here is the knife he allegedly used. the officer was stabbed in the neck. >> the officer is a seven-year veteran. his injuries right now, it was a life-threatening injury. at this time, he is stable. >> reporter: the attack happened around 9:30 this morning. two chp officers cruising by the onramp to east bound 80, saw a man walking on the roadway toward the bay bridge. they got out of their car and stopped him. this is chp captain christopher sherry. >> during that enforcement contact, the subject attacked one of the officers and they began to struggle. >> reporter: the struggle ended when the man, whom officers say appears to be homeless, stabbed one of the officers. he then ran off. the officer's partner rendered first aid until an ambulance transferred him to san francisco general. officers shut down several blocks of the street.

he was able later found on 4th and brannon. the man was captured as he ran inside a bank. police believe he may have been staying in a homeless encamp lent. they found the knife on the pavement. vic lee, "abc7 news." this incident casts a new spotlight on the homeless and how the city has been handling the issue ahead of super bowl 50. officials continue to say they're not trying to hide the homeless, but new video shoes early morning sweeps by police and public works crews that appear aimed at keeping the hopeless out of public view. we'll have more tonight at 11:00 on this story. and with the super bowl just five days away now, today we are seeing for the first time heavy duty military type weapons and security on bay area transit systems and hubs. >> leanne melendez is life at sfo with a show of force we don't see often around here.

>> reporter: we're definitely not in kansas anymore. this is the world we live in. we learned that shortly after 9/11 and we're seeing it here in san francisco this week. this is the view during super bowl week. local bay area law enforcement is getting help from officers from homeland security and the transportation security administration stationed where the public goes. >> the airports and ferries here and down by the stadium. >> reporter: tens of thousands of people are expected to go through here sunday. >> any time you have an increased visual presence, it acts as a reassurance and deterrent. >> reporter: k-9 teams are also here to inspect b.a.r.t. trains and as passengers walk towards the airport terminals, they are

scanned by this black box. >> there's a sensor in there and it senses gamma rays. >> i welcome the security. anything to make us more safe. >> reporter: viper teams are on board ferries making some passengers a little uncomfortable. today they were inspecting the area around the ferry building. muni has added security as the number of passengers increases. >> over the weekend, we doubled our ridership in the subway. so people are taking the advice to use public transit to get around. >> reporter: viper operatives were created following the 9/11 commission hearings. in san francisco, leanne melendez, "abc7 news." the show will go on for snoop dog's super bowl show tonight, even though the equipment he needs to perform has been stolen. according to tmz, snoop dog parked his suv in san francisco last night. someone broke in, took his luggage and concert gear. he's performing at the region si hotel tonight as well as other

events this week. the chp is investigating yesterday's crash involving three buses, carrying the denver broncos' team. the agency says the driver's lane change may be responsible but it's not searching for the toyota. one chp motorcycle was injured. no broncos' team members were hurt. >> obviously it scared some gays. any time you go through something like that, there were some guys a little -- went through a tough situation, but we feel fortunate that we felt like everybody is fine. >> the officer who was treated for minor cuts at the hospital but is now out. the broncos take on the carolina panthers in super bowl 50 on sunday. download our "abc7 news" app for everything you need to know about super bowl 50.

other news now, oakland firefighters have found the body of a woman inside a home that was destroyed by fire last night. fire crews struggled to extinguish the blaze after it broke out around 11:00. the home recently underwent a remember nation. the new additions made the firefighters difficult. the house is located near the oakland zoo and interstate 580. one neighbor said it spread quickly. >> then it started getting high and spreading. the fire department came pretty quick. >> one firefighter tell off a ladder while fighting the blaze. he will be okay. the coroner will need to use dental records to identify the victim. san jose city crews have arrived at a park where a man died after being crushed by a falling tree. it happened yesterday. melody woodrow has been following this story and is live

with what she's managed to find out. >> reporter: late this afternoon, a handful of individuals from the city arrived here. right now you're looking at an individual in a white suit working to clean the area where this tree had fallen. you see the yellow caution tape? that's been here since last night, but the orange tape was just added moments ago. the city says they have extended the perimeter here out of an abundance of caution. >> unfortunately, somebody lost their life yesterday because this tree fell over. >> reporter: he says he recalls something from the city or water district studying the area three years ago. >> i asked him about this tree that fell, and they said that's one of the healthiest trees here in the creek. >> reporter: late this afternoon, an arborist arrived to examine the area.

