>> good morning, i'm carolyn tyler. thanks for joining us on this sunday, january 31st. let's start with a quick look at the weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> he, carolyn p requesting morning to you. the south bay is on the northern edge of this system that continues to push into central and southern california. so we are look at some light rain in mountain view, san jose and cupertino. it's this area of cold pressure and the cold pool of air that will sweep over the entire bay area today, bringing some very gusty winds. right now we are looking at some returns to the far south.

this will continue a couple of hours. maybe some mist and drizzle in those areas, and you see around mt. hamilton we have the colder air, the darker green indicating the more likely rain around morgan hill, highway 101. you look at the loop along the central coast you see -- oops, i blasted through that quickly. but it will fill in from monterey today. so probably about 9:00 that rain sinks to the south out of the south bay. so plan on some sunshine, a cool day with the winds picking up. carolyn. >> lisa, thank you. >> in developing news, we are expecting to hear at any moment that two dangerous escapees from southern california are back in an orange county jail. the duo taken into custody near golden gate park during a statewide manhunt. melanie woodrow said a sharp-eyed woman aided in the arrest. eight days after three inmates described as extremely dangerous

used a makeshift rope out of linens to repel down a jail, all three are now back in custody. >> i told you we were going to capture these individuals. >> san francisco police captured hossein nayeri and jonathan tieu saturday morning after a citizen recognized the white van they allegedly stole following their escaped. the take-down at stanyan and waller street near golden gate park. >> stop, lay down, hit the ground. get on the ground. he did. larry watched it. >> they captured him and got the other one in the truck. >> they found tieu hiding inside the van. >> when we conducted a search of the van we found 380 rounds inside, an ammunition round. we did not locate a weapon at the time. >> the trio were spotted earlier in the week. a man said they stayed here and

checking out one day morning. one day later one surrendered to police. the moment captured on video. it's unclear why nayeri or tieu were in san francisco. or where they may have been headed next. >> and how smart they were to stay out-of-sight but there came a time when they could onlya5 out so long. the orange county sheriff said the next up date will be on monday. in san francisco, melanie woodrow, abc7 news. >> so to recap, it started nine days ago when the fugitives escaped from a jail in orange county by repelling down the side. last sunday investigators said one of the suspects stole a man, -- a van, which two of them used to drive here to the bay area. tuesday they checked into the almeda motel in san jose. friday police arrested one who turned himself in, and it all wrapped up yesterday morning with the final two arrests in san francisco.

for updates on any major story anytime, just download our abc7 news app and enable push alerts for immediate notifications. super bowl city in san francisco opened yesterday to plenty of fanfare. we had many of our cameras pointed at last night's beautiful fireworks show. now that live look from the visa everywhere cam over super bowl city. it's quiet right now, but there will be huge crowds later on. abc7 news reporter sergio quintana took in the sights and sounds. >> the first night of super bowl city festivities started off with a bang. that show in the sky was the opening act for a show on stage by bay area chris issak. the first headliner of the week-long party leading up to super bowl 50 next weekend. ♪

>> there were some fans who were disappointed at a lack of access to the main stage of the show. for safety reasons the fire marshal shut down entry to a large area right in front of the stage, leaving it pretty sparsely populated. most people had to watch on big screens nearby. down along the embarcadero some of northern california's brightest political stars gathered for a show of their own. three, two, one! [cheers and applause] >> they relit the light project on the bay bridge. the foundation that launched the piece of art donated it to the state of california. >> on behalf of a grateful state, we are honored to be here. thank you all very much. >> the strings of light will now be a permanent part of the bay bridge. for super bowl fans, this is the first opportunity to take in this massive spectacle. >> this is what i had planned, to check it out, hang out and get excited. >> all the fans said they were excited to see super bowl city

but would be more excited if they had tickets to the super bowl. abc7 news. >> the super bowl teams are coming into town today. peyton manning and the denver broncos are scheduled to get here first, landing approximately 2:30 at the san jose international. then about an hour later the cam newton and the carolina panthers roll in. the panthers are the choice to win super bowl 50. vegas has them as a 6-point favorite and the margin could grow larger as game day gets closer. and more super bowl closers to tell you about. this is a live look from the city of santa clara webcam. it shows tasmin drive at great america outside levi's stadium. later today tasman will close down until tuesday,

