live from the kgo tv broadcast center, this is abc 7 news. >> we are expecting it to be slow going soon in downtown san francisco as the evening commute just starts to heat up. sky 7 hd is live over battery street where cars are just starting to fill all the lanes now. it's been bumper to bumper traffic on both city streets as commuters are greeted by super bowl closures for the very first time. good afternoon, i'm dan ashley in for larry >> sky 7 hd shows the massive backup on battery street during the morning commute today. it hasn't got much better so it may be a good idea just to try to avoid it altogether. >> the evening commute will not be easy. abc 7 news reporter is live

along the embarcadero at washington street. another con vested area. hi. >> reporter: hi, this has been backed up like this here, the southbound lanes for the embarcadero for the entire day and as you mentioned this is the reason why. check that out over there. washington street, all the lanes are blocked off southbound. that means all those cars are having to turn into the financial district. it's going to be like this for the next two weeks. in case anyone doesn't know by now, construction of super bowl city along the embarcadero is in full swing. traffic is shut down on market street until main on the embarcadero. nearby streets have been clogged most of the day. how long have you been in this? >> 45 minutes. >> reporter: he's on battery street just trying to get south of market. he left an hour and a half early to make sure he could drive less than a mile for a work assignment. justin jennings is here from oakland. he traveled three blocks in about a half an hour. >> we heard about the backup.

they had a map showing which streets were blocked off. i didn't know it was going be be like this. this is ridiculous. >> reporter: dia works in the financial district and had no idea this was happening today. how did you get to work today? >> i ubered. i usually walk but i get lazy. >> reporter: after seeing the gridlock, she has advice for anyone in the bay area interested in seeing super bowl city. >> take b.a.r.t. in, or swim over. i wouldn't drive. it's too busy. it's already crowded as it is. >> reporter: we checked in with the local fire station about emergency crews getting through the construction. trucks can use special gates and muni lanes to get through with lights and sirens but on the way back to the station, they're going to be stuck in traffic along with everyone else. if you notice the traffic across the street over there on the embarcadero, northbound lanes are still open which is one of the reasons why commuters told me this morning it was deceivingly easy to get into the city, but getting out is going to be another problem and i'm sure we're going to see those

problems now as rush hour begins. reporting live on the embarcadero, abc 7 news. >> thank you. the ferries quickly became a popular alternative to the traffic mess. take a look. this is what we saw this morning at the lurkspur landing. some commuters were left behind as the ferry reached capacity. >> the boat was full. max capacity. they left people on the dock. yeah. and, yeah, nowhere to sit. >> they actually maxed out, turning people away and they have extra buses so instead of taking the ferry, you had to take the bus. >> ferry riders had one more obstacle to get through on their way to work. super bowl city construction at justin herman plaza. riders are are reminded to give themselves extra time to walk to work. and let's take another live look from sky 7 hd. you can see there, traffic trying to move around the

the motor bike shop where both men worked. detectives say they found evidence of a murder. today lebo talked to reporters at the santa clara county jail. >> hardcore killers, like, hardcore killers, right, you know, next door to me, and that's not who i am. >> you're looking at a picture of the victim's mother, tweeted by abc 7 news reporter david louie. hear her reaction coming up at 5:00 on abc 7 news. right now, developing news in pacifica, where a crumbling cliff is causing big problems once again. see it behind me. we just learned that new homes have just been evacuated because of the erosion. el nino-enhanced storms have created new problems for that area and tonight the city will discussi discuss how to fix the damage already done and brace for more. abc 7 news reporter wayne friedman is live in pacifica with the story. wayne? >> reporter: good afternoon, dan, a break in the weather has

not meant a break in the problems for people who live in these apartments. you may be familiar with them. we've seen them before. look on the door right there. restricted use, it says, a yellow tag. they've been evacuated before. evacuated again now. a little more than an hour ago, pacifica police officers banged on doors, placed the yellow tags. those require residents to leave. they're not allowed in except to pull out their belongings. the city building department deemed these dangerous to live in because of high surf eroding the cliffs below. tenants told us the landlord told them these places are safe. the city apparently feels otherwise. hear first from a resident, then police chief. first, the resident. >> this is all city hall so i'm on my way to city hall right now because they don't get to do this. >> the building official determined the danger has reached a point they can no longer live inside them. >> i feel totally safe. i'm not leaving. >> reporter: today, the pacifica

