of moisture throughout the next 24 hours. so it will start with the watches and warnings from the coastal flood warning, all the way from the north coast, which includes the likely areas of mill valley, sausalito, and this

area down to the south. looking at the flash flood watch, march rip, sonoma, napa, creeks will likely come out of their banks for a short time where the heavy rain gets started in the morning. it's a quick mover. it could stall out either in the north bay or at the tail end of it across san benito county. we will have to wait and see. upper 50s for oakland and mountain view. it is mild. the south winds ahead of the system and the ladened moisture in the atmosphere allowing for the moisture to allow for mist and drizzle and some early morning showers. but the main activity, a little bit later today. 57 santa rosa, 52 concord. fog from our friends in the east bay valleys, concord and livermore, san ramon and also along the coast. so we've got fog, maybe some morning showers. the rain intensifies throughout the day. the evening, the overnight hours. then just a chance for the martin luther king, jr. holiday tomorrow. then we will get into the

second, the third, the possibly fourth system. high surf warning through 4:00 tomorrow morning where the waves continue to ramp up right along the coast. 16 to 20-foot swells possible. with he are already close to that. very dangerous at the coast. you will notice the rain staying up to the north throughout the morning hours. but at 2:00 in the afternoon the rain slowly sinking through marin and sonoma county, san francisco. and the afternoon, the dinner hour we have rain on the coast and across the bay. the peninsula, the south bay throughout the evening, overnight hours. and san jose looking pretty wet, as well as hayward and fremont toward the early morning hours. then by the holiday, the rain light ended up. you to see a few scattered showers and it will remain cloudy about you a chance to dry out monday. look at san jose. 7:00 tonight is when the rain will start and then it really don't stop. but the rainfall amounts favoring the north bay. you can see one to two inches here with a half-inch and three

sales to the oakland public schools and he's hoping other restaurant owners will follow. education reporter lyanne melendez has the details. >> helping oakland public schools is something chef james syhabout felt obligated to do. >> i went to oakland public schools, so did my wife. we have two small children and we've been here for 30-plus years. >> the chef and owner of three restaurants here will donate 5% of a customer's bill to the oakland public education fund. the money will then be distributed among all oakland schools. >> we will work with school leaders across the system to identify some of the commonly held need across our schools last year chef syhabout raised $9,000. >> this year hopefully we will raise a little bit more. and my hope is to have other restaurant owners to latch on.
