more debates. jonathan karl, abc news, des moines. president obama has marked holocaust remembrance day by honoring four people who risked their lives to protect jews. mr. obama spoke last night at the israeli embassy, the first sitting president to speak there. during his speech, the president said that anti-semitism is on the rise, and an attack on any faith is an attack on all faiths. police in austria are investigating the death of a woman from colorado who has been working as an au pair in vienna. the body of 25-year-old lauren mann was found in her apartment in a pool of blood. police say no weapons were found at the scene but they're reportedly investigating her death as a possible homicide and deepening the mystery, reports say her body was found in total darkness because all the lights in her apartment had burned out. prosecutors allege in newly released court documents that boston marathon bomber tsarnaev showed no remorse. at his sentencing hearing he

said he was sorry for the lives he took. he has been given the death penalty. the militia member killed in a shootout by authority was remembered by a candlelight vigil last night in oregon. lavoy finicum was a spokesman for the group and late word coming from oregon that three more people have been arrested in connection with the armed group. abc's neal karlinksky is there. >> reporter: the traffic stop that ended with eight oregon militants in custody and one shot dead is being seen as a rallying cry. >> i'm disgusted. i'm heartbroken. that was a wonderful man. >> reporter: lavoy finicum was one of the group's most vocal leaders, once armed and easygoing. relatives claim he was murdered in cold blood with his hands in the air. his picture spreading online as a hero in the patriot movement. police will say little about the traffic stop in which occupation leaders can be seen handcuffed on the ground. at some point, one militia member was wounded and finicum was shot and killed. at least one alleged witness saying finicum charged at police.

>> there doesn't have to be bloodshed in our community. >> reporter: rather than ending the occupation, the remaining 40 or so inside the compound have dug in. but with their leader asking them to back down, will they? >> they told us that we could safely leave. well, the group that was leaving has a dead man in it, so it depends on what you believe. >> reporter: the eight arrested face serious federal charges but the bigger question is whether still more force will be used to end this occupation once and for all. neal karlinksky, abc news, burns, oregon. well, missouri police department has agreed to a major overhaul following an officer's fatal shooting of an unarmed black teenager. the plan calls for extensive training, improved procedures for the use of force and recruiting more minority personnel. the department would also be monitored for compliance. if approved, the deal will avert a federal civil rights lawsuit. so, one upside has emerged after walmart's announcement that it's closing more than 100

stores. prices at those stores, well, there are falling prices, cut by 75%. but shomers in some small towns are furious saying the retail giant forced homegrown businesses out and now walmart is leaving as well. here's abc's steve osunsami. >> reporter: in the tiny coastal town of oriental, north carolina, they feel cheated by walmart. >> they don't care about rural america. >> the town depended on us. >> reporter: renee ireland smith took us to what's left of her family's grocery store that was forced to close in october after 45 years, because it couldn't compete with walmart's everyday low prices. she learned just two weeks ago that the walmart here is closing, too. >> we were fine as a town before they got here. but now we're broken. >> reporter: her anger is shared across america. 269 stores are closing for business reasons. more than 100 of them in our nation's smallest communities that now have no nearby grocery stores or pharmacies. in fairfield, alabama, city leaders wonder how they'll pay the bills.

>> reporter: he waits for police to arrive. >> good night. >> reporter: that's when anjali says she started tearfully trying to make amends. >> so i apologized that night to him after we settled and i paid him for the damages. he accepted my apology. i was grateful he didn't press charges. >> a lot of people are saying because he didn't press charges, you're getting away with it. >> i don't believe that i got away with it. >> reporter: but once the video started exploding on the internet, the judge and juries on social media began weighing in, calling her an arrogant, drunk little brat that should be charged with assault and should not be practicing medicine. her employer jackson health system put her on administrative leave pending an investigation. ramkissoon isn't the first person caught behaving badly with uber drivers. when benjamin golden, a taco bell executive, was too drunk to give proper directions, his uber driver asked him to get out. >> sir, get out of my car or i will call the police. >> reporter: that's when golden responded with this.