city council will vote to pass a resolution declaring the city a disaster area. actually that's tonight at a meeting at 7:00 p.m. at city hall. the city has seen damage to its pier, seawall collapsed along the coast and south of here, cliffs are crumbling beneath homes. the city evacuated these apartments for the first time in 2010. one of these buildings just down the way remains evacuated. it's been emtty since then. the city was talking about demolishing that building. clearly it has more to deal with than that. live in pacifica, wayne freedman, abc 7 news. >> thank you, wayne. we are getting a brief break from the rain. take a look at this great picture outside from our emeryville cam. temperatures are heating up a little bit. let's take a live look, again, that beautiful shot we're seeing from our emeryville camera. meteorologists drew tuma is here with our accuweather forecast.

storm. we'll let you know when our next chance of rain is in our full accuweather forecast. the santa cruz wharf remains closed today because of a broken water main. crews found the break yesterday morning. the beach was empty earlier today. the city is trying it get water flowing again to homes and businesses. the city says the same big surf that may have caused the break is making it tough to fix. santa clara county sheriff's investigators are looking for help identifying a homicide victim. today they released these images called facial approximations of a young woman whose remains were found off highway 9 near saratoga more than a year ago. they also released this picture of the blouse she was wearing. a size small blue floral print made by ambience apparel. the victim is white between 15 and 24 years of age, a petite build and brown here. if you recognize her, call the santa clara county sheriff's department. still ahead on abc 7 news at 4:00, it is the reason so many streets are shut town in san francisco right now. we're going to show you the

san rafael, south bay, pleasanton and all the bay area, this is abc 7 news. >> this first weekday of the super bowl city closures has proven to be challenging in terms of the traffic, bullet but workers are taking full advantage of the time. they're making a lot of progress building the various exhibits and stages. abc 7 news anchor kristen sze is here with an update. >> super bowl city opens to the public this. beyond this part, so the area in gold here shows where you'll find most intersections. we're having mike problems, right? >> yeah, sorry, kristen, we'll get back to you in just a second. for now, know, that everything is happening at super bowl city.

work continues for the nfl experience at moscone center. fans can get autographs, visit a hall of fame section and test football skills. howard street will be closed in a few days to set up the outdoor stages. let's go back out live now to sky 7 hd. as you can see we're live over the city at washington and the embarcadero. it's been gridlock all day on downtown streets. as the city gets prepared for all of the planned activities for super bowl 50, the big super bowl city they're putting up. today is the first day of multiple street closures for commuters. likely to be slow going for troo drivers heading out of the city from the downtown corridor. this is going to continue, remember, for the next three weeks. >> yeah. turning to the weather, the east coast which is still feeling the ripple effects of this weekend's blizzard. >> that's right. at least 37 deaths are now linked to the storm. many streets remain closed, barely passable. flooding was the big concern in new jersey. >> the aerial video also shows the snow covering much of new york at yankee stadium. downtown and central park. >> abc news reporter elizabeth

herr is live in new york with more on the impact all along the east coast. elizabeth? >> reporter: good afternoon to you. here in new york we are told the work of piling and melting all the snow is now officially under way, but as you can see, some of these mounds of snow they're as tall as i am, almost as tall as i am. i'm 5'5". officials admit the work is far from over. cities shut down by the blizzard from d.c. to philadelphia and new york city are beginning to show signs of life. >> thank god we have a warmer day, we had a little bit of sunshine earlier. that's going to help melting off some of the snow, making it easier to clear. but still, you've got to exercise caution. >> reporter: but officials are pleading for patience with many secondary streets still impassable. >> just really bad. really, really bad. i've never seen it like this before in a long, long time. >> reporter: and with many cars still buried, officials warn the danger isn't over yet. the storm-related death toll,

