the big apple. carl. sgrirchgts a place that is usually full of life and traffic. tonight it's just full of snow. >> tonight millions of americans in the northeast still socked in from the crippling snowstorm. >> didn't expect to be caught in the middle of snowzilla. >> even the d.c. police chief stepping in to shovel out patrol cars. so much snow the plows can't keep up. at the jersey shore roads flooding with chunks of ice floating by and water levels reaching eight feet. governor chris christie praising residents who heeded the early warning to evacuate. >> this is my 17th snow emergency in six years, so we know how to do this. >> further west in pittsburgh. >> it's just been one after another truck stuck. it's just nonstop, and it's just seeming like we're getting anywhere, to be honest.

from the white house in washington d.c. one of the city's pounded by thñ drew, how much snow did they get? >> can you see from the shot in washington d.c., and in new york city, the snow has stopped falling and the form is it pulling away from the coast. live doppler 7 hd, it's the back end of the storm. in the wake of it has dropped feet of snow. look at the snow totals. somewhere fk international just outside new york city, single biggest snowfall on record near 28 inches. new york city, the second biggest snowfall. philadelphia coming in at 22.4 inches. baltimore, its biggest snowstorm on record. near 30 into the snow. dulles international just outside of washington waushlt. its second biggest snowfall on record, and washington d.c. 22.2 inches of snow. speaking of the nation's capital, this sixty picture sent to me on my twitter page, you can see the cars are just buried in feet of snow. it's going to take a while to dig out of this one. the storm has taken a lot of energy out of the atmosphere and the lower 48. it's going to enter a rather quiet weather pattern.

we'll let you know what that means in the lower bay krar area. >> thank you very much. in a related note, this was a common sight along the east coast today. stopped cars in washington d.c. drivers were helping those stuck drivers pushing, digging, and helping tow those vehicles. >> snow plows didn't stop working at reagan national airport. official saz normal flight operations there and at dulles international they are expected to remain closed through tomorrow. because of the blizzard on the east coast, more than 12,000 flights had been canceled, including more than 3,000 for the tomorrow. abc 7 news was at sfo where 41 departures and 31 arrivals to and from the area were scrubbed today. just one flight out of oakland's airport was canceled, and there were no east coast flights scheduled at san jose. airlines were hoping to get flights back up and running tomorrow afternoon. new at 11:00 lawyers for raymond trip boy chow are making another effort to get him out of his legal troubles.

they want the trial judge off the case accusing him of a conflicts of interest. those charges include murder, conspiracy to commit murder and racketeering. chow is scheduled to come sentenceed in march. >> the lights are back on at the bay bridge. the chp confirms there was a partial power out ajs on the western span that knocked out of the some of the lights illuminated in the towers, and the bridge deck. it all started about 5:30 this afternoon. the power came back on at about 9:45 tonight. no word on what hit has caused that outage. >> a man from los altos is accused of murder, and they're still looking for the man he is accused of killing. yesterday co-workers reported kyle myrick from gp sports, a am motorcycle from the cambridge park area of san jose. today police arrested steve labos for the murder. investigators found a crime

welcome back. safety officials in pacifica can keep a close eye on home a crumbling hillside. massive waves are pounding against the shore there. further undermining a cliff that's been eroding for years. abc 7 news reporter sergio is live in pacifica with more on this story. sergio. >> and most of the -- most of pacifica's downtown beach front has been cordoned off out of an abundance of safety and because crews are continuing to clear up. today the city manager declared a state of emergency. >> police were posted along the pacifica waterfront to keep people away from high surf and the damaged walkway. >> every day when you step outside -- >> in dramatic video you can see several yards of the cliff near

esplenade avenue and pacifica fall away. further exposing a line of apartments to the ocean below below. >> i don't think even we knew how bad it was until yesterday or the day before when we started happening with people's houses that are now on the edge of the cliff. >> two apartment buildings had been condemned over the years, but officials are now watching a third just to marcs residents are safe. pacifica city manager lawyer where i sinfo has taken the unusual step of assuring a state of emergency. >> it's a series of issues. none of which is truly catastrophic, but when you take them together, they are clearly outpacing what the city can do to respond. >> for sky 7 hd, can you see what she's talking about. a long beach boulevard, a sinkhole opened up and swallowed a chunk of the walkway.

>> first segment of california's bullet train could open in the bay area. state officials are now reconsidering a 2012 decision to build the first operating segment from burbank into the central valley. according to the los angeles times, the real authority is now studying an alternative building that segment into the bay area running trains from san jose to bakersfield. >> more than 200 children in the east bay will have new books, classroom supplies, and technology after a big fundraiser tonight. abc 7 news was in fremont for the first gala to support the fremont unified chinese immersion program for the sixth year students as young as kindergarten learned mandarin as part of their education. tonight included martial arts performances, a chinese nine course dinner and ralph drawings. free mobt's mayor is a big supporter. his own son is in the program. i know from personal experience, when i learned a foreign language, it helped me in other grades as well. >> abc 7 news reporter david

louie mc'ed tonight's event. >> abc 7 news was on main street where volunteers planted 49 trees. it's one of several bay area urban forestry events taking part in the super bowl 50 environmental program. scott kelly is watch it closely from the international space station. earlier today he tweet thissed photo saying rare thunder snow adviseible from space. tonight kelly tweeted this photo of the east coast peeking through that storm. one of washington d.c.'s more popular residents spent part of the day playing outside in the snow. the national zoo posted this picture rolling around in the fresh powder and maybe trying to make some snow angels.

