>> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, january 24th. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn. good morning. live doppler 7hd shows a system offshore. that's where it's going to stay but we are waking up with valley fog in napa. temperatures have dipped considerably compared to yesterday. we still have a few showers lingering hearing on the coast from pescadero southward and i'm not going to rule out a shower later on today. still a slight chance of showers in the forecast but this morning with partly cloudy skies it is 37 degrees in napa, 50 in san mateo, 46 in san jose, so

considerably cooler. we do have fog and we will continue to see some of the fog develop in our inland valleys. so upper 30s to near 50, and we will see some sunshine today with 50s to near 60 in oakland. possibility of a shower, but the pattern will remain dry. in fact, with sunnier and milder days coming up until the latter part of the week. we will talk about it coming up. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. breaking news out of alaska this morning. a magnitude 7.1 earthquake has hit the southern part of that state, waking residents and shaking buildings. usgs reports the quake struck around 1:30 this morning alaska time about 160 miles southwest of anchorage. the national weather service said a tsunami is not expected because of how deep the quake hit. so far there are only reports of power outages in the area. super frustration. the big game is two weeks away

but super bowl 50 gridlock is here. confusing and irritating drivers in san francisco in preparation for super bowl city major streets are closed. southbound lanes of the embarcadero the ferry stewart, market street from beil to stewart, and other areas blocked off. alyssa harrington has more on the gridlock. >> it's the first day of street closers in downtown san francisco while the city prepares for super bowl 50. and alieady -- [horns honking] >> in some spots traffic is a mess. >> we can't get anywhere. people are running across the street super fast like weaving around cars and even at green lights we can't move. >> it took me an hour going around, trying to figure out where i'm going to find a parking place. >> road closers include part of market street near thefer rebuilding which is being transformed into super bowl city. we found frustrated drivers

running red lights and crossing intersections. >> we waited for three green lights to turn finally. >> this shows traffic earlier in the day. another large event, the walk for life, brought out thousands who marched at justin herman plaza. >> this owner is unsure if delivery trucks will be be ail to make it to his place the next two years. >> it will be a challenge because to come here you have to cross market street so without crossing market it's very hard. the a way maybe an extra 15, 20 minutes to get to you. >> meanwhile traffic control officers help drivers navigate their way to the bay bridge but some are already fed up and vow to stay out of the city until the super bowl is over. >> i'm not coming here. i'm staying home. >> the closers will be in place for the next three weeks. a lot of drivers couldn't figure out how to get to the bay bridge. if you are heading southbound on

a massive blizzard has blanketed much. the east coast in the heaviest storm seen in years. this is a live picture of washington, d.c. you see the snow blowers at work. the storm shut down that area, baltimore and new york city, which has been hit by the second heaviest snowfall in history. central park has seen 26.8 inches of snow, just missing the record setting 26.9 inches set in february, 2006. at least 18 deaths are blamed on the weather resulting from car crashes, shoveling snow and hypothermia. many people have been stuck for hours. >> didn't expect to be caught in the middle of snow dilla. >> it's just nonstop, and it doesn't seem like we are getting anywhere, hob honest. >> in new york city a travel ban was lifted about an hour ago. >> a common fight in washington,

d.c. drivers helping other drivers who were stuck. pushing, digging and helping to tow the cars. snowplows kept working at reagan national airport. normal flight operations mr. and dulles international are expected to remain closed through tomorrow. we will have a live report from washington, d.c. in about 30 minutes. because of the blizzard on the east coast more than 12,000 flights have been cancelled. 12,000, including more than 3,000 today. abc7 news was at sfo where 41 departures and 34' rifles to and from the area were stubbed yesterday. just one flight out of the east coast flight cancelled. they are hoping to get other flights back up and running this afternoon. and officials in pacifica are keeping a close eye on homes

