dark rain clouds are looming and the golden gate bridge camera shows a slick drive. drew? >> for much of the day, it was really just some light showers that were falling across much of the north bay. right now, live doppler 7hd is nicely filling in. notice we are seeing in heavier pockets developing. on street level, notice right around petaluma novato. the moderate showers that are developing. east bay, oakland, 880, al immediate dark san leandro, heavier showers developing. we'll widen the picture and show you the south bay. the radar is filling in and off the coast, heavier showers developing along the cold front. this is a slow-moving system going to make its way through the bay area over the next six to 12 hours. the storm impact scale -- abc7

storm impact scale -- ail winter we're grading storms. one to five, one light, five severe. help you plan the night ahead. so tonight, this is a three. a strong storm with the soaking showers. heaviest north bay. everybody should see at least half inch of rain. we have flashflood watches in effect off the coast. the full forecast is coming up. >> emergency repairs underway on a sinkhole at the pacifica pier batteredded by pounding waves. >> reporter: you can't help but feel bad for some of these department of public works employees. they've been out here since 7:00 this morning and that's when somebody discovered the sinkhole during a patrol. waves basically crushed the sidewalk. they knew this might happen so they tide have these big eight to ten-ton boulders on standby,

not too far from here. they've been killing the sinkhole all day with theobalders, trying to preserve whatever material might still be underneath the promenade. it is a solution that for right now is temporary. >> we'll reassess the condition. >> they're all pretty excited so they wanted to come out here once they heard there was digger moving rocks and putting dirt in a hole. >> reporter: the hole is about 40 feet long by eight feet wide. again, it is a problem for the city, but it's been a lot of fun for the spectators who came out here today. live in pacifica, abc7~news. >> thank you very much. a tree fell down and took some power lines with it in the oak land hills on banning drive. pg&e santa crew to the scene to repair the damaged power lines. it knocked out power to 11 homes and businesses.

with us. we could possibly use it on the air 0 are at abc7news.com. today, marin county search and rescue teams joined the effort to find a missing ski instructor who has been missing three days in placer county. carson may disappeared. search crews folked on a small area where another skier reported seeing tracks and also where they pinged may's phone. they no longer have signal from the phone because they believe the batteries dead. 31 searchers and two dog teams were out there this morning. the area has had a lot of avalanching activity. >> some areas we can't touch because there's avalanche danger. >> hopeful, prepare for the worst. >> rain and snow are keeping crews from conducting an air search. two helicopters are on stanby in case the weather clears.

>> someone broke into the loma vest sta immersion academy charter school last night. a security alarm went off around 7:00 45. officers found several classroom doored had been forced occupy and inside the classrooms they found substantial damage. the balances sprayed fire extinguishers in the classrooms and left baloney slices on windows. >> a journalist from marin county who whats held in an iranian prison is in north americanie. this is a photo of jason rezaian. he'll receive medical treatment before he comes back to the u.s. he was one of five prisoners released. a childhood friend led an online campaign to bring the journalist home as iran accused him of spying. >> i can't wait to see him again. >> his brother in mill valley released a statement on behalf of the family, addressing the worldwide support the family has

friend are sharing memories of a man dedicated to his work who brought style and class to san francisco. wilkes bashford died at his home. he started a clothing chain in 1966. he was a local fixture in the city, known for charitable work, in the performing arts and with the war memorial veterans building. he had been battling cancer, former mayor willie brown says he was a friend and we lost a piece of the city. >> he cared very much about all kinds of things that seem to make the city really work. >> in a statement mayor ed lee said we were fortunate to have called him a true friend of our city.

san francisco will not be the same without him. hex bashford was 82 years old. in less than an hour, the only walmart store in oakland will close for good. it's one of two stores in the bay area being closed by the retail giant. walmart recently revealed plans to shut down about 150 stores across america, and 260 worldwide. the retail giant says the doomed stores haven't performed as expected. one shopper fears for the hundreds of walmart workers soon to be unemployed. >> all of a sudden have families to take care of, and probably don't know what they're going to do. i'm praying they will help them out and get a better start. i'm sad about the walmart closing. >> in san jose, other walmart workers will lose their jobs as well when this store on monterrey highway closes in less than two weeks. workers get severance pay and training classes to help them find news jobs. >> up next, failure to land for spacex but not all is lost. what scientist learn about the

>> everything looked good for spacex after liftoff today as the california based company prepared to make the first ever rocket landing at search. scientist learned from two previous crashes and a successful landing on solid ground last month. today the thrusters appeared to be working well but it still crashed on landing. elon musk tweeted this photo. saying touchdown speed was okay but a leg lockout. latch didn't catch so the rocket tipped over. musk says ship landings are necessary for high altitude missions. his team will have several more tries. a they launched a satellite that

will measure ocean height. >> we have high surf warning in effect and a little flooding north bay. live doppler 7hd, what we're tracking right now is the intensity of the rain in the north bay. going to process you -- press you into street level. and this is some heavy rain that is developing off of some heavier pockets of rain and pockets in the north bay that will transition across all of the bay area through the next couple of hours. heavier pockets on the east bay, around oakland, speed -- piedmont, alameda. we have showers where the rain is beginning to start. fremont, the lighter indications on live doppler 7hd indicating the lighter showers. it's not a chilly rain out there. current temperatures under a mild south wind, 50s and low 60s. right now, san jose, light sprinkles, 61.

so, here's the storm impact scale here at abc7. all winter we're grading each winter storm on a scale with one to five, one being light and five the most severe, and knowing the impact of the storm will help you plan your night. so, with tonight's system, three on the storm impact scale. a strong storm, heavier showers in the north bay. most locations will likely pick up anywhere from half inch to inch of moisture. hour-by-hour, pick out where you live. 9:00 tonight, north bay, heavy showers. by midnight, the tops of the yellows take over, indicating moe locations seeing downpours, monday morning, 2:00, north bay drying out but steady showers south of the golden gate, and then tomorrow morning, 5:00, 6:00, isolate shower is possible but the system wraps up and we're left with cloud cover. total rain, expecting heaviest showers in the north bay, but

some place inch and a half to inch. flashflood watch in effect for the north, meaning the potential is there for flooding. we're keeping our eyes on the river. minor flooding along the novarro river, cresting tomorrow morning, foot and a half above flood stage, and a coastal flood warning in effect with the rain and high surf. could city flooding along the immediate coast, and he high surf warning goes until tomorrow morning, where waves, 12 feet, could go as high as 19 feet. the winter storm warning tomorrow, a winter weather advisory around lake tahoe. in overnight tonight, here's your numbers. showers intense identifying right now. we're in the 50s overnight and then tomorrow, early morning shower, otherwise left over with clouds. the accuweather seven-day