more than 30, including a 78-year-old woman in new jersey who according to officials was too afraid to drive home in the snow on friday, found dead in her car this morning. this time lapse video from virginia shows just what millions throughout much of the east are up against, digging out and cleaning up from this historic storm that dumped feet of snow. >> we knew that we would have 24 inches of snow in the district and very cold temperatures throughout the week. several days of cleanup ahead of us. >> reporter: airports are also scrambling, clearing out and trying to make up for more than 12,000 flights canceled over the weekend. this as crews along the jersey shore are using heavy equipment, rebuilding the sand wall to protect homes. well here in new york, officials are now getting creative, trying to clear out all this snow, offering to pay new yorkers to shovel. the going rate, $13.50 an hour. that's the situation here in new york. i'm elizabeth herr for abc 7

news. ama, back to you. >> elizabeth, thank you so much. delays back east are having a spill yoover effect at bay ar airports. live look at runways at san francisco international airport. at least ten departing flights have been canceled there. no flights are canceled at oakland or manetta san jose airports. to washington, d.c., baltimore, and friday, are among the east coast destinations hard eest hi by the cancelations. >> a mess in parts of the country but here we're getting nice weather. >> you know what's fascinating, when you get a strong storm on the east coast, it exhausts the atmosphere. the atmosphere has to recharge itself. we're seeing a tranquil weather pattern not only on the west coast but across much of the united states. we have dry weather at least the next three days. live doppler 7 hd, if we have dry weather, that means live doppler 7 hd can take the afternoon and evening off right

now you notice it's not going to find any moisture out there. live look outside, our east bay hills camera showing you've weave be we've been in and out of the cloud cover throughout the day. pockets of sunshine this afternoon. the forecast calls for clouds to come back in, fog going to be developing after midnight, similar to what we had this morning. the trend the next three days, we are dry and mild through thursday. our next stormg doesn't arrive until friday. current temperatures right now, it's pretty comfortable. 60 at half moon bay. 59 oakland. livermore currently sitting at 58 degrees. future weather, as we go hour by hour through the evening, the clouds will fill back in and then we're going to watch that fog develop through the golden gate and around the immediate bay. first thing on your tuesday morning. so that's what you're going to be greeted to for the tuesday morning rush. by midday, the fog departs. we're turning to a good amount of sunshine, kind of similar to what we had this afternoon. we'll see high clouds stream in and the clouds fill back in once again tomorrow evening. so as we take a look at your day

planner for your tuesday, pretty much a carbon copy of the day we had today. a foggy morning on the way early on. lunchtime, that fog departs. partly cloudy by the afternoon. upper 50s to lower 60s. later on tomorrow evening, it's quiet and partly cloudy dropping back into the 50s. rain chances for the tweakweek , tuesday, wednesday, thursday. our next storm arrives friday really in the north bay and everyone gets a chance to see showers lingering into monday. we'll jump future weather into thursday. what i want you to notice as we go into early friday morning, that first wave is really mainly in the north bay and that's going to be the theme even into saturday. those showers are going to be in the northern half of our viewing area. it's not until saturday night and into sunday morning a second wave will move in, and that's going to sink the showers south. that's when everybody has a good chance of seeing wet weather this second half of the weekend and some of those showers will linger into sunday night and into monday. back here tonight, you see lows

today so the area in red is the main portion, right? justin herman plaza. in gold, that's area where you're seeing a lot of traffic because that's closed as well. you'll see some road closure extending to the moscone center where there are lounges, exhibits and activities. roll the video. see some of the activities going on. already lots to see as construction is under way. the stage for all the nfl network coverage is already up and the ferry building will provide a beautiful backdrop. workers are busy right now building the other sections including this right there, a temporary verizon store. the concert stage also getting fine tuned today. remember, there are detours even more pedestrians. i was walking through it. right now you can get through justin herman plaza, right, but soon even this area will be blocked off. that means pedestrians will have to head north or south on the embarcadero. no doubt you'll be frustrated if you get stuck in the traffic, but you know what, the super bowl closures were not all about inconvenience. they do offer some opportunities as well. i'll have that part of the story coming up on abc 7 news at 6:00.