february 9th. lightrail service will continue until the evening commute on friday. bart has ambassadors letting riders know the spear street exit from the embarcadero station is closed. that's the exit that puts you right at market and spear. the spear street exit will be open during the morning commute on weekdays. the weekend closer runs through next sunday.ñi muni also has extra ambassadors on hand directing riders. yesterday muni put up some new signs to help visitors find their way to the super bowl events in san francisco. riders going to the nfl experience should get off at the powell street station. those going to super bowl city, at the embarcadero. if you want get up-close and personal with the vince lombardi nfl trophy, the week long event kicked off at the moscone center. you see san francisco 49 running back roger craig carrying in the super bowl's top prize. craig says he hopes niners and

raiders fans appreciate the week-long celebration. >> this is fun. it's a fun time. and it's great for all the people in the bay area. hope they embrace it well.3w >> the nfl experience has a lot more that's hands on. you can try your leg in a game-winning field goal attempt. you can attempt a punt and try out the quarterback challenge. tickets are $35 for adults, $25 for kids. today's events at super bowl city include performances by the marcus shelby trio and oakland interfaith gospel. in the south the bay, the fan energy zone at san jose's s. a. p. center runs through super bowl sunday. it features interactive motion capture games. and a super community concert and fireworks show is set for today at mission college in santa clara. it includes a concert by heart, and a food alley. that event starts at 3:00 this afternoon.

as crowds descended on super bowl city yesterday, san francisco police were busy trying to keep a group of protesters from entering. abc7 news reporter janet o has the story. [chanting] >> reporter: about 200 protesters swept the streets, determined to take their message to super bowl city. >> we are protesting because we are representing black and brown lives because our lives matter. >> protesters say they won't rest the until changes are made, starting with the firing of san francisco's top cop. this all started when a young black man was killed in a heated confrontation with officers last month. >> nobody goes through. >> police quickly attempt

spelled into a line stopping protesters in their track the after what seemed like a long standstill, they were casually escorted to super bowl city. they took pictures, enjoyed the festivities, but still held on to their signs. at one point the group made their way on the stage but quickly got off. it was by all accounts a peaceful event that didn't seem to bother nearby super bowl fans. >> we aren't here to tear things up or confront the super bowl or the people here but we are hear to say this has to stop. >> and they did it at a place where they could be heard and seen. abc7 news. >> well, protesting is san francisco's heritage. lisa argen here now talking about super weather for super bowl festivities. >> yeah, looks pretty good. right now a little bit of rain out there from livermore, parts of san francisco, down the peninsula, fremont and the south bay. this will continue to shift south out of the area before most of you are out enjoying the day. we will have sun and we will talk all about the forecast and the super bowl next. >> also next, going for it all. the super opportunity for homeowners to rent their houses for big bucks to visiting fans.

>> in denver a large motorcycle show scheduled for today was

cancelled after one person was killed in a shooting. 10,000 people were inside the national western complex when members of two motorcycle clubs got into a fight. police say there were shootings and stabbings. they believe there was more than one gunmen. seven people went to the hospital and that's where one died. police have not made any arrests, but are talking to a person of interest. this morning santa clara police are warning this teenager is armed and dangerous and a suspected killer. 18-year-old jonah castro is believed to have shot and killed a man in his car friday afternoon. castro is described at 5'3", 115 pounds with brown eyes and black hair. if you see him, you are urged to call 911. police are searching for a man and woman accused of stealing two cars, including a police cruiser. the woman on the left and christian hernandez ran the

stolen s.u.v. into a patrol car the officers were trying toa rest them for a series of burglary and car thefts. they got away after stealing a police car and dragging a police officer behind it for several feet. that officer is going to be okay. police recovered the cruiser about five miles away in san jose. the fbi has warned law enforcement to keep an eye out for someone trying to sneak into super bowl 50 using a stolen agent's id. agent's car early friday morning in venecia. they also took three handguns. there's a $5,000 reward for information lead to be an arrest. fans coming to the bay area for the super bowl are finding some super prices when they look for a place to stay. abc7 news anchor reggie looks at what people are willing to pay to see their team play. >> try to book a hotel room in the bay area for the super bowl,

