francisco police. >> new insight into the last hours of mario woods' live. good evening, i'm dan ashley. >> i'm ama daetz. we're live on top of the abc broadcast center. >> we overlook the ferry building next to super bowl city. we'll begin with new information about the mario woods case. >> abc7 news reporter vic lee joins with us this interview. vic? >> reporter: the victim does not want his identify revealed so for the sake of the story, we'll call him jacob. he's 26 years old, the same age as mario woods. jacob's story fills in the gaps of what happened, and it also confirms to some doubters that there was a stabbing. >> did you know mario woods? >> no. never met him before. >> reporter: jacob says he was sitting in a car, chilling with female friends and one of their

children. the stranger outside seemed like he was on drugs. >> he looked agitated and paranoid. mario started walking back and forth and yelling stuff to us. he tried to open our car door. i knew he had a knife on him. >> reporter: here is the knife. jacob was treated at san francisco general hospital. police officers went to the scene. a witness pointed woods out. >> i didn't know he had been shot to death. >> he's afraid people may want to harm him because it led to wood's death. >> my heart may never be the same again. i have nerve damage. >> reporter: jacob says he is the forgotten victim, the victim

protestors have forgotten. >> i acknowledge they're trying to get justice and everything, but you have to realize that there are victims of you know, black on black crimes. >> reporter: referring to the day of remembrance. >> i was a victim in this situation. and i haven't had any calls, i haven't heard anything from no supervis supervisors. >> reporter: jacob feels bad for woods family. he has children. >> i want to say to miss woods, my heart goes out to you. >> reporter: jacob says he would like to meet woods' mother when the time is right. he did not want to comment on the shooting because he was not there. all he wants to do is keep a low profile and get his life back together again. vic lee, abc7 news.

a judge set bail at $5 million for a homeless man. is he charged with attempted murder, making his first court appearance today, the officer was responding to a report of someone walking in the road tuesday morning when police say he attacked him. the officer's condition is improving. >> we understand that he is in good spirits, eating soft foods now, and he's able to eat what he can. and he's ready to get out of there. he's not the kind of guy that is going to sit around. he wants to get going. >> officers showed up in uniform in court today to make a statement. we have breaking news back east in new york city. a huge police presence here in the bronx. two police officers have been shot outside of a public housing development. happened about an hour ago. one of the officers was shot in

the head. the other, in the leg. dozens of police cars have responded and police are searching for one suspect, mother has been arrested. >>. we have powerful new video showing how burglars tried and failed to steal a liquor store's atm. two people backed the truck through the front of the pick and pack store and gillman street just after 4:00 this morning. look at the impact on store security cameras. they tried to break open or take the atm, failed but escaped before police arrived. the owners lost most of their alcohol inventory. >> police say this man exposed himself to under age teen-aged girls a number of times in san jose. they arrested him for 14 separate incidents near foothill, overfelt and independence high schools. police say he would wait for girls walking alone to school.

covered california, the state version of the president's health care law exceeded it's enrollment goals in 2016. the agency reports 425,000 new customers signed up in the open enrollment period. of those, nearly 100,000 signed up in the final four days of enrollment, which began in november. the goal was 295,000 sign ups. well, as we overlook ferry building and super bowl city, we're more than halfway through super bowl week, kind of flying by. >> that is why we're here, we want to show you excitement and everything going on here as we focus on the super bowl. >> fun stuff. now, for a look on the visa everywhere cam, tonight the band perry will perform on the city stage. the concert kicks off at 7:30. abc7 news was in san francisco as the famous budweiser

clydesdaels lined the route. >> bart has to rewrite it's top ten busiest days. 471,000 people packed the trains making it the sixth busiest ridership day on record. as part of the lead up, the national football league is showing off technologies it's funding to help prevent concussions among players. >> reporter: the show is timely. a week after the nfl released numbers showing an almost 60% increase in reported concussions they brought in medical experts to talk about it. >> i believe that the nfl has an unmatched opportunity and platform to effect change particularly as it relates to player health. >> the company is funded by

something called nfl hand held initiative, to try to protect players from head injuries, like this helmet using a special structure. >> when you hit it with force, it actually comes in a bit. sort of like a car bumper. it absorbs the force. >> reporter: this helmet tries to absorb brain waves. >> we look at patterns and use algorithms to decipher the patterns. >> reporter: players are filing a suit saying they weren't told about the dangers. and a big-screen movie that could lead to a condition called cte. >> retired players worry about what may happen to them. >> you're worried, as a linebacker, you're crazy if you don't realize that.