>> [ bleep ]! >> reporter: the physical assault landed him in jail. his lawyer said it was an isolated incident and he went on a televised apology tour. >> you know, i'm not that person. >> reporter: but he still lost his job. golden is now countersuing the driver for $5 million, saying the driver recorded him illegally. ramkissoon says she's taking the larger lesson to heart. >> will you keep drinking? >> no. >> i mean, right. >> no. after seeing that, the thought of alcohol gives me ptsd at this point. i don't even want to look at it, i don't want to touch it. no. >> reporter: a sobering thought for all of us. juju chang, abc news, new york. >> i love that she's owning up to it. >> yeah. >> and i should point out my good friend britt went through a similar thing last year when she yelled at a tow truck operator and it was caught on camera. >> from espn. >> from espn. we worked together years ago. still close friends. where she got a lot of threats as a result of it, a lot of people calling her a brat. some of it was deserved.

>> reporter: cruz saying trump's decision amounts to skipping out on a job interview with iowa voters. >> if someone didn't show up at the interview, you know what you'd say? you're fired. >> reporter: the texas senator now challenging trump to a debate, one-on-one. trump tweeted his response saying, can we do it in canada? cruz took it a step further. he's already booked a venue in iowa. on the democratic side, new numbers show bernie sanders with a razor-thin lead in the hawkeye state over hillary clinton. and just days before the first votes are cast, sanders points out she's not even there. in one of his most personal attacks yet. >> she is raising money from a philadelphia investment firm. >> reporter: the clinton campaign is responding saying she met with african-american minsters in philadelphia before the fund-raiser. clinton has one more fund-raiser to go in new york city before making her way back to iowa. stephanie ramos, abc news, washington.

in other news this morning, there were at least three more arrests at the oregon wildlife refuge. the scene of a militia standoff. the group's leader, amon bundy, issued a statement, asking the government to allow the people to remain at the refuge to depart without being prosecuted. bundy is asking them to stand down, go home, hug your families. the fight he says is now in the courts. so please go home. jason patrick is one of those still holding out hope. >> they told us that we could safely leave. well, the group that was leaving has a dead man in it. there's another man who left and was in arizona and he's in custody. they've said peace and resolution the whole time. it depends on what you believe. >> bundy along with six others have been arraigned in federal court. judge denied bail calling the group a flight risk and a danger to public safety. more arrests are expected in connection with that high-profile prison escape in southern california. five people have been taken

into custody so far. it's been nearly a week since three men disappeared from a maximum security jail. here's abc's kayna whitworth. >> reporter: abc news the first inside the maximum security prison, learning of arrests in the investigation into the dangerous inmate escape in orange county. the arrests, not of the suspects themselves. and are these people that the justice system is familiar with already? >> yes. >> reporter: here's the roof where authorities say they cut through barbed wire and rappelled down, using that rope made from bed sheets. court documents obtained by abc news shedding new light on the elaborate escape. >> but he obviously was calculating a way to get out of this jail, now that we've seen what has happened. >> reporter: authorities say they sawed through a door to the plumbing system. then fashioned a rope sling so they could pull themselves up into the ventilation tunnels. how it happened without being noticed? still unexplained. hossein nayeri's alleged crimes of attempted murder and torture well documented. jonathan teiu and bac tien duong accused of murder and attempted murder, both with strong gang ties. the sheriff telling me that when

this jail was originally built 50 years ago, it housed mainly lesser criminals. today, 70% of the inmates are accused of felonies. kayna whitworth, abc news, santa ana, california. to overseas now in poland. a somber anniversary marked at one of the most notorious symbols of human suffering in world war ii. dozens of elderly holocaust survivors laid flowers at the wall of death located inside the concentration camp at auschwitz. many wore blue and white stripes. the camp was liberated 71 years ago by the soviet army. and in arlington national cemetery, another day of remembrance this time by nasa. three decades after a disaster, the space agency will honor its fallen astronauts in ceremonies today marking the 30th anniversary of the "challenger" space shuttle tragedy. in addition to the "challenger" seven-member crew, nasa will remember the three astronauts

who died on the launch pad in the "apollo 1" fire in 1967. this morning investigators are baffled over why passengers on board an american airlines flight suddenly felt so sick, the pilot had to make an emergency landing. abc's david kerley reports. >> reporter: with a flight attendant collapsing in the aisle, then other crew members and passengers falling ill, the l.a.-bound american airlines flight returned to london to flashing lights and emergency vehicles. members of the band race the horizon were on board. >> she just literally fainted. she just stumbled literally within touching distance of me. it was crazy. i've never witnessed anything like that. >> reporter: that's when the others started falling ill around the band member. american airlines says two passengers complained, and london officials say four crew members were lightheaded. all were released. london fire crews checked inside the aircraft and all the luggage which was taken off the boeing 777. no hazardous substance was detected by the crews. so it is still a mystery why those people became ill on the flight. david kerley, abc news, washington.

