pockets of heavier rain are showing up south of santa rosa, west of petaluma. this is a band of light to moderate rain. in addition to the approaching rain, we have a high surf advisory in effect from 7:00 this evening to 7:00 friday morning. the expectation is large breakers and rip currents and beach erosion are possible. our storm impact scale helps us to show you the expected intensity of each approaching storm. one is light, five is severe. the approaching storm ranks one. it's expected to be mainly light rain. starting 5:00 this afternoon, the rain continues sweeping southward and eastward until it reaches all parts of the bay area. overnight, it will continue as pockets of light showers and light rain. i'll give you a closer look at that in just a moment. >> thank you very much. we do have new details now

that remerging about go students who have come down with meningitis. >> david louie was the first to identify the resident's hall where those students live. >> reporter: the ten-story, 350 student capacity squig hall is where one of the two students lived. due to privacy, students say they're not sure if they were exposed. >> i know it is in squig, but i don't know what floors, i don't know the other activities that the students were anticipating in. >> reporter: county and university health officials confirmed both students have been hospitalized. >> we don't know whether there will be additional cases or not, but our job is to ensure they get rapid treatment if needed. >> reporter: dr. cody says meningitis cases often break out in clusters from teammates and with close contact from others.

symptoms include high fever, rash, sensitivity to bright lights and confusion. new details about the capture of two dangerous fugitives in san francisco this weekend. a homeless man is being credited with helping capture the orange county escapees. vic lee has more. >> reporter: this is an interview you will hear only on "abc7 news." our cameras caught up with a man today as he left a mcdonald's in the haight-ashbury, the same mcdonald's he went to saturday when he spotted one of the fugitives. >> i told myself, that's the dude. >> reporter: well, matthew chapman had just spotted one of the two men who escaped from jail just days earlier. chapman had just seen their picture on the news and flagged down an officer. but as the officers were responding, they had to respond to a medical emergency. he then pointed him out to

police as the fugitive fled into golden gate park. >> he sees me, he's across the street and i'm going -- because i seen him. boom. that's the guy. >> reporter: police chased after him and caught him. chapman then pointed police to the parked van where the other fugitive was hiding. chapman says he knew someone was sleeping in the van because of the condensation on the wind shield. you'll hear much more from him, including what he says he'll do with the share of the $140,000 reward, if he gets it, coming up later on "abc7 news" at 6:00. vic lee, "abc7 news." >> thank you, vic. major progress is being knemade in a san francisco neighborhood. crews have been pumping water where a $2 million home was demolished. "abc7 news" has a look at the

work being done to figure out what happened. >> reporter: it's been nearly a week since this dream home was demolished. today, the owner is confident what caused the sliding hillside. >> the water main. >> reporter: he's just waiting for the confirmation. crews will insert casings that will act as a well to allow them to pump water out and determine how much water is underground and at what level the water came in. >> that water found its way directly onto my property and the adjacent property and the property down hill. >> reporter: he estimates the water main leaked millions of gallons of water. he says the hilside has been rapidly drying since they shut the water off. >> we lost my home. hopefully we can save the other homes around us. >> reporter: neighbors who had been watching this unfold from day one are still puzzled. >> of course it's a surprise. you don't expect this.

young man, but we're focused on what we have to do football wise. we're going to work this morning with our meetings, getting into our routine. so we moved on. >> reporter: members of the human trafficking task force followed one woman at a motel 6 to a car waiting outside where murphy and his brother were sitting. they were detained and questioned and they released murphy. but they cited his brother for trafficking. murphy played his college football at oregon state and yet to play a snap in the nfl. authorities cited ten men in several prostitution stings during the past week. now to the lighter side and why we're here today with the espn backdrop. you do not get anymore iconic san francisco views than what we have right here. that's why espn has set up here today. they've built two very large sets that will be their headquarters for super bowl coverage for the next few days and viewers around the country

seven years into president obama's presidency, he marked a first today. he visited a mosque here in the u.s. >> kristen sze is here to explain the timing of this. >> reporter: president obama does not have another election and this is his final year in office, so he's stepping into a touchy issue. the president spoke today in a baltimore mosque. he has visited mosques before in other parts of the world but never here. analysts say this gesture is difficult, because a cnn poll in september found 29% of americans believe he is muslim. now, consider that number jumps to 43% to 45% for republicans.