history in australia. a team of four women arrived in cannes yesterday becoming the first all-female rowing crew to cross the south pacific ocean. this is video from their facebook page. the british team left san francisco last april. they expected the 8,500 mile trip to take 6 months but wild weather slowed them down. they spent the last nine months sleeping two hours at a time, if you can imagine. in addition to a place in history, the crew also raced more than $40,000 for two charities. >> wow. well, check this out. an energetic alabama bloodhound showed a group of marathon runners who's boss over the weekend. one wandered into a crowd of people competing at a half marathon. the dog ran the entire 13 miles putting in an unusual time of 1 hour, 32 minutes and 56 seconds.

we're monitoring traffic conditions all afternoon long and we will keep you posted. abc 7 news reporter melendez. what else lyanne found on abc 7 news at 5:00. stay tuned for that. evacuations have been ordered for an apartment building in pacifica. the building is in danger of falling into the ocean. el nino waves eroded the cliff it sits on. the suspect of presumed murder victim kyle myrick tells abc 7 in a jailhouse interview he didn't kill anyone. david louie tweeted this of steve lebo. meantime, in southern california, officials searching for three escaped jail inmates believe they are armed and dangerous. two of the escapees are believed to be vietnamese gang members. abc news reporter brandi hitt has the latest.

>> reporter: the all-out manhunt for the three escaped inmates is expanding in southern california with the fbi and u.s. marshals office joining the search. >> each of these inmates are extremely dangerous and should be presumed to be armed. >> reporter: investigators believe friday's breakout from this orange county maximum security jail happened just after a.m. inmate body count, the men cutting through this metal grate in a holding cell. >> went through the plumbing tunnels and made their way to the roof. >> reporter: used bed sheets creating a rope like this going down. the shadow is one of the men on the roof. >> the immediate thing that jumped out to me was they had help and probably inside help. >> reporter: the next body count wasn't until after 8:00 p.m. giving them a 16-hour head start. jose nayeri, bac tien duong, and

jonathan tieu. >> i want my son back. >> reporter: his mother begging him to come home. the authorities plead for the public's help in vietnamese. they say two of the escapees with ties to vietnamese gangs may be hiding in the community. there were two other escapes from the same jail 27 years ago. one also from the rooftop. detectives say they don't believe anyone within the sheriff's department was involved but they are investigating. brandi hitt, abc news, los angeles. to a brazen prison break in brazil. 40 inmates escaped after their made a bomb and blew a hole in an exterior wall. took police only a few hours to round all but two of them up. one was killed. another is still on the loose. it was the second mass prison break in brazil in the last week. 53 men escaped from another jail last wednesday. only 13 of those escapees have since been found. isis released a troubling, disturbing new video that shows the terrorists behind the paris attacks. the 18-minute video shows faces

and names of the nine people isis claims carried out the massacre. it also includes an audio message from the suspected ringleader of the attacks and shows images of british prime minister david cameron. intelligence officers believe the united kingdom could be the group's next target. meanwhile, the terror group has created a whole new industry based on making fake passports. abc news reports isis has likely been able to print legitimate looking syrian passports. officials believe the forge t thethed documents have been used by people entering the united states. traffic measures are being taken throughout south america against the mosquito born zika virus. the virus is hitting the area hard. the outbreak may cause women to give birth to children with abnormal brain sizes. today the world health organization warned the zika virus is expected to spread to the united states. well, the state of michigan

is stepping up its investigation into the water crisis in flint. the attorney general there has appointed two special investigators to determine whether any state laws were violated in the delivery of contaminated water to flint. extremely high levels of lead have been found in the city's water supply. meantime, a bottled water company owned in part by sean diddy combs and mark wahlberg are pledging to donate 1 million bottles to flint. the sprint to the iowa caucuses is on, a week away from the first sprovotes in the race the white house. the candidates focused on the hawkeye state. we have more from washington, d.c. >> reporter: the battle for iowa. >> they want to be part of a political revolution. >> reporter: caucuses in the hawkeye state in a week, new hampshire is next in two weeks. the candidates including gop front-runner donald trump are logging a lot of miles between both states. >> it's crunchtime, folks. i mean, i want to win iowa. >> reporter: in iowa, recent