>> live doppler 7 hd in the bay area, it's a quiet cam. we're dealing with a blend of clouds and stars out there. we are dealing with scattered showers for much of the day, and that allowed us to get a few rain boy pictures, and this one tweeted out by the national parks alcatraz island. can you see a beautiful rainbow across the bay. you look rather los to the top of your screen, it looks like a second rainbow is trying to fall earlier this afternoon. the big question, how is this doing for the drought? we're still well into the drought. we have three feet of rain to make up the drought that four year we saw without many rainfall stats. look at the numbers now. we're dealing pretty well. most areas are above average. we need several seasons like this to really make up the rain deaf set. we're having good news here. some snowfall in the see air wra to talk about over the past 24 hours. mammoth lake, 11 inches. north star about nine inches of snow. north star, about half a foot of

snow in terms of our snow pack. it's rather healthy. the northern and central sierra. southern sierra, slilgs below normal. look at statewide, we're above normal and doing much better than a year ago. this time last year only 30% of normal. early morning areas of fog first thing. i think the best chance to see that fog, the north bay and the east bay. throughout the day, it's going to be a mixture of clouds and sun out there. we'll see a die afternoon. temperatures in the upper 50s to around 50 degrees, and partly cloudy skies later in the evening. what we are seeing set up rather active pattern the past seven days. lots of storms, but now building off the coast. high pressure. that does deflect the storm track. any storm that tries to come near us, can you go well into canada. we're going to stay dry. look at this. our rain chances, our patterns

sgha consult on video. a gripe escaped the path of a wildfire. guides were helping the group navigate near a small stream before a warning was shouted in & a deluge of rocks appeared. the group had less than a minute to get out of the way. an argentinian mountain near uploaded this video to youtube. new video from the pacific tsunami warning center reenacts what likely happened on january 26th, 1700 when a massive earthquake struck the pacific northwest. the shaking lasted up to five minutes. a tsunami reached japan nine hours later and caused massive destruction. no major earthquake has happened along the cascade zone since then. geologist saz one could happen any day.

good evening. i'm eric thomas. in tonight's headlines, the first day of street closures for super bowl 50 caused major gridlock in san francisco. streets are closed around downtown. they set up super bowl city. a san francisco transet agency spokesman urges anyone coming to this area to use public transportation through february 7th. in pacifica construction crews are working to shore up homes along a crumbling hillside. the city is asking for state and federal help to combat major erosion problems, putting several homes at risk and creating dangerous sinkholes. the massive snowstorm in the east coast is expected to end tomorrow morning. at least 14 deaths are blamed on the storm. some areas are digging out for more than three feet of snow.

more than 12,000 flights have been canceled. in new jersey the storm is causing coastal flooding. it's the most powerful to hit the jersey store shore since superstorm sandy. here's the damage. >> up and down the new jersey coast there is sever flooding with barrier islands like this one the hardest hit. virtually every street here is under water. >> tonight the jersey shore getting slammed by a massive nor'easter. roads flooded. chunks of ice passing by this front yard in ocean city. the storm surge up to eight feet. >> these streets are still flooded, and it is low tide. look at the water just coming in to this home. let me show you what happened at high tide when the water was waist high. it just carried that picnic table into the center of the street. >> reporter: emergency workers rescuing residents trapped in their homes. some families attempting to evacuate on their own. >> alex, what are you doing out here? >> trying to get to my mother.

>> i think i'll be a better president because of your generosity and being part of this process and talking with me. >> at her own campaign event tomorrow, clinton said the endorsement means a lot to her. the paper said the former secretary of state has demonstrated that she's a thoughtful, hard-working public serbant who has earned the respect of leaders at home and abroad. michael bloomberg, the former mayor of new york city, says he seriously is considering running for president as an independent. a source close to the 73-year-old told cnn that he sees the race becoming increasingly polarized, and neither side fits his views. he has previously said he would consider entering the race if it appeared donald trump or senator ted cruz would face senator bernie sanders. bloomberg will make his decision sometime in march.

tonight an intense manhunt is underway for three fugitives who escaped from orange county's maximum security jail in santa ana. the men are considered extremely dangerous. they're charged with crimes ranging from torture to murder. police and search dogs scoured the street and they're focussing on the jailhouse roof top. >> the inmates cut their way through the plumbing tunnels and ultimately gained access to an unsecure area of the roof. >> they're last seen friday morning. >> a new effort to fight cancer is underway at ucsf. meet the local teach whoer benefitted from the new drug therapy. also, from the carolinas to cape cod. mother nature's reminder that once in a while everybody can use a snow day.