average for a gallon of regular gas is now $1.78. drivers in some states like missouri and oklahoma are paying less than $1.50. in california, gas prices average $2.56 a gallon. in oakland, drivers pay $2.45. same in san jose. in san francisco, the average price is $2.59. new controversy over a lottery ticket worth $63 million. it was purchased at a 7-eleven in chatsworth. the winner has until 5:00 p.m. tomorrow to turn it in. a man claiming he has the ticket has filed a lawsuit claiming he tried to turn in the winning ticket but it was rejected by officials who say it was too damaged. going to be a fight. >> yeah. >> we'll see what happens. but when there's a lot of money on the line, people tend to fight about it. >> our super bowl activities are on the line with the weather coming our way. >> everybody is outside, gearing

up for our good morning again today. how does it look? >> which one of us? >> either one. >> $63 million puts you in this neighborhood. >> it's a nice neighborhood to be in. >> the rain's coming in. we're going to look at alcatraz out here. let's get it to an expert in spencer christian and when the rain will really arrive. >> rain has arrived already in parts of the north bay, likely to move into other regions in the next few hours. it is getting cloudier and cloudier across the area and is wet in some spots over the north bay. some little areas of moderate to heavy rain appear to have developed south of santa rosa. there was heavy activity way up north around eureka. that has tapered off as the moisture that produced that activity there is moving down to our direction.

current temperature readings 52 here in san francisco, 56 across the bay. in 57 in san jose. here's how the sky looks from our emeryville camera. we'll see light rain this evening tonight. a few wet spots tomorrow morning, which could slow down the morning commute and sunny and much warmer this weekend. the approaching storm is light. we have high surf right now. here's the forecast animation, resuming at 11:00 tonight. 5:00 tomorrow morning, as the commute gets under way, some wet spots, although it may not be raining across the bay area. but from the overnight rain, look out for some possibly wet and slippery spots for the morning commute. and it will taper off by afternoon. isolated showers may remain in the afternoon, over the higher

terrain. by 4:00 tomorrow afternoon, rainfall totals will reach up to about a quarter of an inch in most locations. we don't expect it to be wet in super bowl city. so a dry day tomorrow. and sunday, the actual super bowl, levi stadium, kickoff time 3:30. sunny and 72 degrees for the super bowl. overnight, scattered showers, low temperatures in the mid to upper 40s. tomorrow after morning showers taper off, partly sunny in the afternoon, highs in the upper 50s to low 60s. look at the warmup coming our way next week. we may have record high temperatures in some locations by tuesday and wednesday of next week as temperatures move up

we've heard from different law enforcement agencies at different levels explain how they'll do their part and how they're out in force to make sure super bowl 50 is safe. today, we heard from them as a group, explaining how team work would get the job done. >> we're on it. >> reporter: that's what security officials at all levels took pains to say today at a news conference. the headliner, secretary homeland security jeh johnson. >> at this time, we know of no specific credible threat directed at super bowl 50 or related events. >> reporter: but they're training hard in case one comes along. the fbi says up to 90 canine units will be on duty. dozens of bomb squad technicians will be at the heady, and so will several s.w.a.t. teams ready to respond. there are radiation detectors also posted that's just what you'll see. >> there's so much going on

lauren lister has his story. >> reporter: the three inmates who escaped from a maximum security california jail last month are all back behind bars, but today, a cab driver who they allegedly kidnapped while on the run is still reflecting on his ordeal and thanking one of those inmates. >> he saved my life, and i owe him. >> reporter: the driver says one of the fugitives helped him escape after being held for a week. that that's -- >> he said, we have to go right now. >> reporter: the inmate then turned himself in. the other two were caught