>> reporter: if these prove something scientists have to contend with, players are still growing stronger each year. >> many owners of restaurants around super bowl city say their business has been cut in half, they say with the closed streets, locals are finding it impossible to make it to their favorite places to eat. the super bowl committee says the fans would be good for the restaurants. >> it's different kind of crowd. you know? you want to put on a football jersey and eat a hot dog. >> this is not only affects the boulevard, but the people who work here, people are used to making money from tips. >> the restaurant owners say it will take months to recover the money lost over the couple

there, a major piece of the bay bridge is being lowered into the bay. the first of five massive trusses is being removed. this shows how it will go. the first step will be to reenforce and strengthen the truss. then, it's lowered to a barge more than 500 feet below. each weighs more than 25 tons. >> this is a environmental part of history. our priority is safety, the environment, and just the appreciation for what we're doing. >> it will be sent to pier 7 and taken apart. >> you're about to meet the second most popular denver bronco after john elway. this one has four hooves, a mane and a name in common with david louie. louie in chinese means

city, sunny skies with high temperatures in the low 60s by in the evening, more clouds and it will be cool. temperatures in the low 50s at that point. nationwide, look for a warm pattern over most of the western two thirds of the country. the jet stream brings cool to cold air into the eastern third of the nation for the next 6 to 10 days. back to the week ahead, san jose will see highs in the mid-70s by monday and tuesday. there is a possibility of record highs for those dates in the south bay next week and here in the city of san francisco, which is cooler than the south bay, we'll see temperatures around 70 degrees on monday and tuesday. getting back to overnight conditions, mainly clear skies, low temperatures in the low to mid-40s. however, some inland valleys like around santa rosa and napa, and morgan hill, down south, lows into upper 30s overnight.

everything connected with the super bowl is sponsored by a corporation, big companies paying big bucks to part of the action. but thousands of people working to make sure super bowl events run smoothly are not getting paid so we wondered is that legal? when you get to super bowl city in san francisco, it's hard to miss volunteers. they're everywhere, wearing orange jackets, giving directions, snapping photos, helping visitor was crazy games. it's hard to miss the corporate sponsors. admission is free with lots of logos to remind fans who is paying. despite the money, more than 5,000 people signed up to work for free. >> when i have heard the super bowl is going to be hosted i looked at what opportunities existed. i just wanted to be part of it. >> volunteers commit to 34 hour shifts and get backpacks and

uniforms, some actually started working months ago. >> i started as a screener so i started screening the first batch of volunteers. a lot of them are now working with us. >> marianne put in 200 hours. >> it's a great statement to the fact that volunteerism isn't said. >> if they're not having a great time, this employment lawyer says these events walk a legal tight rope because of california's labor laws. >> there is a question whether it's a civic activity or its a corporate activity. if it's for commercial benefit, sponsors are running the risk of running afoul of employment protection and volunteers should be getting paid. >> the army of volunteers is organized by the super bowl 50 host committee. officials tell us they're very careful to stay within the labor laws. >> we're not a money making machine. we're a nonprofit.

we draw a clear boundary. >> sagathi takes issue with requiring volunteers agreeing to final and binding arbitration. >> they're volunteering time, and to have to give up their rights if something bad happens to them, that seems particularly unfair. >> the host committee did not respond to answers about the waiver. abc7 news learned another pool will be paid. the nfl recruited 500 volunteers to work on the hyped half time show and rehearsals have begun, well underway, but after we started asking questions about california law, the nfl told us it's decided to pay the field crew. no word on how much or whether it will cover both rehearsals and game day. >> with the attention there is a dark side to the event.