a woman from colorado working as an au pair in austria has been found dead in her apartment in vienna. the 25-year-old identified as lauren mann was found in a pool of blood. they are reportedly investigating her death as a possible homicide. reports say her body was found in total darkness because all the lights in her apartment had burned out. in mexico, meantime, we get new video released by authorities showing drug kingpin joaquin "el chapo" guzman arriving at the maximum security prison after recapture earlier this month it shows him being fingerprinted and processed at the same prison from which he escaped last july and shows guzman after getting his head shaved being informed about the process for his extradition to the united states.

interest rates will stay the same at least for now despite some economic slowdown with economic growth. however the federal reserve is pledging to keep a close eye on turbulence around the world and in the financial marks investors not too thrilled about the fed's decision to keep rates alone. the down 222 points. wendy's is investigating a possible security breach. the fast food chain said it had gotten reports of unusual activity on cards that had recently been used at some of its locations. apparently fraudulent charges were showing up on cards after they had been used at wendy's. the lowly cable box may be due for an upgrade. under a new proposal from the fcc, cable and satellite customers could purchase the device they use to watch programming. right now nearly everyone must lease the box from their provider to the tune of about $230 a year. is that how much we're paying? the proposal comes up for vote next month. just over a week away from super bowl 50 and ticket prices are now topping $5300 each. it comes as new york attorney general's office finds that the average fan these days has no

chance of buying a decent seat to any popular event at face value. less than half the tickets for concerts, sports and other events are reserved for the public, but most are held by insiders. and much of what is released in the end by the brokers who resell, it's done at a significant markup. >> concert tickets are ridiculous nowadays. by the way, speaking of the super bowl, just south of san francisco, nfl crews are busy decking out levi stadium for super bowl 50. >> it's the biggest issue is the stadium's playing field. making sure that el nino storms don't drench the newly grown sod. the ground crew are kolding that grass daily and they promise it will be perfect on game day. and scoreboards are also being tested every day. and the 49ers' logos are long gone, replaced by those of the denver broncos and carolina panthers mostly. the big number 50 seen everywhere on super bowl signs, as well. those are there, as well. >> lots of preparations. >> yeah.

okay. so you're looking at surveillance video from philadelphia showing the moment that a van slammed into two vehicles and a house after both men in the vehicle had been shot. seconds later, video shows the two men who were shot fleeing the scene on foot. both men did survive. one had been shot in the face. police have made an arrest in that shooting but they're looking for other suspects who may have been involved in that scene. baltimore expects to have completely dug out of all of its streets by tomorrow. six days after that historic blizzard and things finally getting back to normal in newark, new jersey. kids back in school yesterday. but the clean-up not over yet. while most roads are passable, giant snow banks blocked many side streets. as the snow melts and more people dig out, we're really uncovering some incredible stories from the big storm. >> including one woman with a

this is "world news now." we do say good morning to you, everybody. i'm kendis gibson. >> always good to start a mornings with mj. >> michael jackson, absolutely. there's controversy. you know, about who they selected for this role. >> kind of interesting, yeah. >> one of the oscar controversies we've been talking about is there are no good roles for black actors. >> oh, kendis. >> and apparently, this is a good role for a black actor. >> it's an interesting story, though. we'll get to that in a bit. but another controversy that is surrounding tonight's gop debate on fox news. >> yeah. donald trump insisting he will not take part in tonight's debate pushing senator ted cruz into center stage, surrounded by the six other republicans. trump spoke out again last night. here's abc's david wright. >> reporter: in iowa, a high stakes game of chicken. donald trump insists he's ducking the last gop debate before the caucuses, for reasons he outlined to bill o'reilly. >> i was not treated well by fox. they came out with this ridiculous pr statement.

it was like drawn up by a child. >> reporter: the donald apparently not swayed by o'reilly's appeals. >> in your christian faith, there is a very significant tenet, and that's of forgiveness. >> you know, it's called an eye for an eye also, you can look at it that way. >> reporter: instead of the debate, trump's camp officially announced they'll be hosting a benefit for veterans. ted cruz threw down the gauntlet, offering to debate trump. groups backing cruz are proposing $1.5 million for vets if he'll accept the challenge. trump tweeted back suggesting they'd do it in canada, cruz's birth place. what it all comes down to is an unprecedented battle between the front running republican republican candidate and the news outlet. >> we love trump, and the front running republican news outlet. >> there's a new campaign to try and take down donald trump.