and you might be shocked at the price. that is if you can even find a place to stay. >> i would venture to say that the week leading up to super bowl the hotels in san francisco will be running 95 to 100% full >> thomas kline is the general manager of the fairmont hotel on knob hill. he said rooms across the bay area are expensive. many hotels are charging as much as six times their normal rate. >> we are starting off at $1,500 for the regular rooms. suites go and there's a four day minimum. >> the price reflects the demand. >> this is certainly not the norm and nobody i have spoken to say we going to go out of the market and price gouge. >> many visitors are looking at a house to rent. there are more than 6,000 listings available across the area with the super bowl

weekend. with the number of searches up 125% over average. >> we've got places that rent for $150 a night the on home away that you can stay in and you can book today. we've got places that rent for $10,000 a night for that weekend. >> home away is the world's largest marketplace for renting homes. >> you think about the combination of the 50th super bowl, in the bay area, at a brand new stadium. beyoncé and cold play with the music. i don't think the stars would align for a more epic event than that. >> that's translating into epic demand for home rentals. >> this is our formal living room. >> especially in the south bay. >> i don't have to rent it out, but it's well worth it for someone if they are going to really do it right and do the super bowl right. this is the place to stay. >> she's hoping to rent her four bedroom home near levi's stadium for $20,000 a night with a four-night minimum. she's already getting calls. and if she does rent the house, she knows what she'll do with

the money. >> our daughter is getting married in may. to a wonderful young man, and we would love to help rent the house to help pay for the wedding. >> she said she'll also donate some to charity and spend some on a super bowl week get away in hawaii. abc7 news. >> well, the sun last week, it looked like super bowl sunday might have rain, but now it's looking more dry? >> that's right. we have a couple chances of rain for the week ahead. also we have rain right now in parts of the bay area, around livermore, mountain view, san jose as this system continues to push to the south. we are on the northern end of this system. so you can see where it begins, right here. the beingtist is really from monterey on south. so as an area of low pressure and cold air pushes it to the south throughout the day today, we have some cumulus clouds. we will get the wind, a slight chance of a shower, a thunderstorm this the higher visions. this will stay with us for the next couple hours. a little light rain around

hayward. probably not likely where the darker green is around 680, livermore. and by around san jose looking at some rain, as well as evergreen. higher elevation snow. and right here from, say, 1301, salinas, and heavier rain from santa cruz to monterey. as we put the in motion you will notice that it will continue to fill on in and we are going to get some issues here with the fire problems of the past couple years. and perhaps some flooding from big sur on south. a winter weather advisory. they will get a couple feet of snow around yosemite. for the sierra nevada this will be winding down by about the next couple of hours. then we get a little burst into tomorrow. about a half frat tahoe city and donner 7 inches. with the northern california on the edge. look for some rain this morning. morgan hill, san jose. mid-and upper 40s half moon bay. perhaps 48 degrees. but the wind will be gusting at the coast today. and from our roof camera you can see the cooler numbers to the

north. nothing really going on from santa rosa, napa and novato this morning. a little rain in livermore. concord, you are on the edge. from the sutro tower camera, showers south of the golden gate. a chance after thunderstorm. higher elevations and then the rain moves out by about 9:00 in the south bay. the wind advisory from 4:00 this afternoon all along the coast until 4:00 tomorrow morning. this is how windy it's going to get. it's breezy at the coast, but look what happens by 2:00. 40 miles per hour winds half moon bay, 25 miles per hour winds oakland and san jose. even gustier in san jose by the evening hours. it doesn't let up. so if you are in the city you will notice how breezy it is. bring the jacket. after 8:00 this is out of here. then the northwesterly winds push through. we have sunshine, perhaps a few higher-elevation cumulus clouds. east bay hills, the north bay. but the week ahead, tuesday could see a shower, as well as thursday. and then it looks like we are looking dry for the big weekend next weekend. so as we push this in motion