saturday in this san francisco whole foods parking lot after a man spotted the white van the fugitives had reportedly stolen and flagged down police. the cab driver said he feared for his life that he was kidnapped at gunpoint and officials say once the group got to san jose, wong had fought about whether the cab driver should be killed. coming up on "abc7 news" at 6:00, hear from the man who found the van and called police, ending the man hunt. what he told "abc7 news." the sexual assault charges will not be dropped against bill cosby. late today, a judge ruled his criminal case will move forward, pushing aside the claim he had an immunity deal. he's charged with drugging and violating a former temple university employee in 2004. a district attorney testified he gave an unwritten promise to cosby saying he would never face criminal charges in a decades old case. defense lawyers used that deal

makes it to the top of their sport at the professional level had great family support. and tj ward falls into that category. juanita and terrell ward were high school sweet hearts in san francisco and raised three kids here in the bay area. they wanted tj to get a good education, so they sent him to high school in concord. >> him being my first born and not having an older brother, i wanted him to get the brotherhood experience from day la salle. >> i feel the same way about this team. >> reporter: his dad coached the team there after his three-year career in the nfl with the eagles. terrell senior played in super bowl xv, now his son is in super bowl 50. >> it's like a full circle, to have your son reach this opportunity, you know, which is tremendous. >> we all know most boys get

their athletic ability from their mother. >> right. >> reporter: dad worked with both his boys, teaching them to play the game the right way. >> at some point, they go dad, i got it, i've heard it a thousand times. >> reporter: while their mother car pooled them everywhere in three different sports. >> my parents were everything to getting here. if not for them, i wouldn't be here. my work ethic, my determination, intense. >> reporter: tj spent his first four years with the cleveland browns. for him to achieve the super bowl -- >> words cannot describe how excited i am for him. when your child accomplishes his bowl and then do it at the highest peak that is possible, it's just indescribable. >> reporter: the family will be at sunday's game and hope tj comes away healthy and with a victory. >> this role for tj hasn't been

easy. but my husband would always say, it's not where you start but where you finish. and look where he's finishing, at the super bowl. >> reporter: one of the best nfl family stories i've ever been associated with. i started talking to his dad and i said where did you go to school? he said san diego state. it turned out we played against each other in 1975, florida state and san diego state. i remember the game. i said to him, i caught seven passes on you. he says, you did. he does, but we beat you and that's all that counts in the end. what a small world, a great family and we're all pulling for tj in the super bowl. mike shumann, back to you, larry. >> you still remember how many catches you had in a game a hundred years ago? i guess he does. that's going to wrap it up from here at marina green.

their classroom to the san francisco bay. natasha shows us how it works. >> reporter: it's an exciting day for these kindergarteners. more than 40 of them are going on a trip. >> we've got a group of kinder gardners from a san francisco school who came here today free of charge, their bus is paid for, tickets are paid for, everything. >> reporter: they take students on a ride in their bright yellow bus. this takes them from the school to their destination, saving teachers and children a lot of steps. >> we would walk to the bus and take the bus to the b.a.r.t. and the b.a.r.t. to the muni train. it was very complicated with 20 kids. so having this bus makes the whole trip easier and safer. >> reporter: go places' goal is to make it easier to learn about nature and science.

advocates prepare to sound off. >> here's a look at the protest. advocates are upset they have to move out as the big game moves in. the super bowl is not super for some folks tonight. >> a number of critics, including homeless advocates, are turning out to protest how taxpayer money is being spent on this super bowl. >> reporter: when the whole world is watching, you seize the moment. there are a lot of protests planned. this one, as you said, with homeless advocates that you can see police officers separating them from super bowl city. city officials estimate of the 6700 homeless in san francisco, about 3500 live on the streets. many in ever-growing tent cities. and this homeless man says he feels the pressure of super bowl 50. >> yeah, there's a lot of pressure, because they don't