>> reporter: bottom line, trump doesn't like the moderator. >> i'm not a fan of megyn kelly. i think she's a third-rate reporter. >> reporter: oh, how the times have changed. >> do you really think that you're a better moderator than i am? >> no, i could never beat you. there would be no contest. you have done a great job, by the way, and i mean it. >> reporter: that's from a fox news interview four years ago when donald trump, then the host of the "celebrity apprentice." >> you're fired. >> reporter: was actually scheduled to moderate a republican presidential debate in iowa. but the candidates didn't like that idea. rand paul even put out a statement saying the selection of a reality television personality to host a presidential debate is beneath the office of the presidency and flies in the face of that office's history and dignity. now, megyn kelly told e.t. she's not convinced trump won't blink. >> i'll be surprised if he doesn't come. i mean, i know he says he doesn't want to now, but i'll really be surprised because i feel like the people of iowa are still persuadable. >> reporter: the art of the deal meets the ultimate reality show. i'm david wright in new york. >> on the democratic side, the race is tightening between

bernie sanders and hillary clinton three days before the iowa caucuses. the latest poll puts sanders just four points ahead of clinton in iowa. and now the real question is, which candidate will president obama back on the campaign trail? clinton has been playing the obama card, but off the trail, sanders met privately with the man he's hoping to replace. >> the president and i discussed this morning a number of issues, foreign policy issues, domestic issues, occasionally a little bit of politics. >> the meeting comes just after the president seemed to tilt towards hillary clinton in an interview with politico, but sanders dismissed suggestions that president obama was leaning towards his former secretary of state. what should have been a routine traffic stop along a busy atlanta area highway turned deadly. a georgia state trooper tried stopping a speeding pickup truck but the driver took off triggering a ten-mile chase and a traffic backup. when the truck finally stopped, the driver stepped out and fired a handgun. the troopers fired back. the driver later died in

surgery. one trooper was injured but is expected to recover. the widow of a chicago area police officer who died in a staged suicide has been indicted by a grand jury. melodie gliniewicz faces charges for helping her late husband siphon thousands of dollars from a charity. investigators say they used the money for a trip to hawaii and to dine at restaurants. her lawyer says gliniewicz was a victim of her husband's secret actions. candlelight vigil was held last night in oregon for the militiaman killed in a shootout by authorities. ammon bundy along with six others had been denied bond after an appearance in federal court. he issued a statement urging the remaining members still at the wildlife refuge to go home. at least three more arrests were made overnight. more arrests are expected in connection with that

high-profile prison escape in southern california. five people have been taken into custody so far. it's been nearly a week now since the three men disappeared from a maximum security jail. the jail has revised its head count procedures because it took so long to discover the men were missing. public health investigators now say about 200 children have elevated levels of lead in their blood, a new development from the water crisis in flint, michigan. it comes as investigators say the lead levels in the city's water supplies have been trending better, but it's still too soon to give the go ahead for residents to resume drinking unfiltered water. much of south florida will be cleaning up today after tornados tore through the area. the impact was so intense, authorities are saying it's a miracle that no one died. abc's phillip mena is on the scene. >> reporter: tornado warnings just after 9:00 a.m. >> why don't we get under the bridge, kyle? >> reporter: kyle mcafee and his father in their truck, caught in the middle of it. >> we're in the tornado. >> reporter: nowhere to go. taking refuge under this overpass. winds up to 100 miles an hour, tearing through the college

campus nearby. >> there was, like, a tidal wave of clouds and water. >> reporter: this was the scene when it was over. a car dropped on top of another. this truck flipped on its side. roofs shredded off buildings nearby. trees downed. >> i seen that tree just snap like it was a toothpick. i'm still shaken up, i mean, i didn't even know which way to go. >> reporter: back on that highway, this car lifted right up from the southbound lane, landing northbound. the driver still inside. >> that was the one minor injury that we had. so, we're very fortunate. >> reporter: and you can see what the storm did to this gated community. trees ripped out of the ground, the roof blown off and families here are bracing for more. phillip mena, abc news, coconut creek, florida. okay. so watch out for storm warnings again today from ft. myers to west palm beach with up to 3 inches of rain. dangerous winds and downpours in the pacific northwest. snow around the great lakes, milder in the northeast. >> 70s in los angeles and miami.