on a hillside. massive waves are pounding against the shore, further undermining a cliff that's been eroding for years now. sergio quintana has the story. >> police were posted along the waterfront to keep people away from the high surf and damaged walkway and construction crews continued their efforts to shore up some along the water. >> she remembers el nino 1997-'98. >> it was bad but not this bad. >> you can see several yards of the cliff near this avenue in pacifica fall away. further exposing a line of apartments to the ocean below. >> i don't they even we knew how bad it was until yesterday or the day before when it actually started happening to houses on the edge of the cliff. >> two apartment buildings along

the avenue had been condemned over the years but officials are now watching a third just to make sure revenues of safe. pacifica city manager has taken the unusual step of declaring a state of emergency. >> it's a series of issues, none of which is catastrophic, but you take them together they are outpacing what the still can do to respond. >> you can see what these talking about. a sink hole opened up and swallowed a chunk of the walkway, and one home just a few blocks away has exposed pipe and a portion of the property is dangling over the hillside which has been washed away. the city manager is hoping the state of emergency triggers state or federal help. in pacifica, abc7 news. >> more of that today. the rain starting to end? >> yeah, we will see a little break. showers in the mountain and maybe the north bay will see a sprinkle, but right now we are looking at fog in the north bay.

emeryville camera. partly cloudy today and pretty dry for most of the bay area. lisa argen along shortly with the full accuweather forecast. new this morning, fairfield what police are look at a possible shooting last night at the solano town hall. a man wearing a mask went into the maul targeting a specific group of people but it's unclear if any shots were actually fired because they have not found bullet casing, damage or other evidence. police detained three people who may have been involved and they are now asking anyone with information to contact thome. lawyers for raymond chow are making anotherrest to get him out of his legal troubles. they want the trial judge off the case, accusing him of a conflict of interest. friday's court filing also calls for setting aside this month's jury verdict that found chow

guilty on all 162 counsel against them. the charges include murder, conspiracy to commit murder and racketeering. khow is scheduled to be sentenced in march. a man from las alto is accused of murder and police are still looking for the body of the man he's accused of killing. co-workers reported kyle myrick from gt sports, a motorcycle dealership in the cam bring an park area in san jose. yesterday police arrested steve hill hlebo for myrick's murder. they found a crime scene nearby. they believe he transfor thed myrick's body in his pickup truck. the lights are back on this morning on the bay bridge. the chp confirms there was a partial power outage on the western span that knocked out lights eilluminating the towers and the bridge deck starting

around 35:30 last evening. the power came on around 5:35. no word on what might have caused the outage. a big milestone is being celebrated in fremont this weekend. yesterday the city commemorated their 60th anniversary with a time capsule installation ceremony at capital and state street. that capsule includes items reflecting fremont's culture, diversity and life. it's going to be reopened in january, 2056 at the city's 100th anniversary. dozens of volunteers on the peninsula made their neighborhood more green. abc7 news was on main street in redwood city where 49 trees were planted yesterday. it's one. self bay area urban forestry events taking part in the super bowl 50 environmental program. >> we appreciate a great turnout. we have 55 people volunteer. it's kind of a community effort. we are a very small group of 10

to run the organization and we go out into the community and get volunteers to help plant. >> verizon and the super bowl committee helped sponsor the event. there will be new box books, classroom supplies and technology after a big fundraiser last night. it was the first gala to support the chinese-american immersion programs. children as young as kindergarten learned mandrin as part of their education. it included a chinese nine course dinner and raffle drawings. fremont's mayor is a big supporter. his own son is in the program. >> his study skills have improved and language skills. i know from personal experience when i learned a foreign language it helped me in other grades as well. >> abc7 news reporter david louie mc'd last night's event.

