>> good morning, everyone. i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, january 24th. let's start with a quick look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn. good morning. live doppler hd shows another front that will graze the bay area. it will perhaps give us some more cloud cover but overall a few leftover showers dotting the landscape, particularly near the coast. the headline this morning are the cooler numbers. anywhere from 4 to 15 degrees cooler than yesterday at this time. look at the 30s from santa rosa to napa with fog here. 40 in san ramon. it's 47 fremont and san jose with a mild 54 on the coast.

we do expect a little bit more fog throughout the morning hours, but we have high pressure building in later on today. in between now and then some cloud cover. temperatures climbing to near 60 in the east bay today. we whether look for more mild weather before our next round of rain comes back before the week is out. carolyn. >> thank you, lisa. breaking news out of alaska this morning. a magnitude 7.1 earthquake has hit the southern part of that state, waking residents and shaking buildings. the usgs reports the quake struck around 1:30 this morning alaska time about 160 miles southwest of anchorage. the national weather service said a tsunami is not expected because of how deep the quake hit. abouted thousand people are without power. no injuries or property damage have been reported. super frustration. the big game is two weeks away but super bowl 50 gridlock is here.

confusing and irritating drivers in san francisco in preparation for super bowl city major streets are closed. southbound lanes of the embarcadero near the ferry building, stewart, market street from beil to stewart, and other areas blocked off. alyssa harrington has more on the gridlock. >> it's the first day of street closers in downtown san francisco while the city prepares for super bowl 50. and already -- [horns honking] >> in some spots traffic is a mess. >> we can't get anywhere. people are running across the street super fast like weaving around cars and even at green lights we can't move. >> oh, my gosh. it took me an hour going around, trying to figure out where i'm going to find a parking place. >> road closers include part of market street near the ferry building, which is being transformed into super bowl city. we found frustrated drivers

blocking cross walks and intersections and some running red lights. >> we waited for three green lights to turn finally. >> this shows traffic earlier in the day. another large event, the walk for life, brought out thousands who marched at justin herman plaza. >> this burger restaurant is stocking up on restaurant supplies. they are unsure if delivery trucks will be be ail to make it to his place the next two weeks. >> it will be a challenge because to come here you have to cross market street so without crossing market it's very hard. the other way you maybe drive an extra 15, 20 minutes to get to you. >> meanwhile traffic control officers help drivers navigate their way to the bay bridge, but some are already fed up and vow to stay out of the city until the super bowl is over. >> i'm not coming here. i'm staying home. >> the closers will be in place for the next three weeks. a lot of drivers couldn't figure out how to get to the bay

bridge. if you are heading southbound on embarcadero, you are detour on to battery and cross market street where i am, continue on to first, which takes to you 280. abc7 news. >> this is a time-lapse of last night's traffic from the roof camera. you can bet the confusion and frustration will only build in the next few weeks as more and more people get into town. one million expected, and they all have to try to get around. just in time for the is super bowl closers, the muni night service subway is running again. it has been closing every night at 6:30 the past few months for the installation of a new communication system. they will run from 5:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. the next day. you can get the latest on super bowl events and traffic detours with the abc7 news app. it is free to download. just enable push alerts to get instant notifications.

a massive blizzard has blanketed much of the east coast in the heaviest storm seen in years. this is a live picture of washington, d.c. you see the white house there. the storm has shut down all that area around there. baltimore, new york city, they have also been hit by the second-heaviest snowfall in history. central park has seen 26.8 inches of snow, just missing the record-setting 26.9 inches set in february, 2006. at least 17 deaths are blamed on the weather resulting from car crashes, shoveling snow and hypothermia. more than 80,000 people are without power. many people have been stuck for hours. >> didn't expect to be caught in the middle of snowzilla. >> ettle been one after another truck stuck.

nonstop. and it doesn't seem like we are getting anywhere, honest. >> in new york city a travel ban was lifted about 4:00 our time. this was a common sight in washington, d.c. drivers helping other drivers who were stuck. pushing, digging and helping to tow the cars. snowplows kept working at reagan international airport. normal flight operations mr. and dulles international are expected to remain closed through tomorrow. we will have a live report from washington, d.c. in about 30 minutes. because of the blizzard on the east coast more than 12,000 flights have been cancelled. that includes more than 3,000 flights today. abc7 news was at sfo where 41 departures and 34 arrivals to and from the area were scrubbed yesterday. just one flight in and out of oakland's airport was cancelled, and there were no east coast

flights scheduled at minetta-san jose. the airlines are hoping to get some flights up and running this afternoon. and officials in pacifica are keeping a close eye on homes on a hillside. it's along esplana drive. massive waves are pounding against the shore, further undermining a cliff that's been eroding for years now. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana has the story. >> police were posted along the waterfront to keep people away from the high surf and damaged walkway and construction crews continued their efforts to shore up some along the water. >> kim came to see it. she remembers el nino of 1997- 1997-98. >> it was bad but not this bad. >> you can see several yards of the cliff near this avenue in pacifica fall away. further exposing a line of apartments to the ocean below.