>> look for structural defects. we're assessing these trees still standing to see if there's additional risk. >> reporter: he will also investigate why this tree may have fallen. >> i am not aware of any inspection. my understanding is that parks does do an annual visual assessment. >> i pulled a chunk off the bottom of this and it fell apart like confetti. >> reporter: the victim may have been riding his bicycle in the area. >> same guy i've seen out here for years picking lemon grass. >> reporter: he says he worries about people walking through the park before someone else gets hurt or worse. in san jose, melanie woodrow, "abc7 news." a woman wanted for stealing two cars, including a police cruiser, was arrested. she was one of two 179s wanted

for ramming a stolen suv into a patrol car. after stealing the police car, and dragging a police officer behind it, she got away. the officer is okay and should be back to work. police are still looking for the alleged accomplice. a dog stolen from a shelter in oakland has been returned safe. the man who stole this pit bull mix over the weekend dropped the dog off at a dog sanctuary. he apologized. we're told daisy may is doing well now. a lot more to come from our vantage point here super bowl city in san francisco. mandatory water conservation, bay area cities forced to plug the leak. so is it now time to loosen the tap? that story is next.

winter is off to a good start with today's snow pack measurement. but it's not enough. today, officials found 76 inches of snow near eco summit. the water content is 130% of normal. but the snow pack needs to be 150% of normal to signal the drought is easing. californians have met the

governor's 25% reduction in water use. so now what? today, a state board is deciding whether to extend that mandate through october or change it. laura anthony is live in brentwood. that community has done its part. >> reporter: it was one of those communities last summer asked to conserve a lot. the community here has gone above and beyond. some water suppliers are pleading with the state water board to ease those drought mandates. others say it's just too soon. despite recent rain and snow, no one is proclaiming an end to the drought. but there are bah water districts that would like to see the state roll back its conservation mandates, at least a little. >> brentwood got put in a 32%

mandatory reduction. >> reporter: residents have met the goal and exceeded it, with accumulative reduction of 40%. now officials are looking to the state to see if their mandate might get reduced. >> there is some adjustments made on climate, on growth. so that's some opportunity where our 32% mandate might drop. >> our customers have saved 37%. >> reporter: customers in contra costa also exceeded the 28% mandate placed on them. even if the state lowers it, the district won't change its drought program, at least not yet. >> it has rained and snowed a lot, which is great. but it's still only february. >> reporter: overall, since june, californians exceeded the governor's 25% mandate. but water conservation dropped to just 18% in december. laura anthony, "abc7 news." a big shakeup at yahoo as

the ceo tries to save her own job. the company announced it will lay off about 1700 employees. she will cut services she says are not worth the time and money. the goal is to lower annual operating costs by $400 million. the company reported a loss of more than $4 billion during the 2015 fiscal year. uber unveiled a new look across 65 countries today. the san francisco company got rid of the black and white u and replaced it a circle look. in the u.s., it's a dark teal. what you see on the right there. uber's ceo and founder was personally involved in designing this new look. we'll see how people adapt to it. tax day is still more than two months away, but it's not too early to get yours done. >> michael finney has important information on a tax credit that

many people don't know about but should know about. >> reporter: this is an important one. for many americans traveling to make ends make, tax time can be stressful. consumer reports has some important advice about a tax credit that goes unclaimed but could help those who need it most. a financial counselor helped e von file her taxes. she got thousands back last year and says that made a big difference. >> it helped a lot. i work hard but i don't make that much. so it was a big deal. >> reporter: consumer reports says millions qualify for the earned income tax credit on their tax return. >> if you're a lower or moderate income worker, this can give you back some or all of the money you've paid in taxes. you might even get more. this can impact your tax refund. >> reporter: the amount of