sprinkle to sonoma later today. otherwise we are looking at high pressure building in in the days ahead and here's activity from the mountains. some showers, those will continue in the morning hours and in the mountains we're look at temperatures ranging from 209's to the 30s with a few flakes of snow here to. overall travel conditions much improved. the next system will move it tonight bring in an inch or two. this is sfo where right now no problems. temperatures are certainly feeling much cooler with partly cloudy skies. 54 half moon bay. 50 san francisco. and north of the golden gate bridge we have some 30s and numbers will continue to drop for the next couple of hours. the sun comes up at about 7:23. 44 by the delta, con to cord, livermore and fog in the valleys forming in the next few hours. keep that in mind. you see some of the cloud cover but we will get into some sunned to. we call it partly cloudy.

and a few more clouds in the north bay later on today. perhaps a sprinkle there. otherwise throughout the week ahead high pressure builds in tonight through tomorrow, bringing more sun, milder conditions right on through about wednesday. then we will see things given to change with rain returning by the end of the week. so looking wet into friday and the weekend. so the next few hours you will notice we have the clouds and perhaps a couple sprinkles here. but throughout the day with the cloud cover some breaks in between. we will look for a partly cloudy sky. it should feel pretty nice out there. the next couple of days featuring dry weather. really no chance of rain right through thursday, then you will see friday just a chance and a better chance into next weekend. so there's that incoming system. we will see mostly cloudy skies, about 40 in the sierra nevada. 45 in the southern sierra. more sunshine with 60s from southern california to palm springs. the snowpack doing just the fine here, statewide percentage of

due to an administrative oversight during management changes the registered mail inquiry was not processed. once district leadership was advised of the situation, they took action to accept the claim and make the customer whole. the postal worker came by and delivered her two checks totaling $500. >> i'm just thrilled. it's a lot of money. >> the postal service tells us that the $3,500 gift card remains lost. so it's not clear exactly what happened to it. now if you mail a gift card, remember it's like putting cash in the mail. anybody can use it. i'm michael finney, "7 on your side." >> caught on video a group escaped a rock side in argentina at the ande's mountain stream. a deluge of rocks and water quickly appeared. they had less than a minute to get out of the year.

the mild spot, half moon bay. and a relatively quiet day with numbers ranging from the 50s early on. we will see more cloud cover in the north bay later on. near 60 today and even milder and sunnier in the days ahead. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. this morning that massive blizzard blanketing much of the east coast is moving out. but the deadedly storm has left behind a record amount of snow. dangerous conditions and power outages. abc news reporter kenneth molton is live in washington, d.c. with the latest. you are bundled up. good morning, kenneth. >> i sure appear, carolyn. let's start with the good news. the sun is out in washington. the snow has stopped falling. and i can also tell you the winds are dying down. yes, the storm is over. but the dig-out is just beginning. >> this morning blizzard 2016 proved to be one for the record book. >> oh, yeah, it's no fun. >> no fun at all?

>> no. it's not a winter wonderland. >> the strong storm and winds crawled up the east coast, dumping more than two feet of snow in some parts. crippling some major cities such as d.c. and baltimore and philadelphia. a travel ban was in effect to clear the roads. >> unless it's truly an energy you should not be on the road. >> but the worst of the storm damage is happening receipt now on the jersey shore. >> the winds are horrible. it's cutting you up, the sand and the rain. >> more than three years after super storm sandy devastated communities, there's major coastal flooding. chunks of ice floating in the street. homes under water in atlantic city, cars submerged. and just like sandy, the storm was also deadly. many of the deaths on icy roadways. an 86 stretch of the turnpike was closed. hundreds of vehicles stranded, including a bus carrying the

duke university basketball team. now crews are work to go dig out roads, airports up and down the east coast and cities buried by historic snowfall. >> the exact snowfall totals are still coming in, but we are expected to be record-breaking. right now cities like d.c. are trying to figure out if they will be up and running for the work week, carolyn. reporting live in washington. abc7 news. >> yep. digging out. thank you so much. we appreciate that. well, the storm wasn't big enough to stop a long island couple from having their wedding. bride to be had to take the subway after the travel ban meant her limo could no longer take her to the church. they invited 200 team from the wedding. 100 people made it from as far away as virginia. the bride's father said he wasn't sure she was going to pull this off but he thought since she was born in a snowstorm, she could make it happen. now to your voice, your vote.