from tomorrow night into tuesday, that is the next chance of rain. it's a quick mover but we have the clouds and might get our heads wet for your tuesday. today downtown look for the numbers in the 50s with sunshine. the winds kicking up. it should be a nice day. and the rest of the bay looking bat 54 livermore, 55 vallejo. the accuweather seven day forecast look at a little bit of rain tuesday, maybe again on friday, and then it looks dry and warmer right on through next weekend. >> okay. and groundhog day comes around. very scientific thing there. >> yeah, although i hear he has a 60, 70% accuracy record. go figure. remodeled place to host his super bowl party. in sunnyvale 60 volunteers, including some of the san francisco 49ers worked on a place ronny richardson has called home for 57 years. the group "rebuilding together peninsula" provides free repairs for low income homeowners. richardson's wife passed away and he's struggled to maintain his home on his own. >> it's a great bunch of people that come here and they do volunteer work, yes. and i'm pleased with it. i wish the whole world wags filled up with people like that. >> the house should be ready for him to move back in next friday, just in time to host a super bowl party >> ledge dodgers vince scully has announced he plans his final game on tv here in san francisco. the dodgers will close the regular season against the giants on october 2nd. the 88-year-old is in his 67th season with the team.

he does not plan to travel outside california to call games this year. a lack of dungeonnous crab did not stop organizers from throwing a crab festival and celebrating the crab in half moon bay. it was the seafood festival yesterday. organizers changed the name from the half moon bay crab festival in november after state officials suspended crab fishing because of toxic algae blooms. >> it hasn't been a good season. i think for the rest of the community this is a really good event. it shows we care about the ocean and everything that's going on with it right now. >> so instead of crab, there was wine. local beer, food demonstrations on sustainable seafood, local artists and a lot for kids to do. ing. >> much more ahead on the abc7 sunday morning news. the big winners at the sag the

>> welcome back. we are starting this half-hour with a look at our weather with meteorologist lisa argen. >> good morning. >> you are waking up to some rain in some areas but this area of cold air will push the system into southern california throughout the day today. a little rain around loss at toes and sunnyvale and further south. also in livermore you see the it's darker shade of green around 680, perhaps into milpitas. that's the light rain. the mier-elevation snow around mt. hamilton. as we go to the central coast it's heavier around monterey and then it will continue to push out of the south bay and through the central coast. so throughout the day today we are look be at more sunshine, breezy winds, the morning showers. a wind advisory. we will tell you how fast the

45% of caucus goers have yet to make up their minds ab. c7 news news. back to you, carolyn. >> politics will be the theme of this week. george stephanopoulos is anchoring from iowa and he welcomes donald trump, hillary clinton and bernie sanders. the candidates will have a final chance to explain why they deserve the voters' trust. you can see this week with george this morning at 8:00 right here on abc7. and a public show of support, president obama will visit a mosque in baltimore this week. the president plans to hold talks on wednesday with muslim leaders at the islamic society of baltimore. according to the white house, president obama will reiterate the importance of staying true to the nation's core values. he said including speaking out against bigotry and protecting religious freedom. a reminder you have until midnight tonight to enroll in covered california.

officials have extended the deadline today because of a surge of applications on friday. but consumers must begin the process online by tonight or make an appointment with a certified covered california representative. they will then have until february 6th to complete that process. >> it turns out diversity is alive and well in hollywood. last night's screen actor guild awards showcased a diversity that the oscars have failed to match. we are in los angeles with the story. >> the drama about a major coverup by the catholic church is in the thick of the oscar bags in the sag awards. brie larson took home the award. for the best female actress.

so showers south of the golden gate, turning breezy for everyone this afternoon, and a chance of a thunderstorm potentially. higher elevations of the east bay, more likely further south. maybe napa. you may see some cumulus developments and the clouds of vertical assent throughout the day. but we will be looking at the breezy winds here out of the northwest right on through the afternoon and evening hours. how windy? well, by about 2:00 we will see winds anywhere from 30 and 40 miles per hour, perhaps upwards of that throughout the around. here it is 5:00, 50 miles per hour wind gusts, point reyes, 32 miles per hour winds through livermore and the winds keep going all night long. may have a power outage here or there but here comes the win wind. we will see sunshine. we will need it. it will feel cool out there. and the chances of rain tuesday very light rain, thursday maybe another chance. but not enough to designate it as a storm or number. it's super bowl city today, 54 at 2:00.