>> i don't think even we knew how bad until yesterday or the day before when it actually started happening to people's houses that are now on the edge of the cliff. >> two apartment buildings along the avenue had been condemned over the years but officials are now watching a third just to make sure revenues of safe. pacifica city manager has taken the unusual step of declaring a state of emergency. >> it's a series of issues, none of which is truly catastrophic, but you take them together they are outpacing what the still can do to respond. >> from sky 7hd you can see what these talking about. a sink hole opened up and swallowed a chunk of the walkway, and one home just a few blocks away has exposed pipe and a portion of the property is dangling over the hillside which has been washed away. the city manager is hoping the state of emergency triggers state or federal help. in pacifica, abc7 news. >> well, the weather here is starting to kind of level off,

new this morning, fairfield police are looking into a possible shooting last night at the solano town hall. a man wearing a mask went into the mall targeting a specific group of people, but it's unclear if any shots were actually fired because they have not found bullet casing, damage or other evidence. police detained three people who may have been involved, and they are now asking anyone with information to contact thome. lawyers for raymond "shrimp

boy" chow are making another effort to get him out of his legal troubles. they want the trial judge off the case, accusing him of a conflict of interest. friday's court filing also calls for setting aside this month's jury verdict that found chow guilty on all 162 counsel -- counts against him. the charges include murder, conspiracy to commit murder and racketeering. chow is scheduled to be sentenced in march. a man from las altos is accused of murder and police are still looking for the body of the man he's accused of killing. on friday co-workers reported kyle myrick from gt sports, a motorcycle dealership in san jose yesterday police arrested steve hill hlebo for myrick's murder. they found a crime scene nearby. they believe he transferred myrick's body in his pickup truck.

the lights are back on this morning on the bay bridge. the chp confirms there was a partial power outage on the western span that knocked out lights eilluminating the towers and the bridge deck starting around 5:30 last evening. the power came on around 9:35. no word on what might have caused the outage. >> more than 2 had hundred people in the east bay will have new books, classroom supplies and new technology after a fundraise everybody last night. for the sixth year students as young as kindergarten learned mandrin as part of their education. it included martial arts performances, a chinese 9-course dinner and raffle drawingsings. the fremont mayor is a big supporter. his son is in the program. >> his study skills have improved, his language skills, and from personal experience i know when i learned for a foreign language it helped me in other grade, as well. >> david louie is there mc'g

last night's event. the series of rainstorms we've been having has brought smiles to home openers who took the plunge and installed rainwater collection systems. whether it's a simple barrel or a series of large tanks, they are filling up quickly. here's david louie. >> you might think this house uses a lot of water to top off the pool that loses two inches a week or to cultivate an extensive vegetable gardens, but not so. they only twos two-thirds of their allotment. >> we have tanks here full and these tanks are 90% full. >> they installed a custom designed rain fall systems. each thank those 530 gallons and the pool 1300 gallons either all filled by the rainfall on the roof. once full they can restore the

quafir. >> i don't think ice possible to store too much. you can just empty it out in the garden even though the garden doesn't need it for growth but it will refill the aquafirs. the ground water sinks whether you lose the water from the ground and we can help that. >> he said you can start small and add later. run off helps irrigate summer crops such as tomatoes. collecting rainwater also has benefits. >> preventing water from going off to the bay. preventing street maintenance where the storm water runoffs takes leaves and debri with it, it clogs up some of the drains in the streets. maintenance crews have to go out and take care of it. stops it before it gets there. >> even the hens seem very happy. in san jose, david louie, abc7 news. >> today is the last day in

walnut creek to lace up your skates and glide across the ice skating rink. it's been open for november since holiday season along civic drive. the hours of 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. today for this last day. tickets are $15 a person. happening today you can meet your favorite oakland a's players and coaches at the team's annual fan fest. you can get autographs and take pictures with the players and with the a's four world series trophies. admission is ten dollars per person and runs from 10:00 this morning to 3:00 p.m. at the coliseum. he like stuff like that. >> yeah. and today will be a good day to get outside. even though yesterday we had to dog some showers. we are still looking at maybe a little activity toward the coast but we have breezy winds there, as well. this is the next incoming system that will not make it as far south to the bay area but it will provide cloud cover to the north bay and snow into the sierra nevada.