republican presidential frontrunner donald trump grabbing headlines this morning about this comment. >> where i could stand in the middle of 5th avenue and shoot somebody, and i wouldn't lose any voters, okay? it's like incredible. >> the comments cameoed at a rally in the sioux city register. the same day the rival was supported for their party's nomination. >> i think i'll be a better president because of your generosity in being part of this process and talking with me. >> at her campaign event yesterday in iowa, clinton said the endorsement means a lot to her. the paper said the former secretary of state has demonstrated that she's a thoughtful, hardworking public servant, who has earned the respect of leaders at home and abroad. a former mayor of new york city said he is seriously considering

repelled off of the roof. >> well, officials say they escaped from the jail by, as you heard, cutting through tunnels and repelling from a roof. the inmates were last seen early friday morning. the first segment of california's high-speed rail could open in the bay area. state officials are considering a decision to build the first operating segment from burbank to the central valley. but according to the l.a. times, the rail authority is studying an alternative to build into the bay area. running trains from silicon valley to bakersfield. they say it would be less expensive than the burr bank central valley proposal because it would not include tunneling costs. >> still ahead on the abc7 sunday morning news, better than black friday. why now is the best time to buy a new tv and whether 4k technology is worth the price. and here is a live look from our roof cam. a quiet day weather-wise with

going to have the next couple of days is going to feel pretty good because not only will with he see more sunshine, have a chance to dry out, but temperatures will be milder. so as we look at live doppler 7hd, you will notice that there's an incoming system to the north that will give a quick burst of snow to the sierra nevada overnight into tomorrow and still a few flakes of snow there now. we have leftover showers and we are looking for it to continue to dissipate. fog has been a problem. so far not a big deal at sfo, but temperatures are ranging from the 50s downtown to the cool 40s. so big changes for you if you head out this morning. much chillier. we've had an area of clear skies for some time before some of the fog develops into the north bay. numbers dropping into the 40s. and speaking of the north bay, the golden gate bridge, nothing going on. but some cool temperatures and fog at 37 degrees in napa, 44 concord, and livermore. and some of that valley fog will continue throughout the next couple of mornings.

so we will call it partly cloudy throughout the afternoon today. more sun, milder in the next couple of days. rain returns. looks like by about friday into next weekend. and there should be a couple of systems after that. so this morning we have some fog, and also a few showers here verifying from this forecast model. then as we go through the 11:00, 12:00 hour, some sunshine. we will see a few more clouds around the north bay and by the afternoon temperatures should be pretty comfortable in the 50s to near 60. but rain chances, not really for the next several days as high pressure begins to build in. so with the higher pressure pushing down on the atmosphere and some of that moisture, we will have some foggy mornings in some spots. in the northern sierra, about 40. you could see some of the snow tonight. 45 in yosemite. southern california still a concern tore that large westerly swell. still very dangerous conditions here with mid-60s in los angeles. the snowpack is very good all throughout the state.

the north he were sierra 124%. you can see pretty good even down to the southern sierra. so looking at 113% of normal compared to 30% a year ago. so we will be looking at more snow in the next week, but as for today, things will be quiet. we will look for partly cloudy skies. temperatures ranging from the mid-50s at the coast. maybe an isolated sprinkle late in the day in the north bay. otherwise about 60 in oakland. 58 in san jose. 57 in morgan hill the and the accuweather seven-day forecast looking at temperatures today pretty mild but look what happens as we get more sun throughout the afternoon. the next couple of days. we will see low to mid-60s for monday and tuesday. wednesday and thursday mid-and upper 60s. and then by next weekend look like rain. so very typical to have a little bit of a break during the winter with some dry weather and looks like we're not shutting anything off. sometimes when we have the dry spells it's like, oh, it's normal, no more rain, but it's