credit you can collect fends on the income, marital status and how many children you have. a married couple with three children making $50,000 a year can get over $6,000 back. but too few people know about this tax credit. >> one in five households in the united states that is eligible for the earned income tax credit does not claim it. >> reporter: and for those tax filers, here is this advice. >> it is the money available for them and they should claim it. >> reporter: you can find out if you qualify for the federal earned income tax credit with other available credits and deductions on the irs website. so file, you'll need a social security number for you and your children. you can get help filing the

credit -- or filing for the credit from any tax prep website or service. >> michael, thanks. we got some health news. a warning for women trying to get pregnant but still drink alcohol. the cdc says alcohol consumption could permanently harm a baby. just an incredible story tonight. authorities are looking for a passenger who may have been sucked out of a passenger jet in somalia after an explosion. passengers say they heard a bang and saw a fire before this plane made an emergency landing after takeoff in somalia. voice of america showed this picture of the plane with a big hole in the fuselage, close to the right wing. on board video taken by one of the 74 passengers shows what looked like from inside the

towards santa rosa. 1:00 p.m., a little bit reaches san francisco, but most is still focussed in the north bay and a few showers beginning to develop around 3:00 p.m. and other parts of the bay area. 5:00 p.m., everyone is getting wet weather here. 6:00, it's still a wet evening commute. at 9:00 p.m., showers are still going and will taper towards 11:00. and then we'll see a few more redevelop overnight heading into your thursday morning commute. so wet spots thursday at 5:00 a.m. and it all kinds down by 7:00 a.m. 10:00 is long gone. here's a look, most areas will pick up between a few hundred ds to a quarter of an inch. if you're going early to super bowl city in the day, you're fine. low 50s, chance of rain enters

at 2:00 p.m. and showers for the evening hours. so just be prepared for some wet weather. temperatures first thing in the morning in the mid 30s to 40s. most areas around the bay and the coast will be in the 40s. the clouds thicken up, the showers move in. a cool day in most areas. 46 in lake port. as you take a look at the forecast, we're going to change it up. san jose, 59 tomorrow. numbers will start to come up in the low to mid 70s this weekend and into next week. levi stadium for super bowl stadium, as the broncos and the panthers take on each other, 72 degrees at kickoff, dropping to 59. so a warm one for super bowl sunday. one on the storm impact scale for some. comes in during the afternoon, showers lingering into thursday. then dry and milder as we hit the weekend.

the carolina panthers are at san jose state university and the denver broncos are practicing at stanford stadium. >> a lot of fun. the media, however, has set up shop here in san francisco, including espn. and they were live at pier 39. >> larry beil tweeted out this photo of the massive crowds watching a live edition of "sportscenter" with steve young. >> let's go to larry now live at pier 39, who had to fight through the crowds to meet up with this hall of famer. people love to see him. >> reporter: this is all that's left of the tent and the equipment and the personnel that is required to put on a live one-hour broadcast. the espn crew is moving on down, they'll be at marina green tomorrow. the second steve came off the set, he was swarmed by fans who wanted autographs and to take a selfie with him. i talked with steve about his role with the host committee here for super bowl 50, as well

as his relationship with broncos' head coach gary kubiak. do you feel like you're a bay area ambassador or has trent dilfer got that job? >> i'm the host committee. i put the work in with the mayor and keith bruce. come on, i've been through the wars now. this is a big deal for me now. dilfer is hiding down in saratoga. what has he done? >> reporter: he's done nothing. tell me about the great sense of pride you have to see so many people here. >> it feels like football weather. it's the place to have super bowls. i love the idea that people get out to san francisco and it's the focus for this year. >> reporter: not sure people know about the relationship between you and gary kubiak, he was you be quarterback coach in 1994. you described him as being quietly vicious.