live doppler hd was picking up on on a few showers near pescadero. some activity near boulder creek and perhaps by sunnyvale a sprinkle. sfo now, temperatures are ranging from the 30s to about 54 degrees. you see half moon bay just changed to 52. san francisco is at 50. 4 degrees cooler than yesterday. 43 in oakland. and the golden gate bridge up to the north, temperatures continue to drop in our protected valleys with fog. 37 napa, 39 santa rosa. we are looking at numbers in the low 50s for the delta, concord and livermore. several chilly nights ahead with high pressure and a calmer atmosphere. this morning eats 9 degrees colder for you in livermore than this time yesterday. look at napa and with all the moisture in the air you have some nothing to contend with. 12 degrees cooler in oakland. with that 17 miles per hour wind gusts half moon bay you are not as chili. still holding in the 50s. a mix of clouds and sun today

but as high pressure builds, more sunshine and warmer temperatures for the next several days. then high pressure will fade away by the end of the week and rain will return by next weekend. so through the next several hours maybe a few showers here and then we will look at holes in the overcast, as well as still some cloud cover. we will call it partly cloudy today. and the chance of rain the next several days is not with us. it's nil. we will look for rain chances to return on friday, and then into next weekend. so we need more. and more is on the way with snow anywhere from one to two inches in reno by tomorrow. 45 in yosemite. the surf advisory continues for southern california. it should be a nice little break. our snowpack is doing joust fine. of course, we will take more. we are looking at about 113% of normal in the central and northern sierra with a year ago just 30%. the best we've seen in at least four years out there. 58 in fremont today.

>> 59 palo alto. on the coast, 57 santa cruz. temperatures will be comfortable but we will look for the cool nights and the mild averages right through the next several days. maybe a sprinkle tomorrow morning in the north bay, otherwise we are fair and sunny. increasing clouds into friday and the next system looks to be headed our way this time just about next weekend. so, of course, we have all the super bowl festivities. looks like we are going to see some rain. >> all right. so all those folks, the hundreds of thousands coming in, bringing an umbrella definitely. >> yeah. >> thank you, lisa. up next on the abc7 sunday morning news, caught on camera. we will show you the terrifying moments for a group of hikers as a rockslide starts right before their eyes.

and looked like somebody ripped it out. >> the envelope had been torn open, taped with postal tape and marked with postal stamps. >> it's obvious it had been tampered with. >> lickly rita sent it by registered mail and insured it for $500. she filed a claim with the post office. >> i said this is what happened and they said we will take care of it. >> however, no one responded to her claim. rita kept calling the postal managers. >> i said i have paperwork, red tape, has to be inspected. >> the whole year went by. still no response. >> not fair, not right. what's the point of having insurance? >> she contacted "7 on your side," and the postal service told us rita never filed a claim. but we pointed out the claim is right there. after that, rita got a call. >> oh, we have good news. >> the postal service tells us due to an administrative oversight during management changes, the registered mail inquiry was not processed.

once district leadership was advised of the situation, they took action to accept the claim and make the customer whole. the postal worker came by and delivered her two checks totaling $500. >> i'm just thrilled. it's a lot of money. >> the postal service tells us that the $500 gift card remains lost. so it's not clear exactly what happened to it. now if you mail a gift card, remember it's like putting cash in the mail. anybody can use it. i'm michael finney, "7 on your side." caught on video, a group escaped a rock side in argentina at the andes mountain stream. a deluge of rocks and water quickly appeared. they had less than a minute to get out of the way. a mound near loaded this video to youtube. one of washington, d.c.'s most popular residents is enjoying the snow. the national zoo treated this

video of their giant panda, chin chin, rolling around the powder yesterday, maybe trying to make some snow angels. the 264-pound panda looks like he's having a lot of fun. the tweet has been retweeted more than 150,000 times. today is the last day the internet cat video festival in san francisco. sites underway. the festival is an offline celebration of online cat videos. this all-new program has everything from six-second videos to short drama and documentaries. more than 100 in all. the festival starts at 2:00 this afternoon at the center for the arts on mission street in san francisco. much more ahead on the abc7 sunday morning news. the dig-out begins in washington d.c. following the historic blizzard that buried much of the east coast in snow. we will have a live report from the nation's capital.

