i'm ama daetz in for kristin, and i'm dan ashley. this is the new span of the bridge right before the center sank r anchorage, to show you a bit of backups that continues and will for some time as a result of this protest. >> on a holiday, you would want all of that to be green, but not the case today. our alan wang is live on the phone for us as we're looking at the map to tell us the situation now. you've been talking to people stuck in this? >> reporter: yes, ama and dan, almost all the lanes are open. traffic is flows except for the far two left-hand lanes which they were using to tow away the cars, the protesters that they used to get up here. also they are arresting, the last few of them, taking them off of the bridge. they say about 40 to 45 people
5:01 pm
were arrested for unlawful assembly and disrupting traffic. about ten of those people actually chained themselves to cars and stretched themselves across all the lanes, shutting down traffic about an hour ago. this play was a parking lot. and you have westbound lanes, people were walking around, people with dogs walking, taking pictures. it was shut down. they did hand out -- there was a support group, as i mentioned for these actual people who were chained across the road. they were passing out flyers, as the mlk shut it down hours, 96 hours of direct action of course on this holiday. they were calling attention to the health issue foss african americans, along with a list of deman demands. the big issue or the delay was just getting bolt cutters up here and through all of the traffic that was just bumper to bumper, still on the bridge. once they got those bolt cutters
5:02 pm
up there. they werible to cut the lock and chains. they were very about chains, but they did it pretty fast considering what has transpired here, and now as you can see, traffic is flowing on the westbound bridge pretty good up here. back to you guys. >> alan, thank you roche. they did responsibility quickly, and consider how big a backup and what a big me it was, people moved peacefully. you're not kidding, we saturday here watching them cull those -- they were pretty heavy gauge chains. >> you could still see some of the people sitting off the side there. another look that we take from live over the scene. traffic is still, you know, being slowed, but vic lee is actually overlooking traffic at yerba buena. we can see it behind you there,
5:03 pm
vic. >> reporter: let me show you another look. that's the west span of the bay bridge. most of the lanes are open. as alan said, to my right of the screen, those 1, 2 lanes are occupied by it is chp and first responders who came here pretty quickly to arrest and detain protesters. as alan said, it started with about 40 of them, they unfurled a banner which read "black health matters." again this group called themselves the black seed. another group calling themselves black choir liberati-- queer li. they must be part of that collective, part of that collective of groups that wanted direct action during martin luther king holiday weekend. so presumably this is sort of the fringe, the radical fringe
5:04 pm
of that group. they are being chained, arrested, excuse me, and detained by chp. traffic is starting to flow. some of their demands, according to a press release we received at the station, called for the -- to stop the funding of police departments with city money. they want mayor libby schaff to resign. they want the firing of the police chief in san francisco and oakland police chief. again these two groups we haven't heard from before, but they sure did a heck of a job disrupting traffic here on the bay bridge. >> vice president ic, thank you very much. chp handled this. officers williams, are you there? >> yes. >> give us a sense, a walk-through quickly of what is
5:05 pm
going to happen to get traffic fully moving? >> right now, we actually have the right three lanes open. we have about eight to ten persons to load up in the vehicles, which is why we still have the left lanes closed, for their safety. it should be in the next ten minutes transporting them to the chp officer for processing and booking into the county jail. >> now, officer williams, from our vantage point, it appeared that the protesters were pretty calm. can you tell us a bit about what it was like down there? >> one more time, please, ma'am?
5:06 pm
>> it doesn't seem too tense, a lot of people yelling, protesters. can you tell us what it was like for the officers, the exchanges? >> sure. when we came on scene, they had blocked all five lanes. the protesters had changed themselves to -- but fortunately -- and the -- actually didn't have any force at all to move them to the side of the freeway. they all went. for the most part they all cooperat cooperated. >> that'sy to hear. clearly it looked like the protesters cooperated. >> and certainly the police, your officers looked like they were very determined to keep things from escalating. i know after all the protests this summer, that mish a high
5:07 pm
priority these days. >> anytime we can defuse the situation, that's obviously a preferred method of clearing the situation. in this case western fortunately able to do that. again -- >> okay. officer vu williams, thanks for coming on. we appreciate it. >> okay. thank you, sir. >> we're continuing to take a live look. the protesters were part of a much larger and continually peaceful, like we have seen here, protest in oak learned. >> they gathered at city hall, and marched into emeryville. that's where elissa harrington is. >> reporter: it was supposed to end here in emeryville, but
5:08 pm
quite a few continued on to the bay bridge. >> they wanted to come out here, to raise awareness, also popular mall is built on a native-american burial ground. roughly 1,000 demonstrators gathered in oakland to take part in re-claim mlk, a movement to push his legacy beyond the "i have a dream" speech and focus on his global struggle for human rights. >> one thing we think is left out of the discussion oftentimes is his legacy enter nationalism. he connected with what was happening here, gent risk, racism, with what was happening abroad, just as in the war in vietnam. >> demonstrations of labor groups to third-world resistance marched in solidarity. >> we want a society that ends racism. we are far from it. >> this is the fourth day of
5:09 pm
protest, spanning 96 hours, organizers say it's important of defending the black community especially in the bay where many are pushed out by gentrification, and many are outraged by police violence. >> she wes protester takes comfort knowing that his struggles mirror theirs. >> a lot of times some of the things he did didn't make people comfortable, and a lot of those things -- but in actuality he was faced with a lot of confrontation. >> >> reporter: traffic is moving again, but a bit earlier it was really bad. one woman who lives in the area tells me she's never seen anything like this. that's when things were happening on the bay bridge when the demonstrators were blocking lanes of traffic. it is still slow out here, but
5:10 pm
again cars are moving. elissa harrington, abc 7 news. >> thank you very much. we wanting to back to leah robinson-leach. what is the latest now? you talk about how quickly you got things moving there, and it appears traffic is going again at this point? >> yes, that was our priority, to ensure the safety of all, and then to move that traffic as quickly as possible. we were quite pleased that had been the case. we will look at all the circumstances and facts which played out today, and examine how we can go forward to ensure protesting does not impact the -- in a way -- >> all right. leah, thanks soech. how long longer would you expect until you're able to open all lanes of traffic? >> we're looking in the next 20
5:11 pm
minutes or so. we want to allow the chp to do their jobs and to continue to ensure the safety of all the involved. >> thank you, leah. for anybody else out there who might be watching us, and maybe you were out there, had pictures, were able to take them safely, perhaps they would get their on air. >> i just retweeted, someone sent in a couple photos on my twitter account, so we'll get them out there. it's another way to tell the story. we are streaming sky 7 hd on our news app for the latest developments on this story and any push alerts, we'll let you know when traffic is fully back to normal. but at least three lanes. >> all lanes will reopen. now we want to get on to what else is going on throughout