statistics with our snow pack in the sierra. this is the healthiest it has been for this date in five years. at 117% above -- or of normal, i should say. one year ago, it was at 27%. and that's what it looked like from satellite one year ago. the sierra snow pack was just very minimal. fast forward to today, rather healthy. a lot of snow in the sierra. great for skiers and snowboarders and resorts. trying to go to tahoe the next three days, we're good but by friday a storm moves in. it's rain. snow levels are high but they'll drop through the weekend. overnight tonight, in the 40s with fog developing after midnight tonight. then tomorrow, early morning fog giving way to pockets of sunshine. a similar sky like we had today with most spots into the 60s. really comfortable start to the workwe workweek. >> thank you so much, drew. still ahead on abc 7 news at 4, staying safe for new year lunar celebrations. the message from city police and officials. plus, protecting her

daley city, dublin, los gatos and all the bay area, this is abc 7 news. >> law enforcement officers and san francisco city officials kicked off another safety awareness campaign for chinese new year today. the year of the monkey is almost here. the lunar new year celebration draws visitors from throughout the bay area and beyond. last year as many as 3 million people watched the new year parade which caps the festivities. abc 7 news was on san francisco's clement street today as details of the safety campaign were shared with the community. >> believe that by working together we can keep our community safe during this special time and throughout the year to come. >> organizers say pickpockets are high on the list of criminals to look out for. they also single out extortion as a problem for small businesses during the holiday period. they say anyone who sees or hears anything suspicious should call police. now to a brave mother caught on video fighting off carjackers who are threatening her

children. they were inside the car and she is now speaking out in an abc news exclusive. >> reporter: a trip to the gas station turning into a heroic moment for a florida mother. watch as angie fights off two armed men as they allegedly try to steal her car while her children sit inside. >> i was yelling at my kids in the car, don't get in the car. he got in, anyway. >> reporter: she was traveling to miami with her 1-year-old daughter and 7-year-old son when she stopped to get gas. while at the pump, police say these two men, juan carlos gonzalez and nicholas rozado tried to carjack her. >> i was just thinking that he's going to take it and the kids are in there. >> reporter: that's when she sprang into action. a security camera at the gas station capturing it all. the protective mother sprinting around to the driver's side door, diving into the car after one of the men pulling him out of the vehicle and stripping off his mask. the two would-be carjackers are then seen running off camera

allegedly fleeing the scene in a getaway car. >> i didn't even think about the guns. i didn't think about what they were going to do to me, what they could have done to me. i just thought about getting the kids out. >> reporter: her son, evan, watching the whole thing from the back seat. >> my mama yelling at him, saying get out of the car, get out of the car, get out of the car right now. >> reporter: the suspects spotted by police less than a mile from the gas station. authorities arresting the two men and their alleged jgetaway driver. the trio now behind bars facing charges for attempted armed carjacking and eluding police. >> is that mom incredible or what? that's geo bonitez reporting. one of the suspects is a minor. he's no longer held in jail. the other two are locked up still on $25,000 bond. there's a call to action on childhood obesity around the globe. a panel commissioned by the world health organization says 41 million kids under age 5 are now obese or overweight worldwide. that's up from 31 million in

1990. the panel is urging governments, educators, agra business, and food marketers to do more to help fight the problem. it also recommends taxing sugar-sweetened beverages and implementing school policies to foster good diet and physical activity. a new study from the american cancer society shows an increase in colon cancer patients under the age of 50. researchers looked at 260,000 colorectal cancer patients diagnosed between 1998 and 2011 and found nearly 15% were younger than 50. despite the findings, most doctors think the screening age should remain where it is. that's age 50 unless there's a family history. colon cancer is the most common cancer in american men and women. well, new dietary guidelines include eating more seafood. >> and employee wellness programs may no longer be so voluntary. jane king has today's wellness report. >> reporter: workers increasingly are being told by companies to undergo health screenings and enroll in we

"the new york times" reports many employees face stiff financial penalties in the form of higher premiums if they don't have their cholesterol checked or join programs to lose weight or manage health issues. gluten-free diets are a increasingly popular, but a new study on athletic performance suggests giving up gluten may not provide the benefits many hoped for. many athletes believe gluten-free foods will make them robust and less prone to upset stomach. tindr launched a new program in response -- so now tindr, one of the most popular dating apps added a section with birth control information and location services for hiv and std clinics. and the government has issued new eating guidelines and they include a lot of seafood. the fda is, in fact, doubling its seafood recommendation for