>> welcome back, everyone. we are starting this half-hour with a look at the weather with our meteorologist lisa argen. >> hi, carolyn. good morning, everyone. live doppler 7hd shows a system to the north of us. we are trafficking a few sprinkles around the south bay and the coast. here's a look at highway 280 and 82 from mountain view southward to sunnyvale, and further south right around the coastline here from pescadero and davenport maybe a few showers. and north of morgan hill, highway 101 could see a little bit of sprinkle activity. otherwise we are looking at a cooler start around the bay. 42 in concord. it's 36 in napa. 42 in mountain view with some cloud cover for you and numbers anywhere from about 4 to 17 degrees colder this morning. that's what the radiational cooling will do. a full moon out there. look for temperatures to climb into the 50s today with afternoon sun and clouds. carolyn. >> as you know, the big weather story today is that massive blizzard blanketing much of the

east coast. it is moving out. but the deadly storm has left behind a record amount of snow. dangerous conditions and power outages. abc news reporter kenneth moton is live in washington, d.c. with the latest. goodgood morning, kenneth. >> good morning, carolyn. the good news is the sun is out and the snow has stopped falling in washington. the bad news, it is still very cold. yes, the storm has moved out it is over. but the dig-out is just beginning. >> this morning blizzard 2016 proved to be one for the record book. >> oh, yeah, it's no fun. >> no fun at all? >> no. it's not a winter wonderland. >> overnight the strong storm and winds crawled up the east coast, dumping more than two feet of snow in some parts. crippling some major cities such as d.c. and baltimore and philadelphia. in new york city a travel ban was in effect to clear the roads. >> unless it's truly an energy -- an emergency, you should not be on the road.

>> but the worst of the storm damage is happening receipt now on the jersey shore. >> the winds are horrible. it's cutting you up, the sand and the rain. >> more than three years after super storm sandy devastated communities, there's major coastal flooding. in ocean city, chunks of ice floating in the street. homes under water in atlantic city, cars submerged. and just like sandy, the storm was also deadly. many of the deaths on icy roadways. in pennsylvania, an 86-mile stretch of the turnpike was closed. hundreds of vehicles stranded, including a bus carrying the duke king university basketball team. now crews are work to go dig out roads, airports up and down the east coast and cities buried by historic snowfall. >> the snowfall totals are still coming in but with they are expected to be record-breaking. they are trying to figure out if they can get up and run big the work week tomorrow. reporting live in washington,

abc7 news. >> well, kenneth, i like the guy who said it is not a winter wonderland. >> no, it's not. >> all right. thank you. that storm was not big enough to stop a long island couple from having their wedding. the bride-to-be had to take the subway after the travel ban meant her limo could no longer take her to the church. they invited 200 people to the wedding. 100 people made it from as far away as virginia. the bride's father said he wasn't sure she was going to pull this off, but he thought since she was born in a snowstorm, she could make it happen. now to your voice, your vote. republican presidential frontrunner donald trump grabbing headlines this morning about this comment. it's about the loyalty of his supporters. >> i could stand in the middle of 5th avenue and shoot somebody, and i wouldn't lose any voters, okay? it's like incredible. >> the comments came at a rally

in sioux city, iowa, on the same day the des moines registrar endorsed his rival, senator marco rubio, and hillary clinton for their parties' nominations. >> i think i will be a better president because of your generosity in being part of this process and talking with me. >> at her campaign event yesterday in iowa, clinton said the newspaper's endorsement means a lot to her. the paper said the former secretary of state has demonstrated that she's a thoughtful, hardworking public servant, who has earned the respect of leaders at home and abroad. michael bloomberg, the former mayor of new york city, said he's seriously considering running for president as an independent. a source close to the 73-year-old told cnn, bloomberg says the race is becoming increasingly polarized and neither side fits his views. bloomberg has previously said he would consider entering the race

just hashtag them with #abc7now on facebook, twitter or just about any social media platform. the higher q&a is tuesday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. right here on abc7 news. this morning an intense manhunt continues for three fugitives who escaped from orange county's maximum security jail in santa anna. as you might imagine, those men are considered extremely dangerous. they are charged with crimes ranging from torture to murder. police and search dogs scoured the streets and are focusing in on the jailhouse rooftop. >> the inmates cut through half-inch steal bars to facilitate their escape. the information and evidence also suggests that the inmates cut their way their way through the plumbing tunnels and ultimately gained access to an unsecure area of the roof. from the roof the inmates repelled off of the roof. >> officials say they escaped from the jail by, as you heard, cutting through tunnels and repelling from a roof. the inmates were last seen early friday morning.

the first segment of california's high-speed rail could open in the bay area. state officials are considering or reconsidering a decision to build the first operating segment from burbank into the central valley. but according to the l.a. times, the rail authority is studying an alternative to build into the bay area. running trains from silicon valley to bakersfield. they say it would be less expensive proposal because it would not including tunneling costs. >> still ahead on the abc7 sunday morning news, better than black friday. why now is the best time to buy a new tv and whether 4k technology is worth the price. and here is a live look from our abc7 exploratorium cam at pier 15. a beautiful day on tap today. maybe a few leftover showers and cooler than yesterday.
